Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Toyota Matrix

Today we are going to be installing Hidden Hitch part number 60898 on a 2009 Toyota Matrix. This installation will also apply for Draw-Tite part number 24812. Okay we are underneath the vehicle and we are looking at the driver-side frame rail here. As you can see at the bottom we have got three existing weld nuts. Those are going to provide our three attaching points for the trailer hitch. That is going to be the same over on the passenger side. It may be necessary to clean the weld nuts out prior to putting the hitch up into position on some models that have seen a winter or two where there might have been some road grime or corrosion built up.

On this particular vehicle our weld nuts are in good shape so I am not going to clean them out before starting the hitch installation. You are going to be attaching each one of the weld nuts using the 12 mm bolt along with the conical tooth washer. Over here on the passenger side you can see we have got the exhaust coming out. We do not need to lower the exhaust but we do need to put the arm of the hitch up and over the exhaust tube here when we go to put the hitch into position. Okay now that we have got the hitch up into position, we can go ahead and torque it down. You will want to check with your directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And now that we have got all of our bolts torqued down our installation is complete. This will complete the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 60898 on a 2009 Toyota Matrix.

2009 Pontiac Vibe

Here are the pictures of the hitch just installed this morning on our 2009 Pontiac Vibe. The hitch was very easy to install and we're very satisfied with the quality. Even at 80 years of age, I was able to do the majority of the wiring myself, but did have my step-son do the last wire that had to go underneath and up to the battery. He also bolted on the hitch. He is a mechanic by trade and was impressed with the ease with which the hitch fit and bolted up. All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase and will recommend your company to others. 19255

2003 Toyota Matrix

I recently decided to buy a trailer hitch for my 2003 Toyota Matrix XR. After searching everywhere, and a million phone calls, I finally found exactly what I was looking for on etrailer.com. I found the customer service to be some of the best I have ever dealt with. I was even contacted personally by Cathy T to help answer some questions I had about my purchase. I received my order in about a week. The installation required very little mechanical knowledge. had to tap the rusty bolt holes in the frame of my car, but after that it was very simple to install. Along with the plug and play wiring harness I ordered, the total installation time took well under an hour, and I was literally towing my trailer home an hour later. Id highly recommend etrailer for the quality of product for the price, and the excellent customer service. 122918

Very easy installation on my 2003 Vibe GT. Actual installation was less than 30 min, I spend more time collecting my tools and getting the car up onto the ramps than I did installing the hitch. My southern vehicle did not have any corrosion issues with the bolt holes, 30 sec on each with a wire brush in my drill cleaned them out just fine. The receiver sticks out a bit farther under the bumper than I would have liked, but it does not cause any problems for me. 277534

Again, never question the internet, I have a 2005 Matrix RS, so the age of the car should of told me to buy a tap to tap the frame rails, I didn't buy one and had to wait a week to install because you cant get that M12 x 1.25 tap locally. Other than that it all went very well. The 24812 does make you trim the fascia a bit and the other places too. But I prefer that because the hitch is off the ground more. From the install instructions (Note: Toyota Matrix XRS & XR Sport models have added center fascia that must be removed for hitch installation) Heather at etrailer is the best, I ordered 3 of these by mistake and she cleared it up and got me a discount to boot. Thanks Heather. I will be coming back to etrailer for my X3 hitch, little bit bigger job. I included a picture and that scratch on my bumper was already there. Thanks to my Daughter!!! 280700

This is the second e-trailer hitch that I have purchase and installed. Hitch came with all required parts and was installed in about two hours. Expanded time on install was caused by the piece that had to be removed prior to install. Hitch itself took about 1/2 hour to install. Complete instruction were included as to how to install. Love these products. With minor modification put the center back on. 190894

