Secure, 2-Piece, Serrated Jaw

Serrated Jaw of the Reese R20

The dual-jaw system on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch ensures full 360-degree contact around your trailer's king pin for a strong, reliable connection. Unlike traditional spring-loaded, dual-jaw systems, the R20 features serrated jaws for maximum security. The geared teeth ensure that every time you use this hitch, the jaws will close evenly to form a perfect circle around your trailer's king pin, providing a consistently tight connection. By surrounding the king pin entirely - with direct jaw-to-king-pin contact - the R20 allows far less movement in the hitch than other fifth-wheel hitches, resulting in minimal jarring and chucking.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Vibration Dampener of the Reese R20

The R20 offers several unique features that help to create a smooth, quiet fifth-wheel towing experience. Aside from the two-piece jaw that offers a firm and secure connection, stability is also increased by having wide-stance, arched legs and a pivot beam with a wide front-to-back mounting configuration. The pivot beam also has a built-in, heavy-duty vibration-isolator system that dampens both vertical and longitudinal vibration, the result of which is less noise and a better ride.

Locking Handle and King Pin Indicator

The R20 features an easy-to-use locking handle with a built-in visual indicator to ensure proper hookup. When the trailer's king pin is in position within the jaws of the hitch, a green indicator button is visible on the back of the fifth-wheel head. This button can be easily seen from the cab of your truck.

Strength and Durability

The R20 was designed with strength and durability in mind. Sturdy steel and various hardened, cast components make up this fifth-wheel trailer hitch that, despite its weight rating, offers commercial-grade towing strength. Extensive testing demonstrated that the R20 is compliant with the criteria (SAE J2638) set forth by the Society of Automotive Engineers for fifth-wheel trailer hitch performance. In addition, this fifth-wheel trailer hitch passed 900,000 cycles in both fatigue and static testing, attesting to its durability.

To increase the lasting effectiveness of your hitch, Reese has included a custom-fit lube plate with the R20. This lube plate provides a smooth surface to help the king pin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. It also helps to prevent scratches on the R20's top plate. Grease pockets are integrated into the R20 fifth-wheel trailer hitch so that you can easily maintain the effectiveness of the lube plate.

Note: Lube plate can be removed to fit some applications.

Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel RP30867 Review

Today were going to review part number rp30867. This is the Reese R20 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the fixed legs. This is a 20,000 pound weight capacity hitch. This fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. As you can see right here, has the cast dual-jaw system, which will provide more jaw-to-king-pin contact than your traditional dual-jaw hitches. The geared teeth right down here will ensure even, secure closure for full 360-degree contact.

The secure connection means minimal jarring and chucking. It has a nine-inch wide, two-point European-style funnel, which makes it simple to guide the king pin into the hitch. And it will work great even if trailer or the tow vehicle are not in a straight line. The four-way pivoting head will ease hookup, and even on unlevel ground has a five-Degree side-to-side pivot and it pivots front-to-back also. Single-piece legs with the wide stance provide excellent stability.

The head is held onto the crossmember by a single cast pivot beam. Has the heavy-duty vibration dampeners which will minimize rattle and noise even on rough terrain. Ill just show you those dampeners, turn it to the side here. If I raise the head, youll be able to see the hard yellow rubber, which is a dampener. Theres one on this side, one on this side.

And on the very back Ill show you. You should be able to see right here, the yellow, thats the dampener, and over here on the other side is the dampener also. So you got one here, one over here, one here, and one here. Thatll help minimize rattle and noise even on rough terrain. I also want to show you on the side, you can adjust the hitch height.

