Time-Delayed Braking

The Activator II applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Activator. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Activator sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Sync Settings

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide control on the side of the Activator II to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, move the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Activator II requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the Activator, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Wiring Colors

Today we are going to cover a frequently asked question. It really turns up a lot. And actually it is easier than you think. Basically, if you have a pickup and you got a tow package with it and you got one of these wire harnesses that plug underneath the dash and plugs into your brake controller, you might have five or sometimes even more wires coming off of it. And you notice that your brake controller only uses four. We have got one over here, we will show you, that has just the four wires and what do you do with the extra wires? The short answer is do not worry about it, because the brake controller has all that it needs from these four wires.

To give you an idea of what is going on, most of the time these harnesses are labeled as to what color does what. So this one will say TO TRAILER ELECTRIC BRAKE. That means that this is going out to the trailer itself. So if you look on the your brake controller, it is going to be the blue wire here, so those match up together just like that. The next one is labeled GROUND, so you go to the wire harness on your brake controller and find the one that is labeled GROUND in this case it is going to be white, also. And then the next wire, here, we do not have a label because the label fell off, but this is the 12 volt power supply wire here. A lot of times the brake controllers come with a little handy card that tells you what does what on the OEM harnesses, also. The thicker wire is usually going to be your power supply. So that would go to black, the 12 volt power supply wire on the brake controller.

Then you have the two wires left, the green and the brown. The green is labeled STOP LAMP, so that will go to the stop lamp circuit on your brake controller, which in our case will be red. And then you have the extra wire here, which is labeled ILLUMINATION FEED. Basically, this comes on when you turn on your running lights. So if you have something you need to power on the inside of your vehicle, for running lights you could possibly use this. But for towing purposes, I do not really know really what you could use this for no brake controller ever uses this. So basically all you do is just fold it back out of the way, tape it up so it doesnt short out against anything, and do not worry about it.

  • Draw Tite Activator 2 Displays Decimal or Dot and Does Nothing When Manual Switch is Activated
  • According to the instructions, when you have a decimal or dot displayed, it signals that there is no trailer connected. Without a trailer connected, there is no complete brake circuit so pressing the manual switch will do nothing. Try connecting a trailer first and following the setup portion of the instructions. In case you do not have your instructions, I have included a link to them below. I attached an FAQ page on brake controllers that you might find informative to the right.

  • What Does the SC Error Code Mean on the Activator II Trailer Brake Controller
  • On the 2-8 Electric Brake Controller, item # 5500, the code SC indicates that the brake controller output circuit is short circuited at some point between the point where the blue wire exits the rear of the controller and where it ultimately ends at each brake assembly at the brake magnet. The most common situation that causes this is a damaged or corroded trailer connector, either the socket on the vehicle or the plug on the trailer. Since you first encountered the problem when you connected the gooseneck to the in-bed connector, I would check the grounds for both the truck side and trailer side to make sure there is no corrosion and that they are attached properly. • Which Brake Controller for 2006 Chevy Silverado 3500 Series
  • For your needs, the major difference between the P2, part # 90885 and the P3, part # 90195 is the display. The P2 uses a digital display that shows the voltage output and error codes digitally. The P3 also shows the voltage output, but any error codes are specifically displayed and available at a glance, eliminating the need to consult the manual to determine what the numeric codes mean. The P3 also has the added advantage of being compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems. Either

My 2004 Chevy was equipped with trailer towing, so I ordered this controller with the harness made for my pickup. I could not believe how simple it was to install! I put it to use with my camper and it works flawlessly.40899

Nice product, easy to use Easy to use an upgrade from my Activator I unit. Has the same manual brake control that failed on the Activator I unit. Hopefully this one does not fail.2438

This hand break is exactly what I was looking for. I had one on an old truck that I had sold and wanted to put one in one of my newer trucks. I kind of knew what to expect - what I didn't expect was the exceptional customer service I received from etrailer. I placed my order and the people at etrailer kept me informed on every step of the delivery process up to and including delivery (even what door it was delivered to at my house) Now that's what I call service!! Will definitely use etrailer again!! Thank you31219

The Product was easily to find on your site. I was able to browse controllers specifically for my truck. The controller arrived as expecteed. I was kept informed on the order, shipment and delivery, and it came right when you said it would. It installed easily in about 1/2 hour. All the tests we did worked well. 30629

Break controller works perfect. I also bought a 7 way as my truck didn't have one installed only a 4pole. Ordered the etcb7 kit but didn't wait for it to come went to local hardware store and automotive store and bought the wire and breakers had it all wired in a few hours( weather wouldn't cooperate) 80128

Product is simple and strait forward to install. Controls are simple and doesn't take a lot of messing around with to get the hang of. My only gripe is that I wish instead of having self tapping screws to mount to the car, it came with bolts/nuts. That way you don't have a pointy screw protruding out the back of a panel and possibly running through what's behind the panel or rubbing on other wires.78265

Great brake controller. Bought the adapter plug and had it installed and ready to go in the truck in less than 30 mins. Easy to set and adjust. Customer service was great. Needed it shipped to me fast. Called and the lady in customer service made sure it was shipped that day and arrived to me in 2 days. She sent me emails making sure I knew when it shipped. Great company to deal with. Would definitely order from them again. 76020

Installing this into my 2005 Tahoe was a breeze. If you just follow the directions and check out etrailers videos you should have no problem. I went from a small popup to a bigger hybrid so I had to get the EBC system. This sure beats taking it to the RV or Dealer store and paying retail plus labor. Thanks etrailer.com 53924

If you desire a simplistic brake controller with no frills, this is it. It is a good value for the money. The installation instructions are very limited, would not recommend this to be installed by someone needing a lot of instruction help.44619

Great Product, VERY Easy to install. The only thing I would change is the length of the pig tail. The short length of the pigtail limits your options of product placement.38289

Love the digital display! Digital display is now a requirement when I order a brake controller. It is amazing how much better brake control I have knowing before hand how much brake will be applied.2017
