Shhhhhhhhhhh.

Thule's AeroBlade bars are designed to be among the quietest, strongest, most aerodynamic load bars on the road. The low-profile, arced shape of the bars couples with the unique WindDiffuser stripping to produce a bar that is so quiet you'll forget you even have a rack on your car. Many factory and aftermarket roof racks produce an annoying whistle that can only be quelled by adding a fairing to your system. Not only is a fairing unnecessary with the AeroBlade, but adding one would actually make it louder and less aerodynamic.

Wind diffusing top strip

WindDiffuser Technology

A built-in T-track sits along the top of each bar, near the front. When no accessories are mounted, the included WindDiffuser rubber stripping covers the slot. (You can also cut the stripping so that it can be placed in the slot around any carriers or accessories that are mounted.) The rubber strip serves to keep dirt and grime out of the T-slot and provides a little scratch-resistant cushion for any mounted items.

The unique aspect of the WindDiffuser, which comes standard with the AeroBlade, is the ribbing. This textured surface disturbs the air flowing over the bar, tripping it to create turbulence. The result is less wind noise, little or no annoying whistle, and a more aerodynamic rack. In fact, the AeroBlade has been shown to produce 90 percent less sound energy than the elliptical Thule Aero bars, making them the quietest load bars in the industry.

Aerodynamic Design

Thule took a note from the manufacturers of high-performance cars, such as Ferrari and Maserati, and designed the AeroBlade with a Kammback (or Kamm-tail) style. This crossbar does not have a full-length teardrop-type tail; rather, it is cut off, leaving a square end at the rear of the bar. The aerodynamic effect is essentially the same as it would be if the bar continued into a full teardrop shape. Air continues to move over it in a streamlined fashion, flowing along the bar as it would if the tail were complete. Because there is no tail, though, the bar is smaller and weighs less.

Strong, Durable Construction

Extruded aluminum construction

The Thule AeroBlade load bars are constructed of extruded aluminum to ensure an extra-sturdy roof-rack system. During the extrusion process, metal is shaped to form a complex design on the interior of each bar, as seen in the cross section of the AeroBlade. Each fold adds to the overall strength and rigidity of the bar. This process creates crossbars that are primarily hollow but still reinforced for added strength. The result is a bar that can withstand more than 800 pounds of force, yet weighs so little that it takes up only a slight portion of your load capacity.

Installation of Thule AeroBlade Crossbars

To install your crossbars, use the included SmartSlide measurement system. This molded material lines the bottom slots of each bar and is scored and numbered to directly correspond with the instructions included in your custom mounting kit. By covering the bottom slots, around the feet, the SmartSlide manages to further reduce noise and eliminate whistlingas well.

SwingBlade Endcaps

Swing Blade end cap animation

Mounting accessories on your roof-rack crossbars has never been easier. With the AeroBlade you can slide accessories into the T-slots without having to wrestle off an endcap. Just pop the SwingBlade up and swing it out for instant access to the top slot.

Video Transcript for Thule AeroBlade Crossbar Review

Today we are going to take a look at the Thule AeroBlade crossbar. The AeroBlade is available in 4 lengths, 43 inches, 47 inches, 53 inches and 60 inches. The AeroBlade is Thules quietest, strongest loadbar. On a vertical load test it can sustain over 800 pounds of force. It also managed to decrease the drag force by 55 when compared to the Thule Rapid Aero cross bar. On the top is a rubber wind diffuser that sits inside the T-slot. The wind diffuser helps control the air flow to keep noise down. It produces 13 decibels less noise than the previous Thule Rapid Aero bar. The slight bow in the center of each bar helps to ensure a sturdy, custom fit roof rack. Like the Rapid Aero bar the AeroBlade has a T-slot for attaching accessories. What is different about this system is the end cap. The end cap does not need to be removed in order to mount or remove accessories. It will swing up and out of the way to allow access to the T-Slot. Once you have installed or removed whatever accessories you need in the T-slot, close the end cap and your ready to go.

The underside of the bar is a measurement slide. You dont have to measure anymore, just follow the slide and the instruction. Adjust the slide to whatever measurement you need for your particular setup. Thule also includes rubber stripping to fill in the gap and help keep noise down on the underside of the cross bar. The AeroBlade bars are also designed to fit all of the current Rapid Foot Packs. It will fit the Rapid Crossroads feet part number TH450R, Rapid Aero Feet TH400XTR, Rapid Tracker feet part number TH430R, the Rapid Traverse part number TH480R and the Rapid Podium part number TH460R.

