Proportional Braking
With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.
As long as the P3 controller sits level on a horizontal plane and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.
Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing
Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's P3 brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.
So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.
If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.
Storable Settings
Customize your P3 and store settings so that you can easily access them later. If you tow multiple trailers, or the same one but with differing loads, store the desired boost and power levels for each so that you don't have to completely reset the controller every time you switch between the trailers. Customize the P3 display with your desired screen color, brightness and language, and you can easily return it to your preferred settings the next time you tow.

Safety Features
The Prodigy P3 offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts. When the P3 is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to only 3.6 milliamps, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.
When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the P3's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.
If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.
Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation
The self-leveling feature of the P3 ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at any vertical angle, and the controller will level itself automatically thanks to its 360-degree rotational range.
Note: The P3 must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.
Installation is a snap. After mounting the P3 unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the P3 to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and slide it out of the bracket.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter
For most applications, the factory plug is located beneath the dash, near the center console. If you have a Ford full-size van, the harness is underneath and to the left of the steering column. The Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer have 6-pin connectors behind the glove box on the passenger's side. On a 2013 Ford Explorer, the connection point could be behind the driver's side kick panel.
To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.
This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Today on this 2011 Ford Expedition we are going to be installing the Prodigy P2 brake control kit, part number 90885-3035P. Starting off inside the cab of the Expedition, and the first thing we want to do is locate the brake control port that we are going to be plugging our wiring harness into. And this port is located on the driver side of the vehicle, just below the steering column is this grey open ended plug right here. So with the port located, we can go ahead and take our wiring harness. Go ahead and plug it in. With the harness plugged in, we will want to next determine where we want to mount our brake controller. We want to mount it in a position where it can be easily accessed by the hand of the driver but also does not interfere with normal driving conditions. On this particular vehicle, over here on the right side of the steering wheel, if I follow below right about even with where our port is, the underside of the dash here has a small lip. I believe it is just wide enough for us to actually us as a mounting point. And I am going to be using the more traditional bracket that comes with the Prodigy P2 controller. We can mount it in position just like so. You do want to make sure when you are mounting the brake control bracket that it is mounted in a straight line with the braking of the vehicle. 1:31
With the mounting bracket up, we will go ahead and mount the P2 next. And then finally, we just need to take the other end of our wiring harness and plug it into the back side of our brake controller. And you can see instantly, we get an NC flashing on the screen which indicates that we do not currently have a trailer hooked up to the tow vehicle. And then it stops flashing and goes straight to two dots. And then you can see once we plug into our trailer, the brake controller goes to a C. And from there, once we hit our brake pedal we get our digital read out like we are looking for. And that is all there is to the installation. It might be a good idea to go ahead and tie up the loose wires we have here on the back side. But with that our installation will be complete. That will conclude the installation of the Prodigy P2 brake controller, part number 90885-3035P.
The brake controller you have selected is an excellent choice and will work with your motor home. It sounds like water is getting in somewhere creating a short. Since it happens when the trailer is not connected, I would check the cover for the 7-Way and see it closes all the way. If not, that is probably what is letting the water in.
You can also check the harness and connectors behind the 7-Way to see if they are cracked or chipped. If so, clean them and make sure you use some dielectric grease, like part # 11755, in the connectors to help keep water out. view full answer...
The Tekonsha P-3 will go into a sleep mode after several minutes of no activity. The power draw while in this sleep mode is so small that it is really not worth worrying about, certainly not enough to discharge your battery.
If it would make you feel better, you could unplug the harness from the rear of the unit if the vehicle will be left for long periods of time.

Both of these brake controllers are made by Tekonsha and are high rated and popular models. The main difference between the two is that the P3 can be used with both electric brakes and electric over hydraulic brakes and can toggle between the two systems as needed. It also has an LCD display and is supposed to be able to troubleshoot problems in the system. Basically, if you want more features, pick the P3.

If you are receiving the Open Ground error message, you will want to check all your ground wires to make sure they are still firmly connected to a suitable grounding location. The brake controller, vehicle connector, and trailer connector must all be grounded in order for the unit to function properly. Make sure the grounding locations are not covered by any paint or rust.