2005 Pontiac Vibe

Great price for a good product This was purchased for a 2005 pontiac vibe. Unfortunately, it has had 5 solid years of rust build up on the threads where the 6 bolts go into. I highly recommend using some sort of tap kit to freshen up the threads. I tried wd-40, rust dissolver, and pure muscle to try and get these bolts into place. Each of the six bolts took me about 30 minutes a piece because I was basically cutting new threads with shear force. A cylindrical wire brush may have also been helpful. Once I got the holes rethreaded, installation was a snap. Makes for a good work out, and I'm feeling it days later! I can't comment on the other features of the hitch because I haven't used it yet. 2742

2010 Toyota Matrix

I've had the Draw-Tite hitch for a few months now and have nothing but good comments to say regarding the product. I have a 2010 Toyota Matrix and will primarily use the hitch for a bike rack, and have already made a 1000+ mile trip from Milwaukee to Niagara Falls with 2 bikes mounted without issue. The only issue I had with installation had nothing to do with the product itself, but the amount of rust that had developed from not using the pilot holes where the hitch's bolts were to be mounted. What should have been a 20-30 minute installation ended up taking 2+ hours because I had to tap the holes to make the threads usable again. After tapping the holes, installation was a breeze and the hitch is solid as can be. I'd definitely recommend this product! 142452

I am really happy with this hitch. It does not stick out. My car was a little rusty, so I had my mechanic install it. 224495

Still great, I only use my hitch for the bike rack, and Im thinking of gettinga storm trooper hitch cover. That is all

My whole experience was great with one exception. My car has 5 years of New England winters on it already and the factory welded-in nuts had a surprising amount of corrosion and dirt that made it very hard to crank in the bolts. I needed a 2 foot pipe extension on the socket wrench in order to have enough leverage to get those bolts home. If your car has some years on it, seriously consider asking for help from a friend with pneumatic tools. The website, products, and online videos are all excellent. The etrailer shipping department went out of their way to get me a fast delivery. Superior customer service. I will recommend them to friends. 62980

2010 Pontiac Vibe

I purchased a hitch and wire harness for my 2010 Pontiac Vibe from your company and couldn't be more delighted with the product and easy installation. I'm 64 years old and had no problems at all.( I did view the installation video ) I believe I spend more time running the power from the battery than the hitch or harness. Everything works great and because of the harness plugs ( not crimp on connectors ) I expect no future problems. In this world, It's not to often the advertising matches the product. Your company is the exception!!! Keep up the good work. Great products and honest representation. Thank you!!!! 32731

2006 Pontiac Vibe

etrailer is my new hero! Waited until the last minute to get our car set up to pull a trailer on our trip. The materials arrived the day I was told it would! The directions and insights on the website guided me through the process. Two major problems: first my 2006 vibe's mounting holes were very rusted. A hint from eTrailer's website about making a tapping screw worked like a miracle. The second problem happened when my wiring directions got lost during my rushing around. The video help found on the website saved the day. The video helps were very easy to use! We are now off on a great trip thanks to eTrailer! 95608

The product arrived as expected and in good condition. The kit takes 15 minutes to put on once you have the weld nuts cleaned out. WD-40 and a wire brush were not sufficient to clean out the weld nuts. I bought a M12 x 1.25 tap. I ran this through each nut once and it allowed for easy threading of the bolts. It would be nice if the tap was included with the hardware or offered as an option to buy. Unless the car is brand new, the tap is what is needed to make this a quick and stress free install. Despite having metric and English tap sets I had to special order this not so common tap to do the job. 283805

Great product and price. It took awile to install as the car was nine years old and the welded in nuts were a little corroded and filled with road dirt. Once cleaned out the hitch installed in just a few minutes. I could not be happier with the finished product unless the receiver could have been a 2" model to fit my bike rack. A 1 1/4 to 2" receiver was purchased after market. 248746

