demo-dexter-trailer-vrakes-23-398 Today were looking at the Dexter 7 inch hydraulic brake assembly part number 23-398. This assembly is for the left hand side. The reason we can tell its for the left hand side is because the front shoe will always be smaller than the rear shoe. This is a single servo setup which means it has a wheel cylinder with one piston that will push out against your forward shoe and create a wedging effect against the primary shoe inside the brake drum when applied. When you couple this left hand side with the right hand side, the pair will create up to 2500 pounds in braking capacity. To tell what shoe and hub drum assembly you have, you measure across the linings and see that its 7 inches.
To get the width or thickness, simply measure across the shoe lining to see its 1 and , so your hub drum assembly setup will have to be 7 inch by 1 and inches. For mounting, its a 4 bolt setup, its got 4 bolts already set through the backing plates to mount to the mounting flange of your axle. When initially setting up your hub drum assembly, youll need to use the star wheel adjuster to push the brake shoes out to the brake drum. Youll want a light drag for start up, then as the shoe linings wear down, youll need to make and adjustment with the star wheel which can be accessed through the backing plate access hole to take up any clearances necessary to keep a nice even braking surface. And there you have it for our 7 inch hydraulic brake assembly from Dexter part number 23-398..
