Double-Eye Spring

Part NumberABC
PR42727"2-3/4"13-1/2"

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The double-eye spring is suspended at the ends by hangers that attach to its eye or, in the case of tandem-axle or triple-axle systems, into hangers in the front and rear and an equalizer or equalizers in the center. To determine the type of hangers or hanger kit you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring you have, as well as your axle diameter and capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications.

Please Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension PR427 Review

Today we are going to be taking a look at part number PR424, the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,000-lb Axles. Before ordering a spring for your trailer, there are a few things you do need to know first. This spring measures 27 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide. You do need to know the springs half-length which is measured from the center of the eye mount to the center of the spring here at the leaf bolt. This spring has a 13 1-2 inch half-length. One measurement you will need to do is to measure the spring height. To do that, you will draw an imaginary line from the center of the mounting eye to the center of the mounting eye.

And using that imaginary line you will measure from it to the spring surface. In this case, it is 2 3/4 inches. You will notice that these springs has two 9/16 mounting points with nylon bushings. These nylon bushings help to prevent metal on metal contact while the spring is installed on the trailer. It does have 4 leaves in it giving it a 1,500-lb load capacity. When you multiply that by two, you get your 3,000-lb total load capacity per axle. And that does it for part number PR427, the 4-Leaf Double-Eyed Spring for 3,000-lb axles.

I purchased the 3000# axle springs and all mounting hardware to replace the old ones on my 1963 travel trailer. My trailer no longer leans to the left and goes down the road better than new. I should have done it many year ago. I received my package on time and installation was easy and fit perfect. Thanks Bridget 116826

The price was right and shipping was fast, and the video on measuring made it easy to be sure I was ordering the right part for my trailer. What's not to like? The only mistake I made was in not ordering all the hardware (U-Bolt kit, shackle bolts, and shackle straps) all at the same time. Although the videos say these parts can be reused, mine were rusty enough that they were really hard to get apart and then back together, even though they were only a year old. 41932

Received exactly what I ordered and fast too. I have ordered from etrailer before and spent some time searching for best price on these springs, just to make sure their prices were good. Save yourself some time and just use etrailer, they're the best. I would definitely recommend them. 57098

The leaf springs were just what I needed, they mounted up perfectly. The only problem I have is the old ones were so flattened that with the new leaf springs, I have to buy a new hitch with less drop, thanks. 85671

Review from a similar Redline Trailer Leaf Spring

I just wanted to let you know what a GREAT experience it has been ordering from your company. I have never had a company check up or keep me as informed on what was happening with my order. It is a great relief to know that there are still some companies that care and are not just interested in "a sale." I have attached some pictures of the old springs I took off and the new one's. The old ones were stretched flat with my dump trailer empty. When I put the new ones on it even raised the trailer up at least 4 inches. 29072

Review from a similar Redline Trailer Leaf Spring

Once again, etrailer was fantastic. Their website had all the information I needed. Before last week I had no idea what a leaf spring system was, all I knew was that whatever that thing was on the bottom of my camper was snapped in two and I needed to fix it. Did some research on etrailer.com, it walked me through how to take the measurements and what I needed to look for. I took the measurements and found the product that fit my camper. As I always do, I shopped around, and once again, etrailers price was the best by far. I placed the order on a Friday morning and received a very nice email that afternoon from etrailer thanking me for being a repeat customer and notifying me they had expedited the shipping of my products and they left the warehouse that same day. Showed up on my porch the following Wednesday. Amazing customer service! I ordered the leaf springs, ubolts, shackles and shackle bots needed to replace the springs on both sides of my camper. When I opened the box, everything I ordered was in there and looking great. They shipped exactly what I needed, when I needed it at a price that couldn't be matched anywhere. Everything looks great, haven't had a chance to get them on the road yet, but I'm sure it will be top notch when I do. Thanks again etrailer! 97447