If you look here on the side the crossmember has four sets of holes that you can bolt onto the fixed legs. Right now, I have it in the lowest position, which would be 14 inches above the truck bed. If you go to the very bottom one, which would raise it 18 inches above the truck bed. Also, the holes on the fixed legs are elongated, so there is a play of you can move this crossmember one inch front or rear to help gain any cab clearance. This hitch is compatible with slider or Sidewinders if additional clearance is needed. The lockable handle, let me show you on this side. Right here youll see the handle right now is in the lock position. See, its color-coded. The green pointing down means its locked. If you pull it up, the red going up is unlocked. Thatll allow you to open up the hitch. As you can see right there, now the dual-jaws are open. When the king pin slides in, theres a green tab right in there that that king pin will push in on that green tab. When the jaws go around the king pin, you can turn the handle down and theres a hole here you can put a pin and lock through or pin and clip, or you can even put a padlock through there. Padlock would be sold separately for additional security. On the very back, I was mentioning that green pin in the head there when that is pushed all the way. When that king pin slides in and pushes that green tab, as you can see it will actually pop out this indicator on the back of the hitch, and thats what youll be able to see from the rear window of your truck cab. When the screen is popped out, that means that your king pin is fully installed into the hitch head, so that visible indicator will let you determine whether its fully engaged or not. This hitch is a sturdy, powder coated steel which is corrosion resistant. Now for demonstration purposes, I do have it mounted on rails and brackets, but the base rails and installation kit are sold separately. It will work with industry-standard, above-bed rails made by Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Pro Series, Reese, and Valley, and you can simplify installation with a vehicle-specific bracket kit. Gross towing weight on this is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit is 5,000 pounds. I mentioned the hitch height can go anywhere from 14 to 18 inches, has a limited lifetime warrantee, and one last little feature. If youll notice, it has a black plastic lube plate already installed on the head. Nice thing about that is it will give you the protection of the head from getting scratched. It will also help when the king pin is sliding into attach, it helps the fifth wheel slide easily. Also, there are little pockets right here that you should be able to see on here and those are grease pockets. You can put grease on there and they will settle in there and give you good lubrication on the hitch head. That should do it for review on part number rp30867.

2009 Dodge Ram 2500

I bought this hitch and the 50140-58 custom rail kit for my 2009 Dodge 2500 Quad with a short bed. I had read several reviews that stated how "quiet" the hitch is because of the rubber isolation dampeners at the pivot points. I had also read how easy it is to "hookup". Yes and yes! While the R16 would have been plenty sufficient for my needs, the R20 includes the lube plate (form fitted to the fifth wheel) that is a $50 item that you must purchase extra for the R16. And, by specification, the R20 gives you 25% more capacity...for about $75. While the entire assembly is pretty heavy, it is very easily disassembled into three manageable pieces by removing three linchpins. We just completed a 6000 mile journey and did have one "problem"; the vibration isolators for fore and aft motion of the head (the fifth wheel) on the cross member (the blue piece) were not holding up even though my trailer's weight was 13K with a 2.5K pin weight...the yellow rubber material seemed too soft. Etrailer jumped right on it, when I contacted them. They put me in touch with Reese, who next-dayed the "orange" replacements (part #58516) to me along my route, at no cost, of course. When things go perfectly you will always be happy with a company and their products, but what they do in a "crisis" is what makes the difference. Etrailer and Reese are #1 in this regard! 130978

Ram

This hitch is heavy duty. Cast metal instead of stamped on most other hitches. Love that it came with a custom lube plate. Pulled with no noise or chucking like my older single straight barl hitch. I have a Sidewinder pin box and it works great with it even on my super short bed on a Ram Megacab. 277446

2011 GMC Duramax

I just finished mounting the Reese R20 in my 2011 GMC Duamax as seen in the attached photo. I found the instructions and drawings to be very good. The installation was straight forward. This hitch replaced an older (1990) hitch which did not have side to side articulation. I am looking forward to the additional flexibility when unhitching and hitching on uneven ground. Thanks for the reference page, particularly the installation video. It was a pleasure doing business with etrailer. 112010

Installed easily. I let my son-in-law do the lifting! Arrived fast and undamaged. Far superior to the 15K Pro series I had. It was junk after 2 and a half years. This makes NO noise when pulling my 38 foot 5th wheel. 208600

Its been a year now. I bought this hitch half way through a 8000 mile 105 night trip because my previous slide gate hitch failed. The Reese has never let me down. Were out at least a week every month. Should of bought this the first time around!

