Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2001 Honda CR-V

Today on 2001 Honda CRV we are going to be installing curt hitch part number 13314. Before we get started with our hitch installation were go ahead and show you a couple of the final install dimensions which are going to help make choose your hitch accessories a little bit easier from the top of the receiver to the opening to the ground is going to measure 17 inches and from the center of the pinhole to clear the spare tire from the rear is going to be approximately 6 1/2 inches and now we go ahead and move on to our installation. In the first thing were going to need to do is over here on passenger side of the vehicle go ahead and lower down the exhaust system. So we have some more working room. There are three exhaust hangers that were going to remove the exhaust off. There are two here at the rear, one on the inboard side and one in the upward side.

And if you found muffler forward there is one just forward of the axle. And what is out there well just have lock the exhaust rest on the rear hitch shift. Were actually caught up over here on the driver side now and go ahead and point out the many holes were going to be using to attach our trailer hitch. The middle hole were actually going to be using as an access point to get hardware inside the frame. You notice with the kit that there are two different length bolts so for the rear most attaching point will be using the 7/16 block along with the inches 3/4 carriage bolt.

However for the forward side hole well be pitching in the same block size but the carriage bolt itself is going to be an inch quarter in length and it's going to be the same about the drivers and passenger sides of vehicle. So at this point well go ahead to start pitching our hardware inside the frame and what were going to take the thread in here and go ahead and insert it and through the attaching hole and back our access hole go ahead take our block and slide it on and go ahead and put that inside the frame and then again follow up with the appropriately length carriage bolt. For what is inside the frame go ahead and take other end the bolt go ahead and pull it down into place. So go ahead and do the same thing for the forward attaching point so inaudible we want to use the inch and a quarter carriage bolt. Okay, we want to go ahead and repeat that set up for the passenger side of the vehicle.

And let me go ahead and check on the place. I do note before we put it up that there is a center much attached bolt hitch as well that's on the tow hook here end of the vehicle were going to be using to provide U bolt that comes with the kit and we do now go ahead and put the U bolt on first before you put the hitch up. I want to put the hitch up I actually just go on ahead and attach to the forward most bolt on the frame first on both the drivers and the passenger side and then from there we can actually rotated up and then allows to finally attach to the U bolt in the middle but to the frame bolt as well. And were going to attach the hitch to the carriage bolt in the 7/16 slide snaps. Whenever the hands tighten down I'm going to go back through and torque each one of the bolts down now.

Were going to verify with the directions this specific torque rating reach at the bolt. Were tighten the U bolt down were going to make sure we tighten it evenly so we may not have a threat protruding through both sides. Then with all the bolts store down we just want to make sure we put our resource back up on the tanker and our installations will be complete and that would conclude the installation of curt hitch part number 13314 on 2001 Honda CRV.

Quality craftsmanship and only took an hour to install. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver looks great, but better yet, functions as it should. The whole process from finding the right product, online installation details, checkout, fast shipping, and installation was one of the best online buying experience's I've ever had. I will be using etrailer.com as my go to site for any future towing and cargo needs. 28720

99 Honda CRV Hitch I purchased the Curt Class 3 hitch # 13314 with the # 118336 wiring harness and the # 2753 ball mount for my 1999 Honda CRV. Had the hitch installed with the wiring in about 1 1/2 hours. I watched the 2004 CRV video so I had a good idea how the fishwire worked, and the 99 CRV wiring video. All went well. Thanks. 2573

Can a CR-V really tow as much as a Class III hitch allows? No -- but I wanted the beefiest hardware I could find for my receiver hitch. The Curt design is certainly that -- this is a hefty bugger, one that managed to damage its own shipping box during transit and one that'll take a second person to help lift in place, despite videos/ instructions saying otherwise. Most of the install went well -- I used the opportunity to also clean and undercoat some areas to protect against rust -- but the headache came when trying to line up hardware. I could either get the "middle" U-bolt into its flange OR the four main bolts to line up. Either-or; not both. eTrailer claimed the hitch may have been bent slightly in shipping and needed some weight placed on it to pop it back; I, a 300-lb guy, followed those instructions but saw no result. I really suspect Curt's tolerances on this build were off by about 3/4-1". I ended up getting the side hardware on and then looping a J-hook through the CR-V's tow hook and into the middle flange and calling it a day. Works well -- I towed a 900-lb log splitter a few weeks ago with no qualms. Glad I now have this sort of versatility on my DD. For what it's worth, if you've not replaced the exhaust on your CR-V, be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS when popping the muffler/axle-back off of the exhaust hangers. Just a little extra stress on an already rusted flange may be enough to break it clean off the pipe, leading you to some expensive exhaust repairs. Ask me how I know.66589

This hitch came in quick it was exaactly as described. It also installed quickly too. My only complaint was that I broke the bolt fish tape while pulling the 3rd bolt though so i had to improvise with a little fish line duct taped to the original fish tape. The video was key n the install!59980

