Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power
Braking Output
During the initial setup process, use the adjustment buttons on the left front of the Engage controller to adjust the braking output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes. To view the output setting, press either button and release. The output setting will appear as a percentage on the digital display - from 10 to 99. Use the plus and minus buttons to raise or lower the setting in increments of 5.
Power Ramp Time Setting
To adjust how aggressively the trailer brakes activate, press and hold the minus button until the display flashes, then release. The power ramp time (1-5 seconds) will flash. Use the minus button to cycle through the options. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, select a lower number. To get smoother braking action, select a higher number. When the desired ramp time is reached, press the plus button to select it. You can alter the ramp time setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.
Manual Override
The Hayes Engage keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.
Quick, Simple Installation
Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.
If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.
See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.
Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.
Time-Delayed Braking
The Hayes Engage comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Engage. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (power ramp) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Hayes Brake Controller Adapter
To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.
This adapter plugs into the 5-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.
No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Perfectly fit harness made hooking up my brake Controller a breeze in my 2013 Tundra.
The 4 pin quick fix flat connector worked decent ... a little tricky getting it snapped together after all 4 wires were in place as it appears it was not designed for this gage of wire but it did the job..478798
After one year of use the unit works as advertised but does require some getting used to.When first installed it goes to 25% activation in a total of 5 seconds so I turned it down to 15% and like it better loaded or empty..I prefer a proportional controller over timed but due to shortages at the time of purchase this one has filled the job well..Good price and easy install so will see how long it lasts...1595604

Nissan Titan pulling a fully loaded 14x7 Cargo Mate Blazer enclosed trailer. The unit was pretty easy to install. etrailer included the proper wiring harness for my Titan. It is not difficult to find the proper brake setting for the load size and not hard to tweak on the fly. This unit worked like a charm while hauling this large load about 1000 miles. So far it has been worth every penny and I got it at a great price!657023

Easy to install as I also ordered the wire adapter kit for my truck. Installation was quick and the unit works as I expected. Good investment for safety. Between the phone help with the ordering of the wire adapter kit and You Tube, it took me longer to watch the videos than it actually took to install it.830353

How is it not working. Just not fitting the adapter? What adapter plug are you using? Could it be possible you are using the wrong plug?
by: James06/15/2019
I have not had a chance to use the brake controller yet. I did get it installed today. The installation was easy. The only thing that I might say is that the set up information was not very clear. It seems like there should be a notation somewhere in the set up about how long the lights are going to flash when there is an OC readout on the unit or how to stop the flashing. Maybe I missed something in the instructions.658644

this is the best for the money you can buy,I deleted one star because the info on color codes as relates to my 2022 gmc makes it difficult to match color codes with the truck. neither kelsey or gm are great at this identification, particuly in terms of battery/ grounds/ signal /trailer brakes/ etc1355210

I purchased this item, didn’t read enough to know I needed an adaptor to fit my Chevy Silverado. Cut the wires and spliced them into my Chevy pigtail provided. Thought the item was not working. Called in and was told someone would call me back the next day with instructions. As told, a representative call me and advised me that Chevy has a different color code. After a quick change everything was functioning as hoped thank you e trailer671183

I love it, I have one in both of my trucks. It works on single & double axle brakes., you can adjust the delay & see what you set it on and don't have to guess what it is on. Very easy to adjust brakes for your loads, there again you can also see what you have it set on also. My neighbor used one of my trucks to haul a load hay & loved it . To install the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 on your 2020 Chevrolet Express Van you will need the Wiring Adapter # HA81789-HBC. If your van included the 7-way wiring you will need to check for the wiring taped and tucked under the driver side floor mat up towards the firewall. If you can not find the wiring here you may also have the blue output brake wire already ran from the back to the front. It is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal.

The problem is either the wiring of your brake controller or the brake controller itself has internal problems. What it sounds like is happening is that the stoplight switch of your brake controller (usually red) is backfeeding onto the brake light circuit of your 1997 Dodge Ram which is activating the brake lights of your truck.
This would indicate that the controller has shorted out and would need to be replaced. I attached an FAQ on brake controller installs for you to check out as view full answer...

Your answer depends on what connector you have. If the Ranger has a factory-installed 7-way it should have a standard brake controller connection port above and to the left of your left knee when seated; this will be near the kick panel.
If the truck instead has a factory 4-pole harness, under the dash there will be three blunt-cut wires, blue, yellow with red tracer and white with purple tracer each for the controller output, the 12V power input and the brake light switch wire. These view full answer...
The brake controller you have installed in your 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 would not affect the performance of the rear brakes of your truck. To install the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 on your 2008 Toyota Tundra with a factory 7-way you wouldn't need to do any hardwiring. All you would need to do is plug in the # HA81785-HBC harness to your factory brake controller install port.

Thank you for your purchase from etrailer of the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760. I looked at the instructions (linked below) and the SC means "short circuit" which "indicates a direct short to ground in the blue wire (output) circuit."
So you'll want to take a look at the blue brake wire and see if there is damage there. It could also mean your trailer or Dakota's 7-way is damage or corroded which often prevents signals from getting through, and if so you could replace view full answer...
I did some research and found that on some brake controllers, the "cl" code stands for Current Limit. This indicates that the brake controller has sensed a power requirement greater than its recommended output. This could result from an intermittent short to ground, a faulty brake magnet, or too many brakes connected to the controller.

The error codes shown on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller part # HA81760 can be easily deciphered by looking at the owner's manual. Per the manual, "bF" indicates the blue wire is connected to wrong place, short in wiring / connector, faulty or disconnected breakaway switch. The blue wire is the brake output wire that runs from the brake controller to the 7-way and then from the 7-way to the braking assemblies. Therefore, I recommend tracing this wire to ensure there are no shorts view full answer...

I reached out to my tech contact at Hayes to assist. The CP code on your Hayes Engage # HA81760 is not outlined in your owners manual because it is a calibration setting that is only common to see at the factory. He recommends disconnecting the controller completely and letting it sit for about 10 minutes so it completely discharges and then reconnecting it to see if it will re-calibrate and work properly. If that does not solve the issue, he recommends having it replaced.

According to the operating instructions (I'll email you a copy) the bF error code indicates that there's a short somewhere in the brake output circuit, which is the blue wire that exits the rear of the controller and delivers the voltage to the trailer brakes through the trailer connector.

All brake controllers including the Hayes Engage # HA81760 you have installed will stay turned on, but the LED light for the screen is the only thing being powered and it times out after around 15 minutes so it should not be able to drain your battery.
