Video Transcript for This Old Trailer: Electric Trailer Brake Installation Part 1

Alright, today on This Old Trailer, what we are going to do is install electric brakes. Right now this trailer does not have any brakes on it whatsoever, so it has two drag axles. So the first thing that we need to do is go ahead and take off the rear wheels. And then we will go ahead and take off the hubs. At this point we will take off the dust cap on our axle. And basically what you want to do is on this particular unit we have an E-Z Lube cap, so it fits kind of tight. It is a good idea to go ahead and rotate the hub and lightly strike it and then I will just back it off with a screw driver behind the flange. And then pry it off. Alright, let us wipe off the excess grease on the end of the spindle here and we will get to our tang washer. And we will release it so we can back off the castle nut. Alright, we have it cleaned up a little bit. Now right here, this is the tab I was talking about. That is our tang washer. Take this. Push it down flat to the flat spot on our spindle and then you can take the castle nut off. 1:07

Alright, at this point we can go ahead and just remove the entire hub assembly. Alright, now we can go ahead and clean up the spindle so we can have a nice clean area to work with. And then we will start reassembly. Alright, now that we have everything out of the way we can see what is going on. What is going to happen is our backing plate is going to bolt on to this square flange right here with the four holes. Now, if your axle does not have that, what you need to do is get one of these flanges and have it welded on to your axle. Alright, one thing that we need to prepare is the backing plate. We will go ahead and pull the wires up and out of the way and we will route them through the plastic holder. That will keep them safe and out of the way so that they do not get jambed up between the flange and the backing plate itself. Then we will go ahead and install it on the flange. Two things that we want to remember is that the magnet always points towards the ground and, as you can see, the arm that the magnet is connected to, that bow always faces forward. 2:03

And then on the backside we will go ahead and install lock washers and nuts to put everything into place. Okay, let us go ahead and get our hub ready. I will take a finger full of grease and start off by putting it in the race. And then next we will go ahead and our bearing into the packer. You can do this by hand our use a device like we are using here. Pack the bearing full of grease. And then what will happen next is we will go ahead and the bearing inside there and then we will install the seal. In this instance, we actually have an E-Z Lube spindle. So, when we are done with this, we can actually add more grease. Basically, add as much grease as you can to the inside of the hub. If you do not have an E-Z Lube spindle, then just pack it as normal. Alright, at this point here you can actually use a special tool that distributes the force of installing it. Most people do not have this at home, so we are going to use a regular mallet and just lightly tap it in a circle until we get it even all of the way around. You can tell by the tone that you have it all of the way in there and flat. 3:08

Now we will go ahead and flip it over. And go ahead and do the same thing to the races and bearing. With that settled, we will just put a thin film of grease on the spindle and we will go ahead and reinstall the hub. Next we will go ahead and add the flat washer, then the tang washer and then the nut. When we tighten down the nut, what we want to do is run it up as far as we can with the tool. And back it on and off a few times, make sure the hub if fully seated. And then we will go ahead and tighten up the nut until it stops and then we will use whatever tab lines up with the nearest notch in the castle nut. Whichever tab you use, or notch, what you want to do is you do not want to tighten it to use the next one. You want to back it off to use the nearest one. That way, you do not over tighten the bearings. When they get extra pressure on them, they will get hot and wear out faster. And once we have that resolved, we will go ahead and push up the tab back into place. 4:23

Alright, the next thing that we are going to do is go ahead and adjust the brakes. And how we are going to do that is basically we are going to tighten up the brakes while rotating the hub until they just stop. When you can not rotate the hub by hand anymore, then we will go ahead and back it off ten clicks. And then check to see how much drag we have. The end result is we should have a very slight drag on the brakes on the hub. Now, ten clicks will get you pretty close to where you need to be. You may have to adjust it in or out depending on how much drag you get. Alright, we will go ahead and replace the caps on the back side of the backing plate. Then we will go back over to the other side of the axle and repeat the same process. And our next step would be to go ahead and put on the dust caps back on the end of the hubs. And we will just tap them into place. And there are a variety of different methods that you can do that with. We actually use a 2 inch conduit coupling. That actually works great on these types of dust caps. Okay, we have finished our installation of the backing plates and the hubs. And next time on This Old Trailer we will start next on the wiring components.

