Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 GMC Acadia - Curt

Today on our 2014 GMC Acadia we're going to take a look at, then show you how to install, the CURT custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver, part number 13424. Here you can see what the hitch looks like once it's installed. It's going to fit nicely behind our appearance cover. We can put that right back into place. When we're ready for use, just a couple little turns down here in the bottom. Those are going to allow us to separate our two points down there.

Then we'll just pull off the tabs here in the top, exposing our hitch. As you can see, the hitch sits nicely underneath the lower edge of the bumper. It tucks in so there's never going to be any risk of us hitting it with our leg or something when we come by. It's a 2" by 2" opening. That's going to give us plenty of room for bike racks, cargo carriers, ball mounts, whatever it is that we might decide to haul. The hitch is going to offer us a 500 pound tongue weight rating and a 5,000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

Now you will want to refer into the owner's manual of the Acadia just to make sure that those numbers are okay. If the numbers that they rate the Acadia at are lower, we'll go off those numbers or whichever ones are the lowest. It's going to use a standard 5/8 hitch pin. All of your 5/8 hitch pin accessories like your pins, your locks, your anti-rattle devices will all work in there nicely. You're going to have sturdy trailer connection points on each side and a black powder coat finish to keep it looking nice for a long time. Now we'll go over a few measurements that are going to help you in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or maybe cargo carrier. From the ground to the inside edge of the top tube of the receiver opening is going to about 19".

From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper, we're looking at about 4-1/2". now for the installation process we're going to start by removing our center fascia cover here. We've got two turn-style tabs there, and then there are just a couple four across the top, just tabs that slide there. Now save this, because in some situations we can put it back in place. Now with that out of the way let's take care of removing there's going to be five exhaust hangers that we're going to take off. We've got one located on each side of the tailpipe here where it's going to come out.

Same spot on the other tailpipe right up here and just out here on the outside. Then the fifth one that we're going to do, that's going to be the one right here behind the centrally located muffler. It's right over here just in front of that little counterweight that they've got. Now of course before you remove these we want to put a safety strap in place just to give our exhaust some support since we're going to be removing those hangers. We usually just use a short little cam buckle strap here, run it under, cinch it down. Then you can see that's going to give us some support as that comes down. Now as far as the hangers go it's a good idea to hit them with a little bit of spray lubricant. Just going to help them slide off a little bit. Sometimes they can be a bit of a bear to remove. Let's start working them off there. Sometimes like that inaudible 00:03:28 you just push on them right from behind. If not, you may have to get out a small pry bar, or if you have it, ideally an exhaust hanger removal tool is the easiest solution, but I don't have one at home either. Now with all five of those off we'll relax our strap a little bit here and allow that exhaust to come on down slightly. Now let's take a look at our attachment points here. As you can see, we've got two weld nuts in the underside of our frame. We'll want to clean these out with a little bit of spray lubricant. We're going to use a tube brush. This is part number 814092. If you don't already have one you can pick one up. It will come with your hitch. Pull that through there. Just really clean out those threads. We want to make sure our bolt's going to thread in there nicely, it's going to get out any dirt and debris that might have built up. Now if we move to the passenger side from there, it's the exact same location here. We're going to have those two weld nuts. We'll give those the same treatment. That will bring us to our middle mounting locations. Now here we've got two circles right here in the center that we're going to be using. Now we've got a fish wire. We'll feed that up through and then over this way. You'll see right here it's going to come out of the end of the bumper. Just going to put a little bend in that to help keep it in place. Then we're going to slide a spacer block up onto the fish wire just like that. Then we'll also thread on one of our 1/2" carriage bolts. Now by pulling on our fish wire gently we'll feed the block and the bolt up into the bumper and then gently pull this way to bring them right through the bottom just like that. We can now back that wire off, grab our other one, and we'll do the same thing for the hole on this side, just of course reversed. We'll go out of the passenger side into the bumper now, rather than the driver's. I like to hold those separately in my hand until we get them up in there. It will feed through well for us. Now we're ready to put our hitch up into position. We're going to use the M12 bolts and conical tooth washers. The teeth of that washer need to face up towards our hitch. Keep that in mind. We'll bring that through the bracket on our hitch here and then thread it right up into our hole location that we had cleaned out. Now we want to turn that in there to where it gets a good bite. Then we can come over and we'll do the same thing on our passenger side. Now let's grab our other two and we can put them in place there. Now hand tight's all we really need to do on these for now. On the middle you can see the two bolt's that we brought down. They go right through the two flanges on the hitch there, and they're going to receive one of the flange nuts. If they start wiggling on you like that, just poke a screwdriver right in there. That will hold it in place for you. We've got them all started. We'll take a quick look just to be sure we have our hitch centered. Looks good there, nice and lined up. Now let's tighten down our fasteners. You can see we've got a narrower gap here so we'll just be using a short-wall socket there to get those secure. Then once we've got everything snugged down we'll check our instruction manual and torque each of our bolts down to the appropriate specification. Now we need to get the exhaust put back up into position. We're just going to spray down each of our connection points again. Then we can start sliding them back together. Now there's no absolute way you have to follow this or anything, but I really like to get this one on the outside done since the exhaust hangs down to where you can reach up over it. With that one done I'll switch over here to this other far side. Now if your middle ones start to interfere, just rotate those up a little bit and they'll hold themselves out of the way. Now we'll start getting our middle ones done, then finally the one right up front. Now we'll just pull down our strap and we'll be ready to hook up to our trailer. That's going to complete today's look at the CURT custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver, part number 13424, on our 2014 GMC Acadia. .