I recently purchased a new to me GMC 2008 3500. It already had a 5th wheel hitch which made all kinds of noise and was a pain to hook up and unhook. My earlier truck had a Reese 18K Signature hitch which I did like so I figured I would go back with a Reese hitch. I ordered this hitch and as always it showed up in a few days from E trailer! It drop right in the rails in the bed. Very simple to use, no funny noises from the hitch. Connecting and I connecting could not be simpler. It's the best fifth wheel hitch I have ever used!! 262505

Product was delivered on time. The boxes that the three (3) parts came in were hammered and one of the parts bags was subsequently opened - fortunately, the parts were kept in the box - UPS did a wonderful job of taping the box. It would seem that you all would put a bit more effort into designing a system that better handles these bulky/heavy pieces for shipment. Overall, easy to install (thanks to the video) - about 3-4 hours and I am ready to hook up my 5th wheel. 205946

Once the trailer is locked in this hitch is GREAT , But I have found it difficult to fully lock the handle together without rocking the truck back and forth. It is also difficult to unlock the handle when its time to unhook the from the trailer, further more once the handle has unlocked and has been pulled out, the handle tends to slide back into the hitch thus not releasing the trailer. I have to have someone hold the handle out as I pull my truck forward. 266270

I am looking at a 20K 30867. Will that fit the same bed rails as a 16K 30866 and are they interchangeable from one to the other?I cannot find any information of the distance between the bracket that goes into the rail.Thank you!Dennis J. Kraus South Dakota

Both the R16 and R20 fifth wheel hitches will fit the same rail set. For the most part, above-bed fifth wheel rails are the same. If you have a truck with a set of rails and currently have the R16 part # 30866, you can pull it out of the rails and drop the R20 30867 right in.

Ordered on Sunday, received on Wednesday, pulling a new fifth wheel toyhauler on Friday. Fantastic hitch at a great price, super fast shipping, etrailer is the best. As with anything that includes instructions, they could have been better. Pretty simple to figure out though. This hitch is top notch, made pulling a 16K pound trailer a breeze with our F350. 253407

2015 Chevy Silverado 2500

Review from a similar Fifth Wheel R20 in Fifth Wheel

I really appreciated the very informative videos etrailer provided for the install on my 2015 Silverado 2500. I was able to focus my efforts on the high degree of manual dexterity required to mount the rails to my truck without the assistance of a lift. It was a very rewarding experience and I was shocked to learn the positions I could get my aging body into under that truck. Couple of Tips from me to the next guy: 1) Use electrical tape on lead wire coil and bolt. Too nerve racking pulling on that wire and hoping it wasn't going to yank free of the bolt. 2) When you go to install the washer, lockwasher, nut combination, put a piece of duct tape over the hole in the top of the frame. When (not if) you drop the nut it will bounce off the tape rather than making the nothing but net swishing sound on it's way into your truck frame. Really solid hitch. I'm very satisfied with the purchase. 214651

