Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 GMC Terrain - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2013 GMC Terrain, well be installing the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 87572. Here is what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 3 inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 14 inches. Now lets go ahead and install our hitch.

Well need to remove this lower piece of your door here. To do this, well push in on this tabs right here. Now well go ahead and use a half inch nylon toothbrush and a little bit of spray lubricant to clean out our existing weld nuts. The half inch nylon toothbrush, its part number 814092. Now that weve cleaned out the existing weld nuts, its a good idea to take a bolt and make sure that it threads in easily. Here is the hardware that well be using to install our hitch.

Well go ahead and take our fish wire, taking the end thats got the coil on it, well fit it through the round hole here in the center of the bumper, and then pull it out the end. Well then fit our small square hole spacer block on of the end of the fish wire, followed by threading on the half inch carriage bolt. Well then pull the square hole spacer block and the carriage bolt, by gently pulling backwards on the fish wire, pulling the carriage bolt and spacer block into position. Once you have the carriage bolt pulled into position, go ahead and unthread the fish wire from it. Well go ahead and repeat the same process by the other center mounting location. Now for the large square hole spacer block and carriage bolts, well be using the reverse fish wire technique to install these in the vehicles frame.

Well go ahead and take our fish wire, slide the square hole spacer block over the coiled in, and then well thread our half inch carriage bolt on to that. Youll push the carriage bolt into the hole first, followed by putting in the square hole spacer block. Once both are in place, youll gently pull down, pulling the carriage bolt through the hole and the spacer block, and back out. Youll then unthread the fish wire. Well repeat this process over on the other side. Now its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position.

You want to make sure that you dont push any of the carriage bolts back up into the frame or the bumper of the vehicle. Well go ahead and install the 12mm bolt and the conical tooth washer in each of the four existing weld nuts. Next well go ahead and take conical tooth washers and half inch hex nuts, and install them on the remaining four locations. Now that we have all the hardware installed, well go ahead and tighten it all down. Now that all the hardware has been tightened down, well go ahead and torque it to the manufacturers specification. That will do it for the installation of the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 87572, on our 2013 GMC Terrain. .

I installed the hitch on Friday . Took about 1 1/2 hour. No problems. My Equinox is a 2010 so it had the nuts already installed in the frame. It fit perfectly and I'm sure it will serve my purpose. 114353

The hitch had served my need and is working great!!

etrailer, The overview buying experience from etrailer was excellent. The product descriptions and videos were exactly what I ordered and helped a lot with installation. I also liked how etrailer took the initiative to send me an email the day the products were delivered. The only reason I didn't rate this product as excellent was because the wire that feed the hex bolts through the bumper was a little short so I had to extend it by taping a clothes hanger to it. Also, the included paper instructions were a little hard to read, because so many different makes and models were crammed into one page of instructions. It wasn't clear on how to install the two hex bolts, and small blocks, that were furthest from the hitch. Overall I was very pleased with the product and recommend it to everyone. 2015 Chevy Equinox AWD Thank you! C.R. 192927

Short of installing it's self my son-in-law and I installed this hitch for my 13 Chevy Equinox in just under an hour. The only tuff spot was the two bolts below the license plate on the frame. My compliments to Hidden Hitch and Chevy. Thank You etrailer.com for the ease of purchase and fast delivery. The item was well packed. 68341

I have sent an email to Edward to see if he has any follow up information. If he does it will appear below his review.

What we did is use the fish wire and added a piece of wire to it. Then we fished the bolt and washer through the end of the tube and pulled the bolt through the drilled whole and then attached the nut, etc. I used needle nose pliers to grab the wire to pull through. Really wasnt that bad just caused a little head scratching. Hope this helped some.

