Video Transcript for Dexter 12" Left Hand 7K Electric Trailer Brakes Review

Today we are going to take a look at the 12 Electric Brake Assembly for the left hand side, part number 23-180. This is a 12 by 2 electric brake assembly. Measure of the diameter across the shoe, and theres our 12 number. Then we will measure the width of the shoe, and thats where we get our 2 figure. The brake assembly when compared to the right hand side is good for trailer axels up to 7,000 pounds. It utilizes the 5 bolt mounting pattern, so you want to make sure that your trailer axel has the same mounting configuration.

Also included are a pair of wire leads that you will make your electrical connection. It doesnt matter which lead you use for ground and which you use for your brake lead so as long as you have a good electrical connection. This is the manually adjusting brake assembly, so when you first install it, and over time when the shoes wear you will need to adjust to adjust the tension. You will do this by opening the star wheel that will open this pin up and expand the shoes so you could set the proper amount of tension between the brake assembly and your drum. This is the left hand side, and we know this, because we will look at the shorter shoe, and the shorter shoe needs to be facing the front of the trailer, and the longer shoe will face the rear.

Because these are electric assemblies you dont want to use them on boat or marine applications. The way the brakes work, the drum is rotating around the brake assembly, as you apply brakes inside the vehicle the electro magnet becomes charged and it adheres to the inside of the drum. As the drum drags on the magnet it is going to pull this arm, and open the brake assembly to apply pressure inside. And that does it for the 12 Electric Brake Assembly for the left hand side, part number 23-180. .
