Dexter 12" Left Hand Electric Trailer Brakes Review

Video Transcript for Dexter 12" Left Hand Electric Trailer Brakes Review

Today we're going to show you the 12" Electric Brake Assembly for Left-Hand Side, part number 23-105. This is a 12" x 2" brake assembly. We measured the diameter across the shoes and there's our 12". Then we measure the width of the shoe and there's our 2" figure. When paired up with the right-hand side assembly, these brakes are good for trailer axles rated up to 6,000 pounds. The assembly mounts on a 5 bolt mounting pattern.

So you want to check your trailer axle and make sure that it's got the same 5 bolt pattern. There are a pair of wire leads that you will use for your electrical connections. It doesn't matter what you use for ground and which you use for brake feed so long as you have a good solid electrical connection. These are manually adjusted brakes. So when you first install them and set them up and over time as the shoes wear, you will need to adjust the brakes.

To do this, push on the star wheel and it will rotate and expand this pin, opening up the shoes and making the brakes fit tight. So this is an electric brake assembly. You're not going to want to use it on boat trailer or other marine trailer applications. The way the brake assembly works is the drum rotates with the wheel around the brake assembly and you apply the brakes pressure inside the vehicle. This magnet will become charged and it will adhere to the drum.

As the drum moves, it's going to drag along the magnet, pulling this arm which in turn will open up the brake assembly and apply pressure. You can identify this is the left-hand side by looking at the length of the shoes. The shorter shoe is to be facing the front of the trailer, whereas the longer shoe is going to be facing the back. And that does it for the 12'' Electric Brake Assembly for Left-Hand Side, part number 23-105.

This was not the first time I have purchased from "etrailer.com". The first time being several years ago. I purchase may products on line and honestly this company/source for the products they offer and the prices, processing, shipping and support they provide is very honestly as good as I have ever encountered. Their staff are completely helpful and "KNOW" the products they sell. I have my own RV and have hauled/delivered RV's Commercally for years, through out the lower 48, Canada and Alaska. No, I don't write reviews very often and only after I have honest experiences with the sources that enable me to evaluate them, good or bad. 31057

EXCELLENT...... START TO FINISH. Fantastic service, great prices, quality products. Here's a before and after picture. It only took 30 minutes and basic tools to make the replacement. So much better than trying to clean up the old rusty one. Thanks again, Bill Borland in Michigan 23873

  • Mounting Holes on 12 Inch by 2 Inch Break Assemblies 23-105 and 23-106
  • The brake assembly mounting pattern is different than the wheel assemblies for trailers or cars. The difference being that the wheel has to rotate in balance to provide a smooth ride but the brake assembly is stationary with the drum and wheel spinning around it. Measuring between the bolt holes, the measurement is 2 inches on center for all bolt holes except the widest pair, on the bottom, which is 3 inches on center. The diameter of the holes in the backing plate for securing the brake assembl

  • Installation Troubleshooting New Brake Assemblies on a RV Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • There are several reasons why your trailer brakes may not be performing correctly with a new brake assembly installed. You will need to check that the wiring to the new brake assembly is grounded properly. A bad ground connection can cause many different situations. Your new brakes and magnet will take a short time to break in also. Next I would check the adjustment of the brakes on both sides. Make sure that the brakes are adjusted properly. I would also check the adjustment of the brake contro

  • Will This Brake Assembly Fit my Dexter 6,000 Pound Axles
  • I pulled one of these off the shelves and checked the measurements against yours. The holes should match up and since this brake assembly is for 6,000 pound Dexter axles which is what you have, you should have no problem.

  • Compatibility of Dexter and Titan Brake Assemblies
  • No worries about the compatibility. Since the assemblies are the same size and the bolt patterns are identical, the Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly, part # T4489500 will work great on your boat trailer.

  • How to Find Wheel Bolt Pattern to Find the Correct Replacement Trailer Brakes
  • There are a couple of methods you can use to determine bolt pattern of the wheels themselves. First, you can use the number of lugs and the bolt circle. For an even number of lugs, measure the center to center distance of 2 lugs directly across from each other. If you had 6 lugs and the distance measured is 5 inches, you have a 6 on 5 bolt pattern. For an odd number of lugs, it is a little more difficult. Measure from the center of 1 lug directly across to the center point between 2 lugs on t

  • How to Test Electric Trailer Brake Magnets on Dual 6,000 Pound Dexter Axles
  • I would check the magnets for wear before going on to test them with a meter. If the magnets show abnormal wear or if you can see the windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet then they will need to be replaced. To further test your magnets, first make sure the trailer is not connected when performing this test. If the trailer is connected, you run the risk of shorting out a brake controller or various other electrical components. To test the brake magnets with

  • How to Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes on a 2000 HandS Tandem Axle Trailer
  • Adjusting trailer brakes is pretty easy once you have the brake axle raised and safely blocked up. Start by removing the rubber plugs installed over the adjustment holes on the brake backing plates. Then, adjust the brakes until you cannot easily turn the brake drum by hand. Now, back off the adjuster until you feel a slight drag of the brake shoes on the drum, usually about 10 clicks. Once this is done proceed to the brake on the other side of the axle and perform the same task. A brake adju

  • Trailer Brakes Only Work When Manual Switch on Brake Controller is Activated
  • The controller is only putting out voltage when the manual switch is applied on the brake controller, but not when the vehicle brakes are applied, is that correct? The most likely problem is that the controller is not getting the input that the vehicle brakes are being applied. When the trailer is hitched up with the transmission in park, use a circuit tester like part # 3808 on the red wire exiting the rear of the controller. You should show voltage on the wire when the trucks brake pedal is

  • Troubleshooting Factory Electric Brake Controller Not Working on a 2005 Ford F-350
  • I agree that you most likely have an issue on the truck side. The voltage at the brake magnets when the vehicle is sitting still and the brake pedal is pressed will only read a small amount with the Ford integrated brake controller on your truck. If you are using the manual slide to activate the trailer brakes you should get somewhere between 12 and 13 volts with the controller set to the maximum setting. If this is the case there may be an issue with the brake controller. The 2005 and 06 For

  • What Position Should the Shorter Brake Shoe Be in for Installation of Electric Brakes on a Trailer
  • You are correct, the shorter shoe should be forward on electric brake assemblies like the 12 inch Electric Brake Assembly, # 23-105, that your selected. In my experience, the shorter shoe is always the shoe that is pressed against the drum first, and the leverage from that connection is used the activate the longer shoe. brakes are engineered in this way to provide smooth braking performance. For your Dexter 5,500 lb axles you should install the shorter shoes forward. All of our brake assemb

  • Will 6,000 Pound Trailer Brake Assemblies Work on an Axle Rated for 5,200 Pounds
  • Your trailer most likely has a 6,000 pound axle that is rated for 5,200 pounds because that is what the rest of the trailer can handle. So you will be able to use the 6,000 pound brake assemblies like # 23-105 for the left side, and # 23-106 for the right side.

  • Trailer Brake Recommendation for a 6,000 Pound Bull Dog Axle
  • It sounds like you need the Hayes/AL-KO 12 x 2 Electric Brake Assembly, # 185100, (left hand) and # 185150, (right hand). I have measured the 4 hole pattern on these brakes before. The top holes are 3.09 inches on center and 2.55 inches apart on center for the bottom 2 holes. Top to bottom they are 3.40 inches apart on center. The holes can accommodate a 7/16 inch bolt size.
