Video Transcript for Thule Passage 2 Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Test Course

Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side-to-side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up-and-down action. This will be just like driving out of a parking lot, parking garage, or driveway. .

I just assembled it and put it on my Dodge Grand Caravan last night. Took about a 5 mile ride with it this morning to see how it was doing. Seems to be fine. I've tightened all straps as tight as possible. The side clips seem to have a little play along the sides of the hatchback door but everything appears and seems to be solid. Even with the straps tightened all the way, you can still move/pull on them a bit, because they are nylon, so even though they seem to be secure now, I will check them at different intervals to see if they are retaining their hold. The sway bar option was a nice addition and I also cut some Velcro straps to tie down both wheels and the handle bars from swinging. Another nice surprise was that I was still able to open my rear van door with the bike rack attached. I would say, all in all, this is a great sturdy design and as long as I use due diligence to watch for any loosening of the straps over time, I should be just fine! 216686

One year later and no problems at all. I think the longest distance I have traveled with the bike on the rack has been about 25-30 miles, mostly around to local biking areas. I may be taking it a few hundred miles down the road coming up in the future as their are some out of state locations I want to go to. I will not hesitate to do this or worry about any issues since this rack has shown itself to be so dependable. I usually leave it on the van for a few months at a time and when I have had to remove it and put it back on, it has been quite easy and fast. After having the rack on for a long period the rubber foam cushions can get pretty flattened where they sit up against the window and back of the van, The foam will reform back out about 25 of where it was flattened to, so probably at some point I may need to replace that foam but other than that I have no complaints and have been extremely satisfied with this product.

Ordered online, it shipped the same day. Received it 3 days later. There is a little assembly, but, pretty simple. It took me less than 15 minutes to install and no tools were needed. It is adjustable to be used on many different auto types, but, the instructions were very clear about how to adjust it to fit my 2011 Ford Edge. I have used it twice so far to transport my bike. There are a couple of items that are inherent in the design, not a flaw, but, you need to be aware of them. First, you can't use rear window wipers. Second, the back-up alarm goes nuts because it registers a bike less than 6 inches behind you (I tolerate it for the few seconds it takes to back out of my driveway or out of a parking lot). Third, there is a little flexibility, it is held on with straps and clamps, not bolts, so, it bounces a little when you go over bumps or make sharp turns, however, it holds the bike fast to the frame and stays on the car. I use mine to transport my bike on short trips around town to bike trails. On a long trip I would suggest checking that the straps remain tight from time to time during the drive. 173351

I have a 2013 Edge. Have you had any problems with the rear spoiler. I am scared it might crack or get damaged. Any problems or concerns since you have been using the rack? Thanks,Bryan

Will the Thule TH910XT for the 2011 Camry accommodate a womens bike?

comment by: Sandy - 09/02/2013

2008

Yes it will, but it will probably need an adapter bar. Without an adapter bar, the bike either will not fit, or will sit far off balance like in the picture from Melony. An adapter bar provides a full size, level tube from which to hang the bike. Thule offers one, it is part TH982XT.

Good product that folds when not in use, but I don't like the side and bottom straps. They are not separate straps and they use a much poorer design compared to the top 2 straps to tighten them down. Top 2 straps use a simple unlock with thumb, pull to tighten, then release thumb and automatically locks straps in place. Side and bottom straps are a loop through design and require you to pull and tug on the other end to tighten. Also top straps when using the clamps on the trunk pulls it too far up causing about a finger gap. So I re-read the instructions and choose to re-route the strap through the clamp to go under the trunk like a support. That prevents my trunk from excessive gap. I had already contacted etrailer for a return but found out the return shipping alone was almost the cost of the product so I decided to keep it and use it for the time being. So either get a different design trunk rack, or just go with a hitch. Its better that way. I just swapped mines out for a hitch considering the price of the hitch is similar and more sturdy. 134157

Comments

Thank you for the comment Qhua! If you do experience any difficulty in mounting the carrier with the top hooks, as you mentioned you can re-route the top clips to be used as a in clip this is our Versa-Clip design that will allow for multiple mounting methods. We also appreciate your feedback on the strap design. As the top straps are the most load bearing, we have used a different tensioning system to ensure trouble free operation. Thanks again!

