Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

by: Roger05/26/2022

The cable arrived and we'll be camping tomorrow knowing the trailer brakes will be working thanks to your quick shipping and nicely constructed cable for my brake controller. It took 5 minutes to install.

Have not had any problems with the cable or controller.

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Rolando Torres07/11/2013

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Larry Mcb.05/22/2022

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

2003 Ram 2500

If you are struggling with an older trailer brake set up buy the Tekonsha. Just do it. No more delayed braking, buckling or pulsating just a smooth even slow down of the truck and the trailer at the same time. Installed with the wiring adapter on my 2003 Dodge 2500 Diesel. Simple plug and play. Went around the block a couple of times and had this thing dialed in perfectly. Spend an extra $ or 2 and buy this thing. you will be happy you did.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help.

After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation.

Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain.

Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector.

5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly.

The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving.

I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery +

Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount.

I’ve had the Timbren suspension enhancement system for a year now on my ‘99 Dodge 1500 4x4. I purchased this product because I had to tow my bumper pull three horse trailer from South Carolina to N. Central Montana. With a camper top, the bed loaded and the trailer loaded the truck sagged really bad. With the Timbrens on the sag went away completely. Making for a much safer less stressful experience while towing.

by: Steven K.06/05/2018

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by: Tucker C06/15/2016

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch.
When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play.

by: David 02/09/2024

I ordered everything to install hitch an and 7 pin plug. Everything went great. Parts were all perfect and instructions easy to follow.

2001 Dodge Durango

Purchased the wiring harness for my 2001 Dodge Durango and installed the brake controller. It was very easy, as my vehicle had a tow package installed already. Only took 20 minutes to hook up. Recommend this harness for similar suv's. Tested out perfectly. The price was better than all local sources. Trailer pic attached.

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

by: Charles04/11/2020

Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Electric brake controller was easy to install on my 2007 Ram 2500 diesel. I purchased the factory connector from e-trailer and snapped right in place. At 1st couldn’t find connector on vehicle but after going on e-trailer FAQ I found it. Picture included. Customer service was outstanding

by: JM07/04/2016

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by: Jon W.05/15/2017

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

by: Rick08/25/2018

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by: Arthur01/15/2023

Actually, I haven’t used it. I have an original Tekonsha that I have used for about 16 years with 3 previous cars and trailers and it is still working fine. It gives me much more information about the operation of the trailer brakes than the model I purchased from you. Since that controller is very old and yours was not very expensive, I decided to keep it as an emergency spare. Thanks for Checking,

by: Timothy 02/04/2024

Same as the adapter plug , just mount , plug and play.

by: William 09/15/2023

Installation was super easy with the vehicle specific wiring harness, just plug it in and screw the mounting bracket where you want it. It was that easy! Took about 15 mins or so. The controller works great, I towed about 10k lbs and stopping was very manageable. I would recommend this to anyone!

Do you have a question about this Trailer Brake Controller?

  • Tekonsha PowerTrac Brake Controller on 2015 RAM 1500 Wont Activate Trailer Brakes With Brake Pedal
  • Due to the multiplex wiring used in the stoplamp circuit of your Ram, most time delayed controllers (including the 39523) aren't sensitive enough to 'read' the input received on the red wire that tells the controller that the brakes have been applied. This is why we don't have that brake controller listed in the fitguide for the 2015 Ram. The # 3024-P you currently have will work, but you'll need to use a different brake controller. I'd recommend going with the Brake EVN, part # TK63VR.

  • Trailer Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2012 Ford Expedition with Factory Tow Package
  • There basically two types of brake controllers: time delay and proportional. Time delay controllers, like # 39523 that you have referenced, send back a pre-set amount of voltage over a certain amount of time which can be adjusted. It can take some time determining the best set up for any given trailer when using a time delay controller and there is more wear and tear on both the vehicle and the trailer. The benefit is that time-delay controllers do not have many mounting restrictions. Proportional

  • Tips for Accessing Brake Controller Install Port of 2008 Dodge Ram with Factory 7-Way
  • I attached a picture that I think illustrates the issue you are having. The blue connector you need to plug the # 3020-P into is pretty close to the main harness that runs to the PCM of the truck which makes it interesting to access. If you check out the second picture you can see how we normally accomplish this by bending the wires of the connector so that the connector can get in as needed. Also, if you check out the 2:10 mark of the install video link I attached you can see how we

