Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2010 Mazda CX-9 - Curt

Today on our 2010 Mazda CX9, were going to be installing the Curt Hitch, part number 13575. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-3/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12-3/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Now, lets go ahead with the installation. First, well go ahead and point out our attachment points. Theres a total of eight attachment points, four on each side. Each one of these attachment points is a well nut, pre-manufactured in the frame. Before we try to install our new hardware, were going to go ahead and clean out each one of these attachment points.

First, well spray each attachment point down with some spray lubricant and then were going to use a 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092, to thoroughly clean the threads out of each one of the well nuts. This will ensure that our hardware will go all the way in nice and easily. Now with each one of our attachment points cleaned out, well go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us install the hitch. We will use the new bolt and conical toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. Well go ahead and thread each one of the fasteners in hand tight until we have them all in place.

Each process we do here on the drivers side is going to get repeated identically on the passengers side. Now, were ready to go ahead and tighten them down. With all our attachment points tightened down, well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now, with all our fasteners torqued to specifications, that will complete the install of our Curt Hitch, part number 13575, on our 2010 Mazda CX9.

Not much you can say, fits great, I would not hesitate to purchase again. I read about many folks complaining about how hard it was to get the receiver around the heat shields. I was able to easily do it without raising car, you just have to study it for a second. You stick the backend up first and then rotate it in place by bringing the working end up to position. A bit more direction in the box would have been helpful but not required. Like which side of the odd washers that they use face the bolt head. I remember etrailer mentioning something in the video I watched before buying but I didn't want to waste my time to clean up and go back to the house and find the install video. On my 2013 CX-9 the back of the hitch makes it so the spare tire won't go in place without holding the tire at an angle as you crank it past the hitch...hold the side of the tire closest to the rear of the car higher. The attached pictures also show the bike rack I bought here as well, attached to the new receiver on the back of 2013 CX-9. Seems I can't get in to see previous orders to get the bike rack info or write a review on it. 216724

This was not an overly difficult installation. Get the back of the car up off of the ground (safely), I used ramps for extra clearance. Next, remove the spare altogether, it just makes life significantly easier. Once that is done, it is a matter of wrestling the hitch up in between the frame rails. Clearance is tight, and you will temporarily distort the heat-shields around the mufflers. Once you do get it in place, thread in a single bolt by hand on each side and it will no longer need to be held in place. I do recommend a helper for this portion, but it can done solo. I am 5'5" - 160 and stubborn as can be, so I refused to use a helper. Make sure the conical/toothed washers are tooth-side against the hitch when tightening. Also getting proper torque values on one side is impossible due to an electronic module in place. If you wind up using a wrench, be prepared to exert significant force on final torque. Lastly, the spare will not want to clear when you reinstall. I was able to muscle it up into place, but it was a fight. It fits, but if you ever need to get the spare down on the side of the road, be prepared to either deflate it first (get a portable air compressor) or to fight it. My final thought: Really, this is more of a car issue; the rear view camera will not show the trailer ball when you back up ( my old KIA did). So be prepared for a little extra time there on connection. Overall, an easy if not physical installation. 204052

Was able to install in less than 30 minutes, with a good ratchet and socket set. The initial 'getting hitch into position' was a little of a geometry problem. We had to turn it upside down and come into slot around the spare tire just right, kinda tricky, but doable. Great product, would highly recommend thus company. 86506

Its still solid and performing well. The wiring harness has started malfunctioning though, and will need replacing.

This is for customer service and shipping only. I will review the installation after I get it done after Christmas. The hitch was shipped in a very strong box with internal bracing to protect the contents. The harness and hardware kits were taped to the hitch and arrived in very good condition. Overall service from first question to actual order and delivery were excellent. I will use this company for these thing in the future. thanks for the great service. 109678

Installation was a cinch and we encountered zero problems with the hitch or the wiring setup. Yep, I made the right choice buying it from these folks. happy holidays..

