Today in our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon, we will be installing the current hitch, part number C12270. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we will go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you to choose some accessories for your hitch; such as ball mount, a bicycle rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin whole to outer most edge of the bumper, is approximately 5-3/4". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground, is approximately 14-3/4". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now we're going to need to go ahead and lower this carbon canister down here on the passenger side.
To do this there are three nuts that will need to be removed to get the main body of the carbon canister out of the way; two at the rear of the vehicle and one in the center, on the front of the canister. With this lowered out of the way, we will need to remove two more bolts that hold the bracket to the frame of the vehicle. Now with the carbon canister lowered down out of the way, we will need to go ahead and lower the rear most exhaust hanger, so we can slide the exhaust over to give us a little extra room. To do this we use some spray lubricant, and in this case we went ahead and used a large pry bar. Or a large flat head screwdriver will work as well. Now with the rubber exhaust hanger removed, we'll go ahead and point out the locations that we will be mounting our hitch. We will be using both of the tow hooks, one on each side.
As well as we will need to remove to two rubber plugs where our carriage bolt and spacer block will be reversed fishwired up into them. Now for the two forward locations, one on each side, we use carriage bolt, a spacer block, and a flange nut. For the two rear locations, you will have a hex bolt, a spacer block that goes on either side of the tow hook, followed by a flange nut, as shown here. Now we will go ahead and reverse fishwire our hardware into position. To do this, youll slide the spacer block onto the fishwire, and then thread the carriage bolt onto that. You will push the carriage bolt up into the hole, followed by the spacer block, and then pull back down.
We will go ahead and repeat this process for both sides. Now we're ready to go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us raise the hitch up into place. On the driver's side, you need to make sure that the hitch goes to the outside of the tow hook, while for the passenger side, you'll make sure the hitch goes on the inside of the tow hook. With the hitch raised up into place, we go ahead and place the hex flange nut on the two forward locations. Now that the hitch has been supported, we can go ahead and put the rear hardware for each location. The two small spacer blocks on either side of the tow hook, and the hex flange nut. Now for the driver's side, again take the hex bolt, go from the inside of the vehicle towards the outside, and on this side we will go through the hitch first, then the spacer block, then the tow hook, then another spacer block, and then the hex flange nut.
Now that we have all the hardware in place, we can go ahead and tighten it down, and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Once that's done, we can go ahead and put our carbon canister back up into place by putting the two bolts that hold the bracket up first, followed by the three nuts that hold actual canister in place. And finally we can go ahead put our exhaust hanger that we removed earlier back up as well. And with that, that will conclude the installation of the current hitch, part number C12270 on our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon. .

This is the second Curt hitch I have purchased from etrailer for my family's Subaru's and it is great quality. Price is unbeatable, and shipping and customer service is top notch. I installed it on my 2002 LL Bean Outback H6. There were a few small snags that I will detail here, but overall installation was quick and easy by myself. As was detailed in another review, you have to remove the charcoal canister mount bracket after you unbolt the canister itself. I slipped the two exhaust hangers off easily and both carriage bolts and plates slid in easily with the included fish wire, a brilliant idea by the way. The snags I ran in to were on the right side, the distance between the tie down point and the receiver was much greater that the thickness of the two included spacers, so I just sandwiched in about 5 or 6 1/2" stainless washers, in addition to the spacers, and I also used stainless fender washers that were ground down to fit the contour of the tie down, behind the nuts because the tie down holes were large enough for the nut to drop in to. Do yourself a favor and buy around 8 1/2" washers before you begin and your install will go a lot smoother. It may be that the H6 model is different, but I think the slop in tolerances probably has more to do with the year range that this hitch covers. I can't wait to start towing with my new car! 149172

Installed on my 01 Outback in order to use a rear bike rack. Received expedited shipping at no cost. Etrailer had the best price for this which includes everything you need for installation (fishwire) and a drawbar/pin for towing. Tips for installation: 1. Jack the car and place on jack stands. Put on eye protection. 2. Remove carbon canister AND bracket in the right rear corner (looking from the back of the car). You need to remove 3 nuts and 2 bolts using 13 mm and 12 mm sockets. The actual canister and bracket can be left to hang. 3. Fishwire the bolt and spacer into the LARGE hole closest to the tow hooks. 4. Install hitch with BOTH vertical surfaces which bolt on to the tow hooks to the LEFT of them. 5. Thread the nuts to the carriage bolt first, lightly and then thread the nuts to he tow hooks/holes maximally first (don't forget to use a spacer on either side of tow hook). You need a 3/4 socket and use correct torque wrench setting. 6. Torque the carriage bolt nuts down next. 7. Reinstall bracket and canister and unjack. You are done. 58173
I was pretty confident in my ability to install my new hitch even before I started shopping. Once I found etrailer.com and checked out the install videos my confidence was certainly increased. The hitch and wiring harness were packed well, very securely, and delivered on time. In fact, after placing my order I was emailed to say that it was able to be expedited so it would arrive on Friday rather than Monday. Score 1 for etrailer.com. Set out Saturday morning to install and literally EVERYTHING went exactly as the video and instructions said they would and I managed to get it done in just under 45 minutes with very basic hand tools. I would definitely do business with etrailer.com again and have already made many recommendations. Thanks!! 23021

