Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, we're going to install Part #39510 from Tekonsha. This is a Voyager brake controller. The first step is actually put a connector on the back of the truck. The part we're going to use to do that will be 37185. The brake controller and adapter cable also come in the package, Part #39510-3025-p. Now, we'll start off by installing the bracket onto the bumper.

Then go ahead and attach the seven pull connector to the bracket. Okay, with the seven pull connector installed, we can go ahead and start hooking up our wires. We'll take the four pull end and connect it to existing four pulls on the vehicle. We'll hook in the four pull wire connectors together, we'll apply some and I'll let you grease and then use a zip tight to hold everything together and wrap it up with some electrical tape, that way it will make permanent connection out of it. Then we'll take the black and blue wires or we're going to connect them up to a cable that we're going to run up to the junction box underneath the hood.

The part # for the cable would be 10-2-1. We hook up our gray cable to the black and the blue wires can melt the seven pull connector, we're going to match it black to black and then white to blue. Then we'll go ahead and take the purple wire and hook up to reverse size circuit that's on the vehicle and that would be the light green wire which is located inside the harness behind the four pull wire. We'll take a right wire with a ring terminal and ground it to the frame. We'll tape everything together, keep everything nice and neat and then we'll continue on with the gray cable and run it up to the junction box underneath the hood.

Going to your gray cable, run it to the frame and make sure we don't hit anything that's hot like the exhaust or anything moving like these winching components. Next, we need to remove this bracket in the corner, we need to take off the cover for our junction box to get to wires underneath. Remove the bracket with this four bolts then we can unsnap the cover. We'll go ahead and take the bar hold up from the engine compartment and ran it up to the junction box. Underneath the cover, you can see that we have two wires, the blue wire and the red wire.

Now, the blue wire will go to the output from our brake controller, we'll take a white wire and connect that up to the blue wire. We'll cut an existing connector and use a bulk connector. Right next to it is a red wire that's use for power supply to the brake controller or an existing unused stud is right next to it. We'll use the 8mm nut with a 1.5 inch tread pitch to secure a cable to the post. Now, we'll take our remaining black wire in the cable, it will run up to the post on the other side of a junction box. Now, that will be use to install the black wire to the power supply will be a 6mm nut by 1.0 tread pitch. After you attached your black wire to that post, we need to install a fuse. Now we will be using 30 amperes in this slot right here. That will give us power to the wire and we'll be good to go. All we got to do is re-install the covers and the bracket and then we'll get our attention to the brake controller and install on the inside of the vehicle. Now, I'm going to go ahead and install the brake controller. First of all, you pop it from the junction boxes to the inside towards the left underneath the dash and there will be three sockets on the very top. You want to install our adapter cable for brake controller from the second one from the left. Now with Part #3025-p, we'll plug the adapt cord in and then re-install the cap. Now, we'll leave a wire loose and we'll go ahead and knot up the brake controller. First we'll attach the bracket to the dash and we'll make sure that's in a straight line with the vehicle. Before we install a brake controller on the bracket, we'll also take the time out to pre-drill the holes in inside the brake controller body that way we either start everything together once we install it to the bracket. Then we'll attach our brake controller to the bracket and we'll also connect our wires up at the same time. Okay, with our brake controllers installed, we'll go ahead and take a moment to zip tight our wires up. Once they're secured, we can go ahead and put our trailer to it and check the operation. Okay, looks like we have a green LED so that tells us that as we see our trailer back there and it's ready to work. Deploy it to manual override and just you all put and you can tell by the colors from there goes some green to yellow to orange to red. With that that will finish our install of Part # 39510 from Tekonsha, the Voyager brake controller on a 2000 Chevrolet pickup.

  • Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness for 1999 Chevy Suburban and 2002 Ford E-450 RV
  • The reason you cannot find a connector for the 1999 Suburban is because the 1999 Suburban did not have a tow package that included a brake controller port. If the RV builder bought the Econoline from Ford with a factory installed 7-Way or 4-Way, you would use Tekonsha Brake Control Harness part # 3035-P. The RV builder may have ordered the van without these or removed them when it converted the van to an RV. The port should be located either behind the panel, underneath and to the right of th

  • Tekonsha Trailer Brake Wire Harness, # 3025-P, Recommendation for 2000 Chevy Truck
  • The difference between the 3025-P and the 3015-P is the pin locations of the wires on the orange connector. The reason for this is because the orange connector on 3025-P is wired to work on most GM vehicles from 1999-2002, such as your 2000 Chevy Pickup. The 3015-P is wired to work on most GM vehicles from 2003-2006. The orange connector on both harnesses are the same, but the pin locations for the different wires are different. It sounds like you have 3015-P and the wires are not making the
