Video Transcript for Thule Passage 2 Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to show you part number TH910, the Passage 2 from Thule. This is a 2 Bike Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Carrier. It goes on the back of your vehicle it does not require a trailer hitch or anything. It usually installs onto the deck lid of your trunk. One of the nice features about this bicycle rack is it can adjust to virtually any shape of car or SUV. This is where you make your adjustments, depending on the type of vehicle you have. You simply just unscrew this, and you have one on each side. It is basically just like a little bolt with a handle on the end. And you can take this and adjust the bicycle rack to whatever shape you need. Again, the rack comes with instructions on how to adjust it for your particular model. On ours we will use number 6. And also for storage, the arms will actually rotate and fold out of the way, too. And that is easily done by pushing in two buttons. And there will be a button here and there is one on the opposite side. Just squeeze them together, and you can see they rotate out of the way.

To install it, first off you want to start off with the trunk open, as we have here. And there are six straps. And it looks kind of complicated but it is really not. Basically you start from the top and work your way down. You take your top straps ,and they typically catch on the edge of your trunk by your glass of course. And that is typical on most models. And that kind of holds the rack in position for you. Just a point: you might want to take a second and center it on the vehicle. The next straps you want to work with are the side straps, here. And they will catch onto this portion of the trunk right here. And that is where you have to get into the trunk and open it up. So you want to open it up just a little bit and catch the edge however you can. Do that on both sides, and try to get some tension with them. And then you can go ahead and just shut your hatch as normal.

OK, once you have those set, then you can go to the straps that go down to the bottom, you can go ahead and strap those into place. Now, these straps vary. Sometimes they will catch underneath the trunk, here. Or, in this case, the instructions recommend actually going down behind the bumper, and there are two loops underneath by the frame that you can actually hook up into. And once you have your straps in their positions, again, take a second to make sure you have it straight on the vehicle and basically just start tightening up your straps from there. Basically, again, just start from the top and work your way down. Now, one thing you do want to aim for is having the padding kind of resting between the trunk and the bumper, if possible. Now we will go to the side straps, here. And the side straps will actually tighten up these bottom straps, here, too. And then a couple of tugs on each side just to make sure you have kind of an even torque on them, and then go back up to the top straps and just make sure they are good and tight.

Once you have your bicycle rack strapped into place, go ahead and take a few seconds to tie up your loose ends. What seems to work is just roll it up as tight as possible and you actually can tuck it into this area right here, underneath this track where the hinge is. You can do this in any fashion you like, but this actually seems to work pretty good. And then the other strap, here, we actually took the loose ends and just tucked it back through this angle right here. And just that little bit will not hurt anything.

All right, let us go ahead and install a bicycle and give you an idea of how it fits onto the rack. Always start with your heaviest bike toward the back of the vehicle, and the lighter ones of course to the outside. As you can see, it did not take very long to strap on the bike. And again, that is because the cradle is right here. It is pretty nice. First off, you have got the rubber strap that you can stretch to fit virtually any type of frame. Pretty easy to use catches on right here. And the cradle itself is a type of rubber material and itself has these stiffened grooves inside there. And that gives you a place for the cables to go so they do not get smashed up against your frame. The cradles also do rotate left and right and front to rear to accommodate different bicycles different combinations of handlebars and seats, so they do not run into each other. And there you have it for part number TH910 from Thule, the Passage 2.

Ordered online, it shipped the same day. Received it 3 days later. There is a little assembly, but, pretty simple. It took me less than 15 minutes to install and no tools were needed. It is adjustable to be used on many different auto types, but, the instructions were very clear about how to adjust it to fit my 2011 Ford Edge. I have used it twice so far to transport my bike. There are a couple of items that are inherent in the design, not a flaw, but, you need to be aware of them. First, you can't use rear window wipers. Second, the back-up alarm goes nuts because it registers a bike less than 6 inches behind you (I tolerate it for the few seconds it takes to back out of my driveway or out of a parking lot). Third, there is a little flexibility, it is held on with straps and clamps, not bolts, so, it bounces a little when you go over bumps or make sharp turns, however, it holds the bike fast to the frame and stays on the car. I use mine to transport my bike on short trips around town to bike trails. On a long trip I would suggest checking that the straps remain tight from time to time during the drive. 173351

I have a 2013 Edge. Have you had any problems with the rear spoiler. I am scared it might crack or get damaged. Any problems or concerns since you have been using the rack? Thanks,Bryan

The e-trailer video helped me easily install my new rack -- my first time handling a bike rack. Elegant success! And your order/shipping/delivery/follow-up service is excellent -- above par. Thank you! 93072

Will the Thule TH910XT for the 2011 Camry accommodate a womens bike?

comment by: Sandy - 09/02/2013

Yes it will, but it will probably need an adapter bar. Without an adapter bar, the bike either will not fit, or will sit far off balance like in the picture from Melony. An adapter bar provides a full size, level tube from which to hang the bike. Thule offers one, it is part TH982XT.

