Trailer Brake Mounting Flanges are welded onto the end of the axle to provide a secure mounting location for the trailer brake assembly's backing plate. The different sizes accommodate the different axle diameters. Typically 2K trailer axles have a 1-3/4" axle diameter, 3K have a 2-3/8" diameter, while many 6K and 7K axles have a 3" diameter tube. The 3-1/2" diameter brake mounting flanges can be found on some heavy duty 6K and 7K axles, but are normally found on the 8K trailer axle.