Great folks and fast shipping prevail! I almost got caught up in trying to piece the parts together from other sources to save a few bucks, but after reading so many stories of other people who tried that route and encountered problems like missing pieces, wrong size bolts, and little to no customer service, I decided go to the safe route and use etrailer. I'm glad I did, because the costumer service is outstanding, just like their do it yourself videos. Their prices were actually very reasonable, especially considering it gets done right the first time. 189744

2003 Toyota Matrix

2003 Matrix XR The hitch was delivered quickly and it installed easily as described. I had to tap the weld nuts on the frame prior to installation. The edges of the hitch push slightly on the molded plastic fascia of the bumper but no trimming of the bumper was required. Looking forward to getting a hitch-mounted bike rack! 39644

fit perfectly. also had ball hitch and trailer light hook-up for my vehicle. Shipped quickly, no damage. I did have a local shop install this, but would not have been necessary if it had been a new vehicle. The slight re-positioning of the older exhaust broke a part of the exhaust. The local shop that did the installation thought these were better and a better deal than what THEY had initially considered. This hitch and receiver has hauled my 12' Jon boat dozens of times for great fishing fun. THANKS for a good, quality product. 241551

I put penetrating oil on the car's threads right after I ordered the hitch. I recommend wearing safety goggles when installing to prevent grit from underneath your car from falling into your eyes. Installation was simple. I used the muffler to hold up the right side while I threaded bolts on the left side. After the left side was loosely bolted in place I pushed the hitch up on the right side and hand treaded the right bolts. After that it was a matter of drawing up the 6 bolts. It was installed in less than 30 minutes. 129218

I appreciated the videos and other users' input. I definitely needed a tap to clean out the rust in the nuts that were welded into the body at the factory. Once they were cleaned out, installation was a breeze. The fit and finish on the hitch are very good. The holes in the hitch lined up perfectly with the factory holes for a hitch. I pulled a small closed rental trailer with no difficulties. The lighting harness worked right away. The hitch was delivered in less time than I had anticipated. Overall, an excellent experience. 133846

The package arrived yesterday and I was very pleased with the shipping time. The instructions are very easy to understand and the illustrations are very helpful. I have watched your videos on line and feel that installation should take less than 20 minutes. The hitch is very sturdy and should have no trouble handling our trailer. Thank you for a great product. I will recommend you to my and friends and for any future items I need. 34861

2006 Toyota Matrix

I purchased this for a 2006 Toyota Matrix. I thought I could do the install myself, but I need a tap and eventually asked my mechanic to do the install. The first trip was a few weeks ago, and all went well. The car originally had a cosmetic molded plastic fascia that was ripped off in a parking lot, so I can't tell if any trimming would have been required...seems like it would have been necessary. Very easy transaction. 279830

If your car isn't brand new I highly suggest getting an M12 1.25" tap, without it I would never have been able to put the bolts in. They were far too rusted and filled with gunk. Otherwise the product itself works as it should and is a pretty good deal. For etrailer.com I would just include an M12 1.25 tap as most people have brought this same issue up. Up the price a couple bucks and you can break even on it. 258879

by: Tim S.09/12/2011

Hitch was easy to install. Holes in frame were quit rusty and had a hard time getting them in. Maybe etrailer could include a tap with their kits? If you take one of the bolts and cut a groove on one side about 1/2 inch up from the end, it will act as a tap to clean the threads out. (Thanks Ryan for this idea!) Wiring was easy too. This is my second hitch from etrailer and will be back, should I need another. 23846

I was amazed how quickly the hitch was shipped out and how quickly it got to me. The instructions were clear and it went on quite easily with the exception of the nuts on the vehicle being rusty. It took a bit to get the bolts screwing into them. It would be a good idea to use a tap on them first. The wiring harness connected easily too. The whole job was done in a very short amount of time. 8768

The product is very sturdy and installs neatly around the muffler. I didn't have rusted holes so the six bolts went in easily with just cleaning beforehand. I didn't make sure the spacing was even before I tightened but would recommend others do. Overall, amazingly easy compared to spending a half day with a welder, as I have had to do for a hitch with a different car. 280272

