Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Ford Focus - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2012 Ford Focus well be installing Hidden Hitch, part number 60290. Before we begin our installation heres what the hitch will look like on your vehicle. Now well give a couple of measurements to help you in selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper is 2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 11 inches. Now lets go ahead with our install.

Now to begin the installation well need to lower our exhaust. To do this well remove the four bolts holding the exhaust brackets in place. There are two on each side. Well go ahead and sit those off to the side as we will not be reinstalling them. Our next step is to trim the heat shield.

Well hold the hitch into place to give us a better idea of what we need to cut out. Well use a marker to trace around our cutting area. Well then use a pair of tin snips to cut out the heat shield. Again well do this on both sides. Well now get the two plastic isolator strips from the installation hardware.

Well cut the two strips in half and place them strategically as indicated in the instructions. These isolator strips will go between the aluminum hanger and the steel hitch. Were now ready to raise our hitch into position. It will be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you install your hardware. Well be using the bolt, lock washer, and flat washer provided with the hitch.

Were now ready to put in the spacer block and carriage bolt for the third mounting point on either side. Well use the fish wire that well run through the side of the hitch bracket, through the frame and out the access hole here. We can then slide our spacer block on and thread the carriage bolt into the fish wire. Well now pull our hardware through the access hole and out the mounting bolt hole location on the other side of the frame. We can then use a conical tooth washer, making sure that the teeth of the washer face the hitch, and nut and thread them into the carriage bolt. After doing that on the other side all our hardware is in place and we can now tighten it down and torque it to specification as indicated in the instructions. Thatll complete the installation of Hidden Hitch, part number 60290, on our 2012 Ford Focus.

Shipping container had a hole where hitch receiver broke through, but no mechanical damage to product. Shipping tape residue on hitch, had to remove with lighter fluid. Some paint imperfections, so I touched up the product with black gloss rustoleum since its being installed under the vehicle. Installation instructions were outstanding. All installation materials were provided. The product fit my Ford Focus Hatchback perfectly, all the dimensions were correct. In summary, a great hitch if sloppily packaged. Recommend. 85640

Going great! No problems.

Ed,I was wondering if you could help me very quickly. Did you have to modify the hitch in any way to have it accept the 1upusa rack? I was told on the phone that none of the Focus hitches would work with my Yakima Holdup rack because they are all Class I. I had a Class I hitch on my previous Corolla and had no issues. The only requirement is that there is at least 2 from the hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car. I looked up the 1upusa rack and they claim the same requirement. So that leads me to believe that my Yakima rack would work as well. Can you confirm that the hitch has at least 2 of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the backstop? Thanks for any help.

Jesse, I measured hitch pin hole into the receiver toward the front of the car and found it to be 4. Hitch pin hole to rear of receiver is 2. Hope that helps.

Great service, quick delivery! It was very easy to install having never (ever) looked underneath my car before. The only trick was wiggling the bolts through the hole with the pull wire, and having to borrow a torque wrench. I'm so excited by how good it looks. Vacation with bikes here I come! 94166

Year has past, and my car and I have traveled from the east coast to the west coast with a bike sitting on this hitch. 100 satisfied.

I finally finished my winter project on my Goldwing and completed the hitch install on our Ford Focus. This week I was able to load the Wing onto my new ACE trailer and take it for a small initial run to verify how it holds the bike and road. You'll be glad to hear that it works great. I'm quite happy with my decision to purchase the folding trailer. When I parked at a shopping center during the test run, a guy came over and wanted to know where I got that cool trailer. I gave him your web site and high praise. He said he's been looking for a small trailer to pull his bike. So, I included a photo of my Wing on the trailer connected to the car ready for the test run. 130039

Pretty straight forward install. As others have stated, be sure to grind the carriage bolts on two sides to fit through the feed hole. Otherwise, they won't go. I found it easier to push the carriage bolt "backward" first- away from the intended position, then pull it with the fish wire. Kind of difficult to hold the tow bar up while making the bolts, try to get a helper for this. Very good fit, no drilling or cutting needed. Looks pretty solid to me. Enjoy 58140

Good product, but the video installation make it look easier than the installation really is, and seems be missing some important details. The written instructions seem to be the same, "kinda vague", and not written and diagramed all that well, Although eventually you can figure it out. All in all it appears to be a quality hitch, and should fulfill your needs. 147804

This is a solid product! It was really easy to mount despite my limited mechanical skills. My wife and I were able to figure it out in less than 30 minutes - now that is saying something! I mounted a Thule bike rack and it fit perfectly. No more transporting bikes in the trunk or those expensive roof racks. Awesome! 168135

I watched the vid on the install of the hitch. Everything you need to install the hitch is there. You should tell what size wrench you need and I had to do some grinding to get the head of the bolts into the frame of my 2012 Ford Focus as the slots were to small. The hitch looks great. Can,t wait to really try it out. 178286

This install was so darn simple. Instructions give a 40 minute install time and I didn't believe it. But it's true. Pretty much on the 2014 Ford Focus it's a simple bolt on. Quick trim of very light heat shield and a little filing of the oblong hole so the carriage bolt fits through. Highly recommended. 128842

This product would be a solid 5 star rating, except for 1 minor issue. The bolts that are fished through the frame are too large, I had to dremel off part of the bolt head to make them fit. Other than that the install took me less than 30 minutes and fit perfectly. It looks great and feels solid. 82476

Very happy with this hitch! Easy to install! Will need another person to help lift the hitch up otherwise I would have been able to do it my self. Looks & works great! Great customer service also. I called to get delivery date they said it would arrive on Monday but it showed up the Friday before! 144074

Install was straightforward and easy. The instructions could have been a bit clearer visually to aid in the step that included fishing the bolt through the frame, but otherwise there were no issues. Hitch looks great on the car and doesn't stick out far or hang too low. 90616

It was easy to install and didn't require drilling into my car. Other hitches required drilling two holes to mount. The kit included some very useful tools for installing as well. Thanks 34863

  • Draw-Tite and Curt Class I Hitch Comparison for 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback
  • All three Class I hitches offered for your 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback are a light-duty type that offer the same 200-lb tongue weight capacity, but as you note there are some differences between them that may help guide your choice for your cargo basket application. The link provided will let you see all three. The variations in construction do not result in different weight ratings so I would not be too concerned about the presence or absence of the collar. • Bike Rack and Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2013 Ford Focus
  • Taking your criteria into consideration I would recommend a hitch and hitch mounted bike rack for your 2013 Ford Focus. The reason I am offering the hitch solution is because by having a hitch it gives you options for towing in the future such as a hitch cargo carrier. If you need a hitch for your vehicle I have the following suggestion: Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch for the 2013 Ford Focus, part # 60290 because not only is it easy to install but it also comes with a ballmount, pin and...

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2012 Ford Focus Sedan
  • The correct Hidden Hitch trailer hitch for a 2012 Ford Focus sedan is # 60290. If you do not plan on towing then I would go with Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24872. It does not cost as much because it does not include a ball mount, pin, and clip (items that will not be needed if you will not be towing). This is a Class I trailer hitch so any accessory you use will need to be Class I compatible. For a 20x48 carrier that is compatible I recommend the Draw-Tite carrier, # 6500. I have included...

One advantage to this bike rack is that it only uses 4 retractable cables instead of 6 straps. The cables will last longer than nylon straps and...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Ford Focus Sedan
  • Since you plan on towing a small trailer you will want a draw bar so the Hidden Hitch part # 60290 would be your best choice. For that you would want the part # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball or part # 19258 for a 2 inch hitch ball. For trailer wiring you would want part # 118548. I attached an FAQ article on towing...