  • Install Harness Needed to Install P2 or P3 Brake Controller in a 2007 Dodge Ram
  • The P2 # 90885 and the P3 # 90195 are both excellent controllers. Internally they are the same controller. The only difference is the P3 has a more advanced display setup that allows for easier understanding of what's going on with the controller and trailer. The P2 would work well for you. To install either controller in a 2007 Dodge Ram would only require the install harness part # 3020-P.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation and Install for 2005 Dodge Ram with 4-Way
  • You would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the 7-Way Adapter part # 37185. To install a Tekonsha brake controller you will then need the install harness part # 3020-P so that it is wired to your truck. Brake (blue) wire does not run all the way back to the 4-pole at the rear; it stops at the connector that is located under the driver's side wheel well. In order to finalize the installation you must splice into this

  • Where is the Brake Controller Port on a 2005 Dodge Dakota
  • If your 2005 Dodge Dakota came with the factory 7-way trailer connector then it has the factory tow package and you should have the brake controller plug-in port which can be found underneath the dash and left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. There will be a 4-pin connector that mates with the one on the adapter. If you do not already have a brake controller then I recommend using the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160

  • Wires Coming Off of the Brake Controller on a 2006 Dodge Ram
  • Each of the four wires has a specific purpose. The white wire needs to be grounded, the red wire goes to the stop light switch on your vehicle , the black wire must be run through a circuit breaker and then to your battery, and the blue wire sends the brake signal to your trailer. Do you have a factory installed 7-way? If so, you will only need to plug in the brake controller adapter, such as the Tekonsha Wire Replacement for Dodge Vehicles, part # 3020-P. If you have a factory installed

  • Easy to Install Brake Controller Recommendation for 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with Tow Package
  • That wire is most likely an illumination circuit for a brake controller to light up a backlit display. This isn't used on modern brake controllers so you can go ahead and disregard it. Then for an easy to install brake controller solution you'd want the part # 3020-P which plugs in under the dash of the truck and would allow you to use a brake controller like the Prodigy P2 part # 90885 which is one of our best selling controllers due to how well it works and how easy to use it is.

  • You can use the install harness part # 3020-P to install a brake controller in your 2004 Dodge Ram. You would need to cut off the end that would plug into the brake controller and then hardwire those wires to the controller instead. This way you will be able to still use your current brake controller.

  • Completing Tow Package Wiring on 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory 4-Pole Trailer Connector
  • You are correct, at least two of those remaining wires will need to be dealt with in order for your trailer brakes to function. On the Ram trucks equipped with the OEM 4-pole trailer connector, the blue brake output wire from the outlet under the dash simply ends in the engine compartment, and does not continue to the rear of the vehicle. You might be able to access the blue wire in the engine compartment, behind the drivers side wheel well. Look for a wire connector as shown in the

  • Troubleshooting Stoplight Circuit Wire of Brake Controller Wiring Not Functioning
  • Sounds like you have a blown CHMSL fuse in your 2009 Dodge Ram if the stoplight circuit of your brake controller wiring isn't functioning properly. Check the fuse box of your vehicle for that fuse (CHMSL stands for center high mount signal light). This is what powers the third brake light at the top of the cab of your truck. This circuit is connected to brake controller stoplight circuits often.

  • Unplugging a Brake Controller from a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500
  • On a brake controller wiring harness for your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, the end that plugs into the truck has a tab on one of the longer sides. This tab fits in a mating tab on the truck's connector. When installed, the tabs lock. On the brake controller end you can push down behind where the tab is and pull the connectors apart at the same time. It is possible that the tabs could be "seized" and you would need a small, flat blade screwdriver to apply some gentle prying force.

  • Where is the Brake Controller Plug on a 2008 Dodge Ram Pickup
  • I cannot be sure as to what the plug you have found is for but I can assure you it is not for a brake controller. The brake controller plug (if equipped) for a 2008 Dodge Ram is rectangular with four pins like the photo I have attached for you, there are no exceptions. If you just randomly look under the dash of your Ram, there are going to be several unused connectors. That is why it is important to look in the correct place which can be seen at the 0:50 mark in the attached video. This