The e-trailer service is exceptional. I had trouble mounting this rack on my 09 VW CC and they provided technical assistance. Due to the fit issue I returned the rack and purchased a hitch mount set-up. They were very helpful in assisting with the return and alternate purchase. In this age of poor internet customer service they are great. If it is not right they will work with you on a good solution. 120397

I just returned from a 3 week vacation where two small bikes were attached with my cruiser bike on the rack. It worked fantastically well. It is easy to attach to the van and is tightly secured. Putting the straps around and under the spoiler was a great idea on your part. This is a great bike rack for the Dodge Grand Caravan 2013! Like many others, impressed by the information on the site and the speed in processing / shipping my order. Loved seeing the video demo of how to install on our Town and Country. After I received it, I was initially frustrated as even with the Bike Adapter Bar (TH982XT) I couldn't seem to get both bikes on the rack and have decent clearance from the ground -- my test was to drive out of our drive way and if a bike wheel hit the pavement when dropping off the curve they weren't high enough. I was also initially frustrated with the spacing between the bikes. I was contemplating whether to return or not, and after I realized you could adjust the spacing between the bike straps on the arms. This allowed me to make the adjustment necessary in bike spacing to have them both fit fairly easily. I did have to adjust seat height on both bikes to get the fit right...looking forward to actual test in a couple weeks when we take the bikes camping. 150291

Made a last minute decision to purchase this bike rack so that my daughter would have more room in her SUV for a move to Charlestown, SC. As promised by Kelly, it arrived the evening before her departure with only a $7 or so 2- day delivery charge. Although a little concerned, it was at my house in a little over 48 hours. Had a little issue with the mount due to the bike's unusual frame, but the design of the rack and the accessories provided more than allowed for a successful and safe installation. Wish I had a pix of her SUV loaded with the roof bag on top, the bike on the rear and just enough room for her to slide into the car. But she's already in her new home with a bike rack for future use that loaded so securely that it barely moved when I pulled on it. As an added measure, I did velcro the wheels to the bike frame to immobilize any extraneous movement. This is a quality product that is very reasonably priced. 149784

The product arrived in very quick time. However, one of the locking spring loaded pins refused to pop out to its locked position. After about a half hour of fiddling it finally popped out as it should have. It is installed in a 2014 Rav 4 XLE and fitted well. I have yet to take it for a test run. The side straps are secured to the back glass window and hopefully will be O.K. It did take quite a bit of adjusting to fit the two bikes as they do not have normal cross bars. 241703

The Thule Passage bike carrier was exactly what I was looking for. It is the perfect size for 2 adult bikes. The rack is easy to setup and fits on to my Milan securely. My boyfriend helped me the first time but it is simple enough for me to put it on my car alone. The last time I ordered a bike carrier online it was big and bulky. Once I had everything out of the box and started to put it altogether, I found a paper at the bottom of the box saying that model did not fit 3 vehicles and one was mine. I was a little discouraged and now apprehensive when ordering another rack. But this carrier was exactly what it said it was and there were no surprise papers at the bottom of the box. Great choice if you're looking for a carrier for 1 or 2 bikes. 81310

A clamp-on adapter bar should do the trick. It attaches to the handle bars and the seat post to provide that flat bar. I have added links to Thule's bar, part # TH982XT

and all the bars we offer.

I purchased this for use on my '08 Prius. It arrived a day before the promised delivery day. Before installation I watched the etrailer install video and read the instruction booklet. The suggested setting for my vehicle was slightly off from what I chose (same thing happened in the etrailer video). After installation I loaded up my bike and headed over to a favorite riding site. The rack was securely strapped to my car. I didn't see any shifting or reason for concern, even at highway speeds. I am going to get several Velcro straps to secure the portions of the straps that are not needed. I also will strap the tires and fork to the frame. I just don't like to have the tires spinning or the fork swiveling when hauling my bike. The customer service rep, Izzy, was terrific. World class service !! 233585

So far, so good. The bike rack was fairly easy to put on my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe; & everything seemed to stay where it belongs on the trip to Pizza Hut for supper tonight. I was a little skeptical about how the rack would work because of the low price point but figured Thule always makes good products so went ahead and purchased it. I was pleasantly surprised. I was able to put it together quickly and install it on my car easily. It took a couple tries to figure out the best way to mount the two bikes because of the frame sizes but once I got the system down, it worked great. Must admit I had one eye glued to the rear-view mirror on the first drive but everything stayed put and didn't loosen up. The rack is particularly nice if you aren't very tall as you are mounting it to the back rather than struggling to get the bikes on top of the car. 206248

A great product! I was really nervous about transporting our old bikes 1200 miles to Cape Cod and back. My wife researched carriers and bought the Thule TH910XT. What a great product! Well designed and very well built. The initial installation takes less than a half hour as you need to adjust everything and get the feel of it - after that, it takes about 5 minutes -tops to put on the car! It's tight and secure.and the bikes locked down really well. I felt really comfortable with the bikes on the rack after a while. This is definitely one of the best products I have ever bought! Have no fear! Do it! 148248

