Today were going to take a quick look at the Dutton Lainson hand winch, part number DL16003. Now, this winch is built in the USA and is covered by a 5 year limited warranty. It has a 400lb. capacity and its got a 1:1 gear ratio. Now, included with the winch is a nylon strap that measures 12 ft. long and theres also a 1 inch by 18 inch hand loop at the end for pulling the strap out.
Its a ratcheting handle system so as we pull the handle it will tighten our winch but it works in a ratcheting mechanism. Now, to release the handle we can flip up this trigger and the handle is disengaged from the gear on our winch spool. Inside the winch is a release here on the lock. We flip this down and we can pull our strap out. We flip it up it engages and locks the strap from coming out but we can ratchet it back in.
The handle up here is so you can easily get a hold of the strap and pull it out when youre hooking up before youre ready to winch. Its small size makes it a perfect application for personal water craft trailers. The base here measures about 3-1/2 inches long by about 3 inches wide. Theres a slotted hole and a round hole for your mounting hardware. Now, its finished in a zinc plating to help protect against corrosion.
Inside, underneath the strap is a hub drum diameter of 5/8 of an inch. Again its a 400 lb. weight rating on it so you want to use this only for light weight applications. And thats it for a quick look at the Dutton Lainson hand winch part number DL16003.

Just got my DL16003 winch, and I've very satisfied. I have a 9 ft plastic bass boat that weighs out over 200 lbs with gear, on an 8 ft tilting utility trailer. My goal was to be able to retrieve the boat from a launch ramp by myself - 63 years old with a bad back. I had my doubts this 1:1 winch would do it, with no mechanical advantage to speak of. I'm barely able to haul the boat up onto the trailer with a heavy line on the bow. That wasn't going to work in the long run, so I thought I'd give the winch a try. No doubt an 8:1 crank winch would do it, but I'd have to build a raised mount for the handle to swing 360 degrees. I was able to mount the DL16003 on the trailer bed, it fits snugly against the boat bow when loaded. For a test, I tilted the trailer and slid the boat off the trailer in the driveway, hooked of the winch strap and hauled away on the winch lever. I was able to one-handed drag the boat up the trailer with the winch without strain, so it's a success!79806
I took the boat out to a local lake and retrieved it no problem. Again, recommended!

The winch on my wave runner trailer was broken and I could not find where to buy parts. I found the DL16003 on the etrailer website. It looked similar to mine. The base bracket on my trailer is built in, but the reel, handle and lock mechinism looked very similar. I took a chance and bought the DL 16003 winch. Etrailers service and quick response was very good, via email I knew the status of my order at all times. The winch came with instructions and explode out view of the parts. With four wrenches (two 7/16 and two 1/2) I was able to easily remove parts for the new Winch base bracket and install them on my old bracket. The new product appears to be sturdier than the OLD and I expect years of good service.23524

This product is perfect for the application I needed. It didn't have to winch a ton, but I had limited space and was not able to get a 360 degree type winch. The quality seems good and it does the job I need it to do.6565
