Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Okay, today on this 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, were going to install part number 90195 from Tekonsha. This is the P3 Brake Controller. The first thing were going to do is get underneath the dash and find the factory tow harness for our brake controller. Well go ahead and look up underneath the dash and over towards the left hand side looking up. Therell be some wires taped up. On this vehicle, its actually pretty easy to see.

You should see a red and blue wire, a white wire, a light blue wire, and an all white wire. Well go ahead and pull the wires down so we can work with them. We get our wires pulled out, then well go ahead and start connecting our wires for our brake controller harness to the factory towing harness. Now our red wire with the black stripe is going to be a 12-volt power supply, so that will be hooked up to the black wire going to the brake controller. Our blue wire from the tow package will go to the blue wire on the brake controller.

Then well hook up our white wire on our factory tow harness to the white wire on the brake controller harness and that will be our ground. Now were going to use the blue wire with the white stripe for our brake signal. Well verify it by testing it with the brake pedal. All right, that works. So thats going to be hooked up to the red wire on our brake control harness.

Now well go ahead and take a moment and cover up our connection with some electrical tape and make it look nice. Then well start installing the bracket underneath our dashboard. In this case were going to use one of the existing fasteners. Well undo the screw, well go ahead and slip the bracket behind the plastic, then reinstall the screw. Off to the right sides is another plastic panel that we can use to attach the other side of our bracket to.

So well use one of the provided self-tapping screws to attach it. Now we can go ahead and install the brake controller. Well take the wire harness for the brake controller and plug it into the back of the brake controller. Then well put the brake controller in place in the bracket and attach the hardware. There will be one screw on each side. Well go ahead and use some zip ties to help secure the wires and keep them safe and out of the way. Next we will go ahead and go underneath the hood of the vehicle over to the power junction box, where we have to hook up the red wire for power supply. Its taped to a harness thats between the fender well and the junction box. Well go ahead and pull it out. Sometimes its easy to see, sometimes its kind of hard to find. In this case we used a piece of heavy-gauge wire to help hook it and pull it out. Now well go ahead and attach it to one of the studs thats located on the end of the junction box. Now to make our connection, were going to use an 8-milimeter nut, and that will be our part number 185917. The thread pitch on this 8-milimeter nut will be 1.25. Well go ahead and tighten it down then reinstall the cover for our junction box. Now well go ahead and test it out. Well go ahead and look at the brake controller, and as soon as we hook it up to wire you can see we have power going to the brake controller. Well push the brake pedal down and you can see that it says no connection, so thats working. Now well go ahead and plug a trailer up to the truck and the screen will show a connection. Well go ahead and push the brake pedal. Now it will show us a minimal amount of power. Now well go ahead and try the manual override. With that, everything looks like its working. And that will finish it for our install of part number 90195, the P3 Brake Controller on our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado.