Well designed, well made, and a perfect fit for my 2008 CX-9. I removed the spare tire to give myself as much clearance as possible, and I would recommend that if you cannot get your car up on a hydraulic lift. (I also suggest you get a second person to help, unless you are as stubborn and determined as me!) I am 5'7", weight 130lbs, but I completely installed this myself with the car on the ground. As others have noted, the heat shield on each muffler needs to be bent out of the way, but after installation they very easily bend back into shape. Nice trailer hitch, nice price, easy installation. Slam dunk. 141455

Great product, fast delivery. Was installed in 30 minutes, which included jacking up the car and removing the spare tire to access the installation points. 125708

Quality substantial product. Installation was simple. Two keys. One remove the spare tired to get more room to work. Two stand it so the bracket points up. Then you can push it up from behind the exhaust and spin it into place 95439

After a year it has been working fine. I only use it with a 4-bicycle carrier and thee have been no issues.

The hitch arrived in only two days. The etrailer folks are terrific. I ordered two hitches, one for my Jeep (reviewed separately) and one for this Mazda application. The Jeep installation was by far the easiest. Even with my son helping out, we had difficulty getting the hitch past the heat shields on each side and into position. In fact, we could not get it in with the car wheels on the ground. We finally backed it up on ramps (raising it 12-15") which gave us enough clearance to slide the hitch in. With more patience (which we didn't have) we may have been able to do it from the ground, but I'm not so sure you won't need some kind of way to raise the back end. The Mazda had factory welded nuts in place, so it was easy after that. Eventually, a good result. 53226

My only complaint is the instructions. First it was hard to get put in place because of the tight fit, which I know was necessary, but maybe some suggestions on the angle or such. Then it said to finger tighten the really don't want to do this until you have all the bolts just barely threaded in...finger tightened, had to untighten, it was a frustrating 1 1/2 hours as there is not much play in how the bolts go in (which again I understand, just don't finger tighten until they are all in). Haven't used it yet, but I'm sure it will be fine. 202087

Product came fast and service from etrailer was great. Unfortunately install was not so easy. No sure if it was the hitch or the vehicle frame, but it took me nearly an hour and a good rubber mallet with a wedge to get the hitch to fit into place. I was thinking it would slide right into place, but it was so tight I had to bang on it and wedge it up there. Lowering the spare tire did help a bit, but only to give me a bit more room to work. Eventually I got it up and installed....2 hours later. 146289

The receiver arrived in a large cardboard box. Right off the bat I see the brackets poked two holes through the box. I opened and there were some scratches and cosmetic damage to the arms from shipping. I proceeded to check the welding and it looks decent but the manufacture could have done a better job. The paint looks to be powder coated and looks pretty durable. I have not installed it yet so I can't comment on that but overall I would give this product a 4/5. 157621

I'll admit that I was skeptical about installing a hitch by myself. This is the first vehicle I've owned where it was a possibility. It would have been easier if my car was lifted for the installation but I managed just fine. It took about 20 minutes to install. Most of that was tightening the bolts. One bolt in particular gave me grief but that was due to a tighter space on the passenger side. Overall it was pretty easy and I am by no means mechanical in nature. 98886

by: John C.04/29/2014

Great hitch and installation was fairly easy. I did it by myself without lifting the car. Not that I would recommend that method for everyone. A lift would have made it easier. My only problem encountered was that my bolt holes in the frame were rusted pretty badly. The car is a 2009 so it was not the fault of the product. It took a fair amount of spray lubricant and muscle to get them in. Otherwise the installation is flawless in a 2009 Mazda CX9. 127967

The Curt Hitch fit without problems. No need to remove the spare tire or cut the heat shields as some have suggested. All bolts went in without problem is you left the bolts loose until all bolts were started. A little difficult to torque the bolts due to lack of sufficient space... but a articulated adaptor solved that issue. Total install time: 40 minutes. Ill try to get some pictures taken if I get time this week. 47658

by: Ed C.07/24/2015

Super fast shipping and an easy install over all. I didn't even lift the car at all. Instructions and video were helpful for certain One thing I encountered was that the clearance between the bolt and spare tire lifting mechanism (on a Mazda CX-9) was not sufficient for my torque wrench to fit. Simple enough, I dropped the donut spare and removed the lift mechanism and finished the install; added maybe 10 minutes 214248

