Creating a kayak-carrying system for your truck is easy with this unique kit. First, slide the Extend-A-Truck load extender into your hitch in the upright position. Then adjust the extender vertically so that it matches the height of your roof. To install the rooftop crossbar, simply set the bar and roof-rack feet in place on your roof and secure the strap inside your vehicle with the included cambuckle.

Place the sturdy, non-scratch foam block across the top crossbar of the load extender to create a safe and secure cradle for your boat to sit in. The wide cutout on the bottom of the block allows it to fit securely over the crossbar. The foam block will fit over the rooftop crossbar as well, so you can purchase another to ensure that both ends of your kayak are cradled by protective foam during transport.

My kayak carrier arrived within 5 days of my order, in perfect condition. Because I had researched various options, I was aware of how this device was structured, and there were no surprises. I put it all together in about 6 minutes, and had my kayak mounted and ready for a 1 hr drive to Cape Anne MA within another 10 minutes. (advice: you should either mount the included foam cushion up front, and figure out how to cushion the rear of your kayak, or simply order an extra bolster for the rear of the kayak support.) For short hauls, I've used the rear mount WITHOUT any extra strapping to guard against right-left wobble, and it's not a problem. For longer hauls, the brace to bumper strapping is probably a good idea. All in all, I considered many homemade options before I found this product, and in the end this has proved to be the best option. Convenient, not terribly expensive, and very sturdy! And by the way, the reason I'm not attaching a photo -- the thing is in the back of my truck right now, because I use it frequently. It assembles/disassembles so quickly that I only use it when I need it. When on the truck it looks exactly like the photos! 143527

The Darby Extend a Truck kayak carrier arrived quickly via free standard shipping after a personalized courtesy email from eTrailer thanking me for the purchase. I bought this to haul my 13' Hobie Mirage Revolution, and I was surprised at how simple it was to put up. The included single bar roof rack (Turbo Rack) was essential to evenly distribute the front end weight and avoid roof damage on my Tacoma pickup. Although I'm just somewhat disappointed that the hauler doesn't fit snugly into the 2" hitch, it allows only minimal movement during transport and hasn't impacted safety in any way I can see. And I had no issues using a couple of tie-downs to secure the rack to the truck to minimize swaying, one to secure the back end of the kayak to the rack and one to secure the front. I've only had this for a few days but immediately hauled my kayak to and from a service dealer with no issues. I've been looking for something like this for a couple of years and highly recommend this for hauling kayaks. Next up...extending at bed level to haul other stuff, too! 78862

Product arrived promptly and packaged well with great instructions. Product works as described and is perfect for my situation. E-trailer followed up with in regards to delivery and satisfaction with product! Not may companies do this! Photos show how well this works for my kayak or any number of other situations, especially since the rack will rotate to carry lumber and such. 94621

I've gotta say that the pictures, videos, questions and answers about this product are 100% accurate, and very helpful! I recommend you view them all. My comments are focused on etrailer.com. I have rarely seen such a well run, organized and responsive site! When have you ever asked a question on a site, and gotten an emailed response while you are still surfing the web? Gotta love that. After researching what was available (that's what WE ALL DO, RIGHT?) I decided I wanted the Darby Extend-a-truck kayak carrier system. Since Christmas was coming, I mentioned my choice to my very generous sister-in-law, who gave it to me as a gift. Unfortunately, she purchased the components from a different site. Even after returning her purchase, and paying return freight, it was cheaper on etrailer.com! Ordered Christmas morning and delivered on January 2nd. From now on, etrailer will be the first place I go. 167663

Texas coast, I needed some sort of way to carry my yak with my truck having a bed cover on it at the same time. This carrier works awesome, I know some of yall are thinking i wonder if it works. Well it does pretty good too. The roof carrier works great and the truck doors close flush as if the strap wasn't attached. And there isn't any leakage if it was to rain. I also pull a travel trailer so this carrier hooks into my front bumper and I am able to carry it that way as well. If you have any concerns about this product, don't because Im pleased with it and it does its job. 87818

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

I received the load extender in the 3-day window promised (which I paid for) and it has the features that I think will work fine. The square tubing construction is substantial enough and fits my Class 3 trailer hitch nicely. I recently sold my 10 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee and replaced it with a smaller SUV with way better gas mileage and generally lower cost of ownership. But one big feature that I missed from the Jeep was the ability to slap small loads of lumber and sheet goods on the roof rack. My SUV's rack is too small. This extender effectively enlarges my carrying capacity and, while I have not yet used it due to a stretch of wet weather, I suspect it will only take a couple of minutes to mount and secure when needed. I think perhaps for the money a couple of tie-downs could have been included but overall this will do the job. 61661