I was very impressed with e-trailers willingness to exceed expectations. I placed my order late at night and within 7 hours I had received an email indicating my purchase had been shipped and the shipping method had been upgraded for free to cut the delivery time down a couple of days. The install was a little more difficult than what e-trailer had made it out to being. Not that it was any more complicated, but the wires they provide in order to fish the bolts through the bumper are inadequate and in my case would have been impossible to do. I ended up using my own fish tape to pull the bolts through. However once that was done, the install went extremely smooth. I am very happy with my purchase, and I would definitely recommend e-trailer to anyone looking to purchase from them. 125454

Solid quality after a year of much use.

This is an invaluable addition to our 2013 1LT Equinox. The Hidden Hitch receiver is a quality piece and reasonably easy to install. It is almost self explanatory, however the feed line provided is a great concept but did not work as designed without a bit of modification. The Hidden was a bit more but had two additional mounting points for a little more reassuring feeling. Picked up a plug n play harness and mount as well. If your Equinox did not come with the tow package I highly recommend etrailer and the Hidden Hitch. * Mine is the 2" version which makes my ball and mount from my old truck are compatible which saved some money* 101221

Another great hitch from etrailer! This is the second Hidden Hitch brand hitch I have installed on 2 separate GM vehicles, this time for my 2012 Terrain. It installed just as easily as the video, in about a half hour. I chose this hitch over the Curt as it looked like this had a bit more structural support due to additional mounting point. It's very solid and looks very good on the Terrain, with only the receiver portion showing thru the rear bumper fascia. FYI, for those of you ordering this for a Terrain and need a harness, you may want to double-check to see if you have the factory connector, even though you may not have the factory towing package. I have an SLT-2 without towing package, but after checking the video on etrailer for the factory connection, sure enough, the connector was there and all I needed was the simple harness from etrailer meant for those vehicles withe the factory trailer package. 54826

I got my order in 4 days. Great. I came to putting hitch on and found that pull wires for putting bolts and blocks in bumper were to short to reach center of bumper so I added a piece of wire to one pull wire. I tried pulling the block and bolt to the center of the bumper and it would only go about half way to the center and would get caught. I had to make another hook and wire to fish block and bolt back out. Tried from the other side and had the same problem. I then tried pushing blocks up through the rectangle holes and found they would't fit through them either. I ended up taking my disc grinder and ground about 1/16 in. off of each edge of the blocks so the blocks would fit through the holes and got blocks and bolts in this way. After that everything went well. Hitch is on and appears to be a really solid hitch. 188750

The quality of the hitch is very high and it's fit to my vehicle perfect with all installation holes a brackets lining up perfectly. I will stress the need to get an M12 tap and chase (re-tap) the weldnuts in the vehicle body. The vertical holes, because they do not hold dirt and water, required only brushing out. However, without tapping the horizon holes (2 on each side) the bolts were not going in. Temporary use coiled wires worked like a charm for installing blind bolts. Have a partner install nuts on the blind bolts while you steady the hitch. Installing at least bolt in the middle loose helps hold up the hitch. Start all bolts by hand before tightening any bolt/nut. Be sure to use a torque wrench...what your hand thinks is tight is a long way from the required bolt load. 141812

Hitch fit great and I installed as planned. Seems pretty heavy duty and well made and finished. Only a bit of it was poking out of the box after shipping but no damage. I am perhaps less happy with GM who changed the mounting holes / no welded nuts in my 2012 Equinox from what the drawing showed so I had to slide in bolts and plates from end of channel since hole was too small, so I had to add an extension to the fish wire but it worked ok. The hitch mounted up snugly enough against the frame and stayed in place while I got all the bolts to align and thread fortunately since its not light weight. I have not started hooking up the lighting kit yet - paper instructions are a bit confusing but believe the video will help me more. Thanks. 48231

Hitch fit perfectly, just as described. If your vehicle is more than a couple years old I would highly recommend professional installation though. Spent 5 hours with penetrating oil and a steel brush cleaning out the weld nuts on my vehicle. After that was complete the actual install was about 45 minutes. I'm sure the money spent on professional installation would have been well worth it with my situation. Excellent shipping speed and communication from etrailer, would definitely order from them again! 57264

Another option to consider would be to purchase a tap for $10 to speed up the thread cleaning process. Infact, this might be a thoughtful item for Hidden Hitch to offer with the package or for etrailer to recommend and sell on the side.

comment by: Ed B - 01/20/2013

Some times a tap is necessary for severely corroded weld-nuts. If not used properly though, the tap could easily break the weld nut free and the installation gets significantly more complicated.

