Perhaps the simplest type of heat exchanger, the tube-fin effectively cools a variety of automotive systems. The concept is simple: Fluid cools as it travels through the core by transferring heat out to the fins. The fins then provide the surface area necessary for sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the surrounding air. Quick, easy and effective.

Video Transcript for Transmission Cooler Installation - 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche
Today on our 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche, we'll be installing the Derale Transmission Cooler, part number D12906. We'll also be using the Derale Universal Mount Kit, part number D13002 and the GM Radiator Adaptor, part number D13035.Now our truck has had some modifications so the removal of the grill is different than normal, so we will not be showing it. With our grill out of the way, we'll go ahead and test fit the cooler. After finding a good spot for our cooler, using a couple of bolts and nuts we purchased separately, we'll attach the Derale brackets to the cooler. At this point, we want to leave the brackets loose until theyre mounted to the vehicle. We can go ahead and attach the rubber line to the cooler as well using two of the worm clamps. It also may be necessary to use some transmission fluid as lubricant to get the line around the fittings. We can now tighten down the worm clamp securing the rubber line to our cooler.
We will then place our cooler in its location and using a couple of self tapping bolts, we'll mount the cooler braces to the A-brace here on the truck. We'll do this on both sides. We can then tighten the brackets to the cooler. Now our cooler is secure and were ready to run the line. Going around the radiator, we'll pass the line through here to the factory cooler.Next, we'll need to identify the downstream transmission line.
This is the line that the transmission fluid is coming out of the factory transmission cooler in the radiator and heading back towards the transmission. To do this, we'll break torque the vehicle allowing the transmission fluid to warm up. The line that feels cooler is the one we'll be installing our new cooler into. We can then remove the holding device from the radiator and remove our line. Now, we'll take the GM adaptor and install it into the hole we removed the line from and reinsert the holding device. Now we'll determine where to cut our line in half on our new cooler.
Remember when cutting the line in half, youll want to leave enough room so the line doesnt kink. We'll slide the long end of our line onto the GM adapter here at the radiator, after sliding on another worm clamp where we can then tighten it down. We'll take the remaining clamp, slide it on the other line, slide the hose in, and tighten the clamp.Thats it, our transmission cooler is installed. We'll now go ahead and reassemble our truck, putting our grill back in place, as well as the headlights. Now all we need to do is check the fluid level and top it off as needed. We'll also want to make sure that there are no leaks. That completes our install of the Derale Transmission Cooler, part number D12906 in conjunction with the Derale Universal Mount Kit, part number D13002 and the GM Radiator Adaptor, part number D13035 on our 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche.

- Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2005 Acura MDX Towing a 3,750 Pound Boat and Trailer
- The Class of transmission cooler you use will depend more on where you can mount it. The most efficient place is in front of the AC condenser. You could then use a Class I cooler, like # D12901.
If mounted behind the condenser, I would go with a Class II like # D12906. If mounted behind the radiator I would go with a Class III like # D13502. The problem is that the further away from the front of the vehicle a cooler is mounted, the less airflow it receives. The less airflow a coolers receive

- The Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, part # D12906, should be mounted after the radiator. So it would be in line from the fluid return line, this is the recommended way to install part # D12906.
For mounting the unit, it is recommended that part # D12906 be mounted behind the grill and in front of the Air Conditioning Condenser Core, (see video link for reference).

- It would not be required that you mount a Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, part # D12906, in any particular direction, the line pressure from the transmission will push the fluid through the cooler regardless of if its mounted horizontally, vertically or any direction in between.
I would recommend you choose a location based on receiving maximizing airflow through the cooler, regardless of what direction it points.
I would also recommend you get a Derale Snap-In Radiato

- Recommendation For Transmission Cooler On A 1995 Nissan Parthfinder 4X4
- To determine what kind of transmission cooler you will need depends on how much weight you will be towing and where you will be towing.
If you will be towing a light load, less than 2,000 pounds, in flat driving conditions, your 1995 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 will do fine with a Class I rated cooler. If you will be towing more than a 2,000 pound load through some hills, I would use a Class II or Class III cooler.
I would recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler, part # D

To determine the correct fitting you will need to know the threaded diameter of the transmission fluid line fitting in your vehicles radiator.
If you need a 3/8 inch fitting you would need a Derale Radiator Adapter Fitting Kit, part # D13014. If you need a 1/2 inch fitting I would recommend a Derale R

- There really is not a down side to using a transmission cooler on a vehicle. It has been proven that transmission coolers will prolong the life of a transmission. Especially when the vehicle is towing a trailer. I would strongly recommend you install one since you will be pulling a 1,900 lb trailer with your 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. The power switch might enhance the shift points so that it will perform better while towing, but it will not prevent excess heat from building up in your transmission

1. Start engine while engine is cold
2. Place transmission shift lever in drive for no more than 10 seconds.
3. Stop engine and remove keys
4. Identify the transmission fluid return line by feeling both lines. The coolest line is the return line.

There will be 16 plastic rivets that will need to be removed. You can use a screwdriver to pop them out. Take your time getting these out so you do not break them.

- What to do if a Transmission Cooler Line Comes off and Fluid is Leaked
- It really is hard to say, your best bet would be to repair the line if you have not already. Fill the transmission up with the appropriate amount of fluid and then take it to a transmission repair shop to have them check it out.
Hopefully you get lucky, but there could be a wide range of potential internal problems depending on how long the vehicle was attempted to be driven and the temperature of the transmission.

- Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder 4X4 SE and 6K Trailer
- For a trailer weighing 6,000 pounds I recommend going with a stacked-plate cooler because they will be the most efficient and will provide the best cooling compared to the other cooler options. For a kit you can use # D13403.
For the best cooling you can get a cooler that comes with its own fan like # D13950. This will provide the optimum cooling no matter where the unit is mounted. I have included a link to our FAQ article on transmission coolers for you.
