Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The double-eye spring is suspended at the ends by hangers that attach to its eye or, in the case of tandem-axle or triple-axle systems, into hangers in the front and rear and an equalizer or equalizers in the center. To determine the type of hangers or hanger kit you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring you have, as well as your axle diameter and capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications.

Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension PR427 Review

Today we are going to be taking a look at part number PR424, the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,000-lb Axles. Before ordering a spring for your trailer, there are a few things you do need to know first. This spring measures 27 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide. You do need to know the springs half-length which is measured from the center of the eye mount to the center of the spring here at the leaf bolt. This spring has a 13 1-2 inch half-length. One measurement you will need to do is to measure the spring height. To do that, you will draw an imaginary line from the center of the mounting eye to the center of the mounting eye.

And using that imaginary line you will measure from it to the spring surface. In this case, it is 2 3/4 inches. You will notice that these springs has two 9/16 mounting points with nylon bushings. These nylon bushings help to prevent metal on metal contact while the spring is installed on the trailer. It does have 4 leaves in it giving it a 1,500-lb load capacity. When you multiply that by two, you get your 3,000-lb total load capacity per axle. And that does it for part number PR427, the 4-Leaf Double-Eyed Spring for 3,000-lb axles.

I purchased the 3000# axle springs and all mounting hardware to replace the old ones on my 1963 travel trailer. My trailer no longer leans to the left and goes down the road better than new. I should have done it many year ago. I received my package on time and installation was easy and fit perfect. Thanks Bridget 116826

The price was right and shipping was fast, and the video on measuring made it easy to be sure I was ordering the right part for my trailer. What's not to like? The only mistake I made was in not ordering all the hardware (U-Bolt kit, shackle bolts, and shackle straps) all at the same time. Although the videos say these parts can be reused, mine were rusty enough that they were really hard to get apart and then back together, even though they were only a year old. 41932

Great product at a great price!! Make sure to measure your shackle bolts....mine were 1/2" and these come with 9/16" nylon bushings. I had to place a new order for replacement 1/2" bushings. Not a big deal for me, but could have been a problem in a time crunch... 162232

Do you have a question about this Trailer Suspension?

  • Complete Spring, U-Bolts and Tube Shackle Bolts Kit
  • The Spring Kit for 2K Trailer Axles, part # 2-1020, includes the two sets of the 1-3/4 Round Trailer U-Bolts, part # SP01-020, two U-Bolt Plates for 1-3/4 RD Axle part # 116308, and two of the Trailer Leaf Springs, 1000 lbs 3 Leaf, part # 1020. The leaf spring is only 20-1/4 inches long. If you need a leaf spring that is 27 inches long and 1-3/4 inches wide, I recommend the Trailer Leaf Spring, part # PR427. With this spring, you would need the 2-1/2 inch Round U-Bolts, part # 175668, and...

  • Hanger Spacing for Trailer Double-Eye Leaf Spring PR427
  • Actually, the hanger spacing will need to be approximately 25-3/4 inches measuring on center. One end of the leaf spring will overshoot the hanger and the shackle makes up the difference. This allows both ends of the spring to be at the same or close height and allow the suspension to move like it needs to. I have included a link to our help article on double-eye suspension for you.

  • Double Eye Leaf Springs for Boat Trailer, Stretched Out
  • Before you can pick out a set of leaf springs for your boat you need to find out the weight rating of your trailer axle. Then you will need to purchase leaf springs that are each 1/2 of the axle rating. The # PR427 is rated for 1500 pounds so if your boat trailer axle is a 3000 pound axle then I would say that # PR427 is the correct leaf spring for your axle. Due to wear and different manufacturing tolerances the spring dimensions will be slightly different especially for length measurements....

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs for Ranger Boat Trailer with 3000-lb Axles
  • It is tough to get a correct eye-to-eye measurement on a double-eye leaf spring when the spring is still installed in the suspension. It is much better to measure for a replacement leaf spring by removing it first. Also, if a spring is very old and well-worn it can actually become longer than it was when new. Years of use can cause a leaf spring to elongate by as much as 1/2 to 3/4-inch. In a 1-3/4-inch wide double-eye spring rated for a 3000-lb axle, we offer the 4-leaf # PR427 which...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for Trailer Suspension Wore Out on One Side of Boat Trailer
  • The first thing you will want to check is the load on the trailer. If it is rated for 3,000 pounds then you will want to stay at or under that. Going with higher capacity springs will give the the exact problem you are experiencing. We carry 1 spring that is rated for 1500 pounds, # PR427. It measures 27 inches long from eye center to eye center. Always replace leaf springs in pairs. Otherwise the axle can get out of alignment which is what might have happen when the tire was rubbing...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Recommendation for a Single Axle Ranger Boat Trailer
  • The way to pick out a leaf spring for a trailer is to go with the one that will match the axle capacity needed and is the correct length. For you the part # PR4 is the correct one to use. It is for a 4,800 lb axle (close enough) and has an overall length of 25-1/4 inches. Leaf springs tend to stretch out over time so yours new would have been this exact length most likely. The height of this spring is 3 inches.

  • Replacement Double-Eye Leaf Springs Recommendation
  • The longest double leaf spring we offer is part # PR427, and has 4 leaves. This leaf spring measures 27 inches center of eye to center of eye. This fits an axle with a capacity of 3,000 lbs. You should measure the center of the spring eye-to-eye and choose a leaf spring replacement about an inch shorter. If you are replacing older leaf springs, the eye to eye dimension may be a little longer on the old spring due to sag and wear. For a 3 leaf spring and for a 2,500 lb trailer axle, you...

  • Trailer Spring Kit # 2-1020 Recommendation for an Old Boat Trailer Converted to a ATV Trailer
  • It sounds like you may have a vehicle leaf spring on your old boat trailer as we do not carry any leaf springs that are that length. The longest one we have is 27 inches long and is designed for 3,000 lb axles. That spring is the Redline Leaf Spring # PR427. The leaf spring that would closely match the axle capacity of your trailer would be the Redline Trailer Suspension # 1020. This is designed for a 3,000 lb axle and may give you a really stiff ride. Another option would be to choose a leaf spring that is rated for 2,000 lb axles like part # 1020 and then weld on a new hanger because the eye center to eye center length for this leaf spring is 20-1/4 inches.
