Video of Yakima Q Tower Roof Rack Installation - 2007 Toyota Prius
Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer
installation instructions and specs for complete information.
Today we are going to be installing a Yakima roof rack on a 2007 Toyota Prius. We will be using 58 inch crossbars part number Y00409 and a set of Q-towers part number Y00124. We will also be using Q-clips designed to specifically fit our car. We will be using Q-clip Q124 and that is part number Y00724 and Q-clip number Q5. That is part number Y00605. These are our Q-clip sets. A Q-clip set will contain two metal brackets and two rubber patches. These rubber patches are designed to fit the contours of your vehicle and will snap into the bottom of our Q-tower. The Q-clips are contoured to fit the shape of your vehicle inside the door frame. We will be using the Q5 clips up front and the Q124 clips in the rear. 0:56
These are the Q-towers. These form the base for our roof rack. On the bottom, you can see where our rubber patches are going to attach. The crossbars themselves will fit through the top of our Q-tower. Included with the Q-tower are these core plugs. These will take the space of the optional lock cores on our Q-tower. You can add a set of Yakima lock cores so that you can secure the roof rack to the vehicle. These are the ends caps that we are going to snap into the ends of our crossbars. And finally, these are the crossbars themselves. They are a traditional round Yakima style crossbar and they will allow you to use virtually any roof rack accessory designed for round crossbars. 1:33
The first step is preparing our Q-tower. We are going to take the rubber pad from our Q5 clip and attach it to the bottom of our Q-tower. They simply press into place. Next we are going to attach our Q-towers to our crossbar. We will pull open this door here on the side so that we can access our tightening bolt. This is what will allow us to clamp down to our crossbar. We will slip the crossbar through our Q-tower and we will take the included Allen key and snug this bolt down. We do not need to lock anything down yet because we are going to have to adjust the position to make sure we have the right span. Then we will come over to the other end and do the same with the other Q-tower. 2:12
Next what we need to do is check the measurement from one Q-tower to the other. On this installation with our Prius we need to be at 42-1/2 inches from here to here. We will go ahead and pop our crossbar caps in now that we have our measurement set. Next we are going to take our Q-clips and fit them inside the tower. They just fit in the slots on the side of the clamp bracket. Then we will take our core holder and push it in place from the back. And we will push the retaining clips in to hold the core holder in place. We will do the same for the other side. Next we are ready to head to the car. First we will open the door on both the driver and passenger side and then we will lift our crossbar assembly into place. Next we will check our instructions for our measurements. We need to be 10 inches from the edge of the windshield to the leading edge of our Q-tower. Right now, we are at about 7-1/2 inches so we need to move back just a little bit. 3:10
We now have our Q-towers set 10 inches back from our windshield. Next we are going to come to our clips and use this adjusting screw to tighten them up. You want there to be a little bit of tension when you go to lock down the Q-towers on either side. You should not have to force it or put a lot of weight into it to get it to seat. In the rear, the spread between the Q-towers along the crossbar needs to be 40 inches. For the rear crossbar, we need to make sure our spread is 30 inches center on center. So we are going to measure from the center of the first crossbar to the center of the rear and we are right at 30 inches, where we need to be. And that does it for the Yakima roof rack installation on our 2007 Toyota Prius.
