Double-Eye Spring

Part NumberABC
PR525-1/4"3"12-5/8"

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The double-eye spring is suspended at the ends by hangers that attach to its eye or, in the case of tandem-axle or triple-axle systems, into hangers in the front and rear and an equalizer or equalizers in the center. To determine the type of hangers or hanger kit you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring you have, as well as your axle diameter and capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications.

Please Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension PR5 Review

Today we are going be taking a look at part number PR5, the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,800-lb Axles. Before ordering a new spring for your trailer, there are a few things you do need to know first. This spring measures 25 1/4 inches long by 1-3/4 inches wide. You will need to know the springs half-length which is measured from the center of the eye mount to the center of the spring here at the leaf bolt. This spring has a 12 5/8 inches half-length. One more measurement you will need to know is the spring height. To get the spring height well actually draw an imaginary line from the center of the eye to the center of the eye.

And using that line we will measure from it to the spring surface. This spring is 3 inches high. You will notice that it does have two 9/16-inch holes for mounting. They do have nylon bushings in them. The nylon bushing helps to prevent metal on metal contact while the spring is on the trailer. It does have 5 leaves within it giving it a capacity of 2,900 lbs. When you multiply that by two per axle, you get your 5,800-lb total axle capacity. And that does it for part number PR5, the 5-Leaf Double-Eyed Spring for 5,800-lb axles.

I just wanted to let you know what a GREAT experience it has been ordering from your company. I have never had a company check up or keep me as informed on what was happening with my order. It is a great relief to know that there are still some companies that care and are not just interested in "a sale." I have attached some pictures of the old springs I took off and the new one's. The old ones were stretched flat with my dump trailer empty. When I put the new ones on it even raised the trailer up at least 4 inches. 29072

Product was great. arrived early. But it was the wrong size, greatly in part, my fault. I measured the lenght of the leafs instead of the lenght from eye to eye center. Wish during the ordering processes it was explained on how to measure. I have looked at wheels and wheel bolt patern and the instructions for ordering the correct bolt patern there are great. I am sure its probably common knowledge with those that deal with leafs on a regular basis but for those of us that will order this only maybe once in a life time, measuring instructions would have been greatly appreciated. Loved how customer service was always in contact and still is after delivery. 26134

I recently bought Dexter E-Z Flex equalizers and was told by multiple forum members, "Since you're unbolting your leaf springs anyways it's cheap insurance to replace your 4 leaf springs with 5 leaf springs" After much online research I found etrailer had the best price when you took advantage of their free shipping special. I could not be happier with their service and FAST shipping!!! 142844

I just finished installing the leaf springs on my triple axel boat trailer and I'm very satisfied with the result. Shipping was quicker than anticipated… One suggestion is having a complete hardware kit that is galvanized for salt water boat trailers. i.e Shackles, equalizer, and bolts with nylon lock nuts. Thanks again for a Great Product! 38691

The springs are great! Not only did they go on smoothly, but they got here promptly too! I was very much impressed by the customer care throughout my purchase. I actually received three emails the day I ordered, each from a different person in the chain and updating me on the progress towards shipment. Thanks for the prompt, courteous service. 19569

The springs appear to be of excellent quality. I have installed them without a problem. I have not run the trailer yet but I am sure they will work fine. I am extremly happy with the service from etrailer, fast delivery, great follow up, and the best price on the internet. They have a customer for life. 118481

The leaf springs and U bolts were of good quality (what can you say about leaf springs). The only problem was insufficient capture and cushioning in the shipping container. I realize 4 springs are heavy but these busted completely through the box and luckily UPS kept the springs and box together. 133548

Received my order right on schedule. The box was much larger than the items but packaged ok. I think a smaller box would work better as all the weight was in the bottom of the box. I haven't installed them yet so I can't review the product itself but appears it will work as designed. 139928

Expert Answers about 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - PR5Do you have a question about this Trailer Suspension?

  • Hanger Spacing Dimensions for Installing Double-Eye Leaf Springs on a Trailer
  • The Trailer Leaf Spring, 2250 lbs. 6 Leaf, item # PR626, is sold as a replacement spring for older trailers and measures 26 inches for eye to eye, center to center. If you are replacing the springs and hangers you will need to use the same center to center dimension as the original mounting brackets. These springs are designed for a 4,500 pound axle. If you are building a new trailer you will need to determine the weight capacity of the axle you will be using and order springs and hangers...

