Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Volkswagen Touareg

Today we are going to install part number 13220 from Curt. We are going to install this hitch on a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg. The first step involved is actually removing the tail lights. There are two screws on each side of the tail light. We will undo those and then take off the tail lights. We have got the light unbolted, and then we will go ahead and just disconnect it from the vehicle for now and put it in a safe spot. And then go ahead and repeat it for the other side. All right, the next thing we need to do is go ahead and take off the bumper cover. That is going to be from here on down. We will start behind the tail light and then work our way behind the fender well and go on from there. And then go ahead and do the same thing on the other tail light.

Inside the fender well here, we are going to undo these torque screws here. It looks like there are about five torque screws inside the fender well that will need to be removed. The next thing we will do is take out the four bolts that are involved in the bumper here. All right, when you have got these screws taken out, you can pop the bumper off from the side by the fender well. And then do that on both sides. And to completely take the bumper off, we need to disconnect this electrical connection here. I believe it is for the backup sensors.

With the bumper cover off, the next thing I do is take off this steel bumper itself. The hitch actually replaces this chunk of steel right here, so this will be a leftover part going all the way across. And to remove this bumper, we have got four bolts. Remove those, and depending on the size, on some models they are reusable and on sometimes you will have to use the existing hardware that came with the hitch. You will not know that until you actually take out the bolts and measure them. Remember when we were talking about the hardware being different sizes? Well, this is the time to figure out what is going on. When you take these bolts off, this is the factory bolt. If the hardware that came out of the vehicle originally was bigger than this and it should be a 14-millimeter then you just reuse the old hardware, and do not worry about the hardware that came with the hitch only if you get the bolts that are bigger than the 14-millimeter ones.

At this point we can go ahead and install the hitch onto the vehicle. And this is a heavy piece of equipment, so it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands involved. All right, at this point we can go ahead and give the bolts their final torque, as specified in the instructions. Next, what you want to do is remove the old foam top from the steel beam that you took off earlier, and that will just sit right back into place on top of the hitch. And it will stay there just like that.

Now we can go ahead and reattach the bumper cover. First, we will make our connection for the backup sensors, and then we will pop the fascia back on. With the bumper cover loosely installed, there are little tracks in the side here that kind of hold against the body and slide it forward and it goes right in. And then just go ahead and basically start reinstalling the screws that you took out. All right, with our lights installed and everything back together, that concludes our install of part number 13220 from Curt on our 2007 Volkswagen Touareg.

Just purchased for an 05 VR6 Touareg. Quick shipping, hitch looks great, and at a good price. I have purchased other Curt products and been very happy. I will install it this weekend if the freezing rain stops.6654

Toureg Trailer Hitch The service, product and direction that I received from this company was phenomenal. Really, exceptional. In this day and age there are not too many companies that come even close to what etrailer.com delivered on. I had hesitation on a DIY install of a trailer hitch on my 2008 Touareg. I submitted a request for info. and received detail response to my questions in addition to instructions for the install. Turned out to be a breeze, no problems whatsoever. Thanks to everyone at etrailer. Awesome5582

We bought a trailer hitch for a VW Toureg and the shipping was 3 to 5 days faster at no additional charge. The installation video was very helpful and the installation went without a "hitch". No pun intended. We will use etrailer again as we have needs. Ed L26596

Fitment was perfect on a 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. The bolts provided did not fit (wrong thread size), but the OEM bolts were fine. The bumper cover required trimming, I used a die-cutter air tool. The finished product came out looking extremely clean, like a factory fit... and was significantly more affordable than the OEM Porsche hitch.24551

Very good product but the fit wasn't perfect. It bolted up no issues, and installation was pretty much like the video. However when putting the bumper cover back on the 2" hitch receiver hits the fascia a bit. That made it very difficult to re-screw in the lower 4 bolts of the bumper fascia without bending the metal support (sheet metal) that the lower fascia bolts back into. 23355

Not only is this hitch a great product, etrailer.com is a great company. I work in customer support and I must say this is the best customer support I have ever seen. I ordered this hitch Friday night and it shipped Saturday. I received an email from etrailer.com literally an hour after the hitch arrived with a link to an installation video which made installation a breeze. The video was very detailed. Do not hesitate to order any of your towing products from this company. Thank you etrailer.com, Travis14797

  • Difficulty of Installing the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13220 on a 2010 Audi Q7
  • I was an English and Literature professor a few years back so I know that academia can produce modern day renaissance men and women capable of installing a trailer hitch. With that said, the instructions state that the estimated install time for the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13220, is 3 hours (90 minutes for a pro). We have a scale of difficulty for installing trailer hitches. It is a 10-based scale with 1 being equivalent to attaching two legos together and 10 being quantum m

To install, you would need to unscrew and disconnect the tail lights. Then you would need to unbolt and remove the plastic bumper cover. • Converting a 4-Pole Wiring Harness to 5-Pole on a 2004 VW Touareg for Towing a Boat Trailer
  • Since you have the # 118509, custom wiring installed on your Touareg, you have two options. You can use the 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, item # 47515, or you can cut the 4-Pole connector off of the harness and splice in a 5-Way connector, item # 20016. In either case the blue wire will be routed to the vehicle reverse light circuit, behind one of the vehicle tail lights, and spliced in there. Then, when the vehicle is in reverse, the electric lockout on your surge coupler will kee

  • I spoke with my contact at Curt about Trailer Hitch # 13220. He stated that on your 2004 Volkswagen Touareg the rear panel that is removed for hitch installation cannot be re-installed.
