Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2001 BMW X5

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2001 BMW X5

Today on this 2001 BMW X5 we are going to install part number 119190 from Tow Ready. We are also going to use part number 118151 and that is going to be the install kit. The first step is to get inside the vehicle because that is where the wiring harness is and basically what we are going to do next is remove the interior panel before we can get to the wiring itself. We are going to take out the two side panels. The first thing we are going to do is find a wire harness that actually goes directly into the tail light and there is a socket that goes into it so disconnect that, there is a little tab right in the middle. 00:35

The first thing we will do is test for the functions of the wire. We are going to do one circuit at a time. First off we will start with the running light circuit and we are going to test on the inside of the plug and we will see which color does what. It looks like it is going to be the gray and purple wire so we are going to take our running light wire from the modulite which will be brown and we are going to connect that to the wire. We will be using the quick splice to do that with and that will be part number 564. 01:05

We will move on to the next circuit. The left turn looks like a green and blue wire so the left turn for the module is going to be yellow and we will hook it up the same way we did before. Next we will look for the stop light wire. Off, on, off. It looks like the brake signal is going to be brown and black. Our stop light wire on the module is going to be red. Reinstall the wire harness back into the tail light and take the white wire and ground it to the body. Use a ring terminal to do that with. Next we will deal with the green wire and that is going to go to the right turn signal so take the green wire and route it over to the right side of the vehicle along the factory wire harness. We are looking at the passenger side and disconnect the tail light harness. Just like before we will test for the right turn signal. The right turn looks like the blue and brown wire. We can reinstall the wiring back into the tail light. Back over on the driver side of the vehicle we will hook up the black wire coming out of the modulite and basically we are going to take our wire from the 118151 kit and we are going to connect the two together and the black wire is going to be ran to the battery. Leave that wire alone for now and lets mount our module up somewhere inside the vehicle. There is a nice spot right here and they do not come with the kit but we will use a couple of cheap ones just to hold everything in place. 02:59

To get access to the battery we are going to have to remove the spare tire. Take this and roll it off to the side and now we have access to the battery. What we will do now is take the black power wire to see how much length we need to go down to the battery. We did not use much but we will cut off our excess and we will follow this a little bit like the green wire, that will be about right, and on the end of the black wire we will install the fuse holder. In one side we will add the ring terminal and the other side we will add the butt connector. Add this to the black wire and now take the ring terminal and we are going to add this to the positive side of the battery. Sneak the lead underneath the structure right here however I think we will put a notch right next to the plastic case because we will run the wires straight out that way we have easy access to the fuse if you ever change it. Now we are going to install the 15 amp fuse 118151 kit comes with a 10 amp fuse and that will be replaced with by this 15. We will take come zip ties now and zip tie the wires safe and out of the way. At this point we can reassemble the interior of the vehicle. To use the wire harness pull a little bit of it out and shut the door on it because the seal is thick enough where it will not hurt anything when you shut the lid. Just to make sure you stay away from the latch, pull out what you need to go out to your hitch. With that that will finish our install of part number 119190 and part number 118151 from Tow Ready.

I purchased this product to convert the 3 way tail light system in my Freightliner FLD 120 truck/tractor to use for my agriculture trailers that use a 2 way light system. I have several trailers I use and each of them have a lot of lights, so I needed a powered converter. I had tried using a non-powered converter first, and the hazard lights would not flash since the tail lights exceeded the maximum 2.1 amps of the converter. This product has a maximum limit of 4.2 amps and meets the amperage requirements for the conversion. I have converted my Freightliner to haul gooseneck style trailers which come wired with electric brakes and a 7 pin RV connector. I installed the converter up in the dash area of the truck connecting to the wires located there. The RV connector is not compatible with the 7 pin commercial truck wiring so you have to make some wiring changes in addition to the conversion from 3 way to 2 way. But as to this product, it works great. I needed my converter shipped overnight because of a time factor on a must have basis, and eTrailer did just what was needed and the product arrived as promised. Also eTrailer had a tech contact me personnally to answer some questions about another product I had purchased from them over 5 years ago and was most helpful on that issue. As far as my opinions go, this company is great to do business with and I would highly recommend them for your trailer and wiring needs. They know their product, believe in customer satisfaction and customer service, and can solve your trailering problems and issues. 29409

  • What Wiring Changes do I need to Make for LED Lights on My Trailer
  • Because LED running lights use much less power than their incandescent counterparts, you should not be in any danger of overloading anything. Because of that, and because your truck already has the 4 pole connector, you do not need a converter. Your signal is already converted. You can certainly use a 4 to 6 pole adapter, part # 37175 or a 4 to 7 pole adapter, part # 37185. The powered accessory lead would use the black wire on the 7 way adapter and the blue wire on the 6 way. You would run that

  • How to Wire the 2009 VW Jetta with a Trailer Towing Wire Kit
  • Yes, the 2009 VW Jetta has a alternate wiring system called multiplexed, which means that multiple signals on each side of the vehicle are carried on one wire. The part # 119190, Heavy Duty ModuLite with Circuit Protection, is the correct harness but you will need to wire the converter differently on your vehicle. We have a Tech Bulletin (see link) that you can review to help also. On the drivers side behind the taillight you will need to find the wire that has multiple functions, with a circ

  • What Parts are Needed to Convert a Toyota Tundra with a 4-Way Connector to a 5-Way Connector
  • If the 4-Way flat came on the truck from the Toyota factory, there would be no need to buy an Upgraded HD Modulite harness like part # 119190. The truck would have all the necessary electrical components in place. You would just need a 4-Way to 5-Way adapter like part # 20036. The blue wire is then connected to the reverse light wire on the truck if the trailer uses the blue wire for reverse lights. Occasionally the blue wire can be used for trailer brakes on a trailer. You could then use bra

  • Wiring a 2007 VW Eos 3.2 with Multiplexed Wiring for Towing a Trailer
  • The 2007 Volkswagen Eos has a Multiplexed wiring system that requires wiring the Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness, item # 119190, for a trailer connector. There are 3 ways of wiring depending on how your vehicle is wired from the factory. In the instructions, at step 9 (see link), it explains that you may have a two wire system that requires the red stop wire to be grounded along with the white wire. If you have the 3 wire system (most likely) with amber turn

  • Hitch, Wiring, Brake Controller, and Accessories for a 2010 Toyota Tacoma
  • For your 2010 Toyota Tacoma and hitch, # 13323, the hitch comes with everything you need to install it. Depending on what you want to tow or carry there are some basic accessories that you will need. A draw bar is a good idea if you plan on towing a trailer that has a coupler. Ball Mount, # 2923 will fit in the recommended hitch. Use with hitch ball, # 19247. I also recommend a locking hitch pin, which will deter theft, like the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # 7683. You will also need wiring.

  • Using Heavy Duty Modulite, Part # 119190 on 2008 Toyota Rav 4
  • If you do not care to use the Tow Ready Harness, part # 118412 that plugs in to the connectors behind the taillight assemblies, you can certainly use the Heavy Duty Modulite Wiring Harness, part # 119190. The Heavy Duty Modulite Wiring Harness is not vehicle specific. To make the required connection to the positive battery terminal, I would also recommend the Modulite Installation Kit, part # 118151. To locate the correct circuits behind the taillight assemblies to tap the modulite into, you
