Video Transcript for Thule Passage 3 Bike Rack Review

today we're going to taking a look at the Thule Passage. This is a trunk mounted 3 bike rack, part number on it is TH911XT. The Passage uses Thule's fit dial technology. This makes it easily customizable to fit a very wide range of vehicles. As you can see the cradle arms can be stored in the downward position for convenience and then simply rotate it up and into position when we're ready to use them. Each set of cradles has the anti-sway technology designed in.

That way we're going to help to prevent or reduce the bike to bike contact, or bike to vehicle contact. Now that we've gone over some of the key features of the Passage, let's show you how it installs on the vehicle. The first step is going to be to set our fit dial. For our Nissan today, we need to be on number 9. Just refer to Thule's website or their fit guide for more details on the number specific to your vehicle. The first thing we'll do is remove the black wing nuts. They've got a bolt attached to them that goes right through the fit dial.

Then we'll rotate it up to the number 9. Once we have it in the appropriate position, we'll put that wing nut back in and snug it down. Per the fit guide, the lower set of pads should be resting directly on top of our bumper. It's a nice, thick, soft pad. This is on the lower arm and the upper arm.

It's going to help protect your vehicles finish and paint surfaces. We'll place that right onto the top edge of the bumper. Just rotate the rack up to our glass. We're then going to take our top hooks, connect them in the connection point between the roof line and the rear hatch where they come together. We'll work our way all the way around the rack. We've got 6 hooks to connect.

All the hooks have a nice rubber coated finish on them. Again, just like those pads, it's going to help protect your vehicle's surface and keep you from getting scratches and stuff. Now the straps, we're just going to snug them up for now, just to hold the rack in place until we get everything set and we can tighten them down finally. Now with all 6 of our hooks in place, we're going to go around and tighten up each strap just a little bit at a time until we have it nice and secure. With our straps secure, as you can see we've got the rack really attached to our car nicely, we'll just tidy up our excess strap. We're now ready to load up our bikes. We'll rotate the cradle arms up into position. We'll undo our cradle straps. Each cradle has 3 channels or grooves in the bottom of it. It's going to help to accommodate any of the brake lines that we may have. It also has a nice, strong, durable rubber strap that's going to help securely hold the bike in place. The cradles themselves are made of a softer, rubber, plastic material. It's going to help to protect the bike's frame. As we load up the bike we want the down tube to be on the same side as our anti-sway cradle. Once we have it resting in our 2 cradles, we'll simply come through and secure it with our straps. For the women's style frame, we did use the Thule bike adapter bar. This is part number TH982XT. Now we'll take the extra strap that comes provided with the rack. We're going to run it through the frames of our bike. This kind of helps connect the frame of the bike rack with the frames of our bike for just an extra level of security. We'll just cinch that down. With that secure, we're ready to hit the road. With our rack loaded to capacity, we're going to take it through our test course so you can see what it looks like in action. We'll first go through our slalom course which will simulate every day turning side to side. We'll go through our alternating bumps which will simulate the twisting effect we get on potholes and uneven roads. Then through our regular speed bumps so you can see how that rack moves up and down. That will complete today's review of the Thule Passage, part number TH911XT. .

Great value that meets my needs to haul 3 bikes on back of my SUV. I did not want to have a hitch installed solely to mount a bike carrier so this makes sense. Product was delivered and within 15 mins I had it assembled and was driving to the bike shop. All the clips that mount to the rear hatch are coated so no concern over scratching. All but the bottom 2 clips slide in with the hatch shut; the bottom two requiring opening the hatch and shutting to get them in.....a little cumbersome but still just a few seconds to take care of. The bike rack hangs far enough out so the bike closest to the car is still 6" away from bumper. But, when braking, the bike does swing forward and hit the rear bumper. Positioning the pedals to avoid having one aim square at the bumper helped. This may be a common issue on this kind of rack; it was not something I experienced on an older spare tire mounted rack where the bike was snug up to the spare so no swaying. All in all a quality rack that is sturdy when mounted and comes on and off with ease. 180483

I was convinced I was going to have to install a hitch, and purchase a hitch bike rack for my 2011 Ford Edge. I was searching on Google "One last time" Not only did I find one. But you had SEVERAL options! And, you didn't stop there. Even videos on how to. Who does that?! As a mom of two, who's husband works out of state, I really thank you. I received the rack last night. Dropped my 3 and 5 year olds off at day care, came home. Easy installation. Got a ride in! And a full day stuff done. I really thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. 179167

It's very good overall, but if you take it on a longer trip or on bumpier roads, expect to make some stops to tighten the straps. It fits mine and my wife's bikes fine, but we have yet to find a way to fit my daughter's 20" bike on here, even using the adapter bar (sold separately). We're using it on an Outback wagon because we don't have a trailer hitch. When we trade this in for a newer model we will be getting a trailer hitch and springing for one of the bike racks that will fit with it. 193861