Review from a similar Redline Trailer Leaf Spring

First the Good- The 4 leaf springs and mounting hardware that I ordered for a custom trailer set up arrived quickly and with all the correct equipment. It was with the free shipping so it took about 5 business days to reach me. That was over all amazing for half the cost over local retailers in my home area. So the good was better then good... down right amazing even. Now the not so good- I am not trying to be picky but I received 2 boxes with a total of 4 leaf springs and 2 hanger kits and some mount plates. 1 box was perfectly packaged with plenty of stuff inside to maintain accountability of all items inside. The other box was a train wreck with 2 of the leaf springs half out of the box. Leaving the paint all scratch up. Again in the hanger kits that I order 1 box was perfectly packaged while the other one was just thrown in together making it difficult to account for all items. Overall I am happy with the products I ordered I know that leaf springs are not dainty, fragile things. So I am not too concerned about the integrity of them. However I would recommend to etrailer.com to improve on packaging so items do not get lost or damaged in the future. 156489

Review from a similar Redline Trailer Leaf Spring

I found a hard to find part, ordered it on a Sunday, and got an e-mail message the same day telling me it was being shipped out that same day. Can you beat that? I then ordered some additional parts (on the following Sunday) and got a call (a couple of days later) telling me that the parts were not in stock, but would be in stock shortly. When I explained that the parts were going to arrive too late, arrangements were made to have the supplier ship directly to me. Not only that, but the parts arrived the NEXT DAY! And I thought good old customer service was dead. As to the parts, I don't know leaf springs. These were pictured in Black and came in in Black. They were supposed to be 3-leaf springs, and they came in 3-leaf springs. They were supposed to 20 1/4" and they came in 20 1/4". They are leafy and springy. So, I guess they are good. But, don't forget about the customer service! Amazing! After reading the suggestions for a great review, I guess that I should ass that the springs are going on a trailer. There, did I do it right? 146630

Placed my order on Thursday at 8 AM. Order was received on Friday at 3:30 PM. The lady that took my order was friendly and answered all my questions. I ordered 4 PR6 ,3500 lb. springs with U-bolt kits for 6000 lb . axles. The old set up had 3000 lb springs, 1 main leaf had broken and 2 were almost straight. I had 7/16 difference in center line measurements from side to side. After installing the new springs and U-bolts the center line measurements are within 1/32 side to side. I will tell everyone about your company. Great service and products. etrailer.com is the place to go. 52211

Positive Experience I recommend etrailer. the price was better than I'd seen locally or online, although it happens that the size and type I needed was a particularly good deal. The service and shipping were surprisingly prompt, and when the box arrived, everything was as advertised. While replacing four leaf springs is about as much fun as shopping for socks, etrailer at least made ordering a positive experience. I actually found the video helpful as well. I've included a picture of what mine actually looked like. A breaker bar is a very handy tool. 5603

Comments

I have a question, Ive. Measured my springs to be 26. 14 to the center of each bolt, however the springs are nearly gone so can I safely say that my springs measurement should be 25 1/4?

comment by: DAVID D - 08/23/2013

1947

If there very old and have spent some time overloaded, they certainly could flatten and end up an inch longer than original. It may be helpful to take some of the other measurements on the the spring, and check the information on the axle to find its weight rating. That will make it significantly easier to find appropriate springs.

If you need trailer parts etrailer is the place to get them. Trying to get all parts needed locally proved to be both impossible(from one vendor) and very expensive. After looking online etrailer seemed very reasonable. Free shipping after $150 also seemed great. So I decided to order wishing I could have found the parts locally, so that I could have the trailer put together by the weekend. After placing the order I was suprised to get an immediate confirmation and a notice of immediate shipment. After ordering the parts late tuesday, I received the parts by lunch time on thursday and finding the parts to be as ordered. Needless to say I am extremely satisfied with etrailer and will be saving the order information for all of my future needs. Thanks etrailer for such professional service. 6980

