Video Transcript for Bulldog Camper Jack BD500161 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set. Now this unit is perfect for raising, leveling, and supporting your fifth wheel trailer or RV. It's going to feature the dual, electric jacks that elevate and lower with the flip of a switch, so no more hand cranking. Each motor has its own toggle switch for independent operation and accurate leveling. This right here is your control panel. It's a really nice design.

I really like the way it looks. It's got your operations for both the left jack, and right jack, so really nice design. All the wiring's there on the back. Now the unit comes with a detailed wiring diagram as well. That way you can easily get everything connected correctly. Now there's going to be two different settings for the unit.

You're going to have high-speed and high-torque. You can choose whichever setting you want for your application. You'll do that during the wiring part of your installation according to those included instructions. I also want to mention that the orientation of the motor can be flipped to best fit the space available for your application. Each jack is going to come with a drop leg. Now a drop leg is going to increase overall extension for maximum adjustability.

Your jack has an outer tube, an inner tub, and a drop leg. It's also going to have the spring-loaded pull pins right here. Now you always want to make sure these are facing out or to the side of the trailer. That way they're always easily accessible. Those are included.

They install on there very easily, and those spring-loaded pull pins allow for fast and easy operation of that drop leg. The unit is also going to feature heavy gauge, self-leveling foot plates for excellent stability. Nice, large design, so it's really going to help spread out the applied weight. Especially on softer surfaces to help prevent sinking. That self-leveling design means that it has the ability to tilt a little bit depending on the ground that you're setting these down on. We're looking at a sturdy steel construction and heavy-duty die-cast gear boxes that are built to last. We're going to have clear, zinc-coated inner tubes and black-painted outer tubes that are designed to resist corrosion and last a long time. Each leg has independent motor, that each draw at maximum load of 25 amps of current. This limit is determined by the sets two manual reset circuit breakers that are located right here on the control panel, right next to the switches. Those are easily accessible as well. Now with the unit, you can see everything that you're going to get. I do want to point out that it does come with four brand new mounting brackets, and four sets of mounting hardware. You're going to get the toggle switches, wiring harness. Really nice design. I do want to mention real quick, just a little bit about these weld-on brackets. Now I have them set up according to what's recommended in the instructions, so this one is on top of the weld stops. This one is on the bottom of the weld stops. Now I understand that each application, each trailer may call for a little bit of a different set-up, so you do have a little bit of flexibility there, but I do recommend installing it according to the included instructions. The weld stops are only on two sides of the jacks, so please keep that in mind. That allows you to maybe orient the jack in a way that's going to work best for your particular trailer, and your particular application. Really nice design though. Four weld stops per jack, and again you're going to get the brand-new weld on brackets. It also comes with an emergency override crank bolt that's going to operate the unit manually by using a socket and wrench. It goes in this area right here and that is included. Now when it comes to the total lift for this unit, you're going to get a total lift of 36", 18" of screw travel, and then 18" of drop leg travel. Travel per minute is 9". The outer tube measures 2 1/2" by 2 1/2", and the combined support capacity is 10,000 pounds. When it comes to the lift capacity, the combined lift capacity, in the high speed setting is 7,000 pounds, and the high torque setting is 10,000 pounds. Now a few measurements I want to mention for you real quick, the distance between these welded on stop brackets is 15 1/2". The distance from the top of this bracket to the bottom of this bracket is 17 1/2". Your foot plate, that measures 8" long by 6" wide, and then the clearance that you have with the motor in this orientation, from the top of the welded on stop bracket to the top of the motor is 12 1/2". From the bottom of that welded on stop bracket to the top of the motor is 13 1/2" and again, the orientation can be flipped to best fit your space. That's going to do it for today's look at the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set.

This product held a lot of promise, but I'm not thrilled with the final result. 1. The instructions say to use the template that is included to cut the hole for the switch panel. No template was included. 2. The switch plate is a flimsy piece of plastic with an even lower quality label attached. In order to get the switch plate to mount flush with the RV, I had to drill additional holes in the plastic. 3. When you screw the plate to the RV, the cheap plastic label tears and looks really bad. 4. Once the plastic plate was mounted to the RV, the switches kept popping out of the plastic every time you'd use them. They are not bolted to the plastic backing plate, but simply pressed in with an inadequate clip to hold them. 5. The unit comes set for high torque applications, but you can also set it for high speed. The instructions show that you must place the motors in a different configuration that what it is delivered with. But there are no instructions on how to remove the motor to reconfigure it. Hint: If you want to change to the high speed application, there is a drift pin that you must remove first. Then you can lift the motor off the shaft, reposition it, and reinstall the drift pin. 6. When it was all installed, the motors wiggle and oscillate horribly on top of the jacks. I wish I could attach a video of this. There is no way with that much movement that the unit will be as robust as advertised. Also, the only thing that holds the motor to the jack is the little drift pin on top of the drive shaft. There has to be a much better way to accomplish this task. On a good note, the jacks did fit in place of my old landing gear and no modifications were needed to the clamps or frame. They bolted right in. Also, once everything was in place, they were much faster than my old landing gear. I would not recommend purchase of these jacks. 91919

