Today we're going to show you Dexter's 12" Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brake Assembly for right-hand side, part number 23-465. This is a 12" x 2" break assembly. We will measure the diameter across the shoes and there is a 12" figure. Then we'll measure the width of the shoes and there is our 2" mark. When paired up with the assembly for the left-hand side, these brakes are good for axles, weighted up to 7,000 pounds. The assembly uses the 5-bolt brake mounting pattern.

So check your trailers axle, to make sure it's got the proper 5-bolt pattern. Including with the brake assembly, a wire leads to run toward magnet. It doesn't matter which you use for ground and which you use for brake feed, so long as you have a good electrical connection. Since this is an electrical system, you don't want to use it on marine or boat trailer applications. This assembly is also self-adjusting, which means over time you won't have to adjust the breaks for a proper tension.

When you first install them, you do need to set the tension by rotating the star wheel, until you have an even light amount of drag as you rotate the drum around the assembly. Once you've done that, every time you back the trailer with the brakes on, tension will be applied to this cable, which will in turn flip an activator that will advance the star wheel if some tension needs to be added. We know that this assembly is for the right-hand side, because we want our shorter brake shoe to go on the front of the trailer, and the longer brake shoe to go on the trailing edge of the trailer. The way the brake assembly works is as the drum rotates around the assembly with the wheel, and you apply brakes inside, this magnet will be activated and it will stick inside the drum. As the drum drags with the magnet, it's going to pull this arm, which in turn will open the brake shoes applying brake pressure.
