The capacity of a winch diminishes as more cable is spooled onto it. The winch has a 1000 lb capacity with one layer of cable on the spool, and the capacity is reduced to 500 lbs once the entire 50 feet of cable is wrapped around the drum. The 500 lb minimum capacity is plenty for the 300 lb weight you mentioned.