Next we will show you how to set up the Thule AeroBlade bar to install on your vehicle. We will flip the bar over and remove the end caps from each side. We will take our foot and slide it into the track on the underside. You can check the fit instructions to figure out where you need to get the measurement slider to get the foot in the correct position. Once we have our foot in place we can go ahead and reinstall our end cap. We will repeat the same proceedure on the other 3 feet and then we will be ready to install it on our vehicle. Now we are ready to go ahead and mount them on our vehicle.

We will position our crossbars on top of our vehicle. First we want to make sure the overhang of the crossbars is even from side to side. Then we will make sure we have them set at the same spot on either side of the vehicle so that the bars are running perpendicular to our factory raised side rails. Once we have our crossbars into place we can go ahead and begin tightening it down. The Rapid Crossroad feet use a rubber coated steel band that wraps around our factory side rails. As we tighten the foot down the foot locks onto our side rails and it also secures the AeroBlade bar into place. We will move back and forth from the drivers side to the passenger side as we tighten down to make sure the crossbar tighten downs evenly. Once we have the front crossbar in position we can go ahead and install our rear crossbar. We will place the rear bar into position and then like the front we will check to make sure the overhang on either side is even and we will also measure from the center of our front bar to the center of the rear bar to make sure the bar runs perpendicular to the side rails and it runs parallel with the front bar. Once we have the crossbar into position we will go ahead and use the same tightening procedure we used with the front bar.

For this application Thule recommends the 43 inch long AeroBlade bars you can use bars that are longer if you need to carry more, but keep in mind the general rule of thumb is not to exceed the width of your side view mirrors. Now that we have our AeroBlade roof rack installed we are ready to take it out for a test drive. And that does it for the Thule AeroBlades.

BMW X3

Roof rack and bike fork mount carrier for BMW x3. Etrailer was exceptionally quick and accurate processing the order and keeping me informed of status. Web site was helpful ensuring I had the right parts for this car. Delivery better than expected--UPS also delivered to ensure product was not tampered with and so informed eTrailer who informed me. Very good keeping the customer informed. I've installed Thule and Yakima racks before on other vehicles. The secret is be patient and follow the instructions the best you can. The aero bars are superb. Definitely reduce wind noise. Otherwise, the installation was pretty straightforward. Looks good on the vehicle too. Quite plaseased so far with this purchase. Excellent price, customer service etc. Well done eTrailer. 29312

Sleek! I love the rubber inserts, as they provide enough anti-slip to let me secure my belongings without the need of a cradle-like add-on. The bars, empty, are noisier at 50mph than I had expected, though it's easy to get used to. I will make sure all seals are properly covered with the provided materials. 27088

Im a 60 yr old woman that just bought a 2014 Mini Cooper Countryman S. Will thiss: Thule AeroBlade Load Bars - Aluminum - 47 fit into the rails that came with the vehicle? Do you think the instructions are easy enough for me to attach the crossbars by myself?

There are a couple Thule AeroBlade kits that will work for your Mini Countryman S. I have linked to all the options that we have below. If you're comfortable with hand tools, particularly Allen wrenches, you should be good to go on the install. Of course if you run into trouble, we'll be more than happy to help.

2012 Toyota 4Runner

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

The 60 inch Thule AeroBlades, or as I like to call them - The Adventure Makers - have been a great addition to my 2012 4Runner. My family enjoys outdoor activities such as biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking and skiing. The longer bars let us take all the gear for our adventures. It also gets everything out of the car so we are not constantly climbing over and digging through stuff. Makes for a much easier drive. When the rack is not in use it is quiet, which is awesome, because car noise drives me crazy. I have tried round and square bars and could not handle the highway noise on long drives. Some people think the 60 inch bars are too much, but if we have to choose between biking and paddling, we choose both! The long bars makes it so I can take everything needed for proper adventure making fun. Happy family, happy me. 96583

