Expert Answers about Tires and Wheels

  • Easiest Way to Determine Weight Capacity of a 3 Axle Trailer
  • That depends on a few things. However, the easiest way to determine the capacity of a trailer is to check the plaque or sticker that should be near the coupler of the trailer. There should be the capacity of the trailer and the axles listed there. The size tires you have should also have plenty of weight capacity, but you will want to make sure they are inflated to their maximum psi rating to ensure the highest capacity and for the best tire wear possible. You should check the condition of y

  • The F65-14ST trailer tire is a comparable size to the ST205/65-14 size. However we do not carry either tire size at this time. The closest tire size we have is the ST205/75-14, like the item you selected, Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1ST86. • What is the Speed Rating for Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 205/65-10
  • The trailer tires that we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall. A thicker sidewall can generate more heat but an under inflated thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat and cause a tire to fail. Trailer tire # AM1HP50 should be inflated to 35 psi. Having a trailer low to the ground makes the center of gravity lower and could be beneficial and lessening th

  • Why is the Wheel on the Kenda 5.70-8 Wheel and Tire Combo Rated Lower than the Tire
  • On the Kenda 5.70-8 Tire and Wheel Combo, # AM30153, Kenda uses a load range D tire because the 8-ply load range D tires have a stronger construction than 6-ply load range C tire. Even though there is a higher rated tire on the wheel, the maximum weight capacity is still only 910 lbs. You will just get a stronger tire with this combination that will last longer than a load range C tire. Unfortunately, we do not carry an 8 inch wheel and tire combo with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern that has a weight

  • Will Going to a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Increase the Weight Capacity of the Trailer
  • No, adding a higher capacity trailer tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer UNLESS the tires you have are rated lower than the axle capacity. A trailers weight capacity is set by the axle so that is what you will be limited to. If you check the trailer tongue or frame, somewhere there should be a plate or sticker that lists the axle capacity. If you cannot find this information then it may be on the axle itself. If you still cannot find it there then you will need to pull off a hu

  • How Much Taller is a 5.30-12 Trailer Tire Compared to a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire
  • For a 4.80-12 trailer tire, the overall diameter or height is 20.5 inches. For a 5.30-12 it is 21.9 inches. That is a difference of 1.4 inches but you will only see half of that, 0.7 inches, in added height. Please keep in mind that going to a taller tire will raise the center of gravity of the trailer and can lead to the increased likelihood of sway. Going up 0.7 inches may not be much of a factor but you will just need to be aware of the possibility. Also, the 5.30 tire will be 1/2 inch

  • What is the Backspacing of the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20352

I determined this by taking the wheel width (5-1/2 inches) adding 1 inch for both wheel lips (6.5) and then dividing that by 2 to give the backspacing of 3-1/4 inches. This is what the formula would look like. (5.5+1)/2=3.25 I attached an FAQ on trailer wheels and tires for you to check out also.

This means the mounting surface of the wheel is set 5 mm to the outside of the wheel from the zero offset mark or moves the tire closer to the center of the trailer. This wheel has 3-1/2 inches of back spacing at the zero offset mark which translates to 88.9 mm. Because it has a 5 mm positive offset you will add 5 to 88.9 which is 93.5 or 3.68 inches. • What is the Speed Rating for a Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire
  • All of the trailer tires that we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour. Since a higher speed will produce more heat, it is not advised to go more than 65 on a trailer tire. Heat buildup is the main cause of tire failure. Trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. The thicker sidewall generates more heat. The faster a tire is spinning, the more friction there will be and that will lead to excess heat. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.