Installation wasn't bad, and pretty much what the instructions said for a 2010 Traverse LS. The hardest part was probably chasing the rust out of the threads in the mounting holes since the road salt hadn't been kind to them and I bought it used. Lots of penetrating oil and going back and forth on the bolts to get them to thread in. I did need to grind the access holes slightly to get the heads of the mounting bolts through. I had better luck putting the spacers in place first, then threading the fish wire through the spacer and the mounting hole to pull the bolts in place. There's enough room to get the bolts past each other in the channel. Leave the fish wires attached to the bolts until the hitch is in place. Removing the muffler hangers will make it much easier to get to the mounting bolts on. All told, it took me probably 1.5 hours, but I was working by myself, and the first half hour was spent just getting the mounting holes clear. 178324

Very easy install on my 2013 GMC Acadia. It took me about 40 minutes to install (and I was taking my time). It came with easy instructions and everything that I needed to install it (including the wires to fish the bolts through the bumper). Overall, I am very happy with this product. 89748

I'm just your run-of-the-mill exceptionally satisfied customer. Full disclosure: I'm a cheapa$$. After I found what I wanted from etrailer, I surfed the part numbers looking for a cheaper source. After a few minutes, I asked myself "what the heck am I doing? etrailer.com has put up the money and time in a great website and fantastic how-to videos, and even if they're more expensive, they *deserve* my business - they earned it." So I bought. Additional full disclosure: nobody was cheaper. Don't waste your time looking. Oh, the hitch and wiring kit fit perfectly. What else would you expect? 64625

etrailer service and delivery were excellent. Reciever fits to position as instructional videos say. Took me an hour to install - that's what I expected. I ran into difficulty with the space in access holes and spacers at bumper part of mount... had to improvise just a bit. There is a small problem to address with contact with the muffler for my 2011 Traverse, but I'm hoping for an easy adjustment of some kind to give a little bit more room. Thanks e-trailer! 32497

I have a new GMC Acadia 2012. The installation was easy and fast. We (I had a helper) installed the hitch even without lowering the car exhaust. It took around 15 minutes. The only tool needed was 19mm (or 3./4") wrench. Very good product and well made. 47517

I have a question.... I was told that since we didnt get the tow package factory that we should not tow anything more than 2000 lbs.... do you know if this is true?

comment by: Michele - 07/22/2013

1793

It is possible, but does not seem very likely for this vehicle family. Check in the owners manual, there should be a section on towing that will outline capacities based on exact model and configuration. You can also contact GM headquarters with your VIN and they should be able to help you determine the towing capacity.

Hitch was very easy to install and fit perfect with most of it not showing. Directions were simple, easy to read and follow. I decided to trim the plastic panel and replace it around the receiver for a more finished look. 8095

A cakewalk The hitch arrived when promised and was a breeze to put on my 2011 traverse. The instructions were easy to read and follow. I was done in less then an hour. The wire that was included to fish the bolts through the frame worked like a charm. The wiring harness went on in 20 minutes. I couldn't be happier. Thanks for selling great products. 3619

2011 Chevy Traverse LT1 Installation was easy. However, the bolt head was too large for the access holes. Most of the time for installation was used filing the access holes to get the bolts through the frame. I was able to reinstall bumper fascia after installation. Installation took about 45 minutes. 26552
