Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 GMC Acadia - Curt

Today on our 2016 GMC Acadia, we're going to review an install. The CURT hitch, part number 13424. All right, now here's what our hitch is going to look like once installed. The hitch itself is a robust design for this application. It's got a square cross tube, and goes into a full welded construction. Here on either side of our receiver tube is our easy to access chain hold downs.

Going all the way through the receiver tube, there's our 5/8 pin hole for securing our attachments. This is our class three, two inch by two inch receiver tube. It's capable of up to 500 pound ton weight and a 5,000 pound tow capacity. When coupled with a weight distribution hitch, you can get up to 600 pounds ton weight and a 6,000 pound tow capacity. One of the really nice features about this installation is how easily the fascia door will go back on, even with our hitch in place. It covers up that hitch when it's not in use.

Simply put the fascia back in place and lock down the two corner tabs, and now our hitch is completely covered. We're ready to head on down the road. Then once we're ready to use our hitch, with our trailer or accessory, simply unlock those two corner tabs, pull that fascia door off, and our hitch is there and we're ready to hook up and head on down the road. Next, I'll give you a couple measurements to assist your selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is 18 inches.

This will assist your selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. To begin our install, we need to remove the rear fascia panel. To do that, we simply unlock it, one on each corner, and we'll pull it down. It'll release the fasteners here across the top. Next, we need to lower the exhaust, but before we do that, we want to put a safety strap in place to help hold the weight of the exhaust once we remove the hangers. We're going to have a total of three rubber isolators that need to be removed from the metal hangers.

To do that, we'll first spray each one with a spray lubricant. We have one here on the inside of the muffler, one on the outside of the muffler, one forward of the rear axle, just behind the front muffler. To remove each one of these rubber isolators from the metal hanger, we're going to use a pry bar or pliers just to slide one end off. Just like that we've lowered the exhaust, and exposed the frame rail. Now, we're going to have a total of six attachment points, three on each side. These attachment points here in the bumper beam are pre-drilled holes. Note, in some application they can also be well nuts. You'll have hardware for both options. Here at the frame rail, we're going to have two weld nuts. These weld nuts are built into the frame by the manufacturer, so only simply add hardware to secure the hitch. Before we attempt to install the new hardware, we're going to want to clean out the weld nut, because over time they build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris. To clean it out, we're going to use a spray lubricant, and our half-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. We'll thoroughly clean out the threads of that weld nut to make sure our new fastener install nice and easily. Now, for each of the weld nuts, we're going to have a 12 millimeter bolt. Those will be supplied with the install kit. Now we know it threads in nice and easily, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for the remaining weld nut attachment points. For each of the weld nut attachment points, we're going to have the 12 millimeter bolt and half-inch cockle tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch, as the bolt will go through the hitch attachment point and then into the weld nut. For applications like this one that just have the pre-drilled holes here in the bumper channel, we'll be installing a half-inch carriage bolt and block. We'll feed them into place, down through the attachment point, and then once the hitch is in position we'll install our flange nut to secure it. To get our hardware in place, we're going to use the half-inch bolt leader that's supplied with the install kit. Let's go ahead and starting installing our hardware here into the bumper channel. We'll take our bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point, and out the end of the frame. Once we have access to it, we'll go ahead and install the block, sliding it onto the bolt leader. Then we'll take our carriage bolt and thread it into the end. Next, we'll feed them into the bumper channel separately, first the block and then the bolt. Now, using the bolt leader, we can pull them into position. The bolt will engage the block, and we'll go ahead and leave the pull wire attached, which will assist with getting our hitch up into place without pushing that hardware back up into the bumper channel. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side, we have to repeat identically on the opposite side. There's all of our attachment points and hardware the same. We're now ready to install our hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. We'll feed the pull wires through the center attachment points, and then bring the hitch up to the frame. Once we have the hitch up to the frame, we can go ahead and install our bolt into the weld nut, and it'll hold the weight of the hitch. Keep in mind as we install each fastener to just tighten them down hand tight this time. Once we have the bolts in place, we'll go ahead and remove the pull wires and install our two flange nuts to secure the hardware here at the center. Just like that, we've got all our hardware in place, and we're ready to tighten it down. All right. Now with all our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners tightened down and torque specifications, we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Once we have the exhaust back in place, we'll go ahead and remove our safety strap. Just like that our hitch is installed, and we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of our CURT class three, two-inch receiver tube hitch, part number 13424, on our 2016 GMC Acadia.