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

The extendatruck hitch is a helpful piece of equipment - solidly constructed and very easy to install. Note you do need to guy it down to the truck with ropes when using in the top-carrier position or it will rattle like crazy - I would not want to be traveling anywhere unless the unit's crossbars were tied. That said, I used it to carry a heavy fishing kayak for 250 miles over a pickup bed to cushion the ropes/tie-downs against the truck lest you end up with rub-marks on your vehicle. Works awesome in the lay-down mode. very quick to tie a kayak down and launch in prepped position. 50672

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

My problem was how to transport securely my 16' kayak in the 6.5' bed of my Toyota Tundra. Tne Darby "Extend-A-Truck" concept appealed to me and since the price was very reasonable, it was Made in USA and shipping paid, I bought one and it has proven to be "just what I needed". My kayak loads easily, is safe when mounted (I taped a 4' length of foam pipe insulation over the Extend-A-Truck" crosspiece to protect the hull) and is very secure in transit. I am very glad I bought this product. 159075

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

Wish the fit was more snug where it goes into the hitch. It is certainly strong enough for all I want to do just a little wobbly. Would be good to have several holes for the pins where it attaches to the hitch this would probably make it more stable if it had more settings to allow it to go further into the hitch. I may drill another hole myself. Heavy duty is what I'd call it without the pretentious price of Thule and other high priced racks. Meets my needs and exceeded my expectations! Highly recommend this product! Thanks! - Jerry 134130

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

I have been looking for a way to transport a canoe that I recently obtained. My truck has a shell on the bed and wind deflectors around the cab side windows which makes it difficult in working out a way to carry the canoe. This eliminates any traditional hard mounts. I put a receiver hitch on the truck to use the Extend-A-Truck rack for the rear support. Utilizing canoe foam blocks on the cab and appropriate tiedowns as well as other supports, this arrangement should work fine. Just waiting for the time to use it. 144831

I used my load extender yesterday and it worked GREAT.. Very easy to install (using the 2 pins included).. The material is nice and heavy so I wasn't worried about the weight of the load, and I could still raise the tanneau cover and get to the tools in the bed of my truck, even with the ladder still in the rack.. I'm sure I'll be using the rack alot more now that I have it... Great product for the price and I would highly recommend it.. 109182

I recently bought a small SUV after my pick up truck stopped running. I needed a way to haul small quantities of 2X4 Lumber, and 4X8 sheet material on top of my roof rack. This roof extender seems to be the perfect hitch accessory available at the right price!. I got free shipping when I bought a few more accessory items. Everything was delivered quickly and appears to be constructed well. Overall a great value. Thanks! 8691

Review from a similar Darby Extend-A-Truck in Watersport Carriers

I received my "T-bar" as a Christmas present 4 years ago and have used it dozens of times since to haul canoes with. It was, without a doubt, one of the most useful gifts I have ever gotten! So much so that I gave my son-in-law one for his first Christmas gift from me and am purchasing another one to give as a birthday present to the person who gave me mine. Can't think of a better way to say thank you than that! 13881

Great product and easy to use - installs in a few minutes. Only two pieces to the rack so I can store it out of the way under the back seat of my truck when not in use. I would recommend getting the pad that is custom made to go with the rack to keep your canoe or kayak cushioned when on the rack. The width of the rack allows you to fit two kayaks side by side which was a big plus for me. 151961

Great extender but take note I bought this to use with a canoe in the bed. It works great for that - strong, easy to load, I love it for what it does. Very worth the money. One thing to note about the description, though, is that the L piece does NOT fit in the cab of my truck. It's too long to fit behind the seat in my 2008 Tacoma Access cab. Other than that I love the thing. 3071

Not too sure if this is going to work. I have a 24 ft. rowing shell so the rack will not work when the boat is in the bed of the truck but should be OK with the boat on the roof. It's Spring and I have to unwrap the boat and try out the rack. If the rowing shell is too long I know it will be perfect for my Kayack Either way, the rack is made very well 74914

Delivered quickly and the product was as expected. Hauled a bed of 16' lumber as well electric conduit thus far. The "tail" could be a little tighter in the hitch. The "flag" is just a plastic sheet which didn't survive the first trip. No big deal but,I suggest you eliminate it from the package. I will shop etrailer.com again for my future needs. 158474

Seems to be a good product, minimal sway when anchored as suggested. Does the job as a rear kayak mounting point. The only note is that it will not fit a Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited without airing down or removing the spare. If the pin location was 1/2 inch farther back it would work perfectly. 122061

  • You may be able to use the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier, # DTA944-968-924, to carry both kayaks at once, but you will want to make sure that the kayaks will fit on the crossbars of this system. The hitch mounted extension has a 48 inch wide crossbar. With your kayaks placed side by side, you will want to make sure the bows or sterns will fit on a 48 inch wide crossbar. Also, the distance between the hitch mounted extension and the roof crossbar will be the length of your truck bed...

  • Will Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 Work on F-150 With Canopy
  • You can check compatibility of the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 with your truck canopy by measuring from the top of your receiver tube to the top of the canopy at the rear of the truck. The carrier's height is adjustable from 53-3/8 - 60-3/8-inches, so if this height range will allow it to clear your canopy you are all set. A video for this carrier is linked for your review. If you'd like to lock the carrier to your hitch you can use # 7683 from DeadBolt and to...