Perfect rack for cars with factory spoiler! I have a '07 Chevy Cobalt and the rack easily clears the spoiler. Fast, simple to install. Took New York roads (including back roads which=hills, twists, pot holes, squirrels), without changing my aggressive driving. Had to give it a real good test. No swaying, nothing came loose, it was like the bike was bolted to the car. I used extra long straps to stabilize wheels, so they don't spin or rock. Nothing touched my bumper or trunk lid. Everything on rack that touches car is rubbery or rubber coated. VERY satisfied...and very affordable. 43501

Was fairly easy to figure out and put together. Mounting it to my 2010 Exuinox was a little time consuming doing it alone, but all in all it was worth the time. Held our two bikes very well. I would recommend this product to others looking for a more economical way to transport bikes other than having to install a receiver that hitches to a bike rack. 180118

I ordered the Thule TH910XT trunk mount bicycle carrier for my 2015 Hyundai Sonata and it fits great! It comes in handy when I bike far away from home, on vacation or bringing the bike in for repair. It easily folds up and fits neatly in the trunk if so desired. It sets up quickly, holds the bike snug and keeps it from swaying back and forth towards the license plate which keeps the pedals away from the car. It holds another bike if desired and keeps the bikes from hitting each other. Great product...I'm glad I found it on etrailer.com. 157179

When we bought our 2013 Explorer, there was no bike rack available that would fit it. We were thrilled to find this rack for our car. Great customer service, same day shipping, overall perfect experience and great product. I had the rack in my hands less than 48 hours after ordering. The bike rack was straightforward to put together, and is smallish and light. The first time putting it on my car was a little awkward, but the second time was easy. I also like how it comes with a separate strap for stabilizing the bikes (I used to use bunjee cords for this). Whatever you do, if you open the rear door while the bike rack is on it, make sure you remember that yes, the bike rack is still on the door when you close it and get out of the way, or you'll get banged on the head *really* hard. 222240

The Thule Passage 2 fit well on my Scion xA (2006) and carried two road bikes with aplomb on a 5-hour drive at ~70 MPH in the rain. The mounting brackets for the bikes required adjustment to space out the two bikes further apart; this took a lot of force to move but I was eventually able to get them positioned so the two bikes, one with an XL and the other an XS frame, could be mounted properly. The bottom and side straps and clips feel kind of wobbly but in practice they held up perfectly fine. 310845

I purchased the rack and a few days later it worked right the first time. The rack is exactly what I expected and delivered when I expected. The rack fits my 2003 Saab 9-3 Aero right out of the box, is easy to install in under 10 minutes, and seems to be sturdy parts and sound design that will last. 103731

I have put my bike rack together having little trouble because the instructions are quite good. I am very pleased with the rack's construction. I will be mounting it on my HHR this weekend for a test run with my bike mounted for 10 - 15 minutes trip thru town and some highway miles. Being as I've never used a bike rack before I'll be making frequent stops to check the rack & bike straps. I will be using the rack soon and I'm excited about having my bike for the up coming vacation. 138962

The rack is easy to install on the car and provides a firm base for the bicycles. The bicycle mounts are a problem. They have so much bulk that my wife's bike is extremely difficult to get it on the mount. Also the straps that secure the bike are very strong, that is good, but bad from the point that if she is by herself she can not fasten or loosen them by herself. Overall a good product but not great. 124727

The weight of the bike and the height of the car are the most important things to consider if loading the bike is a matter of concern. There are other bike racks, hitch mounted versions, that sit much lower and would make loading the bike easier. Platform style racks make loading and unloading the bikes quite a bit easier than with trunk mount or hanging style racks.

Well, I haven't used it yet, and I'm concerned that it has the potential to do damage to my car. I'm only keeping this bicycle rack because it's a Thule and it is listed as an appropriate rack for my car. Photos always show the lower arm of this rack seated on the bumper of the car but the fit for a Subaru Outback is that the lower arm rests at the bottom of the license plate "well." My concern is that with 2 bicycles on this rack, won't it put a dent in the metal???? 134552

As long as you follow the directions for mounting you should be just fine. Many vehicles will have the lower support rest in the license plate well. Weve got photos of this rack installed on a Ford Edge where the bottom support rests on the license plate well.

Thank you for the comment Rae! We at Thule have done extensive testing to ensure our carriers will work with many vehicles without causing any damage. If your car is listed as a fit in the included fit guide, or going through the fit guide online, you can rest assured that when used as directed, there will be no damage to the vehicle. In addition, because each vehicle is different, in the very last column of the fit guide, we list vehicle specific fit tips. These are for reference to the placement on each vehicle, and can be found in the fit tips section on the last page. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Thanks again!