Overall this was a great purchase. I replaced my factory original single motor landing jacks on my 2007 38' 5th wheel toy hauler with these individual jacks. I used the "fast" setting, and the jacks lifted my camper probably 2-3 times faster than the shaft mated factory jacks which could not be operated individually. Even on the "fast" setting the motors and wiring never get hot during operation, which tells me they're not being overstressed, even on my 17000 GVW trailer. My only complaint was that one of the two jacks operated very smoothly and quietly, while the second still operated smooth and at the same speed, but was very loud and had alot of gear noise. No idea why that was, but it never seemed to hurt operation. I've since sold the trailer and bought a new one, which has the same jacks as my old trailer. I'll likely be installing these again on my new trailer! 338567

This product exceeded my expectations. I own a very heavy pin weight toy hauler 5th wheel and the 6k single motor lift struggled to raise or lower it and the hand crank was literately useless when the motor broke down on me camping a couple of weeks ago. I did a lot of research before purchasing this product and after a very easy install I tried raising and lowering the coach and I was all smiles. These landing gear have zero struggle and are super quiet. They lift my coach so easily that I may try switching them to the speed setting just to see how it goes. And, as an added bonus i can now level the coach side to side. Awesome!! I would recommend this product to anyone. Etrailer.com was excellent to work with, very helpful on any questions I had. Quick shipping and very informative every step of the process. 101461

Got the product and its a great package, with some exceptions. I agree the front plate for the switches is flimsy and it was bent and scratched with little protection in the packaging. I was also disappointed that the entire KIT didn't come with a wiring harness. But hey... for the price and the well built gear. I will get past it. The legs fit my 2010 Heartland Cyclone without modification, But the one behind the gen... geez. You think heartland would have built in access to that leg ... even for maintenance. Oh, hey the directions do not tell you to grease anything... make sure you grease the bearing on the side top leg screw. 156216

Let me tell you about etrailer. These folks have the best, no the greatest service! I asked a question on there site and had the totally wrong product. They contacted me with the best product I needed. They had research my 5th wheel RV and there is more than a few on the market...lol. This is the forth product I have ordered from them and all has been sport on to fit properly. Plus video on installation. Gosh, I can not say enough. Well just a little more. These bull dog legs make the manufactures legs look leke tinker toys. RG 337653

Fit these to my keystone sprinter after the original gear was buckled in a windstorm Christmas day. Much heavier and the fit was better than factory using the original brackets, absolutely no slop and the leg stops are welded on, not simply stamped out notches. Had to flip the motors over to fit. No problem there. Only complaint is they only given you a foot of wire on the new switch panel. Would have been great if they gave you enough to actually wire in everything without having to splice in more wire. 328794

Love the bulldog landing gear for my fifth wheel camper the dual motors make a lot of sense well built and great warranty.took about 4 hours to install it could be made easier to install if they would provide a plug and play wire harness so the install is fairly complicated and i got lucky did not have to weld on new brackets so if you want this sweet set up go for it you can't go wrong 101770

I have just received my landing gear and have not had the opportunity to install it yet. I have unpacked all of the parts and inventoried everything and it all seems to be here and in good shape. the instructions look pretty much straight forward and should not be to difficult to install. etrailer has been great in their responce to my order and shipping. Thanks 104083

The landing gear arrived very quickly (2 days). Because the motor is mounted on top of the landing gear, I had to cut a notch in the plate the propane tanks rest on so I could jocky them in place. The weld stops fit very snugly between the existing mounting brackets on the trailer and should not shift at all. I am very pleased with how they operate. 229375

