Installation of Tow Ready Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box underneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the four wires - ground, power, brake switch and brake power - of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If you do not have a harness, or you need a new one, the Tow Ready wiring adapter will serve the same purpose.

The brake controller adapter I purchased from Etrailer was very reasonably priced, with reasonably priced and speedy shipping. When I recieved it, I went right out and installed it in my truck and it worked flawlessly. I won't hesitate to buy from Etrailer again and would recommend Etrailer to friends and family in the future. Thank you for an smooth transaction and a product that works precisely as advertised. • What Is Each Wire on the Universal Brake Control Wiring Adapter, item # 20263, Used For?
  • The # 20263 Universal wiring adapter is not the correct adapter for the 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. The connector will fit but You will need to remove the blue locking clip and switch the red wire from the top left, looking at the connector with the locking clip in the down position, to the bottom right connector terminal (opposite corner). To get the red wire out you will need to press on a very small locking tab on the connection side of the terminal. This is the only change that will need t

  • Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2002 Chevy Suburban
  • Although your friends Suburban might be equipped with the factory tow package, the package did not include a brake controller like it sometimes does in later models. A controller will need to be installed. Not to worry, though. Installing a controller will be simple. If he does not already have a controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The wiring adapter, part # 3025P will also be needed. One end of the adapter would plug into the rear of the P2, the other plugs i

  • Wiring harness for brake controller on 2000 GMC Pickup
  • Is the harness you have aftermarket or the OEM? The aftermarket Wiring Adapters we carry, such as the part number 20263, have 4 leads which would wire up color for color with the wires coming off of the back of the wiring harness. If you have the OEM harness, it would have 5 leads, and would wire as follows: the red harness wire would connect to the black wire on the brake controller, the light blue harness wire connects to the red brake controller wire, the black harness wire connects to the

  • Do the Wires on the Brake Control Wiring Adapter Match Up Color for Color with the Brake Controller
  • Yes, the wires on the adapter, item # 20263, will match up, color for color, with the wires on your brake controller. If you have a proportional brake controller the brakes will not energize when setting still because the controller uses the forward momentum of the vehicle to energize the brakes with the appropriate amount of power to stop the trailer. The controller will need to be adjusted, after warming the brakes up a bit by starting and stopping a few times, using the directions in the

  • Brake Controller Wiring Adapter for a 1999 Chevy Suburban
  • I am sorry, but the Universal Brake Control Wiring Adapter 1999-02 Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, item # 20263, is only for the 2000-2002 Chevy Suburban with a New Body Style. It does not fit the 1999 Suburban. I just checked for you, and we do not have a custom brake controller adapter for the 1999 Suburban, which leads me to believe there is not a port available for the brake controller under your dash. Some models do have the brake (blue) and hot lead (orange or red) wires already ran from under t

  • Trailer Brakes Locking Up on 2002 Silverado with 6-Way Trailer Connector
  • I suspect that it is not your brake controller that is causing your problem, especially since this is occurring when the controller is disconnected. Are the trailer brakes immediately locking up as soon as the trailer is plugged in? There are two accepted methods of wiring a 6-way trailer connector. One method uses the center pin of the connector for the 12-volt accessory circuit, the other uses the center pin for the brake output circuit. If the vehicle is wired using one method, and the tra

  • Brake Controller Installation Details and Running Wires on a 2002 GMC 2500 Pickup
  • The best practice for running wires through the firewall on your 2002 GMC 2500 HD pickup, is to find an existing opening that has a grommet and use that. You'll also want to make sure that you keep the wiring well away from any moving or hot parts. In the absence of an existing opening, you might have to drill to make your own. In that case, make sure you are aware of what is behind the spot where you plan to drill, so you don't drill through anything important. You will need to use a grommet

  • Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring Adapter for a 2001 Chevy Tahoe
  • If the trailer has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90185. The Prodigy is our best selling brake controller, because it is very easy to operate. You will also need the Brake Controller Wiring Adapter, part # 20263 that would allow the controller to plug into the port located in the junction box under the dash. We have many online resources at hand to assist with your installation. We have both a GM vehicle Br

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller on 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 HD
  • First, use a circuit tester like part # 40376 on the black wire exiting the rear of the controller to verify that power is reaching it. If not, there is a 20 or 30 amp fuse in the power distribution box, located under the hood on the drivers side fender, that is most likely blown. Once the fuse is replaced, you will want to inspect the brake output circuit on the trailer connector, tracing it back to the trailer brake magnets to determine what caused the fuse to let go. Skipping this step will p

  • Brake Controller that Can Easily be Moved From 2000 to 2006 Chevy Silverado
  • The Tekonsha P2, part # 90885 would be ideal for what you are wanting to do. The P2 includes a quick disconnect that would wire to your OEM wiring adapters that came with each truck. To accomplish what you are wanting to do, you would need an extra quick disconnect, part # 7894 and a replacement mounting pocket, part # 7686. Once installed, the mounting pocket and quick disconnect would remain in the vehicle, and the controller can be easily moved to the other truck. Keep in mind that you

  • How to Wire a Brake Controller on a 1999 Chevy Suburban K1500
  • Your 1999 Chevrolet Suburban will need to be hard wired for installation of a brake controller. The Suburban did not get the wiring update that the pickup did until the 2000 model year, so the Universal Brake Control Wiring Adapter, item # 20263, will not work on your Suburban. You will need to splice the red wire from the back of the brake controller to the wire at the back of the brake pedal switch that carries power only when the brake pedal is pressed. You will also need to wire the brake

The wire colors for this adapter will match up color for color to the wires coming out from the brake controller.