Half-way through the 2007 model year, GM quit using the plug-in brake controller port. They went back to a wire bundle.
You will find a wire bundle taped up underneath your dash. It will have 4 or 5 wires, red, dark blue, light blue, white and sometimes brown. You will have to splice or butt-connect the wires underneath your dash to the wire leads on the P-3. The wires need to match up as follows:

There are only two Tekonsha brake controllers that work with electric over hydraulic brakes. First is the P-3, # 90195. The other is the Prodigy P2, # 90885. On the 2004 Dodge Sprinter Van if you have a factory tow package there will be a 7-way trailer connector on the rear of your vehicle that would be installed from the factory. If you have a 7-way at the rear you will want to make sure it is a factory installed 7-way and not an aftermarket installed connector.

I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha regarding the PS Brake Controller, # 90195. He stated that while descending or ascending an incline the self-leveling on the brake controller will calculate at what percent incline the vehicle is at, and apply a proportional amount of trailer braking based on the angle and how much braking the towing vehicle is doing.

If you are receiving the error intermittently, the most likely culprit is a short, meaning a crimped or exposed section on the power lead wire, which runs from the brake controller to your positive battery terminal. While the vehicle is in motion, any exposed point on this wire could come in contact with a metal surface and cause a short in the system.

On a 2004 Explorer with the newer body, the port is behind the glove box on the left side. You will open the glove box, push in the two tabs it rests on to get it to open further and the connector is buried on the left hand side, close to the center console.

The female port for this part should be located underneath the dash close to or behind the center console, it is gray in color. It should be very close to the OBDII diagnostic port, the large trapezoidal shape plug by the center console underneath the dash. It sounds to me as if you may have a wiring harness that is pinned out improperly causing the fuse to blow.
The first thing I would do is check the pin out diagram in the instructions (see link) and make sure your connector matches the diagram in the instructions. If it is improperly pinned you can change the pin out to the correct orientation using the instructions.
If the connector is pinned out properly there may be an issue with the brake controller or vehicle wiring.

I spoke with one of our installers and he informed me that the factory port you are looking for will be towards the center of the dash on the driver side. It will be located within 6 to 12 inches of the OBD II port. If you have the bottom panel removed on the driver side of the dash and are looking in and up towards the center of the dash you should be able to see the plug. It won't be hanging down, and may be tucked away behind some other wires. The color of the port should be gray.

He did not have specific information regarding the 2011 models, but historically the Ford Escape has been a hardwire only model. This means that you would first need a 4-Way wiring harness.

First, a huge "Thank You" to Janice!!! You are the best, and the main reason I am the proud owner of Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller! (see, I initially had an issue with my standard online payment service and almost canceled my order because of it) So I went old school and picked up the phone, one with a cord and spoke to a human being. Her name is Janice, and she made me feel confident that I could trust her and etrailer. And as a result, 4 days after placing my order with her I received my package. That's incredible. I am very happy and will most certainly do business with etrailer again in the future because of Janice.
I don't have any experience with brake controllers. So I can't really comment on how much better or worse this one is to any others. But since I am new to the B/C scene maybe this can be considered an unbiased, non professional review of the Tekonsha P3.
My general skill level is "requires supervision around all power tools". But I do have some mechanical ability (snicker). So I will just say, if I could install this thing anyone should be able to do it. Of course I also bought the OEM wiring harness for my vehicle so even I was able to figure out which plug went where. On A scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 3 (I'm somewhat large and getting under the dash wasn't easy or it would be a 1). And as others have said, deciding where to mount it actually took longer.
I attached mine to the top of the lower dash cowl and it fits almost tight to the dash but still within the 180 degree limit. This positions the controller at the same height as my knee and puts it within fingertip reach while resting my hand on my knee. I can see the controller perfectly through the steering wheel spokes. I went with the green screen background. it seemed to provide the best view in all lighting conditions.
The controller itself works perfectly and the set-up was a breeze. Once installed all the functions worked as described. The real time vehicle diagnostics are a plus. I like being able to monitor my battery voltage to the decimal place if I want to. I'm sort of a techno geek so this is really cool. I set the B/C voltage per the instructions and will only use the boost feature if I am in a hurry or feel the trailer is at max load, but my truck is 8k lbs so you may want to set yours to suit your own conditions.
I highly recommend the Tekonsha P3 brake Controller if you want the latest and probably the best controller out there in this price range. I highly recommend the OEM wiring harness if your skills are not pit crew comprable and want the easiest install possible. And, I highly recommend you buy it from etrailer if you want to get it at the best price available (I checked them all) and want the added security you're buying from one of the best online retailers that sells this product. And do yourself a favor, go old school for a change, use the phone and call them, and ask for Janice, although I'm willing to bet everyone there is as nice as her.