This is an excellent product! The original landing gear on our 34' Attitude was always giving us trouble...just not enough power. After replacing the gearbox 3 times I decided to install the Bulldog landing gear. They have all the power you will ever need to raise your 5th wheel and they are very "sweet" operating! And they were easy to install. 316079

by: Motohead08/16/2016

They work great. I like operating them independently. Good power using the lower gear ratio. My pin weight is just over 4,000 lbs. Uneven ground would put more than 2,000 lbs. on a single jack. I also relocated the operating switches on a mounting plate and used the existing jack switch compartment to keep them dry. 284234

by: Timothy G04/13/2016

Install was a challenge, but we were able to install them with out removing the generator and the generator compartment. Instructions easy to follow and read. They do not struggle to lift my trailer as my stock ones did. I do not have to worry if they will fail, like my old ones did twice. Very happy with them. 244125

Excellent product, easy installation on 35' ragen trailer. No problem with the mounting hardware or wiring. The only thing is, the way I had to install them I could not use the hi speed setting because the frame interfered, but even on torque setting they still perform twice as fast as factory landing gear. 250255

purchased these jacks when the oem's failed on the RV. shipping was quick and seamless. all parts included, very robust design and operation and very! quiet. I ordered a set of Bulldog landing jacks for my 5th wheel for the lowest price I could find anywhere else. They shipped on time and arrived as promised. When I installed incorrectly and damaged part, they replaced it, no questions asked. Will definitely use in the future! 338035

Very good quality and easy to wire up. They were a little labor intensive mainly due to the manufacturer of my 5th wheel. I have a 43' toy hauler and the stock jacks struggled to lift the coach. Once I installed these i raised the trailer with ease. 259095

Works as it should. I set it in higher speed mode. Had to modify top bracket to make it fit my installation. Also modified spring pin for legs by removing about 1/4" with a grinder. I would definitely recommend this product. 152505

Excellent product and great service from etrailer.com. Would have been nice if Bulldog provided wiring for the kit. You will need to buy approximately 40' of 10 GA wire and connectors to complete the project. 176558

  • There are a couple of things that need to be considered for installation of the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear, part # BD500161. The welded stops that are on the legs of this landing gear are in specific locations, and require the brackets on your trailer to be attached in corresponding positions so that the landing gear does not shift when installed. Stromberg Carlson makes the Venture landing gear, that is the brands are different but the jacks are the same. I cannot recommend you install a Bulldog motorized follow leg to go with your Venture lead leg. This leg has 29-9/16 inch tall outer tube and 15 1/2 inches between mounting brackets. The only other option would be to replace your current landing gear with the landing gear...

  • How to Pick Out RV Landing Gear that Will Bolt Up to Trailer
  • To pick out landing gear that will bolt right up to your 2011 Keystone Cougar 291RLS will require you to measure the distance between the mounting brackets (underside of top bracket to top of lower bracket as shown in the diagram). If that distance is 17-1/2 inches then you would want to go with a Bulldog set like the part # BD500161. The jacks would be the correct replacement for Lippert, Venture, and Atwood landing gear, as well as those from a few other manufacturers. If your frame...

  • How Does the Bulldog 10k Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set Install on a Trailer
  • Installation for the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set, # BD500161, is very straight forward. For the jacks themselves, the 2 brackets per jack will get welded to the vertical part of the trailer frame. This will not require drilling into the frame to mount the brackets. The legs of the jacks then attach to the brackets. The control panel can be mounted anywhere that is convenient to you. The wiring seems complicated but really it is just power and ground for the switches and...

  • Difference Between Bulldog BD500170 and BD500161 Fifth Wheel Landing Gear
  • The only difference between the two Bulldog Landing Gear kits, BD500170 and # BD500161 is the weight capacity. The BD500170 has a 7000 lb capacity, while the BD500161 has a 10000 lb capacity. The BD500170 has been discontinued and is no longer available. When mounted, either jack will have a 17-1/2 inch distance between the bottom of the upper frame clamp to the top of the lower frame clamp. The jacks do include frame clamps, so if the frame clamps on your existing landing gear don't...

  • Replacement Part Availability for Venture VMC900L Landing Gear
  • The internal parts (screw and nut) on your Venture landing gear are not available as replacement parts but we may have a replacement leg. We carry several legs that could potentially work. Lead: # LC119102 (outer tube is 29-1/2 inches overall) Follow: # LG-179014 (outer tube is 29-1/2 inches overall) If these match what you have then replacing the leg is the way to go.