Just installed item #13314 on my 2000 Honda CRV. I did not have any of the problems that others were reporting regarding the holes not being large enough. I did however have difficulty with the piano wire that assists you with inserting the bolts into the tube. The piano wire continued to get hung up in the tube adding a little frustration to the install. The entire install took approx 45 min including cleanup. I have not had the opportunity to use the product so I can not honestly review that aspect of the product.42457

The hitch is installed and works great. I was very happy with the service that I received. I appreciated the email communication that I received with respect to my order. Ordering online sometimes makes me uneasy because I don't know who I am dealing with. Receiving emails with a person's name and phone number (in case I had questions), made me feel confident that I wouldn"t have any problems. I would certainly recommend etrailer to a friend. 37509

This is a very nice hitch, well made and it fits well. The only problem I had was the center hole in the frame had to be drilled out. So I had to make a trip to buy a #3 unibit ( because these bits work the best with thin metal), drill the hole out to about 1", spray some primer and paint on the holes then I mounted the hitch. The install video was very helpful, and so was etrailer. I plan to use the hitch for bicycles and possibly a light trailer. I went with the class 3 hitch to ensure that even with 4 bicycles on a rack the hitch would be strong enough. Thank you etrailer you have great prices and service.33671

I've just completed installing the hitch and wiring harness I ordered from etrailer.com so I can't honestly comment on the product. It seems well built and I'm looking forward to using it. I wanted to take a moment to say some nice things about etrailer.com. After I placed my order there were some problems with the credit card I used. etrailer called me several times to get things ironed out and their representative was unfailingly polite and helpful. Once I received my order I watched the installation videos on etrailer's website. I can not tell you how helpful this was. This is the first time I've worked on my car and things have gone exactly as I expected! All of the parts came with my order, the video's directions were clear and correct, and installation took about as long as I expected with no surprises. I couldn't ask for anything more. Thank you etrailer.com33122

I watched the video of the hitch installation before doing my install. I had thought removing the exhaust hangers might be difficult ... it wasn't. I installed without assistance BUT I had a jack to hold hitch in place while getting bolts lined up. If you don't have this tool, it will be a two person job. Customer service from eTrailer was excellent! ( BTW I am a repeat customer ) 30010

I had no problem whatsoever with this internet purchase. Price was right, fast, free shipping, and I got it installed the next day. Installation of the trailer hitch took me about an hour from start to finish. Installation is a minor challenge because of the muffler being in the way and having to fish the bolts through the frame holes, but it just takes a little patience. No complaints at all. 19526

The experience all around was all positive. I received email notifications very rapidly about the availability of the products ordered, and when they shipped. The package arrived 2 days after I placed the order. The hitch itself was great! All was exactly what I had ordered. As far as service and products are concerned, I couldn't ask for better! The videos I found on e-trailer's website (and on YouTube, posted by e-trailer) were very helpful, and made a big difference. However, the instructions could have had a little more details. For instance, there are two length of bolts provided for the assembly, but the instructions don't mention where each length should be used; not too difficult to figure out, but still... Something else that I learned while installing the hitch was that the exhaust hanger should be position above the hitch before the hitch is fixed under the frame. Otherwise, the exaust hanger cannot go back in its position; I had to de-assemble again to get it in the correct position. Overall, I'm very pleased with the whole experience. The hitch is installed correctly, and is a perfect fit for the car. A few months ago, I wouldn't have dreamed of installing a hitch myself, but e-trailer made it very easy for me to learn.18040

Brilliant!!!! 188K miles ago I bought a Valley Hitch that has cracked the floorpan twice now. This Curt hitch PROPERLY attaches to the CR-V using the subframe rails. It is HD for this vehicle. I pulled my Brenderup 1205S home this weekend over two TN mountains with about 1,000 lbs of firewood inside the trailer with no problems at all. I can step on the hitch and no flexing, no creaking, no problems. You get what you pay for! The Curt was ~$150. The Valley was ~$100 ten years ago and caused alot of damage to the car that I'll have to MIG weld to keep out the weather and rust (which the car has none of yet). In the end the Valley Hitch has been much more expensive than the Curt and MUCH more trouble. I REALLY thought the Curt piano wire bolt tool was CLEVER. I had all four bolts in place in ~10 mins. I think with my hitch install took under 30 mins laying on the driveway in the dark with a drop-light and proper handtools. We are so pleased with this hitch and our 'V. It's a '99 and still going strong with even the original 5-spd clutch, shocks/struts, and axles. With this Brenderup trailer and a proper hitch we finally don't look like the Clampetts everywhere we go. We used to have a rusty open utility trailer which we piled our bikes and camping gear onto and then strapped it down.2563

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Can an Inside Out Scooter or Power Chair Lift be Used with a Class III Hitch on a 2001 Honda CR-V
  • I would say that the Harmar al065 micro inside out lift, could be used on your 2001 Honda CR-V, as long as you take all of the weight ratings for your vehicle, the hitch and the lift into consideration. If you spoke with the Honda dealer and they told you not to use the lift on your vehicle, even with a Class III hitch, then I would go with their recommendation and try using or getting a vehicle capable of using a lift to fit your needs.