Review from a similar Fifth Wheel R20 in Fifth Wheel

I can't review this product as excellent yet since I haven't towed with it. But, product arrived when expected and despite the box being torn up, everything was there and in good condition. I might add that the unit is shipped in two boxes and the box with the head unit in it was the one that was torn up. It was shipped out exactly as Reese boxed it. On the other hand, etrailer box up the slider unit in another box and it arrived in perfect condition. Installation was fairly simple with some minor problems. One of the bolt on legs on the slider unit was on a slight angle and I had to hammer it to a more straight alignment to get it to go into my rails. Also, the pins to attach the slide unit to the rails were in the box with the head. I spent about 10 minutes going through everything to find my "missing parts". Finally, it is stated in the instructions, but took me a minute to find this--you cannot install this head on this slider unit in the lowest bolt position. I also measured the distance from my truck bed and at the 2nd lowest position (the lowest I can get with this combo unit) it sits 18" above my truck bed. The literature states the head can adjust from 14" to 18" above the truck bed. In my case, it would be 18" at the lowest and 20" at the highest. Until I hook up my rig, I won't know how this will affect the trailer level. My old hitch head was about 16.5" above the bed, so this is an increase of 1.5 inches and I have no way to make it any lower. The quality of this unit is impressive right from the unboxing. Instructions are fairly well laid out and easy to understand, but you need to make sure you read everything closely. My only gripe was that they had pictures of all the parts to help you identify them, but for some reason they had no picture of the "roller pin" that attaches the two pieces of the slide handle together or clear instructions on how to insert it. But, I eventually figured it out. From unboxing to fully installed was about 1 hour. I was able to do the entire install by myself except for lifting the head unit onto the slider. I could have done it, but it wouldn't have been smart, considering it weighs 130 pounds. Alternately, you could remove the actual head from the pivot and install them separately, so it could be done with one person. I can't wait to try out the hitch with my trailer, but considering all of the frustrations I have been having with my old Husky unit, this should feel like the Cadillac of hitches to me. One final note. I spoke with the reps at etrailer two different times. Both of the people I talked to were extremely helpful and a pleasure to work with, especially Vince, who also had great follow up with me. I would definitely do business with them in the future. 175124

Review from a similar Fifth Wheel R20 in Fifth Wheel

First I should say I LOVE etrailer.com and the customer service. I originally purchased a Curt Q20 from them. I have or will write a review of that hitch under that item soon. The Curt would not articulate forward and backwards and I was unable to hookup my 30ft Fifth wheel as it the RV is in an enclosure and there was a very slight incline and the hitch wouldn't line up. After contacting Etrailer.com with the problem and doing more research on other hitches I settled on this hitch. Bill at etrailer gave this hitch a great review and recommendation. he first attempted to help me with the Curt hitch and when I decided it wouldn't work he helped me with return shipping and shipping out the new one. I just finished installing the Reese I hooked up with NO problems on the first try! I'd spent over an hour and half trying to get the Curt to hookup! so to say I'm pleased would be an understatement. Now, this is a more expensive hitch but the peace of mind going some place and being able to hook and unhook on uneven ground is worth it! the only problem I encountered was one of the supplied lock nuts was not machined correctly so i'll purchase one here. this hitch is easy to mount in the rails unlike the Curt. but mostly I'm so impressed with the customer service. everyone I spoke with but especially Bill...........returned my calls, answered my questions and made sure I was completely satisfied! if I encounter any problems with the hitch i'll post after my first pull in a few weeks. 261215

Unit has functioned adequately. Two problems with this unit. 1 - the green indicator did not have a spring installed when it arrived. I ordered a new indicator and on the seconday use with the new indicator the spring broke out. 2- the Greece nipple on the unit both fell out as if they were never threaded in. Pushed the nipple back in and have worked with them in this condition. I didn't notice the greas nipple issue until the second year when I first tried to grease the unit. 268032

  • How to Determine if I Can Make a 90 Degree Turn with a 5th Wheel Trailer and a Dodge Ram Mega Cab
  • I know turning clearance can be a problem with the Megacab models of the Ram trucks. We do not carry any automatic sliding hitches at this time, only manual slide hitches, but we often find that sliding fifth wheel hitches do not always cut it when it comes to the Ram trucks with the Megacab due to the bed and cab size. Typically, a Sidewinder pin box and a fixed fifth wheel hitch is required to safely make a 90 degree turn with these trucks, especially if the trailer does not have the

  • Proper Trailer Height for Unhitching Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • Your king pin must be on the short end of tolerance. A fifth wheel king pin won't come in varying lengths, they're pretty much industry standard unless they're worn. Ideally, when you hitch and unhitch, you want the king pin about an inch to an inch and 1/2 below level. That way when you're hitching up, the hitch will actually lift the king pin a bit to prevent the fifth wheel from being high-hitched. You can jack the fifth wheel until the truck bed begins to lift, then drop it down

