Today on our 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt customer-fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver. This offers a two-inch opening. It's part number is C13079. Here's what the hitch looks like installed. It's going to give us a nice heavy duty symmetrical look across the back, tucks up before the edges right up into the frame rails. It's really easy to install.
Just a few bolts. Three on one side, three on the other, which you'll see in a minute. This is going to offer a 5/8 inch pinhole. It's going to take all the 5/8 inch pin accessories anti-rattle bolts. You have the reinforcement here on the end.
The Caler hitch immobilizers will go around those easily.This is a class 3 hitch so you've got tons of options as far as accessories. You'll do any of the bike racks, cargo carriers, ball mounts. There's just about everything out there will fit a 2 inch by 2 inch hitch. As far as towing goes, it's rated for a 350 pound ton weight, 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating. Of course, look into the owner's manuals to see what it's rated for as far as towing and then you'll want to go off of whatever those numbers are the lowest.
Safety chain connections on the flanges here on each side connect, you know, your safety straps, safety cables. One thing that I like, the hitch pin hole's right here, it's pretty close to the edge of the bumper so that it's not so far underneath the car that you eliminate a lot of bike racks. I'd be surprised if any of the 2 inch bike racks we have won't go on the vehicle. A few measurements will be important when you're selecting your ball mount, your bike rack and maybe hitch cargo carrier. To be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, we've got about 14 inches. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about one and a half. All right, now before we start the installation we need to clean out a couple of weld nuts that are already in our frame.
You can see where the tailpipe rolls up here there's a large hole in the frame rail. We're going to clean out the first weld nut right behind that. Now if you're cleaning this out a little spray lubricant and a nylon brush usually the ticket. This is part #814092 if you don't have a little tube brush like that to clean these out. We're just trying to get out any dirt or debris that might be built up in there. Clean this one out here in the passenger side, check the threads with your small bolt that's going to come with your hardware just to make sure it's going to thread in without giving you any trouble. Better to find that out before we're holding the hitch up there rather than after. All right. It looks like that one's going to start without any kind of issues So now let's go over to the driver's side and we'll clean out the weld nut in that exact same location. See again, it's going to be the one located just behind that larger hole in the frame rail. Now let's grab our 1/2 inch carriage bolt. These are going to be 4-1/2 inches long and also the spacers. We're going to use one of these and two bolts on each side. The bolt's going to go right into the spacer. We will slide it right through the existing holes in our frame. Two locations there. What we want to do is just tuck those back so they're flush with the hole location so when we get our hitch in we just poke them right in. Now, we'll get our driver's side started. There's going to be a black canister back here. It's like it's probably an evap canister or something. There's enough room to get your hands right over top of that and bring these through, and we'll poke those back just the same. Now we're ready to raise our hitch up into position. We want to guide the driver's side kind of up and in first. That makes it a little bit easier. We're then going to slide through our bolts. We want those to go through the two oblong holes that are on the side of our hitch and that will kind of help hold it in position while we get our other side started as well. Now we'll bring in one of our 1/2 flange nuts and thread it on the end of each of those carriage bolts. We'll loosely install them for now. Then we can grab our M10 bolts. We're going to place those right into the weld nuts that we cleaned out. Now they have a mechanical washer that will be on there. We want the teeth of the washer facing up towards our hitch, and we just loosely start those as well. All right, now let's take a quick look to be sure we have our hitch centered on our vehicle. It looks good. Now we're going to go through and snug down our fasteners. All right, now we'll grab our torque wrench and torque them down to the specifications that we'll find in our instructions. All right, with all of our fasteners torqued down to specification, our installs taken care of, we're ready to hook up to our trailer or bike rack and hit the road. That's going to complete today's installation of the Curt customer-fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part #C13079 on our 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander. .

I have a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and this Curt Class 3 was a perfect fit. It looks nice on the car and it is well made. I was able to install this hitch in about 1 hour by my self without any ones help, no floor jack, no jack stands, no drive over pit, no hydraulic lift, nothing but a concrete drive way, a few hand tools, and a torque wrench. The install is pretty straight forward. 3 bolts on each side, (all the bolts come with the hitch). I didn't have to remove anything off the car to put it on. Mitsubishi already drilled and tapped the frame so it's just a matter of lifting the hitch up and putting in the bolts. I lifted up the passenger side of the hitch first (this is the easy side with the most room to work) and started 1 small over head bolt thru the hitch and into the tapped frame hole, finger tight, and it held up that side of the hitch to the car, then I lifted up the drivers side and started the 2nd. small bolt into the frame. I left it loose too, until I started the other 4 bolts, 2 on each side running horizontal. Then I went back and tightened all six bolts....done. I am not a mechanic and this was not hard to do. 168582

The 13079 fit my wife's 2012 Outlander Sport perfectly and was quite simple to install. However, I do have a few tips from my experience. 1) Make sure the vehicle is completely cooled. The install on the passenger side is directly over the exhaust pipe tip. When on your back, the muffler is right up against your face. 2) The opening on the drivers side is EXTREMELY small. I do not have very large manly hands, and I still had a hard time getting them in there. The directions call for a 6" extension on the socket. I recommend a 3", the 6" would not fit. 3)If you are installing on a not new car... like my 2012 (installed in 2015) then throw that 30 minute install time out the window. It took me over an hour to loosen the 3 bolts holding on the tow hook. They were rusted on quite well. Cheater bars were needed for leverage. I also gashed my arm pretty good on the corner of the muffler... Watch out, that thing is sharp! Otherwise, actually putting the hitch on was a breeze. A second set of hands to hold it is place is nice, but not necessary. 190735

I have stuck with Curt for many of my car's hitches. The quality is the best and fit is always excellent. The install on this particular vehicle was simple. The only complaint I have from Curt and/or etrailer is these hitches really should be wrapped with stretch wrapping. I have had a total of 6 hitches sent to me over the years and everyone of them comes in chipped and scratched. The mounting plates are the first to rip through the box and sometimes actually get bent. It would be nice to get a hitch one of these days in perfect condition. 124041
I had my daughter's boyfriend install for me. He said it took about 20 min and was a breeze. The only thing that occurred is that one of the sides was bent but he took a hammer and straightened it. Installation was a breeze. It looks nice; it is flush against the SUV; it doesn't extend so that you will hit your knee on it when you go to the back. The fit and instructions were perfect. With putting it up on ramps, locating the right tools in the tool box, and then relocating them as I used them--It was about an hour until I took it back off the ramps with the receiver installed. I was able to install it by myself with a little contorting and using my legs to hold the other side of the receiver up to slide the first bolt in... and I'm old and fat. 134641

Instructions where very good and clear. I was able to bolt up the hitch quickly (less than 30 min) and very easily. I would suggest a second set of hands just to guide it into place a little easier. The use of the round bar makes it look "stock" and it blends in very nicely. Used on 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. P.S. I am not using for towing, just a cargo carrier and maybe a bike rack. 41176