This is absolutely the best brake controller I have every towed with! For years I have used a Reese controller for my 30 ft travel trailer and smaller utility trailer and have always been beaten to death while trying to fine tune the controller to varying loads and road conditions. With the P3 the braking is smooth and us unnoticeable until it is placed on its highest boost setting. I am very pleased with the ease of installation and simplicity of the controls on the P3. Just installed today in my 2005 Ford Expedition and it looks great, cant wait to use it. Because I only pull occasional and my wife has short legs she wanted it out of the way so I installed it in the center compartment without any problems. Ford already had a whole cut in the compartment and I used the factory wire from E trailer and the wire that came with the unit to make a longer wire (Only needed about 3 inches) and installed in about 30 minutes with removing the cup holders and running the wire.
Best part you dont see the device in day to day driving but when you need it, it is right at your side

I will be honest, trailer brake controllers do 1 thing, they stop trailers. However; I have never had one install this easy, and look this good. This one went on a 2004 Ford F-150 I use it on a mowing crew trailer with 2 axle brakes, when I plugged it in the controller told me I had a bad ground on the trailer, and it was right. Fixed the wire and away we went. I just wish my snow plow plug looked as good as the brake controller. Shipping was fast, and I will do business with etrailer again.9251

I have this for my 87 Ford Ranger. Thanks to several upgrades, the truck has ample power to pull around my single axle dump trailer. Unfortunately it's too light to stop it with 4ton of sand. The brake controller is extremely adjustable, easy to read, the boost button takes the annoyance out of pulling an empty, then full, then empty trailer. These are digital readouts of exact voltage or current. Excellent product I am very pleased with the controller, I would not have bought any other. However, my only problem is that it does not turn off, even with the key off. If you leave it plugged in, it will drain your battery. It has to be unplugged. The comment by Greg W. on 5/5/09 needs to be corrected. He incorrectly claims that the unit will run down a battery if not unplugged. The P3 automatically powers down after 15 minutes of inactivity to a very low power state where it quietly watches the input voltages but does not waste any power by running the display. It can remain in this state for months without draining the battery. It instantly wakes up when any activity is detected and remains awake as long as the vehicle is being used.

Called my local tow/haul/ship franchise to see if they had the Prodigy P3 in stock so I could swing by and pick it up. Got forwarded to their national call center, couldn't even reach the local store after 5 or 6 attempts. Much nicer than the P2 I bought for a different vehicle. Having the text on screen to tell you what is going on trumps the codes of the P2 all day. Comes with 2 mounting brackets/options and a good amount of wire for the connection to tow vehicle. Instructions are a little generic but they need to be as each type of vehicle will be different. Installed on 2012 Chevy Express 3500 with factory heavy duty tow package. Found that Chevy was kind enough to connect the power under hood, so the only connections were the 4 wires under the dash near firewall.76403

It installed easily, but the bracket is a little big for the product and the display is not as easy to read as it could be. It needs one more connection so that the display will brighten and dim with the turning on of the dash lights. It would be better it the display did not come on unless a trailer was attached. I installed this to safely tow a Trillium trailer with a 2010 Subaru Forester. Works great, had no problems with it. Installing it is left up to you, but there are a number of tutorials kicking around for a Subaru. Hardest part is fishing the wires.

Just returned from my test run of the newly installed P3 controller (on 2011 Silverado) and it works great! I a little surprised as I installed it myself and electricals terrify me. The instructional video is complete, accurate and very valuable; install was easy, even relaxing. The setup of operational parameters is quite simple and the manual comprehensive and concise. This is an excellent product.
I give very high marks to etrailer as a fine retailer. The catalog is easily understood and navigated. I replaced a functioning Tekonsha Prodigy with the new P-3. The P3 manual control lever is far better than the Prodigy. The power and sensitivity settings are far more accurate and repeatable with the P3. I have multiple trailers and pull in the snow and ice often, so I need different settings for the same trailer depending on road conditions. The P3 was a good choice.62555