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

The cross bars are good, and hold everything snug, but don't seem as sturdy as the square tube bars. They look nicer. Combined with the Thule Roof Mounted Railing Foot Pack - TH450R, I found it fairly difficult to get the bars centered on the roof (Subaru Imprezza) properly. The front bar (47" bars) needs to be moved back or it won't fit. It took a lot of fiddling to get right, and because of the design it will take a lot of fiddling every time, unlike the older design I have on my other car. The biggest downside is that makes it more time consuming to remove and put the bars back on. On my old Thule system the feet connected permanently to the roof rail, and the top part of each foot snapped into place, making it super easy and quick to remove and reattach the bars. I still have that on my old car. Looks worn and plastic parts are kind of shot, but it still works great. I'm not so sure this newer one will be in as good shape in 11 years, which is how long I've had the old system. 201866

Comments

The bars are still working well, but there are two issues. First, the end caps pop out fairly easily, and Ive already lost one. Doesnt really affect functionality, but it looks bad and now theres an opening on the end of the rail. Second, the system for connecting them to the roof rack is *much* more fiddle-y than the square bar type with the footer attachment. Those just pop on and off, easy peasy. I still have an ancient one on my mini van, and it works great even after years of abuse. This type of connector with the rubber strap does work, but on my Imprezza the placement has to be exact, and that means going back and forth tightening one side, then the other, then loosen one side because its a little off, etc. It takes a while to get right. For the price I expected better. That said, I use it a lot for kayaks and bikes.

Follow correct assembly and you will have no issues! Unfortunately, that was not me and I learned by trial. Was it all my fault? Well some of it was, but the instructions at times were not as clear. For example, it was unclear where to measure 10 inches back (side or center) from my windshield as to how far the bars should sit. At first I measure from the center, but that was clearly incorrect as I reviewed videos on line of the bars being measured from the side. Then I heard howling and whistling and thought, hmmm, maybe I should install the rubber into the top and underside, even in the sliders -that did the trick! The instructions were not clear that I had to do that either. So, live and learn. Bottom line: if I went on-line and viewed videos of the installation first, I would have gotten it right the first time. I suggest you do! As per the quality of the item. It is truly top notch, light and sturdy and I am extremely pleased with my purchase! 61755

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

These aeroblade load bars are the first set of roof racks I've owned. I was worried about noise and gas mileage after reading other reviews but was surprised that they don't seem to make any noise at all and have not really affected my gas mileage. The silver and black of the bars and feet look good because my flex is black with a silver roof. The only thing to keep in mind when buying these, and I knew this ahead of time, is that the bars have an odd "tear drop" shape to make them aerodynamic which makes attaching other accessories difficult. My thule sidearm bike carrier fit on the bars but the clamps aren't able to "hug" the bars snuggly like you would like them to...but the carrier never moved once all the screws were tightened so its not a big deal. All-in-all I'm happy with the bars. 96148

Love my new Thule rack system! I went with the AeroBlade load bars and Circuit Bike Racks with fork mounts. I was a little concerned about the potential for wind noise at high speed... and while you can hear some noise, it is not as significant as I had anticipated. All considered, the system looks great, installed easily and is functioning well. Very happy with the products! E-Trailer was great on follow through with the order... only down side was that I had to wait a few extra days for an out-of-stock part to arrive before the order was complete to ship. 192692

There's a reason that Thule products are a little more. It's because they are very high quality. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for and I know that these cross bars will last a VERY long time. If you are OK with spending a little more for your roof rack, I highly recommend getting these. As far as ride noise goes, I had purchased ROLA crossbars a few years ago from etrailer.com and they were very loud in comparison. I have a panoramic roof and even with these bars on with two kayaks road noise isn't bad. 240447

Great looking product. Fits very well on the car and the bars are actually pretty quiet. It is somewhat a pain to mount and dismount so plan on 30-45 minutes at least. In my opinion, if you put them on leave them there for the season as it is not very friendly to mount or dismount. 181708

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

This is my first Thule roof rack. Very happy with the product, including ease of installation. The aeroblade bars are very quiet. I haven't noticed them yet. Also very happy with the overall shopping experience with etrailer.com. In addition to their prices being some of the lowest I could find for this product, the delivery of the product was very timely, and their communication via emails was outstanding. I will definitely be purchasing more products from etrailer.com 41363

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

Product arrived as specified. Manufacturer assembly instructions are not the easiest to follow. Used the rack this past weekend and everything worked excellent. These bars barely make any additional wind noise even at 70 mph. 35252

