Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport - Curt

Today we're going to be doing a review and install on the CURT trailer hitch receiver class three hitch with two inch receiver tube, part number 13456, on our 2010 Range Rover Sport. This is what the hitch looks like once it's installed on our Range Rover. A few features of this is it has this two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. It's got this nice reinforcement collar around it. It's got a steel plate with holes for your safety chains. It's got this nice tubular design, and you can see this cross frame but as you can see it's also tucked up nice to the fascia on the underside. On this hitch there's no drilling or welding required.

It just simply bolts in. It has this nice black powder coat finish over a protective base layer. It features a six hundred pound max tongue weight rating, and a six thousand pound gross trailer weight rating which is upped to eight hundred pounds with a weight distribution system and eight thousand pound trailer weight with weight distribution system. You want to make sure to check your vehicle's owner manual to see what your vehicle's rated for. That 600 pound max tongue weight rating is great for things like hitch-mounted bike racks and cargo carriers. If your vehicle comes equipped with a smaller temporary spare it will still fit up into place with the hitch. Now I'm going to show you how to install it.

Before we go underneath to begin the install on our hitch, we will want to lower the spare tire. In order to do that you want to get into your back hatch, lift this up to access your spare tire tools, move the scissor jack. There's a little cover under here, it's got a tab, you just want to pop that up pull it out of the way. Then, grab the lug wrench and put it down over the head of the bolt, and start loosening it. Then, once you get it down far enough you can take it off and set it off to the side so it's out of your way. Now underneath the vehicle we're going to start by loosening up the bolt that holds the vibration dampening weights in place, just inside the rear fascia on the frame rail.

This is the weight, so I'm going to take a thirteen millimeter socket. You can see it's moving a little bit, but I'm going to loosen that up a little bit. Now you can see I've got plenty of play there. I'm doing that in order that I can move it so I can get better .. Little more room and better access to that access whole right there, so that I can fish wire my bolts into place.

You'll want to do that on both sides. Now we're going to fish wire our carriage bolts and spacers into the holes that we'll be using. For the first one you're going to be using a little bit smaller spacer. With the carriage bolt go ahead and put it through, then take this fish wire and thread it on until it bottoms out and stops. Then, what we'll do is that's that access hole that we made a little bit more room for. We'll take this fish wire and we'll send it up through there. Then there's this larger hole on the inside of the frame over here which is where we need to fish that wire to so you can get it through. When you feed it through you want to feed that spacer first, and then the bolt. Just gently pull it through and into place. Then you can let that one hand there and we'll grab the other one. That one we'll feed in through the same hole and it'll come out this larger opening closer to the rear. Now on this one it may be a good idea to take the end of your fish wire and bend it down a little bit in order to give yourself a little bit better angle because you got to go in and then straight back down this way. We'll feed this one in. We'll feed it towards the rear. There we go, and again, we want to feed this washer through. This one's the bigger washer, but the bigger spacers will be going towards the rear on the rear hole since the holes are a little bit bigger. All right. Now that we've got those pulled into place we're going to leave these fish wires on here to help guide our hitch into place. Now, don't forget to do the same to the other side. Now, you want to grab an extra set of hands to lift the hitch up into place. We're going to take that one that's coming through the side and we're going to feed it through this slotted hole up close to that corner. The the one towards the rear we'll feed through the horizontal slotted hole. It may take you a little bit of pressure to get it up in there, but you can get it up there. Once you take that fish wire off you can go ahead and start threading on your nut by hand. You can use either a ratchet or some sort of impact driver to get them tight. Then once you've got them tight, we'll want to make sure to torque them down to what's specified in the instruction manual. You'll want to be sure to torque all four bolts. There we go. We'll want to go back to tighten up these vibration dampening weights on the rear. Don't forget that there's one on both sides. Once you're done tightening that one up, we'll go ahead and do the other one. Once we're done with that we don't want to forget to put our spare tire back into place. We'll finish tightening up our spare. Double check make sure that's tight. Yep. Nice and firm. We can put our tools away, and close it all up. That's going to complete out look at the CURT trailer hitch receiver class three, with a two inch receiver tube. Part number 13456, on our 2010 Range Rover Sport.

While the product itself looks to well made, the installation process is far from easy. The fishwire process is hit or miss and it is very likely that the average guy will have a lot of difficulty in attempting to install this product on a Range Rover Sport. The access hole is way too small and there is no way to install the product without a successful fishwire experience, (short of removing the bumper cover). I consider myself fairly handy with tools and I am generally successful with other installation procedures. I would not recommend this product to the average person and frankly would prefer to return the product to Etrailer.com 25536

Okay so when i first received the kit and unpacked it and looked at the parts, i thought there is no way this will be 30min (as stated in the instructions). However, all i can say is trust the instructions and the fishing wires, they ARE THE HEAT! Those little fishing wires are life savers. it took me 20 min. Graet kit! Saved over $400 as compared to the Land Rover OEM Hitch. 12619

I purchased an aftermarket plug and play, trailer wiring harness, not hard at all.

William, thanks for the feedback! Dave, there are some different aftermarket options available. Just let me know the particular year and model of your Land Rover and I can help you find what's compatible.

The Curt Hitch, item #13456, works great. I was not sure about the fish wire part of the install but after speaking with Matt at etrailer it was easy. From the time the hitch was delivered it took less than 1 hour to install on my Land Rover LR4. Having a extra set of helping hands also made the job easier. 104257

  • What Hitch Receiver for a 2012 Range Rover Sport
  • We can offer some bike transport options for your Rover Sport. If you have the HSE model we offer Curt Class III hitch # 13456 which has a 2-inch receiver opening and a beefy 600-lb tongue weight capacity, plenty for even the largest of bike racks. I have linked the hitch install instructions as well as two helpful articles on hitch installation. Please note that if you have a full-size spare it will not be able to fit back in place after hitch installation.

  • Will the Spare Tire Still fit on a 2008 Land Rover Range Rover Sport with a Curt Hitch Installed
  • As long as your spare is not a full size spare that is the same size as the wheels and tires on your 2008 Land Rover Range Rover Sport then it will still mount in the factory location. If it is a full size spare then it will not fit and the only recommendation I can make for you would be to try and track down a smaller spare.

  • Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  • Your 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Sport should be equipped with a 2-inch Class III type trailer hitch receiver, like the Curt # 13456 that we offer. In this case you can use any compatible 2-inch Class III hitch cargo carrier. One such hitch carrier is the Rola # 59502 that you referenced. We also offer anti-rattle devices to help reduce play in the hitch. If your hitch has a tongue weight rating like that of the Curt, 600-lbs, then you can effectively use all of the capacity of a 500-lb-rated...

On many vehicles the spare tire that is not full size will be a little donut type. Since that type of spare would simply not work on an off-road vehicle like yours the 175/80/R19 (30-inches in diameter) is not considered to be a full-size spare due to its narrower width so it will fit with the hitch # 13456....
