Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2010 Ford Escape - Hidden Hitch

Alright today, in this 2010 Ford Escape, were going to install part number 87626 from Hidden Hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when its installed on a vehicle. Next, well give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be around 17 inches. From the center of the hitch pen hole to the edge of the bumper will be around one inch. Now, well go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

Okay, the first thing were going to do is go ahead and go over to the passenger side and lower the exhaust out of the way. Now, this is optional. On some vehicles, the exhaust will be in the way of one of the fasteners to tighten it down. In some vehicles, it will not. In this case, it makes things easier to see and do, but were going to go ahead and lower it out of our way.

Well go ahead and spray down the hanger with some lubricant and then go ahead and pry it off. Well start by the bumper and then well remove one more, going towards the front. Then, well lower the exhaust out of our way. At this point, we can go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up to the vehicle. This will mount up to the one hole on the bottom of the frame and then, there will be two holes in the side of the frame on the inboard side.

Now, well go ahead and show you how the hardware interacts with the hitch. Well have a bolt and a block. Those will be assembled inside the frame and ran out through the hitch. Then, on the outside of the hitch, well have a inaudible 00:01:19 washer and nut. You also want to make sure your teeth in the watcher always facing towards the hitch.

All right, now well go ahead and install our hardware. Well run our bolt leader that comes with the kit through the hole were going to use at the bottom of the frame, going towards the front and then another access hole at the bottom of the frame, going towards the bumper. Then well take one of our blocks, thread it through the bolt leader and then push it into the frame. Next, well go ahead and take the bolt and thread it into the bolt leader and then pull it through the frame as well. Now, this will be easier to do this headfirst, to install inside the frame. Were done with the passenger side. Well go ahead and do the same thing on the drivers side. Now, with an extra set of hands, we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. Well hold the hitch up. Well make sure we dont push the bolts through the frame and install a inaudible 00:02:08 washer and nut. These two bolts will help hold up the hitch while I install the rest of the fasteners. All right, now well go ahead and install the rest of the fasteners inside the frame. Once again, well use a bolt leader. Well run it through the hitch in through the hole in the frame and then out through the access hole to bond the frame. Well thread in the block and then the bolt and reinstall it in the frame and then pull it through. Then well add a inaudible 00:02:30 washer and nut and we will go ahead and install the rest of the remaining fasteners in the same fashion. Once all our fasteners are loosely installed, then we can go ahead and tighten down the bolts and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. Now, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Well apply a little bit more lubricant and then slide it back onto the hangers. That will finish it for our install part number 87-626 from Hidden Hitch on our 2010 Ford Escape.

Got the hitch on, today, without any help. Being almost 70, I don't have the stamina to hold anything of this weight up from under the vehicle. I used rope (yellow in the pics) to raise the hitch, winch like, from the rear, side mount holes on both sides. Used the jack to balance the receiver end. Once it was close, I got the front carriage bolt set, and worked the hitch up to it. After that, the other side went the same way. Got the side holes aligned, once the front bolts were snug, using the jack. Took a few hours, working very carefully. Had to get the muffler out of the way. Really easy with the way (ala the old VWs) they make the rubber hangers.80240

I was easy to install. I followed the video on line and had no trouble. I thought the hardest part was going to feed the bolts through the frame but the tool made it easy. You will need a second person to hold it up while you get the screws setup.79388

After watching the installation video for the Ford Escape, I was confident this would be a fairly easy install. My only concern was how to hold the hitch receiver in place with my vehicle on ramps. My wife volunteered to help so I wanted to make it as easy as possible for her. I ended up removing the spare tire and using the cable that holds the spare in place. I fastened a ratchet strap around the hitch, fastened it to the cable; then my wife cranked the cable moving the hitch into position. It was easy for her to hold it there while I inserted the bolts and attached the washers and nuts. A well designed hitch! 79074

The Class III Hidden Hitch was very easy to install as I was able to install the hitch by myself. I inserted a bolt from the outside through the rear most hole of the hitch and the vehicle frame on the right and left side and that held the hitch in place for me to snake the bolts with washer in the proper place. After 2 bolts were snaked through on both sides I removed the initial bolt from both sides and snaked the final bolts in place. I haven't figured out the easy way to remove the snake off the bolt as the snake threaded section would tighten on the bolt as it was turned counter clockwise. Removing the snake from the bolt was the most time consuming part of installing the hitch. The bolts provided are long enought to keep you fingure on the threads to put on the washer and nut without fear of pushing the bolt back into the frame. The wiring was also easy to install but I took extra care removing the plastic as I didn't want to damage anything. I viewed the installation instructional video which was very helpful and gave me confidence to do the job right.76160

Fit my 2008 Escpae Hybrid perfectly. Lead wires took a little work to get through the rails, but did what they were made to do. I didn't have to drop the exhaust to tighten the bolts, either. Two of us installed it in about a little more than an hour.74653

This seems to be a very well constructed hitch, that is extremely easy to install. We installed it on a 2012 Ford Escape, it took two of us less than 40 min. to install. We had to pull all of the carriage bolt, but with the fish wire provided it was a snap. 69138

Installed without a hitch. lol. At 62 years old, lying on the ground in winter is not my idea of fun, but having watched the video, it was installed in 30 minutes, numb fingers and all. Ordered it on Sunday night, rec'd it on Thursday. Only problem was with customer service. I never rec'd notification that it was shipped until after I rec'd the hitch. Two days later, I picked up my new trailer and towed it 120 miles with not problem. It worked as expected Thanks63769

This hitch is high quality, well built and looks great. It was easy to install with an extra hand. Although not mentioned in the directions, you will need a deep socket. 63616

This receiver was a perfect fit. I had less than 1/8" gap between the frame rails and the receiver. The only issues I had were with fishing the carriage bolts through the side flange on the driver's side. Luckily they include a spare bolt pull wire. I also was unaware, but apparently some Ford Escapes did not have nuts welded inside the unibody frame rails. I'm glad they give you enough carriage bolts to finish the job. All in all this receiver is exactly as advertised, came with free shipping, and was around half the price of similar ones I had found in brick and mortar stores. Will buy next receiver from etrailer.com.61983

The 6 cylinder Escapes equipped with towing packages can tow quite a bit more than the standard 6 cylinder models. My wife has a 2006 Escape and we have the Draw-Tite hitch on it and have been very happy with it. The CURT part # 13650 has a glossier finish. We load up a large cargo carrier on the hitch when we make our annual trip to Canada in the summer for fishing.