As a business person, Im impressed by your follow-up as I was immediately after my purchase. My bike rack is working out well.Thank you, thank you. And keep up your excellent approach to relationship building.

Good product that folds when not in use, but I don't like the side and bottom straps. They are not separate straps and they use a much poorer design compared to the top 2 straps to tighten them down. Top 2 straps use a simple unlock with thumb, pull to tighten, then release thumb and automatically locks straps in place. Side and bottom straps are a loop through design and require you to pull and tug on the other end to tighten. Also top straps when using the clamps on the trunk pulls it too far up causing about a finger gap. So I re-read the instructions and choose to re-route the strap through the clamp to go under the trunk like a support. That prevents my trunk from excessive gap. I had already contacted etrailer for a return but found out the return shipping alone was almost the cost of the product so I decided to keep it and use it for the time being. So either get a different design trunk rack, or just go with a hitch. Its better that way. I just swapped mines out for a hitch considering the price of the hitch is similar and more sturdy. 134157

Thank you for the comment Qhua! If you do experience any difficulty in mounting the carrier with the top hooks, as you mentioned you can re-route the top clips to be used as a in clip this is our Versa-Clip design that will allow for multiple mounting methods. We also appreciate your feedback on the strap design. As the top straps are the most load bearing, we have used a different tensioning system to ensure trouble free operation. Thanks again!

The e-trailer service is exceptional. I had trouble mounting this rack on my 09 VW CC and they provided technical assistance. Due to the fit issue I returned the rack and purchased a hitch mount set-up. They were very helpful in assisting with the return and alternate purchase. In this age of poor internet customer service they are great. If it is not right they will work with you on a good solution. 120397

I return the product because it did not fit tight on the trunk and cracked the plastic Ridge on the trunk.I have a trailer mount that works excellent.

Like many others, impressed by the information on the site and the speed in processing / shipping my order. Loved seeing the video demo of how to install on our Town and Country. After I received it, I was initially frustrated as even with the Bike Adapter Bar (TH982XT) I couldn't seem to get both bikes on the rack and have decent clearance from the ground -- my test was to drive out of our drive way and if a bike wheel hit the pavement when dropping off the curve they weren't high enough. I was also initially frustrated with the spacing between the bikes. I was contemplating whether to return or not, and after I realized you could adjust the spacing between the bike straps on the arms. This allowed me to make the adjustment necessary in bike spacing to have them both fit fairly easily. I did have to adjust seat height on both bikes to get the fit right...looking forward to actual test in a couple weeks when we take the bikes camping. 150291

Made a last minute decision to purchase this bike rack so that my daughter would have more room in her SUV for a move to Charlestown, SC. As promised by Kelly, it arrived the evening before her departure with only a $7 or so 2- day delivery charge. Although a little concerned, it was at my house in a little over 48 hours. Had a little issue with the mount due to the bike's unusual frame, but the design of the rack and the accessories provided more than allowed for a successful and safe installation. Wish I had a pix of her SUV loaded with the roof bag on top, the bike on the rear and just enough room for her to slide into the car. But she's already in her new home with a bike rack for future use that loaded so securely that it barely moved when I pulled on it. As an added measure, I did velcro the wheels to the bike frame to immobilize any extraneous movement. This is a quality product that is very reasonably priced. 149784

The Thule Passage bike carrier was exactly what I was looking for. It is the perfect size for 2 adult bikes. The rack is easy to setup and fits on to my Milan securely. My boyfriend helped me the first time but it is simple enough for me to put it on my car alone. The last time I ordered a bike carrier online it was big and bulky. Once I had everything out of the box and started to put it altogether, I found a paper at the bottom of the box saying that model did not fit 3 vehicles and one was mine. I was a little discouraged and now apprehensive when ordering another rack. But this carrier was exactly what it said it was and there were no surprise papers at the bottom of the box. Great choice if you're looking for a carrier for 1 or 2 bikes. 81310

All the videos show a mans bike with a bar. My bike is a ladies bike no bar how do I mount it?

comment by: Linda - 05/10/2014

A clamp-on adapter bar should do the trick. It attaches to the handle bars and the seat post to provide that flat bar. I have added links to Thule's bar, part # TH982XT
Thule Bike Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes
and all the bars we offer.

I didnt want to have to buy a hitch for my vehicle even though my husband was sure I would have to because of the curved hatch on my MKX but this rack didn't require a hitch and works great. It' s easy to attach and holds both of our bikes securely. 89478

Hi Jennifer,I have purchased the same vehicle and noticed you placed the clips on top of the spoiler and on the edges of the glass - Doesnt the weight the bikes brought down the little spoiler at the top of the glass?

comment by: JP - 08/09/2013

In response to JPs question: No, we havent noticed any pull on the spoiler at the top of the glass.