AMAZING. New Toyota Tundra (2013) installation. Purchased the P3 + installation cable. Install went flawless and the setup of the P3 could not have been easier. The setup for the empty trailer and then for the full trailer took no more than 10-15 minutes (not including loading the horses). On the first outing, 450 miles with flawless braking. Great product. I use it to tow my 27' travel trailer and it works great. I love the display. After I installed it, I noticed the unit stayed on after I turned the truck off. After a quick internet search, I learned the unit stays on for about 15 minutes after the truck is shut off. I found this to be accurate on my unit as well.
I do wish the screws that attach the dash mount to the cradle were a little more finished. They appear to be standard sheet metal screws and since they are silver and everything else is black, they kind of stick out. But that is just me being picky. If I really wanted I could hop over to ACE and get some better screws. 60075

Excellent product. Up until now, I've never towed a trailer that was big enough to need trailer brakes. This controller was easy enough for even a rookie like myself to install and set up. The plug-in wiring adapter was a perfect fit for a clean factory look. No splicing or soldering. Was nice to be able set the led color to match my instruments. The '03 Avalanche now tows(and brakes) my trailer comfortably. Multiple boost settings are a big plus. Mine works well using the "boost 1" for heaver loaded trailer, or going up and down mountain roads. This is really a modern, stylish, and very funtional brake controller. A+56648

Very happy with this unit! Easier to set-up and not affected by hills like my old Sentinel was. Stops feel like the truck/trailer are one vehicle, and that's if I'm pulling a single axle utility trailer or a heavy-duty tandem axle equipment trailer fully loaded. Love that I can just unclip it and transfer from one truck to the next (I run two trucks).
The built in diagnostics are awesome features, I was able to correct a short-circuit on the roadside very quickly (wire rubbing against a metal bracket) and continue my trip with the trailer brakes working correctly!51836
This is the first controller I have used and I bought it for work and, it seems to work great.
Get the custom wiring harness etrailer offers, if you do all you have to do is plug it in, five minute install, hardest part is getting your head and hands underneath the dash board.
The fact that the controller easily disconnects from the harness and has a storage bag makes it great since I don't us it very often.
Since I have only moved the trailer a short distance with this, I do not have any technical details on the controller other than it seems to work and the brightness is not an issue, it's subtle and you can change the colors if you like. It looks like it has lots of features to adjust braking strength and timing.51667
I just purchased this and installed myself based on all the positive reviews I've read. Everything works great. The only surprise was when the unit wouldn't turn off when I took the key out of the ignition. I guess Tekonsha did this as a safety feature, allowing you to apply the trailer brakes even if your truck is turned off. Draw on your truck battery is minimized after a bit when the unit goes to sleep.
One suggestion: solder all of your connections. Crimp connections are mentioned as an option, but when it comes to trailer safety, you want solder connections for reliability. 51421

The installation was easy on my 2008 Chevy 2500 Silverado since the wiring harness was already set up from the factory. The dash bottom is so low on the 2500 models that the only good location to mount the unit is above the center hump otherwise the controller rubs your pant legs. Set up was easy and it seems to activate the brakes on my trailer correctly. The standard bracket mount is more sturdy than the cradle mount and I don't recommend the cradle.49681
The Tekonsha P-3 was reasonably easy to install, and works like a champ. I had to spend a bit of extra time fishing wires because my truck didn't come with factory tow package wiring, but even then it wasn't hard, just time-consuming to route the wires where they won't get chafed. The controller comes with a nifty click-in mount, but I just used the U-bracket (also included) because I have no need to move it between vehicles. It's nice to have the choice of how to mount it. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow, even for a non-plug-in installation.
It took me a little while to get it adjusted so that the trailer brakes didn't lock up on hard stops, but once I got it there, it's great - no more feeling like my trailer is going to push the truck through the intersection when I stop. It's easy to adjust for different trailer weights. It's almost too easy to adjust, in fact: I'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure I don't accidentally hit the "boost" button, which is designed for heavier trailers - I wish there were some way to disable the boost feature from the menus.
Overall I'm delighted with the P-3. I like the text interface instead of cryptic numbers that so many units use, and I love the way it performs.49045

