Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2000 Kia Sportage

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2000 Kia Sportage

Today we are going to be installing wiring harness part number 118371 on a 2000 Kia Sportage. All right, we are inside the rear of the vehicle here, and we are going to go ahead and locate the plug-ins for the wiring harness. As you can see, looking at the drivers side, we have got this compartment, and the wiring harness is actually located directly behind there on both sides of the vehicle. We can go ahead and remove the door cover. And, as you can see, the wiring harness is connected to the back of the tail light assembly here. So what we can do is go ahead and unplug it. There is a little push button here right at the bottom and it pulls straight out.

On our wiring harness, as you can see we have got two plugs. One is going to plug into the connector, and the other side is going to connect directly into the back of the tail light housing. And we want the connector with the yellow wire in it to connect to the drivers side. And the one with the green wire will go over to the passengers side. You can see we have got our grounding point here on the harness. We need to find a suitable grounding spot and attach that. We will probably going to just use the self-tapping screw that was provided in the installation kit, and just screw that right there.

In order to get the wiring harness for the passengers side over to the passengers side we are going to need to actually pull back the paneling here and remove this rear threshold piece, and then undo the paneling here, and route it, and make our connection back here. The next thing I am going to do is go ahead and mount my ground and then pull back all of my paneling so that I can route my wire across. And to pull back the panel, we want to remove the Phillips head screw here on the side. And we can just take a basic flathead screwdriver and it behind the panel. And in order to get the panel back we are also going to need to remove this rear threshold piece. We need to pop the little plugs out. And we can just lift that up and set it out of the way for the time being. And we can go back - and again, that makes things a lot easier - pull the panel back. We are going to go ahead and take our connector with the green and the red wires and route it directly behind the panel. Pull that through. And we want to go back, and you can see there is a little black box, which is our converter box, and that is going to need to be mounted inside this compartment here. There is double-sided tape. We can actually peel the cover back and tape it to the back side of the wall here there is a nice, flat surface for us to connect to.

The 4-pole itself, you can either leave it inside this compartment and then just pull it out when needed, or you can actually take it and route it under the panel, pull it out this way, and leave it stored out here. And then again on the passengers side, I am just going to remove the cover and remove the Phillips head screw on the side panel, and route our harness behind the panel. I am actually going to go ahead and hide the wire behind the carpeting. And with the carpeting pulled back, you can see there is an existing wiring harness here. We can actually go ahead and take some of the zip-ties that are provided in the wiring harness kit and zip-tie the wire directly to it. You can see we have got quite a bit of leftover wire running over to the passengers side. I am going to go ahead and just take another zip-tie and zip-tie that up. And then we can just go ahead and reassemble the interior. This will conclude the installation of wiring harness part number 118371on a 2000 Kia Sportage.