Review from a similar Roof Rack AeroBlade in Roof Rack

Good product. It is functional, fairly easy to assemble (although the directions are crap. Pictures, no description), and it looks good. It came at a good price also. But what I really liked was the person I spoke to. I needed it quickly and was quite doubtful about their ability to deliver on time. Three days and it was on the porch. I appreciate a company that follows through on their committment. I'd buy from them again. 95770

  • Will Yakima Skyboxes and the ForkLift Bike Rack Fit on Thule AeroBlade Load Bars
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Yakima ForkLift Bike Rack, # Y02098, and the mounting hardware used by a SkyBox, # Y90135. I did a test fit on a Thule AeroBlade Load Bar. I am happy to report that everything fit. The ForkLift and SkyBox both have mounting hardware that has enough adjustability to fit on the new AeroBlade Bars. I made a short video demonstrating the fit.

  • Recommended Roof Rack And Cargo Carrier For 2014 Santa Fe With Panoramic Roof
  • For your 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe with the panoramic sunroof, you will want to consult your owners manual or with the dealership to find what the roof weight capacity is for your vehicle. Please keep in mind the weight of any racks, and cargo carriers as well as the cargo would need to be considered when dealing with the roof weight capacity. I recommend the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Roof Rack by Thule. There are three numbers that make up the roof rack system for your vehicle. The Thule AeroBlade

  • Distance Between Thule Roof Rack Crossbars And Roof On 2014 Audi Q7
  • The distance between the crossbars on your 2014 Audi Q7 may vary depending on the type roof rack you install and the height of the side rails on your vehicle. I spoke with my contact at Thule and they told me that the height of the # TH460R that is included in the system you referenced is 1-1/2 to 2 inches. This would not include the height of the crossbars that fit the feet. We have another roof rack option for you. It is the Thule AeroBlade Edge Roof Rack. The height of this foot

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen with Sunroof
  • Roof Rack manufacturers do not typically test their roof racks for sunroof interference, but after doing a little research on the sunroof on the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen, I recommend choosing a roof rack that sits above the factory side rails. When the sunroof is retracted, it comes pretty close to the same height as the side rails. The roof rack I recommend is the Thule AeroBlade Crossroad Roof Rack. This roof rack consists of the Thule AeroBlade Load Bars, # THARB47, and the

  • Comparing Thule AeroBlade Roof Rack and Rhino Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack for 2011 Subaru Forester
  • I went out to our test fit bays to measure the height of the Thule Rapid Crossroad Roof Mounted Railing Foot Pack # TH450R and the Rhino-Rack SX Series Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRSX005 for you. The Rhino Rack system # RRVA118S-2, # RRSX005 will give you a lower profile for your vehicle by approximately 1/2 inch. I found that the Rapid Crossroad # TH450R will sit 1.48 inches above the raised side rail on your 2011 Subaru Forester, with the load bar adding 1-1/8 inches. The SX

  • Can the Thule Roof Tracks and Tracker Roof Rack Be Used on a New Toyota Prius C
  • The Thule Roof Tracks, # THTP42, can be installed on any vehicle as long as there is enough room on the roof to install the tracks and they will work with the foot base, # 753-2149, that you currently have. As long as you have the tracker feet and the appropriate crossbars, you can use this set up on your new Toyota Prius C. At this time there are no roof racks that were specifically designed for the new Prius C, so adding the roof tracks is going to be the only option, unless your

  • Difference Between the Roof Rack Spread on the Thule AeroBlades and Yakima Roof Rack System
  • The different manufacturers do specify different crossbar spreads. A wider crossbar spread is preferred, since it distributes the weight of the cargo more evenly, and supplies a wider base for roof rack cargo accessories to attach to. You are correct, in that you will have to check the fit of the specific accessories that will be used on the roof rack. Many roof mounted cargo accessories (like bike racks and cargo boxes) require a specific crossbar spread to mount and support the weight

  • Correcting Wind Noise on 2015 Subaru Forester with Thule AeroBlade Crossroads Roof Rack
  • I spoke with my contact at Thule and you are correct, the smaller strips that you speak of should fill in the exposed gap on the underside of the crossbar. As for the black caps, please feel free to email me a picture of them so we can determine their function. I have also attached a video for you to check out.

  • Cargo Basket Recommendation For 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited With Panoramic Roof
  • There are a couple of measurements you can take on your 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. First, you will want to measure the crossbars themselves to make sure any basket you select will fit the style and size you have. The next important measurement is the distance center-to-center.