  • Replacement Bulldog Landing Gear Recommendation for Prowler 5th Wheel
  • For a manual crank set of landing gear by Bulldog you would want the part # BD500162 that has an 8k lifting capacity. For a powered set you would want the part # BD500161. I attached a picture that shows the dimensions of the legs of the jacks for you to compare to what you have on your trailer. The Bulldog stuff works great and typically fits as a replacement for most landing gear sets on trailers. The dimension picture shows the powered jacks, but the important measurements apply to...

  • Will Bulldog 10k Electric Landing Gear Fit a Crossroads Cross Terrain Trailer
  • Bulldog makes a high quality and sturdy set of landing gear. I recently had the 12K model out of the box to check on the legs for a different customer and it is a solid set. To determine if the 10K set, # BD500161, is going to work for you take a look at the bracket height and lift specs. When retracted the bracket height is 29-13/32 inches and when extended 65-3/16 inches. You get a total lift amount of 36 inches. The drop leg makes up 18 inches and the other 18 inches is from the actual...

  • Recommended Electric landing Gear For 30-Ft Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • If the measurement for the tabs you mentioned are taken from the tabs welded on the trailer then the landing gear i recommend for you is the Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set, part # BD500161. This landing gear features 18-inches of lift and with the 18-inches for the drop leg gives you a total of 36-inches of travel. The combined weight capacity for this landing gear is 10,000-lbs.

  • Tandem Landing Gear Recommendations For Thor Vortex Toy Hauler RV
  • When the 10000 lb Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear, part # BD500161 is installed, the motors are facing each other. This means less space is needed when installing these landing gears. Should you lose power, there is a manual adjustment on these landing gears. I have attached a photo that shows where the included tool is inserted. As the photo shows, a ratchet is then attached to the tool and allows you to adjust the landing gear manually. Another option would be the Stromberg...

  • Replacement Landing Gear Recommendation for a 2006 Keystone Raptor
  • You most likely have Lippert 6k landing gear like the powered set part # LC333964 that is also 6k rated. Landing gear is rated for lifting capacity and not for overall trailer capacity. So the landing gear on your trailer could very easily be rated at 6k since most of the weight of the trailer will be over the wheels and not the jack. For a 10k rated powered set the Bulldog part # BD500161 would also be a great option for you to consider as well.

  • Will Bulldog 10K Landing Gear Fit a 2009 Sundance 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Since the landing gear is placed more towards the front of a trailer it will not be lifting the whole weight of the trailer. The 10,000 pound Bulldog system, # BD500161, should work well for you; much better than the 4k rated system that you have now. I have linked the installation instructions to the right.

  • Do the Bulldog Landing Gear part # BD500161 Require Grease Maintenance
  • I spoke to my contact at Bulldog and he said that the Bulldog Landing Gear part # BD500161 are pre-greased from the factory and don't require you to follow any lubrication maintenance schedule. Most people just install them and they don't worry about greasing them. If you wanted to be as proactive as possible with greasing the legs you would want to take the feet off of the legs and shoot grease up into the assembly with spray grease. Otherwise once these are installed it would be pretty...

  • Will 10K Bulldog Electric 5th Wheel Landing Gear Set Fit in Place of a 6.5K Set
  • I spoke with my contact at Bulldog and he informed me that the 6.5k, 7k, and 10k landing gear sets uses the same mounting brackets so you can switch out the one you have with a higher capacity. On the 10k the overall height of the entire unit will be 4 inches taller than the one you have. The motor is 7-5/8 inches tall overall.

  • Replacement Landing Gear Recommendation for a 2004 Keystone Montana Big Sky
  • If you have 17-1/2 inches between the inside of the frame clamps on your current landing gear setup (or 17-1/2 inches from outside to outside of the weld stops on your trailer) the Bulldog Landing Gear Set part # BD500161 would fit without having to weld new stops on your trailer.

  • Can Bulldog Powered 5th Wheel Trailer Landing Gear be Operated Manually
  • Yes, you can manually raise and lower the Bulldog landing gear, # BD500161, in the event of a power failure or something else. There is a spot on top of the jacks where you can attach a wrench to and turn it to raise or lower the jack. This will work in a pinch but it is slower than the motor is. I have included a link to a video review and a picture of the jack showing the location of the manual operation area.

  • Landing Gear Jack Recommendations for a Livestock Trailer
  • If you are considering a dual jack setup like the part # BD500162 that's what I would recommend. Two jacks will offer more stability and since two jacks will be doing the lifting instead of one the cranking will be a bit easier as well. The easiest to use setup will be a powered landing gear set though as it would only require you to press a button. For that the Bulldog part # BD500161 would be a great option.
