Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Toyota Tacoma - Hidden Hitch

Today on this 2015 Toyota Tacoma we're going to show you part number 87581 from Hidden Hitch. This is the Hidden Hitch class three 2" receiver tube hitch. Now this is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our Tacoma. Starting on the outside here you can see you have a nice rounded reinforcement for your end of the hitch here. Take a look at the side on the receiver part. You have two holes.

One hole's for a 5/8 hitch pin and the secondary hole here is for use with the Draw-Tite J-Pin. The J-Pin is designed to work with a variety of accessories that fit inside your hitch to keep it from rattling around. By itself, as is, the hitch can pull 5,000 pounds, or 500 pounds tongue weight. Now if you add a weight distribution assembly this is a device that takes the tongue weight of a trailer and distributes it over a trailer and truck. In this case the tongue capacity goes up to 550 pounds.

Then our weight capacity for the hitch goes up to 5,500 pounds. Next we'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out with selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. Our measurement for the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 13-3/4". However, this truck is available in a variety of different tire sizes, so that measurement, it will vary. Our next measurement will be from the hitch pinhole to the outside edge of the bumper, and that's going to be 3-1/2". Now we'll go ahead and show you how to hitch is installed. To start off our install we need to go ahead and loosen up the bumper.

We need to go behind the bumper and there's a variety of bolts we have to loosen up. We're on the driver side behind the bumper and we need to loosen up these two bolts and then these two here and this one as well. Now we're going to loosen these up as far as they can go but not take them out, and it will still be safe to hold the structure together. We're going to use a 17mm socket to loosen up these bolts. Our driver side is done.

Let's do the same thing over on the passenger side. Once we have all our bolts loosened up, we'll go ahead and remove these two bolts. Want to verify and make sure this bolt's in place and these two are as well. With these two bolts loose you can see how the bumper gets loose as well. If you can, try to pull this bracket out. Our hitch will fit in between the frame and the frame bracket. We're still on our passenger side. We'll do the same thing over on our driver side. At this point we're almost ready to put the hitch into place. We'll go ahead and show you the hardware that will fit in the bottom of the frame and through the hitch. We have our metric bolt. Also, a conical tooth washer. Make sure the teeth on the washer always face towards the hitch. We'll go ahead and show you the location where this goes into the bottom of the frame, and we'll double check to make sure our threads are clear. This is our driver side. Even on a new truck there's probably some paint or some other debris inside there so you'll probably need to clean them out. We'll use part number 814092, a tube brush and a spray lubricant to go ahead and clean out the threads. Much better. We'll do this on both sides of the vehicle. Then we can go ahead and put our hitch up. Let's go ahead and take your hitch and put it in place. You definitely want a extra set of hands to help hold it up. Run it between the slot between the frame and the frame bracket. Then we'll take one of the bolts and start it on the bottom. Then when you slide the hitch in position you'll notice there's a slot in there. That slot has to line up with this bolt that's preexisting in here so you got to line it straight up from the bottom and then go up. That's the easiest way to do it. We'll go ahead and install our second bolt on the bottom of the frame. We'll snug these bolts down to bring your hitch up for us. Now to tighten up this hardware we're using a 3/4" socket. Now at this point we can go ahead and loosely install our two original bolts here and here. Push the bumper up a little bit and get the bolts started. This is the passenger side. Let's go ahead and do it one more time over on the driver side. Now after our hitch is loosely installed you'll notice there's a space between the bumper bracket here and the bumper itself. You'll see this is the space right here. This is the block they give you to fill it up with. We'll go ahead and take one bolt out a time and install our block and put the bolt back in. We'll do this for this bolt and the one going towards the inside of the bumper. You can see how we have it in place. We've got this bolt started. Let's go back up one more and do it again. This may take some flexibility to get to. You definitely have to bounce the bumper around a little bit to make sure you get the bolt started. That will do it for our driver side. Do the same thing over on the passenger side. At this point we have all our hardware loosely reinstalled, so let's go ahead and tighten them down and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. We'll start with the bolts on the bottom here. Then we'll work on the three bolts that go to the frame. Let's do the same thing over on the driver side. Now we've got these three bolts tightened up. Now the last two going to the bumper you'll have to watch how your bumper sits as you tighten them down to make sure it's sitting the way you want it. One final inspection of the bumper. Make sure it tilts okay. Then we'll go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Definitely have to have a torque bar with a swivel on it in this case. With all our bolts tightened down, that will finish it for our install. That will finish it for part number 87581 from Hidden Hitch, their class three 2" receiver hitch, on our 2015 Toyota Tacoma. .

Installed on a 2009 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab, SR5, V6, 4WD. I received my Hidden Hitch 5 business days after I ordered. Very fast in my book. The directions were very clear and the hitch was very easy to install. I did the install by myself, so it took be about 15-20 minutes longer than the 40ish the directions said. The hardest part was sliding the hitch up between the loosened bumper bracket and the frame. I had to hold it up in one arm and position and tighten the bolts with the other. No drilling required. The hitch itself is amazing looking. I actually had U-Haul install a hitch for me, then I had them un-install it and refund my money. They told me it was going to be hidden but it wasn't at all. The entire lower cross bar was visible under the bumper. With this hitch I have to bend down and only then can I see the very bottom edge of the cross bar. It arrived in pretty good shape. One corner of the hitch had punctured the cardboard box and scraped some of the paint off on one of the edges. I'm not worried about it but some foam in the box might prevent this from happening again. I'm very happy with the quality and with e-trailer. They upgraded my shipping for free and have had excellent email communication from the get go. Good job!! I will definitely use e-trailer again!! 29426

