Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Installation - 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Alright, today in this 2004 Chevrolet Silverado we're going to install part number F2250 from Firestone. We're going to start off with the passenger's side and complete the installation and then repeat the same steps on the driver's side. We'll take one of the air springs and first install the upper bracket. Since we're doing the passenger's side we'll install the heat shield for the exhaust. That will get sandwiched between the spring and hot plate. This is not required for the driver's side.

And on one side of the bracket there's a 3/8 x1-1/2 long hex bolt that we have to install first before we can install the bracket and it gets trapped. And once the bracket is installed on the one side you cannot install the bolt. We'll attach it with two locking flange nuts then we'll go ahead and install the lower bracket on the other side of the air spring. Now with everything loosely assembled we'll go ahead and put it into place on the axle and the frame and we'll see where we need to orient the heat shield. The shield should be angled downwards towards the side of the air spring closest to the exhaust to protect our spring.

We'll make a mark on it to put it in its proper spot. We'll go ahead and take it back down. And then we'll go ahead and install the elbow fitting. And then we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts for the top plate. And we're going to leave the bottom half loose.

Alright, at this point we can go ahead and start installing the air spring for good. We'll go ahead and reinstall it and we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts that go through the frame. We'll install the large flat washers and then we'll go ahead and put the flange nuts on top. We'll go ahead and attach the U bolt that is on it sideways. This goes around the spring stack.

We'll be attaching it with a nut on each side. Once we have the U bolt going from the side installed, we'll make sure that the bottom plate is pushed up against the springs and the air spring is in a straight line. Then we go ahead and attach a hardware for the bottom plate to the axle. We'll leave everything loose for now and make sure everything is in a straight line. With one final check we'll go ahead and tighten down all our hardware, start from the top and work our way down to the bottom. We'll make sure we tighten down the bolt at the center of the bracket that goes to the center of the air spring. Now we'll go ahead and drill out a hole in our bumper for air line fitting. We'll measure up about 3/4-inch in the bottom of the plastic then we'll go ahead and drill out a hole. We'll start with a pilot hole and then work away to a 5/16th stitch. Then we go ahead and install our fitting. We'll install it from the back using a flat washer, put through a hole and install another flat stainless steel washer and then tighten down the nut. Fitting is installed and all we got to do is run our air line tubing. To install our air line tubing we'll go ahead and make sure we have a square cut on the end and simply just push it to the fitting going into the elbow of the air bag. Okay, we'll go ahead and take our air line and run it over the hat channels inaudible and back to our air line fitting. And once again we'll cut it to length and install the tube fitting. We're using zip ties to secure the air line and basically we're finished with our install. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver's side except we don't have to worry about the exhaust. With both sides installed we can go ahead and apply air to them and see how they work and also check for air leaks. And with that that will finish it for our install of part number F2250 from Firestone on our 2004 Chevrolet Silverado .

It took two of us two hours to install. I would recommend using two people for install. I put a tee in the two airlines to inflate them at the same time. The friend that helped install these has this brand on his truck and he said it made a world of difference in his towing.55831

Was concerned if thls kit would fit a 2010 Silverado 2500 HD Quad cab with 6.5 ft. bed with a B&W fifth wheel turn over ball hitch. It took me 2.5 hours and every thing fit perfect. No problem with the instructions dead on, and the only holes I had to drill was in the rear bumper for the air fittings. Have had them on since November no air leaks or problems. This make my truck ride excellent with my toy hauler and other gooseneck trailer I have. Alot cheeper than a air pin box and does the same thing,no more chucking and bouncing. thanks7291

  • Does the Capacity of Suspension Air Springs Exceed the Payload of a 2009 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
  • I do not want to question the owners manual of your 2009 Chevy Silverado, but 2,500 pounds payload capacity sounds awful low. Especially for a 2500HD Duramax diesel. I did some research and found that it should have a payload ranging from 3,481 pounds up to as much as 3,924 pounds. I would call a dealership and have them run the VIN to determine what the payload is. If it ends up being closer to what I found, then the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, # F2250, would be beneficial. These
