Today on this 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, were going to do a test fit of part number VGM-07-100 from Stromberg Carlson. This is our 100 series fifth wheel tailgate, and has a convenient cutout for towing a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch when youre hitching up. Well start off our test fit with the tailgate already removed from our truck, so lets go ahead and install our new tailgate in the same fashion the original tailgate would. Well start off by sliding the tailgate into the hinge onto the drives side, then well go over to the passengers side, line up the hinge, put the tailgate at about a 45 degree angle and slide it into place. Well go ahead and push it up until our latches meet the pins on the bed. Now well do one pin at a time.
Well pull it out, get it started and then well go to the other side and pull it out and then push it into place, and then go back to the other side and make sure its secure as well. Thats how out tailgate looks on our truck. To lower the tailgate well pull the pin out on one side to get it started, and then go to the other side and pull the pin out there. Thats it. The tailgate will rest on a bumper in the lowered position.
We stress we did not state anything about using the original cables from the tailgate, however there looks like there is a couple holes on each side that you could use to attach your cables to if you so desire. With that, that will finish it of our test fit of part number VGM-017-100 on our 2012 Chevrolet Silverado.

First I would like to say that the tailgate is exactly what I was looking for "BUT" when I received the product the first thing I noticed was that the latches did not match my 2008 GMC Sierra. The latches would have fit my old GMC, but the 2008 latch system has a pin system like you find in most latching systems for car doors. So I immediately panicked thinking I just waisted a lot of money on something I can't use. So I called etrailer with the problem. They really didn't know what to do with the problem so they gave me the number to Stromberg, who makes the tailgate. They were very good and helpful. As it turns out the old style latching system slips over the pins and the tailgate works just great. So if you are considering buying this tailgate I would say go ahead. etrailer will more than likely get more of my business. They were very fair and had great service. I am a happy customer. 32732

The tail gate for 5th wheel is top quality and the paint is excellent. I was a little disapointed with the instructions for installation as it has no instruction on how to install the cable stops to prevent it from going beyond level in the tail gate open position. Also there is nothing in the instructions that state it is for my truck, it does however give instructions for all other brands of pick-ups. It does not mention that the instructions were for my 2010 Chev 3500. Being a retired engineer, this did not give me a problem but I can see that persons of lesser education might be thrown for a loop.33431