  • Dimensions for Spring Hanger Spacing Using the # APTT3 Triple-Axle Hanger Kit on a Boat Trailer
  • The spring hanger mounting dimensions for the Triple-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit, item # APTT3, are as follows. From the center of the hole in the front hanger, to the center of the hole in the center front hanger, the distance should be 29-1/2 inches. From the center of the hole in the center front hanger, to the center of the hole in the center rear hanger, the distance should be 34 inches. And from the center of the hole in the center rear hanger, to the center of the hole in the rear...

  • Trailer Suspension Parts Needed to Increase Trailer Capacity from 7000 to 10000 lbs Gross Weight
  • Your best bet for upgrading the suspension on your trailer with 5,000 lb axles is to change out the springs from 1,750 lb capacity each to at least 2500 lb capacity each. Helper springs would not increase the capacity of your original suspension, they are designed to help your suspension handle loads up to the rated capacity of the suspension. If your trailer suspension is built with double eye springs you will need to measure the springs with no load on them from the spring eye center...

  • Recommended Hanger Spacing For 4-Leaf Springs # PR4 on Tandem Axle Trailer
  • You mention that you have a tandem axle with 3 inch axles. A 3 inch axle has a weight capacity rating of 6,000 lbs to 7,200 lbs. The leaf springs for that axle would be the part # PR5. These springs have a weight capacity of 2,900 lbs and are designed for 5,800-lb and 6,000-lb axles. The PR4 springs you have mentioned show a weight capacity of 2,400 lbs. So two of the # PR4 springs are designed for 4,800-lb to 5,000-lb axles. I would recommend to check the weight capacity of your axles...

  • Electric Brake Assembly Recommendations for a Tandem Axle Trailer with 5,200 Pound Axles
  • A 5,200 pound axle is most like a de-rated 6,000 pound axle so 12 x 2 inch brake assemblies are most likely correct. Measure the pad width and the inner diameter of the hub where the pads touch to determine if 12 x 2 is the correct size. I have also included a picture that shows the bolt hole measurements for the brakes you have referenced. If all of the measurements are the same as what you have then I would go with the Nev-R-Adjust brakes like # 23-458 and # 23-459. After the initial...

  • Trailer Spring Kit # 2-1020 Recommendation for an Old Boat Trailer Converted to a ATV Trailer
  • It sounds like you may have a vehicle leaf spring on your old boat trailer as we do not carry any leaf springs that are that length. The longest one we have is 27 inches long and is designed for 3,000 lb axles. That spring is the Redline Leaf Spring # PR427. The leaf spring that would closely match the axle capacity of your trailer would be the Redline Trailer Suspension # 1020. For a kit I would recommend a 3-Leaf, Double-Eye Spring Kit for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # 2-1020. You...

  • Can a 3,200 Pound Capacity Trailer Change to a 5,000 Pound Capacity by Changing Axle and Springs
  • Adding a higher capacity set of springs does not change the capacity of the trailer. The axle capacity will remain at 3,200 pounds. Like you said, you would have to replace the axle and springs for a higher capacity. This will also necessitate different wheels and tires that are rated higher as well because the new axle will have different hubs and you will need wheels to match and tires for the higher capacity. Some of the suspension components will probably need to be replaced as...

You may go up to the 6600 lb springs as long as the eye-to-eye length and the width will fit, but the higher capacity springs WILL NOT increase the weight capacity of your trailer. • Can a Trailer with 5,200 Pound Axles Use 5,800 Pound Double-Eye Leaf Springs
  • The failure of the leaf springs may be a result of another component in the system that has a problem and needs to be replaced. I recommend having a shop take a look at the suspension components to make sure everything is working correctly and nothing else needs to be replaced. Adding higher capacity springs will give you a stiffer ride, but if the trailer manufacturer determines it permissible considering the problems you have had in the past, you should be able to use the larger springs....

  • When Replacing Trailer Leaf Springs Go by the Weight Capacity of the Axle
  • Yes, when replacing trailer springs, you will want to go by the listed axle capacity of the springs. It would be best to replace both springs at the same time. I also recommend that you check other suspension components before installing new springs. The suspension is only as strong as its weakest link. Even though the # PR5 spring is rated at 6,000 pound axles, 3,000 per spring, you will still need to stay within the capacity of your axle at 5,000 pounds and not overload the trailer....