I received the product as expected and on time. The nice thing about ordering through etrailer is there is never any guessing on your order status. Prompt emails and follow ups always let you know when your product will be shipped and if anything is on back order. I have had to contact etrailer customer service (because of an error I made) and dealing with Amanda was fantastic. There was no deep accented male named "Becky" answering the call. Amanda was very polite, educated in product knowledge and answered every question without making me feel like it was the dumbest thing she's heard. Thank you etrailer, Paul 10785

Hitch didn't fit the first time placing on 2011 Equinox, but after checking mounting brackets, I noticed one side was not at the same angle coming off main square channel. I had to tap with a sledge hammer and then fit perfectly..... also the hardware package did not have any fish wire included even thought it was required for the install... good thing I still had one from previous install! The packaging coming from etrailer (etrailer logo on box exterior) was not sufficient for shipment of this hitch. 51330

Overall I would rate the product excellent. However, the installation instructions were rather hard to follow. The online video did prove to be helpful. In the video they suggested attaching another length of wire in order to successfully be able to position two of the bolts. 1) pull wires of the proper length should be provided. 2) It would have been impossible to make the install with only two pull wires-four are needed. Thanks for the video. 100433

I purchased a trailer hitch and wiring kit for my fiancee's 2012 Chevy Equinox. Deliver came in about three days via UPS. I used the YouTube videos made by etrailer.com on how to install the hitch. Everything worked wonderfully. Install, direction and videos were easy to understand and easy to follow along with. Install took about an hour or so. I am very pleased with results and with etrailer.com. Great customer service. 136701

We bought the receiver hitch for the wifes 2012 Equinox, It came very quickly and me and my son installed it one evening. All the bolts needed were there, the holes lined up, and the bolt installation wires made my son think I was a genius. I don't think my wife has taken her bike and rack off since we installed the hitch. Thank you for a good product. Joe P 49606

The hitch came very quickly and the price was good. I have yet to use the hitch yet so I am unable to really rate the hitch, but the installtion instructions were pretty good other than the hitch came with more parts for the installtion on my vehicle than needed. Other than that all was pretty good and the hitch should work out fine........... 46781

Incredibly easy install! Video was great for someone who has never done this before, clear instructions and a handy help video guide made this the easiest addition I have ever put on a vehicle! Design appears to be of good quality and design. The video instructions were a great value as the written instruction came as an unreadable crumbled mess. The coiled "fish wire" was too short so make and attach an extra length of wire before you start. All went as planned and install time was roughly 40 minutes. 182753

Pulled it out of the box and in less than an hour it was installed. I watched the video first to get an idea of what was in store. Fit just like the video said, the unit was exact fit so I had to use two bottle jacks to hold it instead of one and my arm. I would recommend this to any person. 162841

Fits perfectly. The installation went smooth. The only minor issue is that the fish wires for the center bolts were about 6" short. I had to give the bolt and washer a little shove into the box frame and hope I could then find the end of the wire. 176315

  • I would recommend you use install a Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, part # 87572, on your 2009 Chevy Equinox. You will need to remove the fascia door that is in the center of your rear fascia but for the most part you will be able to see the cross tube of this hitch once installed. Check out some of the pictures on the product page to see how this hitch would look once installed. I also attached installation instructions and an installation video below for you to check out. You may...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2006 Saturn Vue
  • First, be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on towing with your vehicle. There are a few components needed to tow a trailer staring with the trailer hitch. First, there are Class II and Class III hitches available for your 2006 Saturn Vue. I recommend a Class III trailer hitch, # 87572, because it has a higher capacity and the 2 inch receiver is compatible with more accessories. Basically, with a Class III hitch you have more options. Next you will need...