The product was great, fit perfectly, and bolted up just fine. The only problem I ran into was very rusted mounting holes on my car. It is 8 years old and located in northern Minnesota before I installed the hitch so they saw many salty winters. Instal took about an hour and a half, but if the holes were clear it would have been less than 15 mintues. 83932

It was just as advertised, and phone support was good. The on-line tracking was accurate. I did have a false confirmation on the first hitch I ordered, then I missed the backorder notice until close to my due date, so that was a scare, leading to tension on moving day because one threaded hole on my frame needed re-tapping. 159995

Great hitch! It is "hidden" in that it doesn't stick out to injure your legs as you walk past forgetting that its there.....unless of course the ball/tongue is installed. It worked well to carry the trailer loaded with my ATV this week. It's install (easy) on my Pontiac Vibe is solid and strong. 219492

Install was pretty easy. I was able to get all the bolts on but I needed to drive up to the car shop to have them tighten them (cost $15). Although, it's in the right bolts, it appears slightly off center in relation to the bumper but I don't think this will cause any structural problems. 190395

I ordered my trailer hitch on Sunday and it was delivered on Thursday. After cleaning the rust out of the mounting holes on the frame rails I installed the hitch. Installation took only fifteen minutes. My first time dealing with etrailer.com. It will not be my last. Very satisfied. 292576

The hitch was everything as expected. The videos were a great tool for knowing what I was getting into. The New York State salt had done a number on my hitch mounting points however so I had to retap the mounts with a M12X1.25 tap before I could get started with the installation. 88079

Communications from etrailer were excellent. Items packed to insure safe arrival. Installation was as described. As was told, the most time consuming part of the project was cleaning out the threads of the weld nuts on a two year old vehicle. I would highly recommend etrailer. 17898

  • The Curt Class-II hitch # C12221 has a higher weight rating and would work with your 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS. Draw-Tite # 24812 is a Class-I hitch where as the Curt # 12221 is a Class-II. The Class-II hitch will have a higher rating than Class-I. But keep in mind the maximum towing weight capacity of your 2009 Toyota Matrix is 1,500 pounds per the Toyota Matrix owners manual. Per Curt instructions, the fascia might have to be trimmed on models with lower fascia but I pulled the Curt hitch...

  • All of the hitches available to fit your vehicle are Class I hitches. The most common hitch, 24812, was one which fits with or without the rear fascia. The bolts for that hitch are M12 x 1.25 x 40mm. We offer replacement hardware kits part number RHK. I have included a link to the most popular hitch for you 2006 Matrix and to our hardware kits.

  • Availability of 2 Inch Receiver Hitch for 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS
  • There are no 2 inch hitches available for a 2009 Toyota Matrix, however we do have a solution for you. We have 1-1/4 inch hitches for your Matrix and a nice adapter for making your 2 inch bike rack work with 1-1/4 inch receivers. First you will need a hitch. The Draw-Tite, part # 24812, has a high customer rating and would work just fine for a bike rack and includes a pin and clip. We even have a video of one of these hitches being installed on a 2009 Matrix, I have added a link to it. Since...

  • Trailer is not Level When Towing with Recommended Drawbar
  • The instructions (see link below) state that the drawbar must be used in the rise position only, for your Pontiac Vibe. Drawbar 3593 has a rise of 2-1/8 inches, and only the drawbar recommended for a Class I hitch should be used. The manufacturer tests for crash safety on Class I and Class II hitches and their recommendation should be followed. If your drawbar is in the correct position and the trailer is still not level you may need to haul that particular trailer with another vehicle....

