Today on this 2001 Jeep Cherokee we are going to be installing Curt hitch part number 13084. Before we get started with the hitch installation we are going to show you a couple of final installed dimensions that are going to help make choosing your hitch accessories a little bit easier. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is going to measure 15 inches and from the center of the pin hole to clear the rear edge of the bumper is going to be about five inches. Now we will move on to our installation. 00:24
We are underneath the vehicle and we want to take a look at the frame rails to show you where the hitch is going to mount to the Cherokee and the first thing I want to note is that the Jeep Cherokees have a couple of different frame options. Whether it be weld nuts on the one side or just open holes, so you might want to take a look at your frame first to determine which type you have and check with the directions to make sure you have the appropriate hardware. Looking at this particular model, starting over on the passenger side of the vehicle you can see here at the end of the frame rail we have got three existing exposed weld nuts and those are going to provide our three rear most attaching points for our hitch. 00:59
If we follow forward there is an existing bolt in the frame that is holding the exhaust bracket to the frame and that is going to provide our fourth attaching point. Move over to the driver side and you can see there are no weld nuts in the frame, we have got just regular existing holes that we are going to be using to attach the hitch to the frame. We are going to be using the two rear most ones here, the larger oblong hole one here, and finally the fourth hole here. At this point I am going to start putting our hardware into position and over here on the driver side with the holes we are actually going to be fishing a carriage bolt and block assembly inside the frame down into position for the three forward most holes. We are going to start with the forward most attaching hole and what we are going to do is take the threaded end of the bolt leader, slide it in the bottom of the frame through the attaching hole, we are going to to feed it through the opening at the end of the frame rail just like so. We will next take the block and slide it onto the bolt leader and then we will take the carriage bolt and we will be wrapping the threads of the bolt leader around the threads of the carriage bolt. Then we will them one at a time inside the frame and pull them down into position. 02:07
We are going to continue doing that for the next two holes and for the rear most attaching hole on the driver side we are going to be using a little bit different set up. We will be using the smaller block and then a regular hex head bolt. Moving over to the passenger side of the vehicle we are going to need to remove the rear most bolt. We are also going to need to clean the exposed weld nuts here at the end of the frame rail. To do that we are going to be using a spray lubricant like a WD-40 and a wire brush. Depending on the age of your vehicle you may need to do this several times. The more winters a vehicle has seen the more rust and road grime that you are going to have built up inside these weld nuts. Take the 12 millimeter bolts that we are going to be using to attach the hitch to the vehicle and try to start it a few times to see how much resistance you are getting. Once you have got those thoroughly cleaned we can remove the fourth existing bolt. You may have noticed that the weld nuts at the 3/ 8 rear most attaching points have pushed up and that is because all of these weld nuts are on a single plate inside the frame when we remove that bolt that allowed it to flex back upwards. So when we go to put the hitch up it is going to be a good idea to try to attach to the forward most attaching point first. 03:25
With all of that stated we are going to put the hitch up in position. One more thing I want to note over on the passenger side is that the arm of the hitch is going to slide in between the exhaust bracket and the heat shield up into the frame. For the three forward most attaching points on the passenger side we are going to be using the 12 millimeter bolt with the lock washer however for the rear most attaching point we will be using the 12 millimeter bolt with the lock washer and the flat washer as well. Into the carriage bolts on the driver side we are going to be attaching with the flange hex nuts and now that we have got the hitch up in position and tightened down we want to go back through now and torque each one of our bolts down. You want to verify with the directions the specific torque rating for each of the bolts. Then with all of he bolts torqued down our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of Curt hitch part number 13084 on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee.

Great hitch, its the biggest one I could find for my jeep. It hangs down a little lower than I wanted, but I don't off-road enough for it be a major concern.9695

Again, this wasn't as easy for me to install since I didn't have a lift or air ratchet. Still, it was easier (and half as expensive) as having it installed by a mechanic or at a trailer rental place. The customer service is OUTSTANDING and I would highly recommend this company.29508

The hitch arrived on time. It took a little longer than expected to put on, but this was due to rusty bolts on my 2001 XJ. The process is relatively simple and straight forward. The hitch is very well made and should handle anything my Jeep can haul. 29295

this is open a 2000 cherokee sport The back hitch was great went right up and all was nice fit just don't take off the bumpier the hitch hides the nuts and make it even harder to get off and on same with the front hitch and you can't put the bottom piece on but of then that it went right up the times they have are after you take the bolts and nuts off and clean it all then you can put them in at that time I broke two in the front and one in the back I had to weld a nut on to them to get them out P.S. the wiring harness is a must have very clean instill with it no cut wires I love that28458