Great product - easy to install (helps to have two people and an impact wrench) - only took us half an hour or so. In retrospect, we did not see why there was a need to lower the exhaust to do this install - we did it, but it seemed to serve no purpose. The drawbar - I probably won't ever use the one supplied - the 3/4" rise is not nearly enough for most attachments - I put a 3" riser on it and it matches up much better with my log splitter, trailer, etc. Also, given that the mounting (on an Outback) is so far in, you may find that safety chains on your attachments need to be extended to reach the holes on the receiver. 56135

My hitch and accessories arrived much faster than was originally quoted! Amazing service! The hitch fit was ok ( I have a 99 Outback Limited ), as I had to use some spacers to make it line up correctly. It lined up in the frame/ carriage bolt area just fine, but the area where it hangs down it was a little off and I had to use some elbow grease to make the bolts go through. Haven't hauled anything with it yet, but it looks great and I installed it by myself in a little over an hour. Overall great looking hitch ( looks stock ) and great customer service from etrailer!!! 55409

my package arrived very quickly and in good condition. and i must say i was surprised at the quality evident in its construction and the paint job on it. looks baked on and not simply a spray paint job. the metal is very well welded and of ample thickness. i do not forsee any problems with it. and on my Subaru Outback I had been looking for a trailer hitch for quite a while and was always told that there were none made for it. I lucked on your site on the net during a search. glad i did. thank you for a beautiful product for a limited size market like the outback. 16979

As with other etrailer purchases, great value and the video explaining your item and how to install it makes it easy to decide to buy here! Great customer service too! 184972

Curt's fault, but the hitch was about 3/8" too narrow. Had to break out a sledgehammer and put spacers in different places to mount the hitch. Once I got it on there though, I am completely satisfied with it. It is getting the job done, but I would have concerns about putting the rated load on there. Bought a Curt hitch for my Subaru Outback. It fit well without any drilling, Just had to trim the rear bumper a bit. No big deal really. The 1-1/4" to 2" adapter I bought is also a Curt. There seems to be a little slop but that in no way reflects the great customer service I received in separate orders with etrailer. Quick shipping on both orders and price matching on my latest. Great service was what brought me back when I recently replaced my vehicle and needed a new hitch setup. 6842

Hitch is of good quality and instructions are pretty easy to follow. The problem was the hitch was delivered bent, it is really beefy so I have no idea if it was sent that way or UPS managed to bend or drop it during shipment. It took me, a friend, a lift, and lots of prying and cussing to get it to line up enough to get the bolts to line up. I would have given up if I was trying to install this without the help of the lift. 21052

This Curt Trailer Hitch is the best we have had; easy to install even though we had it done by our terrific mechanic - took him less than 30 minutes. He was happy with the instructions and how smoothly everything we bought from etrailer.com fit together so beautifully; and it looks GOOD! Thanks so much for everything. We will recommend etrailer.com and Curt hitches and accessories to all our friends and anyone who asks. 83961
Great product! Super-easy to install with just a little reading in the comments. I used ramps instead of jack stands (with carefully blocked front wheels) but about 45 minutes later I had a trailer hitch (on my '02 Outback H4) and two hours after that I was towing my first trailer. It needed a TINY bit of tightening after the first 100 miles with the trailer but the ensuing several hundred have left it firmly attached. 78510

Very well made and heavy duty. It literally took less than 30 minutes to install (with hand tools). Very happy, would highly recommend. Customer Service and communication was also outstanding. Received updated emails regarding status of order. Quaity and service was nothing less than excellent. No fuss, no muss - from ordering, receiving and installation. We will submit pictures of it in use soon. 43276

I installed this hitch on a 13 year old outback wagon. I'm not a great direction follower and it was a pretty straight forward process, but taking a few minutes and reading the simple directions was very helpful! You just need a couple of 3/4 wrenches or sockets plus a torque wrench and it is a job anyone could do. I'm pleased with the quality of the hitch and will buy from etrailer again! 49266
I got the Curt hitch installed on my 1996 Subaru Legacy L, and everything looks good. Here's the photo you requested (Attached). Thanks! 149504
As far as Erailer's service goes it was wonderful! Super fast delivery and upgraded shipping:) not to mention the lowest price on the interwebs. The hitch is nice. Good welds and paint. The fit was a little off and needed spacer on the passenger side. Not Etrailers fault though:) all in all, very happy! 117729
The hitch was great, and the install was relatively straight forward. The product could have been packaged better. There was quite a bit of extra room in the box, and the hitch arrived bent. Luckily we had a LARGE bumper jack to straighten it out. 5/5 for the product. 2/5 for the packaging. 69819

I have not installed a hitch before, but I am quite handy. It involved using sing to lift the hitch in place, cutting slits in the plastic bumper, a bit of tugging/lifting, and ~ 2 hours to complete the install. The hitch itself appears to well-secured and strong. 154884
Did not think it would be as easy as was. Your info said it would take 30 minutes for a professional and 60 for anyone else. I was done in 20 minutes. The hardest part was getting the rusty bolts off of a bracket that had to be removed. Highly recommend ! 140736