This bike rack is a Christmas gift for our daughter, so I am unable to report on it. Based on other reviews, I am sure she will be delighted. As for the experience with etrailer, I could not be more happy. Your representative was very prompt in responding to my two messages prior to the order, and provided excellent information. After I placed the order, your package was on my doorstep within 48 hours. I will not hesitate to order from etrailer for any future needs. Thank you. 61636

Really easy to install, fits nice on a Volt if you add a little padding (neoprane or a folded towel works) under the lower arm to avoid rubbing the bumper. Use it all the time on multiple vehicles. I do use the Swagman arm on the women's bike so it sits level, without it the bike rides a little too low. 213554

I would class this product excellent except for the difficulty I had assembling it. One of the arms required excessive effort to install..Other than that it is well designed and well made.I have yet to actually use it but all indications are that it will perform as promised 80247

The straps don't seem to get as tight as I would think they need to be without throwing off the way it sits, but it works great on the back of our Chevy Cruze! Solid construction for sure. Definitely recommend for those without a hitch. 189863

This rack was very easy to install on my Chevy traverse. Some people may be concerned about the spoiler being pulled apart, but if you follow the directions this should never happen. Make sure you adjust your dial to the correct number. 140796

I have a Buick Enclave 2012. The place that you have to put the upper straps on this bike rack is made of plastic on this vehicle. There is NO WAY I would attach this and expect it to hold without warping or damaging the car. 129368

Thank you for purchasing this Thule product. I can understand you apprehension about mounting this carrier to your vehicle. Thule performs extensive testing on all of the vehicles we fit and we are confident, that if the fitting instructions are followed properly, that this carrier will work well with your vehicle. Thank you!

I have a 2003 Ford Escape and it fit perfectly! East to use and my bike is safe and secure. The only thing was it was recommended that I buy an extra bar if I had a girls bike - this was not needed for the kind of bike I have. 84003

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2010 Honda Odyssey
  • The best option would be to install a hitch and use a hitch mounted bike rack. For a hitch I would recommend you get a Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 87479. I attached installation instructions and an installation video for you to check out also. I also attached a link to a page that shows all of the different bike racks we offer that will fit on this hitch. I wish there was a trunk mounted bike rack I could recommend for your 2010 Honda Odyssey but I checked all of the rack manufacturers...

  • How To Carry 4 Bikes On a 2013 Toyota Prius
  • The trailer hitches that are available for the 2013 Toyota Prius are all Class I trailer hitches. The Thule Apex # TH9025 will fit a Class I trailer hitch but you will be limited to a maximum of 2 bikes because of the Class I trailer hitch. The restriction is because Class I hitches cannot handle the extra weight of a third or more bikes that far from the receiver. It is like using a cheater bar to loosen a lug nut on a wheel. There is too much torque with more than 2 bikes. There...

  • Bike Rack Options To Carry 4 Bicycles On My 2005 Volvo XC90
  • The most amount of bikes you can carry with a trunk mounted bike rack on your 2005 Volvo XC90 is 3, as this is as much as your vehicle can handle safely. You would have to carry the other bike on the roof of your vehicle if you choose to use a trunk mounted bike rack. The item you selected, Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH911XT, is compatible with your vehicle and would be a good option as it features anti-sway cradles. Another 3 bike trunk mounted bike rack I would recommend is...

  • Will the Thule Passage 3 Bike Rack # TH911XT Fit a 2008 Lexus RX350
  • As long as there is an open space at the top of that rear spoiler for the mounting strap to pass through and attach to the edge of the rear hatch, the rack is capable of being installed on the vehicle. (Rather than the straps passing up and over the spoiler). This being said, Thule states that the hatch on the RX350 is not strong enough to accommodate the weight of the carrier plus three bikes, although using the two bike model, # TH910XT is acceptable. To carry three bikes, a hitch...

  • Recommendation for 2 Bike Rack To Fit a 2011 Honda Insight
  • I would say that the Yakima KingJoe Pro rack, item # Y02625, that you mentioned would be the best choice for your vehicle. Yakima recommends this rack for your vehicle and notes that the glass hatch hooks are to be used in place of the upper straps. Yakima physically tests their racks on the vehicles they recommend them for. The Thule Passage, # TH911XT, rack is recommended by Thule, but does not include a glass hatch hook like the Yakima rack does, so I would vote for the Yakima rack...

  • Lockable Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendations for 2015 Honda Civic
  • The easiest to use trunk mounted bike rack that incorporates a cable lock and would lock to the vehicle would bed the Thule Raceway, part # TH9001PRO. The rack uses 4 lockable retractable cables to attach to the vehicle, as opposed to the difficult to use 6 straps and buckles that other racks use. If you don't mind using a strap rack, the Thule Archway, part # TH9009XT includes Thule's TrunkLocker strap (reinforced strap) to secure the rack to the vehicle and features a built-in cable...
