Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2006 Kia Sedona

Today were going to show you a popular upgrade. We have here a four pole flat that has been installed on a vehicle. The owner has a boat trailer now and it has a five wire flat. So were going to convert that four wire to a five wire flat. We will show you how to deal with part number 20036 which is the adapter itself, and the bracket which is part number 20046. Our first step we need to do is take off the four pole and then well uninstall the bracket and put in the new bracket. It may take some force, but you have to pull to get this out of here. We actually used a rubber mallet to tap it a little bit, now this bracket can come off which we have previously loosened up. Now well install our new bracket and it will go in the same spot as before. What were going to do next is get our four pole ready which we have cleaned out with WD-40 and then were going to put in some dielectric grease. Well put that inside here and then were going to attach our four pole from our adapter inside there.

Now our five pole will get mounted to our adapter here. One thing I like to do when I have it connected since its semi-permanent is put a zip tie all the way around it so it will never come off. Now were going to install our five pole. Next were going to install our lead going to our reverse light. You see it comes in the kit with the other half and we put some dielectric grease in there. Now well install those together, then well wrap some electrical tape around it since this will be a semi-permanent connection also. What we have down here is zip tie our wire harness together to make it nice and as compact as possible, the next step is to find a place to hide it. If you can hide it behind the bumper if you have room, great. If not, since we do not have much room, were going to tuck it up underneath the bracket here and zip tie it. Our next step is to run the blue wire up to the reverse light. Now we need to take off our taillight so we can get to our reverse light wire. We have the back of the taillight exposed here, if you look at the front you can tell which one is your reverse light. Its pretty easy to find, in this case its on the top here and it has two wires. The black one will typically be the ground but double check with your vehicle. We also have a white wire which looks like its going to be positive. Well trace our connection down and run our connection right around here. We have some pretty close quarters running the wire through so what were going to do is take this simple wire here and use anything you want around the house just as long as you can manipulate it and keep it in a straight line.

Well run it down to the bottom and well tie it off to it and pull it back through. We have our wire through, and well just wrap our wire around the other wire. Now we can pull it back up through. Like we said earlier were going to attach to this reverse light lead right about here. Well use a quick splice which is a device that connects two wires together and comes with the kit. You simply just slide it on like so, then the other half of the wire is going to get pushed in along side of it. There is a stop on one side so what you want to do is make sure that the wire will go all the way through and go across the metal here. This is so the metal can do its job when you squeeze it with a pair of pliers it will make the connection and cut through the plastic. Give it a tug to make sure you have got it right. Now you snap your cover on and now were ready to reinstall our light and put our wire connector back in. Now we can reinstall. Well go ahead and give it the acid test and ground it here and well the check the reverse light lead on the outside here. Now well put it in reverse and try it and it looks like it works. To recap we used part numbers 20036, the four to five way adapter and 20046, the bracket itself.

Overall -- satisfied Easy to install with a quick phone call to etrailer. I tapped into the one wire in the factory 6 pin connector that was not used with my 4 pole wiring harness. My only issue is that I would have liked the wire that taps in the reverse wire to be 1 foot longer, then it would be the exact lenght of the 4 pole wiring harness I used on my Odyssey347

Product is good I suppose. Instructions say "Use blue wire tap (provided)" but give no clue where the wire is to hook to. Also I paid extra for UPS ground two day but it took a week. The main harness (this is just an adapter four pin to five pin) I got from Amazon. It arrived in two days and the instructions were clear, had photos and it was a piece of cake to install.57298

This was exactly what I needed. Our Nissan Pathfinder came with a 4 prong plug already installed, but our new boat trailer has a 5 prong plug. This fit perfectly, works great (already used it this past weekend) and the installation was easy, thanks in part to the instructional video included on the product page. Would definitely recommend to anyone that needs to go from a 4 prong to 5 prong for your trailer.18183

  • Hooking up the 4 Pole to 5 Pole Flat Converter to a 2008 Dodge Durango
  • Unfortunately, there is not a standard color wire used by vehicle manufacturers for the taillight functions. In our experience, the Chrysler back-up light is run with a violet wire, and the Jeep vehicle uses a brown wire for back-up lights. I do not have information on a Dodge truck. In any case, you will want to use a circuit tester, item # 3808, to make sure you have the right wire.

This will allow you to tow any trailer with a 4-pole connector.