Installation wasn't bad, and pretty much what the instructions said for a 2010 Traverse LS. The hardest part was probably chasing the rust out of the threads in the mounting holes since the road salt hadn't been kind to them and I bought it used. Lots of penetrating oil and going back and forth on the bolts to get them to thread in. I did need to grind the access holes slightly to get the heads of the mounting bolts through. I had better luck putting the spacers in place first, then threading the fish wire through the spacer and the mounting hole to pull the bolts in place. There's enough room to get the bolts past each other in the channel. Leave the fish wires attached to the bolts until the hitch is in place. Removing the muffler hangers will make it much easier to get to the mounting bolts on. All told, it took me probably 1.5 hours, but I was working by myself, and the first half hour was spent just getting the mounting holes clear. 178324

Very easy install on my 2013 GMC Acadia. It took me about 40 minutes to install (and I was taking my time). It came with easy instructions and everything that I needed to install it (including the wires to fish the bolts through the bumper). Overall, I am very happy with this product. 89748

I havent had any issues with it and am still fully satisfied with the product.

I'm just your run-of-the-mill exceptionally satisfied customer. Full disclosure: I'm a cheapa$$. After I found what I wanted from etrailer, I surfed the part numbers looking for a cheaper source. After a few minutes, I asked myself "what the heck am I doing? has put up the money and time in a great website and fantastic how-to videos, and even if they're more expensive, they *deserve* my business - they earned it." So I bought. Additional full disclosure: nobody was cheaper. Don't waste your time looking. Oh, the hitch and wiring kit fit perfectly. What else would you expect? 64625

etrailer service and delivery were excellent. Reciever fits to position as instructional videos say. Took me an hour to install - that's what I expected. I ran into difficulty with the space in access holes and spacers at bumper part of mount... had to improvise just a bit. There is a small problem to address with contact with the muffler for my 2011 Traverse, but I'm hoping for an easy adjustment of some kind to give a little bit more room. Thanks e-trailer! 32497

I have a new GMC Acadia 2012. The installation was easy and fast. We (I had a helper) installed the hitch even without lowering the car exhaust. It took around 15 minutes. The only tool needed was 19mm (or 3./4") wrench. Very good product and well made. 47517

I have a question.... I was told that since we didnt get the tow package factory that we should not tow anything more than 2000 lbs.... do you know if this is true?

comment by: Michele - 07/22/2013

It is possible, but does not seem very likely for this vehicle family. Check in the owners manual, there should be a section on towing that will outline capacities based on exact model and configuration. You can also contact GM headquarters with your VIN and they should be able to help you determine the towing capacity.

Hitch was very easy to install and fit perfect with most of it not showing. Directions were simple, easy to read and follow. I decided to trim the plastic panel and replace it around the receiver for a more finished look. 8095

Although I have just installed the product and my first use will be in another week, the ease of installation was exactly what the customer service representative told me it would be. It was pretty easy. She also made great recommendations with regards to the product itself, detailing the construction of the product, manufacturing processes and other details. 200194

A cakewalk The hitch arrived when promised and was a breeze to put on my 2011 traverse. The instructions were easy to read and follow. I was done in less then an hour. The wire that was included to fish the bolts through the frame worked like a charm. The wiring harness went on in 20 minutes. I couldn't be happier. Thanks for selling great products. 3619

Item came quicker than promised. I had the dealership install hitch. They did in about 30 minutes and it looks great. Mufflers do need to be dropped in order to install frame bolts . Just a suggestion if you have a dealership that you regularly go to it's worth it to have them install as they have the correct tools to do the job. 215173

2011 Chevy Traverse LT1 Installation was easy. However, the bolt head was too large for the access holes. Most of the time for installation was used filing the access holes to get the bolts through the frame. I was able to reinstall bumper fascia after installation. Installation took about 45 minutes. 26552
