Expert Answers about Trailer Spindles

  • Process for Changing a Damaged Spindle on a Trailer Axle
  • Replacement of a spindle on a trailer axle is best left to a professional installer. This is not a do-it-yourself type of project. We urge you to use a professional welder experienced in axle fabrication. Proper alignment and welding are critical to safe operation of the trailer. Depending on the condition of the axle you may be better served by replacing the entire axle/spindle assembly. Although the axle adds to the parts cost, you will save on the labor side. A new axle with spindles will be

The Redline Spindle, part # SP204BT8, you have referenced is for 2,000-lb axles and the Redline Spindle, part # SP20484, is for 3,500-lb axles. They use different bearings and seals. I am including a link to a product page that will list the dimensions on the trailer spindles we have available. Square axles can be tough to determine capacity. • Determining the Capacity of a Square Trailer Axle
  • Square axles can be tough to determine capacity. Often times the same spindle fits a range of axle capacities. The best way to determine the capacity is to get the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the metal of the bearings. Going by those numbers, wheel size, and bolt pattern, we can determine the probable axle capacity. I have included some links that might help. There could also be a plate on the axle itself that lists the capacity. The most common place to find axle capacity is

  • How to Determine the Correct Replacement Hubs for a Tracker Marine Boat Trailer
  • What you are going to have to do is pull off one of the hubs, something you will have to do eventually any way, and get the inner and outer bearing numbers. The numbers are stamped into the metal of the bearings. With these numbers I can tell you exactly what you need as replacements. The wheel size and bolt pattern of the wheel will also help. I have included a link to a video that will help.

  • Is there Any Way to Determine the Trailer Bearing Measurements without Pulling the Hub
  • The short answer is that you cannot. You will need to pull the hub and get the numbers stamped into the bearings to find the correct replacements. It is possible that if you know the spindle part number and/or dimensions that you will be able to determine the seals that way. I also may be able to figure it out if I had the bolt pattern of the wheel, see link, and the axle capacity. The best way is to pull the hub. I have included a link to a video that might help. • Spindle Measurement of Part # SP20484
  • The F measurement is the length of the square portion of the spindle stub, which can either slide into the end of the axle and be plug welded in place or more commonly welded to the bottom of the axle tube. As long as the spindle is going on a 3500 lb axle and the rest of the dimensions match (B, C, D and E), it is not so important that the F dimension match perfectly, just as long as it is not dramatically shorter than the spindle it replaces.

  • How to Determine the Correct Replacement Hubs for a Trailer with a 3,500 Pound Axle

I suspect that you will have the Trailer Hub Assembly, # 84545UC1-EZ, which uses L68149 Inner/L44649 Outer bearings and E-Z lube axles. Or, for a hub and drum, # 84546UC3-EZ, which is the same but has the hub and drum for drum brakes. But, the best way to know is to check your bearing numbers. The other t