Just wanted to let you know the hitch arrived on time. Opened the package, checked the contents and then began the installtion. Use a jack to raise the vehicle for more room. What a snap for an 84 year old tinkerer. My daughter held one side up while I installed the bolts. Used wrenches to tighten so no space problems for a wratchet. Could not ask for an easier installation.Great Product! 91312

I rarely respond to these customer surveys, but I have been overly impressed with the customer service and quick deliver of etrailer. Great product. 30 minutes install..solo. definitely would help if you took the spare off. I didn't but if anyone wanted to. Smaller bolts gave me problem initially but once got them started, it was smooth. A good cleaning of the holes highly recommended. Haven't tried out the hitch yet. Installed mainly for a bike rack. Thanks etrailer. 204098

2011 Mazda CX-9. Perfect fit, leading to a really easy installation. Although I must admit I see it as two person job, simply to keep the alignment straight as you're threading the bolts. And it is not (at all) necessary to take down the spare tire. This trailer hitch is well made, and came well packaged. All in all, a great value here. 205880

Mazda CX9 Trailer Hitch Install Installed very easily. A little tight going in but that's not a bad thing. The only real issue I ran into were the two rear passenger side bolts. The hoist mechanism for the spare tire is in the way and prevented the use of a ratchet or torque wrench without a universal joint. Thankfully I have one. 4371

Hitch looks great. I installed by myself so it was a little challenging. The heat shields by the mufflers made it a little tricky. Also, having a low profile socket wrench is a must for the passenger side on a 2011 CX-9. Other than that, it's great. 209146

Very nice trailer hitch. But when I installed I have to keep spare tire with low pressur.

comment by: Abady - 01/25/2014

You should not have to lower the pressure in the tire. You may need to push the spare tire towards the front of the vehicle while raising it into position so that it can clear the cross member of the hitch.

  • Best Hitch and Folding Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2014 Mazda CX-9
  • Yes to all of your questions! The Curt Hitch part # 13575 that you referenced would be an excellent choice for a hitch for your 2014 Mazda CX-9 and would allow you to retain your factory spare tire. The spare will need to be angled a bit as it get raised and lowered but that shouldn't be too much of a hassle. With this hitch you will be required to use a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 to support the carrier and not void the hitch warranty. For a similar hitch that wouldn't require...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 Mazda CX-9
  • Hitch mounted bike racks are the way to go. They provide a more secure attachment to a vehicle that doesn't contact any painted surfaces. For a hitch I would recommend the Curt Hitch part # 13575 that has a 2 inch opening. 2 inch hitches will have higher capacities and will offer more flexibility for future hitch accessories. This hitch does not require any welding for installation, and you could remove it pretty easily as well. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Mazda CX-9 to Carry a North Shore NSR-6 Rack
  • The Curt Hitch part # 13575 that you referenced would have the capacity to do what you are looking to do. The only thing left for you to check would be the owners manual for your 2014 Mazda CX-9 to determine what the tongue weight rating of your vehicle is and be sure not to exceed this figure as well. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well.

  • Recommendations For Carrying 3 Bikes And A Trike On 2010 Mazda CX-9
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for your CX-9 is the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13575. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch on a 2010 CX-9 you can check out. Carrying 3 standard and one 3-wheel trike is going to be difficult. Although costly, I recommend a hitch-mounted carrier like the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 Trike Carrier, part # HR1450R-TRKADP2. This will carry the trike and one additional...

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier 18110 Clear the Bumper on a 2008 Mazda CX-9
  • When we have installed Curt trailer hitch # 13575 on other Mazda CX-9s we found that from the center of the hitch pin hole back to clear the rear bumper measures 4-3/4 inches. On Curt cargo carrier # C18110 it measures 6-3/4 inches from the center of the pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier so there should be no interference issues. Even with the rise in the shank it should not be a problem. You will want to measure the clearance on your CX-9 just to be safe. I have linked a help...

  • Troubleshooting Hitch Bolts that Don't Want to Line Up Properly
  • Sometimes in shipping the install brackets of a hitch can get slightly bent. As long as there are no flex marks on the hitch or chipped paint from the hitch flexing you can bend the hitch back to get it to line up. Otherwise it can be helpful to start with all of the install bolts loose so that you can first get them all started. Once they are all started you can then torque them down to spec.