Just completed 1300 miles of travelling carrying two bikes on the TH910XT two bike carrier on a Volvo S60 sedan. I was initially concerned about placing a bike carrier on this vehicle let alone two and travelling 1300+ miles. It performed excellent. I was also impressed with the added sway bar attachments that keep my two bikes straight and helped to keep bikes from rubbing against each other. I would recommend this carrier...excellent features and good price. 95175

I bought this bike rack for my RAV4 because it stated it works for the RAV4 as long as you don't use more than 70lbs. I only used it one time and ended up buying a trailer hitch and hitch-mounted rack. Although it works, the piece along the top of the RAV4 that the straps hook to is just plastic and it just feels like anchoring a bike rack to it was asking for trouble. So now it sits in my shed and I probably can't return it for a refund. 295888

It is a very sturdy, well made bike rack for 2 bikes. I assembled it myself and my main concern was whether or not it would ruin my manicure--it did not! It was fairly easy to assemble, just requiring some effort and a little lubrication to slide the bars into their slots. My last rack was in an accident, so now I have a very nice rack to transport my bike so I can go for rides! Sorry but my computer won't upload pictures! 225192

I assembled the Thule Passage 2 trunk bike rack but have not yet used it on the road. The Instructions for assembling the rack were very poorly written and presented. The drawings did not look like the parts in the box and Some items were listed but not in the box AND some items were not marked properly on the instructions diagram! Good grief! Get a proof reader! I hope the rack works better than the Instructions did. 314411

Excellent on-line shopping experience. Your website is extremely descriptive of a product. Ordering was simple and your company response and delivery time was superb. I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone who has a need like I did. The product I purchased came with easy to follow directions and I didn't really need them being that I watched an install video on the etrailer site prior to delivery. Thanks etrailer! 151295

It's user friendly-- easy to put on the trunk and easy to take off of the trunk. The bike rack is light and is very stable. When it is attached to the trunk it does not obstruct the sight in the rear view mirror. It takes about 5 minutes to put it on the car, and less than a minute to remove it. It adds no extra length to the car in case I'd want to park the car in my garage with the bike rack on it. 261474

The Thule bike rack does an excellent job. It is simple and sturdy, well designed, and made in the USA. The bikes ride securely with little or no motion. The directions were clear and accurate. It took all of about 10 minutes from opening the box to mounting the bikes, and that included reading the directions! I foresee the bikes will ride securely on the back of the car being towed by our motor home. 157505

Just mounted this rack + bike onto my 2014 PriusC to move from Chicago to Michigan so about a 4 hour drive. I specifically used this site because they have YouTube videos with step by step instructions. My move is over and everything went very smoothly. The rack was easily to install and take off and my bike was very secure. I didn't notice any scratching on my bike or car either! So far so good. 215683

This is a solid, well-constructed rack. It holds securely on the back of my 2006 Prius. The instructions do provide vehicle-specific adjustments to make but I found that I had to modify them slightly for my specific type of bike. Also, I purchased one that had slightly damaged packaging and got a discount on pricing. The rack was perfect so I wouldn't hesitate to buy a damaged box. Good purchase. 151000

It will be nice to have room for our camping gear and our bikes on this trip. 284763

Could not fit one of two carrier arms into either hub of the frame. After I talked with the Thule warranty people, they sent a replacement carrier arm which also did not fit into either hub. After talking with your warranty people again, they are sending an entire new bike carrier. I will be returning the original unit to e-trailer, which is the web site I purchased the bike carrier from. 147186

The folks at etrailer are outstanding! Great products, reviews, and customer service. This Thule Passage 2-bike carrier mounts easily to the back of my 2011 Subaru Outback wagon. It is a little fussy to load small bikes because you have to rotate one of the arms down, then hold the bike up while you rotate the arm back up again. It takes 3 hands. Otherwise, it has been just what I needed. 311909

  • Which 2 Bike Rack Will Work On A Ford Escape Without A Trailer Hitch
  • Since you do not have a hitch on your Ford Escape you can use a trunk bike rack. Thule and Yakima will both have two choices each that will carry two bikes and fit a Ford Escape. The Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier, # TH910XT, will fit on a Ford Escape. It has a weight capacity of 70 lbs. and attaches to the vehicle by six straps for added stability.. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I...

  • Recommend A 2 Bike Rack For Lexus RX350
  • You have a few options for a bike rack for your 2008 Lexus RX350. You could go with a hitch mounted bike rack, a trunk bike rack, or a roof bike rack. Depending on how often you go biking can be one of the biggest factors in choosing the bike rack that is right for you. If you plan on biking often, I would recommend going with a hitch bike rack, for ease of loading and traveling. If you will only be biking seldom, or traveling short distances, I would recommend going with a trunk bike rack. For...