First off, Etrailer is awesome. I ordered two pairs of loaded plates and hubs on Sunday night and they were on my door step by Wednesday!.. Three issues with the plates. 1. On one plate, the two wires from the magnet were about cut in two on the back side of the plate right as they come out of the plastic retainer. Must be getting pinched somehow in shipping. 2. Both left plates had lubriplate grease where the brake pads rub the backing plate and at all pivot points. Neither of the right side ones did, requiring disassembly of the new plates to grease the spots that should have been. (Somebody had a bad day on the assembly line!). 3. Product information led me to believe that new backing plate nuts would be included. They were not, but new lug nuts were included with the wheel bearing kits. Only thing that I would suggest to Etrailer would be to carry replacement lock tabs for the bearings. Other than that, a couple of hours and brand new brakes & hubs all around. They are working great! Thanks Etrailer for the great products, prices & shipping! Steve21416

An unbeatable value over buying any single or multiple parts of the brake system for trailers. Everything being assembled and properly lubed by the factory makes this a no-brainer for doing any brake maintenance. Without knowing any of the prior history of the new-to-me trailer, I have more confidence now knowing that I have good brakes backing me up. I would highly recommend this assembly over just getting individual parts. I was also happy to see the "Made in the USA" sticker inside each brake assembly!41254

Direct factory part replacement. Complete backing plate swap is the easiest. Spray nuts with penetrating oil. Remove four old nuts on the back and install the new plate and re-use the nuts and your all set. Solder the circuits back together and your done.26129

Product arrived intact and right on time. The items were well packed and the included instructions coupled inst with the inst. vidieos on the web site should make this a no brainer. I shopped the net and local supply.co. and your price was competitive and when you throw in free shipping no contest. This electric brake setup will be installed on a 2 axle utility trailer to bring it in to compiance with state law. A freindly state inspecter suggested strongley that I do that. 22626

Easy installation. Except for the way you run the wires through the backing plate. One wire was cut in half and the other one was bare wire. Also one of the adjusters fell out during shipping. It took a little extra time to repair the wire since there is not much room. A little aggravating but not insurmountable. Possibly during shipping the wires get squeezed pretty hard at the backing plate. You might want to address this problem..16712

The 10" Electric Brake Assemblies were quite easy to install (on my dual axle trailer which had no brake system) after watching eTrailer's video, (http://www.etrailer.com/tv-Install-Electric-Brakes-Trailer.aspx). I ordered the 4 brake assemblies on a Sunday night and had them at my door the following Tuesday when I got home from work. And this was without a shipping upgrade (WOW!). 14425

I received my product in very timely manner but it was damaged and not usualbe due to the wires being crushed and bare wires exposed plus some of the brake componets had dislodged in shippment. etrailer was very quick to remedy the problem by sending another shippment the next day and it arrived in mostly good condition due to some more componets being dislodged again in shipping but I was able to put them back in place and the brake assembly is now in great condition. I also ordered a set of bearing and seals for my application and they arrived in very good condition and now I am ready to reassemble my Travel Trailer and hit the road again. These heavy items (the brake assemblies) do need more vigirous shipping measures to prevent the problems I had with my order. I will gladly use etrailer again and will recomend them to my friends. 46084

Product was as advertised. Form, fit and function were excellant. Assembly was a breeze, especially with the non-polarity of the wires. Just bolt them on, plug them in, adjust them, and go. Recommend buyers also purchase the 4 nuts that hold each backing plate onto the trailer's mounting flange. They do not come with the assemblies, and 7/16 x 20 (fine thread) nuts are getting difficult to come by. I went to my local Lowes to purchase 16 nuts and lock washers for the 4 assemblies I purchased.. They only had 17 nuts in the entire store.42571

I have a dual axle race car trailer which had only single axle brakes. I ordered the left and right 10" brake assemblies and matching hub and drum assemblies. I also needed a magnet for the existing brakes. The box arrived a little worse for wear, no fault of etrailer, but all the pieces I had ordered were there and in fine shape. The order arrived sooner than I had expected and the follow-up by etrailer, checking to make I was satisfied and to provide helpful links to related information, was truly appreciated. Great deal! Only cost a few dollars more to replace the backing plate and components than to purchase new shoes. If you're debating whether to replace just the shoes, or the whole backing plate I'd recommend you replace the whole backing plate. It's far easier (4 nuts vs 3 springs and more), and ensures that everything is in good working order. One caveaut, however: it's not easy to replace backing plates when the nuts are severely rusted (in my case, it took cutting most of them off). FYI, I'm using these with drums marked "8-249-07" NOTE: You'll need (4) 7/16-20 nuts if you're not planning on using the originals. Bolts are included.30303