  • Recommended Hitch to Carry 2-Bike Rack with 2013 GMC Terrain
  • I would recommend the Curt Class III receiver, part # 13591 for your 2013 Terrain. Not only would a Class III receiver offer a convenient attachment point for a bike rack or other hitch mounted accessory like a cargo carrier, if a trailer wiring harness like part # 118494 is added, you would also be able to tow a trailer weighing up to the tow capacity of the vehicle (1500 lbs for 4-cyl models or 3500 for 6-cyl models). If you have not yet decided on a bike rack, the Thule Doubletrack,...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 Chevy Equinox
  • The most popular and cost effective 2 inch trailer hitch for your 2015 Chevy Equinox is the Curt hitch # 13591. I have included a link to a video to the right that shows how the hitch installs. Installation is not all that difficult as you can see in the video and in the instructions I have also linked for you. I estimate it would take a novice installer about 2 hours. A professional could probably have it done in about an hour. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested...

  • Hidden Hitch Recommendations for a 2013 Chevy Equinox
  • There are two Hidden Hitch brand hitches available for your 2013 Chevy Equinox, both of them are confirmed to fit your vehicle. The Hidden Hitch # 87572 or the Hidden Hitch # 90145 would work great for your Equinox. If I were you I would go with the # 87572 since it is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch opening that will have a larger carrying capacity and have more options for hitch accessories. I attached an FAQ article on hitch classifications also for you to check out also. The T-One...

  • Availability of Bike Rack For Recumbent Bike on 2011 Chevrolet Equinox
  • Yes, I have the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # S64650-EXT. This is a hitch bike rack that comes with two types of wheel hoops to fit different bike lengths. One set of wheel hoops will accommodate bikes with extra-long wheelbases, like your recumbent bike. The other set of wheel hoops can be used for bikes with the traditional wheelbase. This bike rack will fit both 1-1/4 inch and 2-inch hitch receivers. I am including a link to a video review on the Swagman bike...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2013 GMC Terrain
  • The biggest difference between the Hidden Hitch part # 87572 and the Curt Hitch part # 13591 that you referenced is the round tube vs. square tube. Another difference is that the Hidden Hitch uses a couple more attachment points. Other than that it looks like the Curt costs a little less. Either would work great for you. If it was me, I would probably go with the Curt based on the price difference. To complete your towing setup you may also be interested in the Curt Trailer Wiring Harness...

  • How to Carry a 10 Foot Long Tandem Bike on a 2006 Pontiac Torrent
  • I have a couple of possible solutions for you but the roof racks all have a bar spread of 16 inches like you have found. Here is what you can do: Option 1 would be to install a roof rack, like # TH45050. Then you would need to install a 2 inch trailer hitch like # 87572. You could then add the Thule Goalpost Hitch Mounted Load Bar, # TH997, which will essentially add a third crossbar at the back of the vehicle. The specific mount you were planning to use may not fit this set up, but...

  • Clearance From Exhaust For Cargo Carrier On 2014 Chevrolet Equinox
  • When carrying any cargo on the rear of your vehicle you will want a minimum of 12 inches clearance from the exhaust. It is a good idea to deflect the exhaust on your 2014 Chevrolet Equinox away from the carrier or the cargo in the carrier. I have attached a link to the turndown exhaust tips we offer. You will want to measure the diameter of the exhaust tip on your Equinox and then choose the size and length from the menus on the left of the attached page. The hitch I recommend for your...

  • Trailer Hitch and Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer With a 2006 Saturn Vue
  • I would recommend that you purchase the following parts to tow with your 2006 Saturn Vue. 1. Hidden Hitch Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 87572. 2. Draw-Tite Ball Mount, part # 2923, and Pin and Clip, part # PC3. 3. T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118418. 4. Tow Ready 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # 63845 or 1-7/8 inch hitch ball # 19260 (depending on which ball the coupler on the trailer requires). With these items, you will be all set to tow a trailer. This is a pretty easy...

