Expert Answers about Hitch Bike Racks

  • How Many Bikes Can Be Transported with a Class I Hitch
  • The hitch manufacturers we carry list that with a Class I hitch you can only carry a max of 2 bikes. Like you stated, it's a combination of the additional weight of the additional bikes and the added leverage that weight puts on the hitch since it moved out much further. It may not seem like adding an additional lightweight bike would make a difference, but leverage is a powerful way to apply force. We realize that people are going to do whatever it is they want with their hitches and...

  • Recommended Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for 2004 Land Rover Range Rover Hauling 4 or 5 Bikes
  • Third time is a charm because I am going to give you the tools needed to choose the correct bike rack for your 2004 Land Rover Range Rover. You'll need to start by taking a quick measurement from the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper on your SUV. I have attached an article which will walk you through this. Once you have this measurement you can begin the search for a bike rack. You will want to choose one which has a greater distance from the hitch pin hole to the...

  • Swagman does not recommend using their G10, part # S64681 on the rear of a motorhome because the folding mechanism that allows the rack to fold up against the rear of the tow vehicle simply is not strong enough to deal with the additional jarring experienced when a rack is installed at the rear of a motor home or fifth wheel. The Pro Series Q Slot Bike Rack, part # PS63134 is our best selling rack that would work great on your motorhome. This rack is highly rated by our customers, and...

  • Can a 110 Pound Ice Cream Trike be Carried on a 2007 Toyota Corolla LE
  • Since the trailer hitches for your 2007 Toyota Corolla are all Class I there isn't going to be a hitch mounted option that will work. Even with a higher Class hitch the trike carriers are not rated for more than 100 pounds. The best solution I can offer is to put the ice cream trike on a small utility trailer and tow it. I can offer everything but the trailer. For a trailer hitch I recommend Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 60345 since it comes with the correct ball mount. For a 1-7/8 inch...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Carrier for 4 Bikes on a 2004 Jeep Liberty with Rear Spare Tire
  • The Thule T2 bike carrier # TH916XTR-918XTR is a great option for the 2004 Jeep Liberty. The Liberty will need to have a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver opening to be able to use this carrier. It measures 19 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest rail on the carrier so it should clear the spare tire with ease. If the trailer hitch has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening then you will need to use a hanging style carrier as there are no 4-bike platform style carriers designed...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Carrier that is Easy to Install for a 2013 Honda CR-V
  • If your 2013 Honda CR-V has a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch I recommend the Kuat Beta, # B202-114. This carrier will be very easy to put in the hitch or remove because it weighs only 12-3/5 pounds. To use it in a 2 inch hitch you would also need shank adapter # D101. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level...

  • Bike Carrier for Factory Trailer Hitch with Shallow Receiver on a 2015 Toyota Highlander

When you are measuring the depth of the receiver opening are you measuring on the inside or outside of the receiver? If the receiver is only 1-3/8 inches deep from the center of the pin hole to the backstop inside the receiver then that would be a problem. But if the distance is at least 1-1/2...

Although the Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2 Bike Rack, # SA4025, is a great bike bike, the Kuat Sherpa, # S101, just seems to be built to higher quality standards. • Why Can Only 2 Bikes Be Carried on a Class I Trailer Hitch
  • On a Class I trailer hitch you are limited to 2 bikes but it isn't because of the weight, it is the distance that weight is from the receiver. A third or more bikes are too far from the receiver and it produces more leverage than the hitch and where it is attached on the vehicle can handle. Its the same principle as using a long wrench to loosen a lug nut. To carry 3 bikes on your 2015 Toyota Prius II you can use a trunk mount carrier such as # TH911XT. It will work with models that...

Due to the size of the square tubing, the shank of the carrier wouldn't fit in the bike rack. A bike rack set-up like the Hollywood Racks # HR1400-85 IS an excellent idea, but if you take a close look at the specifications, when used with the bike rack the cargo tray will be limited to a 90 lb weight capacity (which isn't much). It sounds like you might need to tighten your hitch bolt more to get it to prevent movement. I attached a review video for this rack that shows how the hitch pin works. For a locking hitch pin for your rack that also works as an anti-rattle device you would want the part...

Any bike carrier used on a front mount receiver has the potential to block the view of the driver some, restrict air flow to the engine, and could block the front lights when bikes are loaded. The air flow restriction is probably not a concern but you would want to keep an eye on the temperature gauge just to be sure. Driver visibility will be restricted as if the front end of the vehicle was longer...