These leaf srpings were a perfect size replacement for replacing the suspension on my tandem axles boat trailer. My painted steel boat trailer had been exposed to saltwater, so the entire suspension was completely rusted & falling apart. Thanks to the great articles, videos, & documentation here on etrailer, I was able to find exactly what I needed to replace my all leaf springs & hardware, & which measurements to take to ensure I ordered the correct parts. Everything fit perfectly, & there was no need to make a run to a local auto parts store for forgotten parts, thanks to etrailer's articles & complete list of needed suspension components. Everything was a great price, shipped free, & delivered in 3 days. These guys/site is great, will def buy from again. A+++ 124130

Excellent, I ordered all the springs and hardware to completely respring my tandem axle Travel Trailer. Everything was perfect, in addition I ordered an above axle lift kit for it, I got about 6 inches of lift as advertised. I pulled the axles out from under the trailer, and welded the seats to the axle, this lift and hardware replacement took my son and I only 5 hours, including a complete wheel bearing pack and seal replacement. Beautiful job, and everything fit perfectly, even the bearing buddies fit perfectly!!!!!!!!!! Plus, I got all the parts in 5 working days, from Illinois to Montana, all with free expedited shipping. Doesn't get any better than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 90870

Product was great. arrived early. But it was the wrong size, greatly in part, my fault. I measured the lenght of the leafs instead of the lenght from eye to eye center. Wish during the ordering processes it was explained on how to measure. I have looked at wheels and wheel bolt patern and the instructions for ordering the correct bolt patern there are great. I am sure its probably common knowledge with those that deal with leafs on a regular basis but for those of us that will order this only maybe once in a life time, measuring instructions would have been greatly appreciated. Loved how customer service was always in contact and still is after delivery. 26134

Item shipped VERY quickly. Video tutorials on the web site helped a lot. This leaf spring looks a lot better than the ones originally installed on my trailer. I think eTrailer will be getting more business from me cause from what I saw under the trailer the components the builder used did not look like top-shelf parts. Will probably eventually replace all components with eTrailer ones. Installation would have been easy had the trailer manufacturer not welded the ends of the shackle bolts forcing me to cut the off and then have to go buy new ones. 43225

Delivery was very prompt sooner than expected. The information your site provided was spot on. I was able to find a more durable tire for a trailer we are pushing the tire limits. And increase the spring rating by only 500lb fisrt time I've seen off the shelf springs offered in such finite sizes. Though we load within the limits of our trailers this particular unit is at the top of the load range. The slightly heavier parts give me confidents we'll get where we want to go. • Double Eye Leaf Springs for Boat Trailer, Stretched Out
  • Before you can pick out a set of leaf springs for your boat you need to find out the weight rating of your trailer axle. Then you will need to purchase leaf springs that are each 1/2 of the axle rating. The # PR427 is rated for 1500 pounds so if your boat trailer axle is a 3000 pound axle then I would say that # PR427 is the correct leaf spring for your axle. Due to wear and different manufacturing tolerances the spring dimensions will be slightly different especially for length measurements....

  • The first thing you will want to check is the load on the trailer. If it is rated for 3,000 pounds then you will want to stay at or under that. Going with higher capacity springs will give the the exact problem you are experiencing. We carry 1 spring that is rated for 1500 pounds, # PR427. It measures 27 inches long from eye center to eye center. Always replace leaf springs in pairs. Otherwise the axle can get out of alignment which is what might have happen when the tire was rubbing...

  • How to Determine the Correct Leaf Spring Replacements for a 1975 Rolco Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
  • It may be possible that your leaf springs flattened out from 27 inches, but the only 27 inch double eye leaf springs we offer are part # PR427 and are designed for 3,000 lb axles. Using these springs would reduce your weight carrying capacity to 3,000 lbs per axle. The longest leaf springs we carry for 3,500 lb axle is 25-1/4 inches long, part # PR4B. If you can tell me the distance between your leaf spring hangers on center, I would be happy to tell you which leaf springs and shackle...