  • Canoe Carrier Option for a 2014 Ram 1500 with Ram Boxes
  • I have a solution for you, but we do not carry any ladder racks that will fit with the Ram boxes. Instead, I recommend looking at the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier with Hitch Mount Load Extender, # DTA944-968-924. This system comes with a single-bar roof rack that mounts on the top of your cab and it has a hitch mounted load extender that will allow you to carry the canoe above the cab just like a ladder rack. I have attached a demonstration video for you to check out.

  • Can Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 be used on 2012 Ford F-150 Crew Cab
  • As long as your 2012 Ford F-150 Crew Cab is equipped with a 2 inch hitch and has a bare roof, you shouldn't have any problems hauling a 15 foot kayak using the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier with Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack, # DTA944-968-924. The universal-fit, round crossbar mounts to your vehicle's bare roof to support your canoe or kayak and is adjustable from 45 to 60 inches. Please keep in mind the roof capacity of your F-150 when loading any cargo....

  • Could 2 Kayaks be Carried on the Darby Watersport Carriers # DTA944-968-924
  • That would depend on the width of your two kayaks. The width of the upright hitch bar of the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924 is 48 inches. If the width of your 2 kayaks side by side is less than that you should be good. This comes with foam block, which for two kayaks you would want a total of four of the part # DTA924. For additional straps you could get the part # Y04057.

  • How Does the Crossbar of the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 Secure to Roof
  • The strap that holds the cross bar of the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 to the roof of your vehicle runs through the interior of your vehicle and tightens inside of the vehicle. It would not interfere with your windows or door operations. To see exactly how it tightens check out the video I attached.

  • Will Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier # Y04069 Fit 1999 Dodge Durango SLT with Factory Rails
  • The Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier # Y04069 mounts to most factory and aftermarket roof rack crossbars thanks to its adjustable mounting brackets. If your Durango SLT has factory crossbars whose dimensions do not exceed 3-1/2 x 3-1/2-inches then this canoe carrier will fit just fine. For a canoe over 14-feet it is recommended that your crossbar spread be approximately 30-inches to ensure stability while underway. If you do not have crossbars (only the side rails) you'll first...

  • Availability of Watersport Carrier for 2012 Nissan Frontier with Utili-Trac System
  • You are correct that there are no ladder racks available at this time for short-bed Nissan trucks with the Utili-Trac system. I do have a solution for you though. If your Nissan Frontier has a 2" trailer hitch receiver, you can use the Darby Extend-A-Truck Watersport Carrier part # DTA944-968-924 to transport your canoe. The Extend-A-Truck load extender includes a single roof rack bar and is an economically priced load-carrying alternative that fits multiple cargo applications. I...

  • Stand-Up Paddleboard Recommendation for a 2011 Jeep Liberty to Clear Roof Antenna
  • If your 2011 Jeep Liberty has a trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver, then you could use the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier and Single-Bar Roof Rack, # DTA944-968-924, but you will likely have to carry your stand up paddleboard at an angle to clear your antenna. A better option for you would be the Thule SUP Taxi Stand-Up Paddleboard Carrier, # TH810XT, and the Thule AeroBlade Crossroad Roof Rack, which consists of the 53 Inch Thule AeroBlade Load Bars, # THARB53, and the Rapid...

  • Kayak/Canoe Carrying Options for 2009 Honda Pilot with Naked Roof
  • Vehicles with a naked roof like your 2009 Honda Pilot can be equipped for transporting a canoe or kayak in several ways, one of which is the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924. The main advantages of this item are that it includes everything you need (hitch-mount load bar, roof cross bar and foam block) and that it allows for a good part of the canoe's or kayak's weight to be borne by the hitch-mounted load extender rather than the Pilot's roof. You also then have the additional...

  • Recommended Receiver Hitch Adapter and Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for a 2009 Honda Civic
  • I recommend the hitch adapter # HTAD as it will convert your 1-1/4 inch receiver to a 2-inch receiver. You will then be able to use a Extend-A-Truck kayak carrier like # DTA944-968-924. Please take into consideration that the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be reduced by 50 percent with use of adapter. This is because the hitch adapter moves the load out farther from your vehicle, applying more leverage to your hitch. The bike rack I recommend is the Thule Helium Aero #...

  • Thule Goal Post and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for Chevy Equinox and Silverado
  • If you wanted to use a J style kayak carrier with a T bar like the Darby Extend-a-Truck Kayak Carrier part # DTA944-968-924 you would need to use a Thule Goal Post part # TH997 instead. The Darby is not compatible with any of the J-style carriers we offer due to the crossbar design of the carrier. For a J style carrier to work with the Goal Post you would want the Thule Hull a Port part # TH834. If you follow the link I attached you will be able to enter the year/make/model of your...