E-trailer is a great company to deal with. The electric brake assemblies were exactly the same are the original which insured installation was smooth and easy. Support after the sale is unsurpassed. They follow-up after the sale with instructional video clips to insure there are no "hiccups". After installation of the new brakes, I road tested and calibrated the controller (a device that I previously purchased from E-trailer). E-trailer was referred to me by a friend. I will definitely use them again and will not hesitate to refer them to others. Lastly the assemblies are American made and the shipping was free, could not improve on service, product or value. Quickest and easiest brake job I've ever done. Replaced all 4 wheels in a matter of a few hours. Did not have to remember how everything goes back together, just 4 bolts to remove and reinstall, and done. Best of all, made in the USA! Keep Americans working! 22021

See my review of the RH side brake assembly. Great value and so easy to change a caveman could do it... as long as he has some penetrating oil to get the old retaining nuts off.17705

Ordered on Sunday paid for 3-5 day delivery (very reasonable) package arrived 5 days later. Everything was in the package and the one brake set I have installed fit perfectly. What else can you ask for? The rain to stop so I can install the other 3 sets. Very pleased with ordering and shipping. Haven't had to contact support so I can't comment.17084

Cost of parts was excellent. Delivery timeframe was beyond expectations. The parts were exactly as requested. They were exact replacements to the original brake assemblies. They were replacement parts for or fifth wheel camper. Brakes had just failed on a return trip from Florida.16398

I'm not sure which I am impressed more with, the item I purchased or the customer service. First of all the item was exactly what I wanted. More importantly it was made here in the U. S. A. I tend to be critical of customer service and so far this company has got it right! Thanks so much for the prompt service! I will be buying all my trailer parts here. 8334

On-line Ordering Made Easy I dont think i have ever ordered parts so easy than from e-trail. All the parts i was looking from were listed and the ones that i didnt find that were odd i typed in and they popped up. Now that was awesome. We buy from a other big trailer company normally and they didnt even have listings for the stuff i checking on or even match the price if they put it together piece by piece. i ordered on the weekend and had them on wednesday morning. The parts were right and they are on the trailer now. Thanks! 4906

I was very pleased with the service I recieved and proptness of the delivery of my parts. Amanda was great at getting the 4 brake assemblys out to me so that I had enough time to get them replaced before our big trip. Your web site on trouble shooting helped out on trouble shooting that it was in the brake magnets. I had one magnet that had the brakes hanging do to high ohms reading. being able to buy the whole assemblys from E-trailer made it very easy to do the change and saved a great amount of time for me. Thanks to everyone who works at E-Trailer.43570

  • Is a Brake Controller Necessary for Electric Trailer Brakes
  • Yes, a brake controller mounted in the cab is necessary to operate electric brakes. Hyrdraulic brakes are typically operated by an actuator in the trailer coupler. The Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90185 is one of our best and most popular brake controllers. I will add a link to it below. Depending on your vehicle, we may have custom wiring kit for it that will plug directly into your truck or SUV and not require splicing any connections. • Since the brake shoes and drums are wearing evenly, the angled magnet wear is not a problem. They do not have to wear even. As the magnet is charged it swings the arm out and may put an angle in the wear. Even with all brand new parts this can happen. If the surface inside the drum that the magnet attaches to is worn unevenly, the magnet will too. The grease is degrading for probably one or both of a couple reasons. Certain base compounds for grease are incompatible. Mixing these greases can

  • If you do not have drums already but have standard idler hubs, we would first need to select a drum, then make sure the brake assembly will fit inside that drum. As you guessed, the way to do that is pull apart the hub and bearing numbers. For example, we can say you pull the hub apart and find you have the L68149 inner and L44649 outer bearing configuration, and your wheels are 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. With that information we know that you need the Dexter drum assembly, part # 84546UC3. Now

Some states require brakes on both axles of a tandem axle trailer.
