Today on this 2006 Jeep Wrangler we will be installing Curt hitch part number 13430. Before we get started with our hitch installation, we are going to go ahead and show you a couple of final install dimensions that will help make choosing your hitch accessories a little bit easier. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is going to measure 16-1/4 inches. And from the center of the pin hole to clear the spare tire on the back is going to be approximately 8 inches. And now we will go ahead and move on to the installation. 0:26
We are underneath the vehicle and we are taking a look over here at the driver side frame rail. We want to go ahead and point out the mounting locations that we are going to be using to install our trailer hitch. You can see we have an existing bolt here that is holding the bumper to the frame. We are going to be removing this bolt and reusing the existing weld nut in there as our rearmost attaching point for our trailer hitch. If we move to the outboard side of the frame, you can see we have a couple of existing holes here. We are going to be using the lower forward one here as the second attaching point for the trailer hitch. You can see we have the bolt here that we have removed from the frame. Now we are going to be using new hardware to put the hitch up in position. You will notice with the hardware kit, there are two different size bolts that come as a replacement for this bolt and that is because some Jeeps use one size weld nut and some other Jeeps use a different size weld nut. So what you want to do is go ahead and take the existing bolt and just compare it to the new hardware. And what you are looking for is the one with the same diameter and same thread pitch as well. And again you can just verify that by running the bolt into the weld nut. 1:28
Once that is determined, we can go ahead and take the 12 millimeter bolts again for this application and we will go ahead and put the hitch up into position. If you are tightening down the bolts into the weld nuts to the bottom of the frame and if you go to the side of the frame and see that your hitch is not exactly aligned with the weld nut, what you could do is just leave the bolt at the bottom of the frame a little bit loose. Just take a screw driver, it into the hole and you can get the hitch to align properly that way. And you can even use that and hold it in position and go ahead and finish tightening the bolt up. Once we have the bolt tightened at the bottom of the frame and the hole in the side of the frame aligned, we can next take and start installing the hardware in the side of the frame. 2:08
What we are going to do is use the handle nut that is provided with the installation kit. And this is basically going to work as a weld nut inside the frame. We are going to feed it through the hole here at the bottom of the frame, the large oblong one, and take and just feed it over the hole in the side of the frame. And then from there we will take the 1/2 inch bolt along with the lock washer. Go ahead and feed it through and tighten it into the handle nut. And we just want to repeat that set up for the passenger side as well and then we will go back through and torque our bolts down. And with that, that will conclude the installation of part number 13430.

The product met my expectations. It was a fairly easy to install, except that it was a little tight. I needed to bend the arm out a couple of mm. 65580

Cons: Handle nuts broke off before I could torque it. Had to drill a hole into the frame as I could not align it, it was literally 1 mm off. Pros: Great customer service from Curt, they definitely stand behind their product. This hitch sticks out little more compared to other hitches. Combined with Yakima DoubleDown Ace rack it cleared the stock spare tire on my 2004 Rubicon.48017