Removal of the old hitch was a pain, as inferior components allowed the bolts to spin in the frame. I eventually had to cut the bolts off. Installation of the new Curt receiver hitch was a breeze. I've had parts from the factory not fit as well as this did. The holes lined up. The new bolts and other components were high quality. And the "fish line" provided made getting the parts into the frame rail a breeze.25453

Hitch is well made with a very nice coating. Installed easily as advertised with no fitment issues. I've received many heavy items that were received with broken boxes and missing parts. e-trailer taped all the parts to the hitch so everything arrived despite the broken box. Smart move!20132

This is my second hitch from etrailer. Simple installs with the instructions and supplied mounting hardware. This time I got a hitch and ball mount kit and it couldn't have been any easier. The different ball mount drops fit my trailers nicely. 17511

Was very impressed at the speed of shipping. Product arrived in excellent shape. Very impressed with the quality and how well it was packed. Only complaint was the nineteen year old bolts I had to remove from vehicle to install the hitch. Instructional videos very helpful and made the paper instructions alot clearer. Will order from etrailer.com again and have recomended to others.16833

This hitch that I received is great, easy installation and the video is spot on. The shipping was insane, ordered it on Monday night and it came Friday, usually things that bulky take 2 weeks or more. I bought the complete towing package which included the two ball mounts and 1 7/8" and 2" balls, and the wiring harness also (which the video for that was awesome too). Took me about 1 hour to install the hitch and wiring harness, but did it by myself. The hardest thing about it was getting the muffler bracket bolt out, other than that it was a breeze. A word of advice that helped me was using the muffler bracket bolt to clean out the other welded nuts in the frame and a lot of WD40 (LoL). But that bolt has the unthreaded end on it and it lined up a lot easier than the supplied bolts. So in closing thanks a million eTrailer, your products are superb and your price is the best thing I liked about my purchase. Thanks again, Jason R.11749

The product is exactly as advertised. Installatio was a direct bolt-up process with no additional drilling or modifications necessary. The T-One wiring also installed quickly and easily. I was very pleased not to have to splice wires. Etrailer's customer service is to be commended. My order was shipped promptly, and I received personalized emails from the shipping department containing tracking information for the package. I ordered my hitch on Wednesday, received it on Friday, and installed it Saturday morning. I will definitely recommend Etrailer to others! Thank you for a very pleasant shopping experience.11172

I am not mechanically inclined but found the hitch receiver very easy to install. My greatest problem was breaking the bolt loose that held the tailpipe. The videos were great and I knew what I needed to do from the outset. 9416

I received the hitch very quickly and decided not to wait for a second set of hands to help me install it. I don't have access to a lift, so I just back the Jeep up onto a set of ramps, which gave me plenty of room to work. The bolt leader made the install go pretty smoothly and I just supported the hitch on a set of jack stands. Easy enough to line up the bolts. 40 minute install time might be a little misleading... I'd say give yourself a good 90 minutes just in case you run into any snags. Watching the install video was very helpful as well. I also purchased the wiring harness and that was also an easy install. Great product... fast shipping... fairly simple install... one happy customer. THANKS!9266

The trailer hitch was delivered on time and was a moderately simple to install. I had a little trouble with the spring tool stretching towards the end but that was my fault. Over all great product! I would definatly buy this again!8803

took me longer than 40 minutes This hitch is definitely a good buy because it can pull a 5000 lb trailer with 500 lb tongue weight as opposed to the competitors that can only do 3500 lb - 300 lb tongue weight. It is relatively simple to install, BUT takes quite a bit of time. It took me a LOT longer than 40 minutes. It's not that I'm new to installing something myself, but it's because I hit a few snags and I don't have the greatest tools. On the passenger side, there are 2 bolts attached to the frame that hold the muffler that are supposed to be removed to mount the hitch. Threadlock was put on these at the factory, and I do not have a pneumatic wrench thus making it a PAIN to remove them. The ONLY way I could get them off was by putting a piece of pipe over the end of my ratchet for better leverage. The other snag I hit was that as I was trying to bolt the hitch on, it was hitting the bottom edge of the bumper. So I had to undo the passenger-side bolt that holds the underside of the bumper to let the hitch go flush with the frame. In order to put that bolt back, I had to take a Dremel tool to enlarge the bolt hole in the bumper. There is a dent in my bumper which might have caused the bumper to hit the hitch. 5* Reliability - because it is the strongest hitch 5* Performance - also because it is the strongest 5* Ease of Use - how hard can a hitch be to use? 3* Installation - because of my snags mentioned 5* Cost-Benefit - it is cheaper than some of the competitors and stronger than them For some great tips, I recommend watching etrailer's install video at: http://www.etrailer.com/tv-hitch_install_1997_jeep_cherokee.aspx 3179