A great product! I was really nervous about transporting our old bikes 1200 miles to Cape Cod and back. My wife researched carriers and bought the Thule TH910XT. What a great product! Well designed and very well built. The initial installation takes less than a half hour as you need to adjust everything and get the feel of it - after that, it takes about 5 minutes -tops to put on the car! It's tight and secure.and the bikes locked down really well. I felt really comfortable with the bikes on the rack after a while. This is definitely one of the best products I have ever bought! Have no fear! Do it! 148248

Perfect rack for cars with factory spoiler! I have a '07 Chevy Cobalt and the rack easily clears the spoiler. Fast, simple to install. Took New York roads (including back roads which=hills, twists, pot holes, squirrels), without changing my aggressive driving. Had to give it a real good test. No swaying, nothing came loose, it was like the bike was bolted to the car. I used extra long straps to stabilize wheels, so they don't spin or rock. Nothing touched my bumper or trunk lid. Everything on rack that touches car is rubbery or rubber coated. VERY satisfied...and very affordable. 43501

Was fairly easy to figure out and put together. Mounting it to my 2010 Exuinox was a little time consuming doing it alone, but all in all it was worth the time. Held our two bikes very well. I would recommend this product to others looking for a more economical way to transport bikes other than having to install a receiver that hitches to a bike rack. 180118

I ordered the Thule TH910XT trunk mount bicycle carrier for my 2015 Hyundai Sonata and it fits great! It comes in handy when I bike far away from home, on vacation or bringing the bike in for repair. It easily folds up and fits neatly in the trunk if so desired. It sets up quickly, holds the bike snug and keeps it from swaying back and forth towards the license plate which keeps the pedals away from the car. It holds another bike if desired and keeps the bikes from hitting each other. Great product...I'm glad I found it on 157179

Great customer service, same day shipping, overall perfect experience and great product. I had the rack in my hands less than 48 hours after ordering. The rack performed flawlessly on an over 600mile road trip. The straps stayed tight with no loosening at sustained high speeds for hours. I'm very happy with this purchase. 133007

by: Ted10/14/2013 is a great site because it left me confident of my purchase. I easily searched the type of rack and my car model. Several recommendations were shown and easily compared. I purchased the rack and a few days later it worked right the first time. The rack is exactly what I expected and delivered when I expected. The rack fits my 2003 Saab 9-3 Aero right out of the box, is easy to install in under 10 minutes, and seems to be sturdy parts and sound design that will last. 103731

I have put my bike rack together having little trouble because the instructions are quite good. I am very pleased with the rack's construction. I will be mounting it on my HHR this weekend for a test run with my bike mounted for 10 - 15 minutes trip thru town and some highway miles. Being as I've never used a bike rack before I'll be making frequent stops to check the rack & bike straps. I will be using the rack soon and I'm excited about having my bike for the up coming vacation. 138962

by: Don Boyle04/11/2014

The rack is easy to install on the car and provides a firm base for the bicycles. The bicycle mounts are a problem. They have so much bulk that my wife's bike is extremely difficult to get it on the mount. Also the straps that secure the bike are very strong, that is good, but bad from the point that if she is by herself she can not fasten or loosen them by herself. Overall a good product but not great. 124727

Your comment concerns me. Im an older female not in the best strength.

comment by: Lucy P - 03/11/2015

The weight of the bike and the height of the car are the most important things to consider if loading the bike is a matter of concern. There are other bike racks, hitch mounted versions, that sit much lower and would make loading the bike easier. Platform style racks make loading and unloading the bikes quite a bit easier than with trunk mount or hanging style racks.

Well, I haven't used it yet, and I'm concerned that it has the potential to do damage to my car. I'm only keeping this bicycle rack because it's a Thule and it is listed as an appropriate rack for my car. Photos always show the lower arm of this rack seated on the bumper of the car but the fit for a Subaru Outback is that the lower arm rests at the bottom of the license plate "well." My concern is that with 2 bicycles on this rack, won't it put a dent in the metal???? 134552

As long as you follow the directions for mounting you should be just fine. Many vehicles will have the lower support rest in the license plate well. Weve got photos of this rack installed on a Ford Edge where the bottom support rests on the license plate well.

Patrick B - 06/10/2014

Thank you for the comment Rae! We at Thule have done extensive testing to ensure our carriers will work with many vehicles without causing any damage. If your car is listed as a fit in the included fit guide, or going through the fit guide online, you can rest assured that when used as directed, there will be no damage to the vehicle. In addition, because each vehicle is different, in the very last column of the fit guide, we list vehicle specific fit tips. These are for reference to the placement on each vehicle, and can be found in the fit tips section on the last page. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Thanks again!

