Location of Center of Hide-A-Goose Gooseneck Ball on a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71- First, on a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500, you would need to use # 9465-54. The installation kit for the hitch your referenced is not designed for the 1500. For 9465-54 the measurement is 44-3/4 inches from the rear edge of the bed forward. See instructions link. The ball should be centered in most every case either directly above the rear axle or a few inches in front of the rear axle. Any further back than this and the truck will ride high in the front causing steering and braking problems.

He tells me that housing around the socket for the gooseneck ball will essentially be flush if your bed has a spray-in bed liner. If you do not have a spray-in liner, the housing will extend about 3/16 to 1/4 inch above the bed.
Keep in mind that the pucks for the Elite fifth wheel hitch will extend about 1/2 inch into the bed.

It is a custom fit hitch for your truck and will not require you to drill the frame. You will still need to drill or cut the bed for the ball and safety chain loops. Gooseneck Hitch Installation Location on a 2003 Chevrolet 2500 HD 2WD 6 Foot Bed- When installing the CURT Double Lock, Flip and Store Gooseneck Hitch, item # C600-652, the center of the ball will be installed at 44-1/4 inches from the rear or the bed and centered between the wheel wells. The center of the ball should end up around 1-1/2 inches forward of the center of the rear axle.
The ball position can be slightly adjusted by loosening the mounting hardware but the size of the hole cut in the bed for the hitch ball would need to be enlarged to do this.