  • How to Carry a Motorcycle with a 2003 Saturn Vue
  • If you had a Class III hitch with a 2 inch opening on it like the Hidden Hitch part # 87572 yes, the Rage PowerSport Steel Motorcycle Carrier # MX600 would work for you as long as the weight of your bike and this carrier was less than the tongue weight capacity of the hitch and vehicle. This carrier weighs 64 lbs which would leave you with 286 lbs of capacity for your motorcycle. You will need to verify the weight of your bike as it's ready to tow plus the tongue weight listing in...

  • Trailer Hitch, Weight Distribution, Brake Controller, and Wiring for a 2008 Chevy Equinox
  • For your 2008 Chevy Equinox, I recommend the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87572. It is rated at 3,500 pounds of trailer weight and 350 pounds of tongue weight capacity. I have included a link to the instructions for this hitch below. It can be used with weight distribution but you must be careful not to exceed the towing and tongue weight capacities specified by the vehicle manufacturer as adding a WD system does not raise how much your vehicle can tow. So if your camper weighs 2,900 pounds,...

  • Will the Hidden Hitch part # 87572 fit a 2014 Chevy Equinox with Dual Exhaust
  • The Hidden Hitch part # 87572 that you referenced would do a great job on your 2014 Chevy Equinox with dual exhaust. There would be no interference from the exhaust and the install should go smoothly. I attached a video of this hitch being installed on a similar Equinox that has dual exhaust for you to check out. For trailer wiring you would want the Tow Ready Wiring Harness part # 118494. For ball mounts I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts,...

  • Can a Chevy Equinox Carry a 300 Pound Generator on a Trailer Hitch
  • It all depends on a couple of factors. The first thing to do is check the vehicle owners manual for the towing capacities (gross trailer weight and tongue weight) of the vehicle. If tongue weight is not listed then it is typically 10 percent of the gross trailer weight capacity. If the vehicle is rated high enough you will also need a hitch that is rated higher enough. Trailer hitch # 90145 does have a 300 pound tongue weight capacity but you also have to consider the weight of the carrier...

  • Availability of Bike Rack To Fit on 2005 Chevrolet Equinox With Factory Spoiler
  • Thule does list the Thule Raceway 2 Bike Trunk Rack, part # TH9001PRO, as a fit on a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, but makes no mention of a fit with a spoiler. The directions say to place the top clips in the gap at the front edge of the top of the hatch. I would check your vehicle and determine if the top clips can attach to the top edge of your hatch without touching the spoiler. If the straps can attach without interfering with the spoiler you should be able to use the trunk bike rack. You...

  • 7-Way and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2014 GMC Terrain

From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well. This also will give you a 12 volt accessory power circuit. For...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation For Bike Rack on 2010 Cadillac SRX
  • We do have several hitch options for your 2010 Cadillac SRX that you can use a bike rack with. I have provided a link to these options for you. I would check the tongue weight restriction as listed in your Cadillac owners manual or check with your local dealership and make sure that the weight of the bikes, bike rack, and hitch will not exceed the tongue weight rating of the lowest rated component of your hitch system, which is usually the vehicle. My recommendation would be to choose...

  • Swagman Quad 2+2 2-Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 GMC Terrain and 2004 Chevy Avalanche
  • The Swagman Quad 2+2 2-Bike and 4-Bike Carrier # S64691 would be an excellent choice for a bike rack for your 2004 Chevy Avalanche, but theres not an ideal way I could recommend using this rack on a vehicle with a 1-1/4 inch hitch. When you use a hitch adapter like you referenced you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half and end up with a lot of excess play and movement of the rack in the hitch. I think your best option would be to get the # S64691 but then to also upgrade...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 GMC Terrain that Tilts or Swings Away

Which if you wanted to upgrade your hitch to a 2 inch hitch like the part # 87572 this would be a great option. For a bike rack that swings away from complete rear access I would recommend the Thule Vertex part # TH9031XT. I attached a review video for you to check out as well. Now if you wanted to keep your 1-1/4 inch hitch your best option would...