Hitch arrived quickly with the free upgraded delivery. I installed it by myself in under 2 hours. I went by the included instructions and did not remove the bumper and just loosened and removed the required bolts. It made the bumper very loose and got in my way most of the time. If I was to do over i would remove the bumper completly like the video. I would also recommend another person to help, like the video. Overall its a great hitch, very sturdy, looks good, installion was fairly easy. Thanks. 8649

I was able to install this with the help of my 12 year old son with ease. The fit and finish are perfect, and the video made the included written instructions unnecessary. The only thing I forgot to order was the: Mounting Bracket for 4 Way Flat Connectors, ( to complete the overall installation of the wiring harness and make the entire job complete. I would not hesitate to recommend the Hidden Hitch and etrailer to a friend. 15630

Quality product, fast shipping. Installation would be easier with two people, I installed alone using jack stands and a floor jack. Looks good on the truck, barely noticable... this is my third hitch purchase from 52222

by: Kevin02/11/2013

Very well made and solid. Fitting it on a 6 year old truck is more difficult than the video makes it seem (rust, etc). Though it took some hammering, and loosening and tightening of bolts, to get it on, the fit is good. The written instructions are a bit weak, so definitely watch the video a few times. Otherwise, great product, with fairly quick delivery given the size. 65749

I had to take it to the garage where I have my truck serviced to put it on . I 'm getting beyond the stage of crawling under trucks anymore. It was a snap to install and the wireing harness was really simple and easy to hook up. The mechanic that did the work was really impressed with the quality of the product. He was more impressed with the price of everything. 37559

The hitch is a perfect fit! The instructions were clear enough for this computer programmer to do without a helper. One good hint, however, is to use a floor jack to support the hitch on its way up into position. This lets you maneuver the brackets into place without needing to support the weight. Great product and excellent service from etrailer! Thanks! 20627

The products speak for themselves. This is the third purchase I have made through etrailer and they are by far the best company I have dealt with. They always have what I am looking for and the turn around is fast. This last purchase showed up in less than 36 hours after I placed the order and I did not put a rush on it. Outstanding service and support! 58602

This is a very good quality hitch. It fits my Tacoma and does what it's supposed to do. Very sturdy. Also it is hardly noticeable on the truck, but easily accessed. I will probably rarely tow a trailer, but I plan on using my hitch mounted bike rack quite a bit. This was my second hitch from and they have been great to deal with. 46098

Shipped same day and received in 3 days. Receiver took me about 45 minutes to install. I was very impressed with the quality, fit and finish. Everything lined up perfectly and I would give the good folks @ the highest rating as they kept me up to speed from the moment my order was received, to shipping, to delivery. Great company! 26491

I bought Hidden Hitch for a clean looking installation and I am not disappointed. I only wanted the receiver to show, Not the cross bar or advertising. I did the installation by myself... Would have been easier with help but not necessary. If a hairdresser can do it, anyone can!.. Only half true, I use to be an aircraft mechanic. 27460

Hidden Hitch arrived in excellent condition. It took longer than 1/2 hour to install, but my buddy and I decided not to take the bumper off my 2005 Toyota Tacoma, but to just rather loosen those bolts holding the bumper to the frame. Harder to install the Hidden Hitch this way, but easier for us in the long run. 36461

The hitch is well made and fit perfectly on the truck. Did everything myself and took less than an hour. I do have access to a vehicle lift which made it easier than working under the truck from the floor or a creeper. Ordered the wiring harness along with it and that installed easily also. 40870

Hitch for 2007 Tacoma D-cab Strong and well made, installation took several hours but well worth the time. This was due to re-aligning the bumber after loosening the bolts as required. Well designed and barely seen from behind truck. 1642

Mounting flanges were bent and would not fit until the brackets were bent into a position that it could be lined up and bolted in place. Find a different brand. It worked, but took over two hours to install due to this poor QC. 199472

Ask the Experts about this Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Will Curt Bumper Mount Trailer Hitch # E-3S Fit a 2007 Toyota Tacoma Bumper
  • The Curt Bumper Hitch, part # E-3S, is made to attach to a truck step bumper. It is a universal fit design so it is not listed for a specific vehicle. The mounting holes are 8-1/2 inches center to center between the holes. If your 2007 Toyota Tacoma has a step bumper and has mounting holes with the 8-1/2 inch dimension then it will bolt to your bumper. If you do not have holes that will line up with the hitch then you can still use the hitch but you would have to drill new holes. I am...

  • What Trailer Hitches Fit a 2012 Toyota Tacoma
  • CURT has not yet did a test fit on the 2012 Toyota Tacoma for trailer hitch # 31313 so I cannot say whether or not it will fit. But we do have 2 hitches that are confirmed for the 2012 Tacoma. We have the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75236, and the Hidden Hitch, # 87581. Both hitches exclude the X-Runner model. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend adding the etrailer Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For trailer...

For in bed 4 bike transport you could use four of the Yakima BlockHead Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Racks, item # Y01117. The smaller holes on top are 6 inches apart on center and the larger holes are 8-3/4 inches apart on center. I recommend a frame mount hitch # 87581 for your 2014 Toyota Tacoma.