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 2014 Toyota Tundra 5.7 Liter Standard Bed Off Road Package
  • According to the owners manual for the 2014 Toyota Tundra the maximum that the truck can tow is 10,500 pounds and that is for a specific model (2-wheel drive, regular cab, long bed with 5.7 liter and factory towing package). Since your model has the off road package it is likely 4-wheel drive. Depending on the model code of your truck you might be able to tow up to 9,900 pounds. You will want to consult the truck owners manual to know specifically what your towing capacity is since there

  • Will Factory 5th Wheel Rail Kit Fit a Reese Hitch in a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
  • If Chevy is putting in the below the bed 5th wheel trailer hitch installation kit for Reese then you will need to use a Reese Elite Series 5th wheel trailer hitch # RP30142 for a long bed or # RP30144 for a short bed. The Reese R20, # RP30867, fits industry standard above the bed rails with mounting slots that are spaced 20-1/2 inches apart on center side to side and 22 inches apart on center front to back.

  • How Hard is Installation of a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Chevy Silverado 3500HD Dually
  • Installation of a 5th wheel trailer hitch takes the better part of the day and probably a couple of friends and a case of your favorite non-alcoholic beverage. It also depends on which installation kit you choose. There are custom kits and universal kits. The difference is that a custom kit requires far less drilling and time to install when compared to a universal kit. For your 2013 Chevy Silverado I recommend custom installation kit # RP50066-58. It is the custom kit that we like to

  • 5th Wheel Hitch To Fit Either 2013 Flagstaff or 2014 Rockwood RV Using a 2009 Dodge 1500 5-1/2ft bed
  • The hitch installation measurements will be the same when installing a 5th wheel hitch in your 2009 Dodge 1500 Crewcab shortbed no matter which 5th wheel trailer you choose. Considering your vehicle and your trailer options, I recommend using the Reese 16K Premium Double Jaw # RP30866. The main reason I picked this unit was because it is a double jaw system which is good for secure towing, and most important, it has a vibration-isolator-system that reduces jarring. The custom base

  • What is the Best Type of Truck for Towing a 2013 Keystone Cougar 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Any 3/4 ton or 1 ton (250/350 or 2500/500) is going to be able to handle the weight of your 5th wheel trailer without a problem. This trailer is actually on the light side as far as 5th wheels go, but I imagine that the weights you have given are the dry weights and the trailer will have a higher gross weight. But that will not be a problem either. An F-250 will be a good choice. But I strongly advise that you get a long bed (8 foot bed). A long bed truck is going to provide you with

  • Will the Reese R20 5th Wheel Hitch RP30867 Fit in Bed Rails Used for a Gooseneck Plate
  • Many of the fifth-wheel rail brands have standardized hole spacing on their rails, so the Reese R20 fifth-wheel will fit as long as you have Reese, Draw-Tite, Pro Series, Curt, Valley, or Husky brand rails. You could also look at the brand on the gooseneck plate. If it is one of the brands I mentioned, then you would know that the R20 fifth-wheel will work in the rails also. I am including a demonstration video of the R20 for reference.

Also, a Reese hitch that fits in above the bed rails will fit in Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Pro Series, Reese, Husky, and Valley rails. The Reese R20 is compatible with Reese, Curt, Hidden Hitch, Draw-Tite, Pro Series, Husky or Valley bed rails.

To see what the dimensions of a standard king pin are see the picture I attached for the part # T809. This would be a good replacement king pin for you to use. Or you could replace your entire pin box which might be easier. You will need to figure what model you have currently by checking the sticker or plate

In fact the installation instructions indicate that this lube plate should not be lubricated with automotive grease. An additional round lube plate should not be used in conjunction with this specific hitch, since it has the custom lube
