Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums 42866UC3 Review

Today were going to review part number 42866UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly 8 on 6-1/2-inch bolt pattern. This trailer Hub and Drum Assembly will include the eight 1/2-inch cone seat lug nuts. It will include the inner bearing, part number 25580, the outer bearing part number 14125A, it will include the 2-1/4 grease seal and the grease cap. The races, the bearing races are also included and they will be actually preinstalled into the hub. The outer race would be right here.

The inner race would be right in there. All of our Hub and Drum Assemblies will come with the races preinstalled. The application for this Hub and Drum Assembly is for most 5200 to 7000-lb Dexter axles with spindles that will require either a 2-1/8 inch grease seal or a 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal. The drum dimension is 12 inches diameter by 2 inches wide. The bolt pattern is an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

The stud diameter is 1/2 inch. This Hub and Drum Assembly will fit on spindles that are either 2-1/8 or 2-1/4. It does come with the 2-1/4 inch inside diameter grease seal. If you do need the 2-1/8 seal you will need to use part number 10-1. The capacity on this assembly is 3500 lbs.

So when this is used with another assembly on the other side it will give you the maximum capacity of 7000 lbs. Now just a couple dimensions. The bolt pattern is an 8 on 6-1/2 inch which means eight lugs, 6-1/2 inch diameter and basically the way to measure that usually on a bolt pattern that is an even number of lugs like in this case eight. You just measure directly across from the center of one to the center of the other. Thats 6-1/2 but its hard to do because of this higher hub in the middle.

So if you just measure from a one wheel stud next to the other wheel stud and if it measures 2-1/2 inches that would also mean its an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The other dimension would be the drum dimension which is 12-inch diameter and 2 inches wide. So 12-inch diameter on the inside would be 12 inches, the diameter is 2 inches. And that should do it for our review on part number 42866UC3.

  • Is There a Replacement Hub for My Mobile Home Axle
  • In order to determine which hub will fit the spindle, you will either need the bearing numbers from the bearings from that spindle, or you can take some precise measurements on the different steps on the spindle using a dial caliper to get precise measurements. Often times it is not possible to find replacement parts for mobile home axles as they are designed for one time use. In most cases replacement parts are simply not available. However, if you can find the bearing numbers or collect the

  • What is the Inner Diameter of Trailer Bearing # 25580 and Trailer Bearing # 14125A
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled bearing # 25580, and # 14125A, to measure them. Bearing # 25580 has an inner diameter of 1.74 inches. Bearing # 14125A has an inner diameter of 1.225 inches. I used digital dial calipers to take the measurements.

  • What Information is Needed to Pick Out the Correct Replacement Hub and Drum
  • In order to determine which replacement hub and drum you would need to replace your current parts, you will need to either get the numbers that are stamped on your bearings, or you will need to get some precise measurements from your spindle. The measurements you need will be where the seal and bearings ride. Check out the picture I attached to see which measurements are needed. I attached a video on removing and reinstalling trailer hubs for you to check out also.

  • Trailer Wheel Pilot Hole Diameter is Too Small for New Hub and Drum Assemblies
  • If the pilot hole on the wheel was larger than 4-3/4 inches, and the wheel is center on the hub using the lug nut rather than wheel bolts, it would not matter. But since the wheel pilot hole is smaller, you will not be able to use the hubs you purchased without also replacing the wheels. I went out to the warehouse and measured a Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 42866UC3, to determine the diameter of the center portion that goes through the pilot hole of the wheel. Using some digital dial cal