  • How to Determine the Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a 1985 Rustler 2-H Montrose BP Trailer
  • To find the correct replacement leaf springs for your 1985 Rustler tandem axle trailer you will need to measure the spring with the weight off of it. You can do this by either removing a spring or by jacking up one side of trailer and measuring the spring on that side. I have included a picture showing the important measurements for a double-eye leaf spring. To get the best information on the axle capacity there should be a sticker or plate on the trailer frame/tongue somewhere with...

  • Leaf Spring Replacement Recommendation for a Boat Trailer with a 3000 lb Axle
  • The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # PR427 that you referenced that is 27 inches long should work well for you. Typically you want the spring a little bit shorter than the hanger distance (about 1/2 inch) but you're close enough that it should work just fine. I attached an FAQ article on trailer suspension for you to check out also.

  • Replacement Double-Eye Leaf Springs Recommendation
  • The longest double leaf spring we offer is part # PR427, and has 4 leaves. This leaf spring measures 27 inches center of eye to center of eye. This fits an axle with a capacity of 3,000 lbs. You should measure the center of the spring eye-to-eye and choose a leaf spring replacement about an inch shorter. If you are replacing older leaf springs, the eye to eye dimension may be a little longer on the old spring due to sag and wear. For a 3 leaf spring and for a 2,500 lb trailer axle, you...

  • Should the Space Between Tandem Axle Trailer Tires Be the Same On Both Sides of the Trailer
  • Is there more weight on one side of the trailer? If so, you would want to make sure the load is distributed evenly from side to side. Are you on level ground when you measured the distance between the tires? If not, that would cause one side of the suspension to have more of a load on it. I would measure the distance between the spring hangers on both sides just to make sure the problem is the springs and not where they are attached on your trailer. If everything checks out it might...

  • Vintage Trailer Suspension Replacement Recommendations
  • Going to a higher rated spring will not give you higher rated axles. The axles themselves have their own rating independent of the springs. So going to a higher rated spring would only increase your trailer capacity if they were the weakest link prior to replacement. That being said, your current springs are 28 inches long so you will want to pick out a spring that is slightly shorter than that as springs tend to stretch over time. The part # PR427 would be the best candidate as it is...

  • Leaf Spring and Hanger Kit Recommendation for a Single Axle Trailer to Replace 37 inch Springs
  • The longest double eye spring we carry is the # PR427 that is 27 inches long and is the standard 1-3/4 inches wide. The best solution I could provide for you would be to replace the hangers you have now with something compatible with 1-3/4 inch springs and then go with a spring we offer that would work with those hangers. To pick out a spring you will want to pick out a spring properly rated for the weight of your trailer. Check out the link I attached to the right that has a chart with...

  • How to Find the Length of a Leaf Spring on a 1985 Rustler 2 Horse Trailer
  • It is best to measure trailer leaf springs without a load on them. It would be best to remove the spring from the trailer completely, otherwise you could jack the trailer up. That will give you the most accurate center eye to center eye length measurements. The next factor that you will want to consider is that springs flatten out over time. If these are the original springs and they measure 27 inches from eye to eye, the original length could have been around 25 to 26 inches. If...

  • Correct Double-Eye Leaf Springs For Seabird Boat Trailer
  • Since leaf springs can flatten out a bit over time it is best to measure trailer leaf springs with no load on them. The best way would be to remove the spring from the trailer completely. Another way would be to jack the trailer up, taking weight off the springs you have installed. That will give you the most accurate center eye to center eye length measurements. The # PR427 is rated for 1500 pounds so if your boat trailer axle is a 3000 pound axle then most likely part # PR427 is the...

  • Leveling a 5th Wheel Trailer that Leans to One Side
  • I recommend adding some suspension enhancement that is going to help keep the trailer level. We have several options available for trailers and I have included a link to them for you. This will also help improve the overall ride quality and extend the life of the stock suspension. Since you have 2 axles you would need to use 2 kits. Also, you would not want to use the springs on just one side because then you will have the same problem on the opposite side! I do not recommend using different...