Just completed 1300 miles of travelling carrying two bikes on the TH910XT two bike carrier on a Volvo S60 sedan. I was initially concerned about placing a bike carrier on this vehicle let alone two and travelling 1300+ miles. It performed excellent. I was also impressed with the added sway bar attachments that keep my two bikes straight and helped to keep bikes from rubbing against each other. I would recommend this carrier...excellent features and good price. 95175

The Thule bike rack does an excellent job. It is simple and sturdy, well designed, and made in the USA. The bikes ride securely with little or no motion. The directions were clear and accurate. It took all of about 10 minutes from opening the box to mounting the bikes, and that included reading the directions! I foresee the bikes will ride securely on the back of the car being towed by our motor home. 157505

This is a solid, well-constructed rack. It holds securely on the back of my 2006 Prius. The instructions do provide vehicle-specific adjustments to make but I found that I had to modify them slightly for my specific type of bike. Also, I purchased one that had slightly damaged packaging and got a discount on pricing. The rack was perfect so I wouldn't hesitate to buy a damaged box. Good purchase. 151000

I was skeptical at first. I figured that something just wouldn't fit for my style SUV. I was wrong. I worked out great. Then I realized I couldn't use it as I have a step through cruiser/comfort back. NO crossbar to hang bike onto rack. I called thinking I would have to send it back. They gave me the solution. An adaptor just for bikes like mine. A review for that will be separate. 56996

I bought this for my wife's Traverse. She's forced me to start biking with her. I struggled getting the bikes in and out of the vehicle. This rack has been a huge relief for me. The best part is how easy it is to attach and remove. 42368

The instructions look ore intimidating than they really are. Everything went smoothly except it was hard to fit the arms in, but they eventually got in. Also, hard to get our kid's bike on. Even the adapter was too small for it. 89449

Goes together easily. Fits on my Honda Element 2006 (sadly, you can't open the read door once it's installed, but that's to be expected, I suppose, given the nature of the product and the clamshell design of the read door). 144852

Had to make a minor modification to fit a ladies bike. Have yet to road test it other than a drive around the block. As a mechanical engineer and long time designer of all things cool, this is a well made bike rack. 163320

Arrived on time. I watched the online video to understand how to install. Because the sides of trunk are curved, it's hard to get those hooks to stay in place, but it eventually worked. Very happy with the purchase. 143359

product is as stated - looks to be solid - although haven't installed it yet. Shipping box was damaged and so was bike rack box, but no damage done - shipping company was the culprit, not the shipper. 136772

Do you have a question about this Trunk Bike Racks?

  • Which 2 Bike Rack Will Work On A Ford Escape Without A Trailer Hitch
  • Since you do not have a hitch on your Ford Escape you can use a trunk bike rack. Thule and Yakima will both have two choices each that will carry two bikes and fit a Ford Escape. The Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier, # TH910XT, will fit on a Ford Escape. It has a weight capacity of 70 lbs. and attaches to the vehicle by six straps for added stability.. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I...

  • Recommend A 2 Bike Rack For Lexus RX350
  • You have a few options for a bike rack for your 2008 Lexus RX350. You could go with a hitch mounted bike rack, a trunk bike rack, or a roof bike rack. Depending on how often you go biking can be one of the biggest factors in choosing the bike rack that is right for you. If you plan on biking often, I would recommend going with a hitch bike rack, for ease of loading and traveling. If you will only be biking seldom, or traveling short distances, I would recommend going with a trunk bike rack. For...

  • Recommended Bike Rack Style for a 2010 Ford Escape
  • There are many options in bike racks for your 2010 Ford Escape. Your choice depends on how many bikes you are wanting to carry and the weight of the bikes. For your vehicle, the best would be either a hitch bike rack or a trunk mounted bike rack. The roof bike rack for your Ford Escape is not the best choice, because it requires lifting the bike to the roof of the vehicle. The hitch bike rack is a excellent choice, but it does require you have a trailer hitch on the back of your vehicle...

The Yakima SpareMe Bike Carrier, # Y02598, also might work if you take two measurements to be sure. • Yakima does not have any trunk mounted bike rack solutions for your 2010 Prius, but Thule does. You can use the Gateway, # TH9006XT, the Archway, # TH9009XT, or the Passage, # TH910XT. But I recommend the Raceway, # TH9001PRO. The Raceway features retractable cables that make installation and removal of the rack quick and easiest. Yakima lists two choices of bike racks available for the 2004 to 2009 Chevy Aveo, but they do not have a fitment for the 2010 model, because the 2010 model uses a spoiler that interferes with the bike rack. The simplest, strongest and safest option would be to install a hitch on the vehicle and use a hitch mounted bike rack. I would recommend using part # 87479.