  • What Trailer Hitches Will Fit 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS Without Any Trimming Of The Rear Fascia
  • On the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24812, it will fit on your 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS with the lower rear fascia. The rear fascia has a center section that will have to be removed when you install the hitch. It is not hard to remove that section because it is made to be removed for a trailer hitch installation. Also needed for towing would be the Draw-Tite Ball Mount, # 3593, and either the Tow Ready 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball, # 19256, or the Tow Ready 2 Inch Hitch Ball, # 19258. The...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Matrix and Converting 2 inch T2 Bike Rack to 1-1/4 inch
  • The thing about hitch adapters/extenders like the part # MT70355 that you referenced is that they reduce the capacity of the hitch they are used on by 50 percent. The hitch you referenced part # 24812 has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs so it would only have a 100 lb capacity with that extension. The T2 part # TH9044 that you referenced weighs 60 lbs so you would only have 40 lbs of capacity for bikes with the setup you referenced. Your best solution would be to convert your Thule...

  • Size and Thread Pitch of Attachment Bolt for Draw-Tite Class I # 24812 for 2004 Pontiac Vibe
  • The Draw-Tite Class I # 24812 hitch attaches to nuts welded into the frame of the vehicle using M12 X 40mm bolts which have a 1.25 thread pitch. If the weld nuts in your frame are corroded or clogged up with road grime, before resorting to chasing them with a tap, you can try cleaning them using some spray lubricant like WD-40 and a wire brush like the one on a battery terminal cleaner # DW00254.

  • My Draw Bar Will Not Fit All the Way Inside My Draw-Tite Hitch 24812 on my Pontiac Vibe
  • The stop inside the hitch is not to force customers to purchase certain brand products, but to ensure that a Class II draw bar is not inserted into a Class I hitch. The Draw-Tite hitch you have, part # 24812, is a Class I hitch so if the welded stop inside is preventing the draw bar from going all the way in, you have a Class II drawbar. The recommended draw bar for this particular hitch is part # 3593. This draw bar will fit your hitch and will be at the proper height for trailers...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2005 Toyota Matrix XR
  • Currently, there are 2 trailer hitches that will fit your 2005 Toyota Matrix XR. One Class-I # 24812 (Draw-Tite) and one Class-II # C12013 (Curt). With that said, they are all good products but I would most certainly go with the Class-II Curt hitch # C12013 because it will provide a higher tongue weight capacity of 250 pounds and Class-II will work with Class-1 and Class-2 accessories. As a result, giving you more options to choose from. With the Curt trailer hitch, if you plan on adding...

  • Is Heat Shield Modifcation Required to Install Curt Trailer Hitch # 12221 on a 2008 Pontiac Vibe
  • The Curt hitch # 12221 is only a fit for the 2008 Pontiac Vibe GT models. Heat shield modification is only required for installation if the heat shield interferes with the hitch installation area. If you do not have a GT model, then heat shield modification would not be required. I would recommend the Draw-Tite model # 24812, as this hitch does not require heat shield modification, and it includes a pin and clip, which would be required if you plan to tow a trailer. • What Draw Bar Fits Draw-Tite Class I Hitch Part # 24812
  • The Draw-Tite Class I hitch you were looking at, part # 24812 uses a 1-1/4 inch receiver. A class I hitch usually has a stop welded into the receiver tube or a detent punched into it to prevent a class II accessory from being used. If the draw bars you have were intended to be used in a class I hitch, they will work. Keep in mind, Draw-Tite recommends only using the part # 3593 draw bar. If the draw bars that you have measure any longer than 1-1/2 inches from the center of the pin hole...

For a cargo carrier, I'd recommend the Pro Series 20x48 Cargo Carrier, part # 6500. For the best capacity, I'd recommend the Curt Class II hitch, part # C12013 which has a 250lb tongue weight capacity and a 2500lb towing capacity. A hitch design bike rack will insert into a hitch on your vehicle so it will require a hitch to be installed on your vehicle. If you're only planning on towing, and are fine with being limited to carrying two bikes on a bike rack, the Draw-Tite Class I, part # 24812 would be my recommendation.