I just received the P3 in the mail much sooner than I expected. I ran out to my truck and had it installed in less than 10 minutes. So far so good. Initial impressions are favorable. Need to get a few more miles on the unit to have a solid opinion. Presently have it mounted under the dash. Less than 24 hours after installation, I hit it with my foot and pulled one of the screws out of the plastic in the lower dash panel. The ordering process was easy and fast. I was even surprised to receive an email letting me know my shipping was upgraded for free. Outstanding service. The snap in (removable) mount was a bit flimsy so I used the second option ( metal bracket) to install it with two included sheet metal screws. The hardest part was deciding exactly where I wanted it mounted. Once I drilled the holes I connected it with the cable for my vehicle (also ordered with this unit) and I was done. I think it was 10 minutes of work at most. I hitched up my box trailer and went for a test drive. After two adjustments to the break power by moving the up and down arrows on the unit and I was ready to go.
As far as some complaints that the unit stays on all the time in other reviews, I have found that it appears to go to sleep when the truck is off and comes back on when I step on the brake as I get in or start the vehicle. I would give it 5 stars if the quick release bracket was better, but the metal one works great.46838

I would hint to those with a 2010 F150 with the Tow Package, if the connector is not behind the black cup as shown in the video, it will be taped to a harness under the steering shaft and above the brake pedal as shown in the picture. The hardest part about installing this brake controller was finding a good location for mounting in my Toyota Tacoma. My Toyota has a factory tow package so all I had to do was plug in the brake controller and route the wire harness. The P-3 was just installed yesterday so other than towing the trailer 4 miles i have no experience using teh controller. However, the professional who installed in indicated it was a very good unit. The specs compared to other units appeared to be as good as or better than others. The e-trailer reps that assited me were excellent in terms of product knowledge and service. She waited on phone and directed me to observe certain features of my vehicle (Tahoe) and based on those findings recommended that i purchase only the unit itself without any additional wiring, etc., which saved me money. We have the Prodigy P2 in my wife's 2010 Silverado and we don't know why we suffered through the jerky stops with the "non-Prodigy." So, when it came time to replace my truck, I put the P3 in it. 2012 Ram; installation was mere child's play. Really, I turned down the OEM trailer-brake controller for the Prodigy. I have had two of these P3 units. They do install well and stop the trailer well. Unfortunately both units I have had developed problems with the up down push buttons sticking in. If you google this issue related to this controller you will see others have the same issue.40596

I haven't used it on with a trailer yet but the installlation was super easy, I went through the menus and it seems pretty easy to use. The only thing I woud have wanted is more specific instructions for my vehicle, I ordered the kit for my vehicle (wiring harness 3040-P). I did a quick search on youtube and found someone already uploaded a video of their installation. It took about 20 minutes, do not waste the money paying someone to install this for you.39840

Installed this on my GMC 3500 Duramax with factory integrated brake controller. Not happy with the integrated brake controller on my truck, had problems from the start on 3 different occasions with "Service Trailer Brake" warning on DIC, which of course means NO TRAILER BRAKES. Decided the P3 was the perfect solution. Many more features than the IBC, plus the P3 will also work with electric over hydraulic disc brakes should we ever need that in the future. Fairly easy install on this particular truck, the most difficult thing was running the brake wire from the controller to the 7-pin plug. (This is only required when installing in a vehicle with a factory installed brake control) Well worth the extra effort.39447

I order the Tekonsha Brake controller and cable for my 2012 Ford Explorer. The customer service was outstanding. No automated answering systems. I was speaking with a human being in seconds and she was extremely knowledgeable of this product and the installation. I received the product in 3 days just as promised, received a confirmation, email, and email that the product shipped with tracking information, and an email indicating the product was delivered. I’m overwhelmed by the customer service. The product just as advertised is great it hooked up in about 5 minutes the cables fit and does an excellent job with my trailer. I haul a small stock car to and from the track and this controller is extremely easy to use and have very advance capabilities. The installation was on a 2012 Ford Explorer with the tow package. The wire to connect the brake controller is under the dash right next to the hood release level. Only pulled a boat with surge brakes in the past so this was my first purchase of a proportional brake controller. Ordered online and also purchased the Brand-specific wiring harness for my 2003 Toyota Tundra, which I bought with a factory tow package with 7-pin connector. Received my package in 4 days.
