Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Ford Explorer - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2013 Ford Explorer well be installing hidden hitch, part number 87720. This is what out hitch will look like once its installed. Next well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is three and three-quarter inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 15 inches. This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Now lets go ahead with installation. First before we can install the hitch well need to lower the exhaust. Well remove the three rearmost rubber isolators from the metal hangers of the exhaust. To lower the exhaust well first put a safety strap underneath the exhaust so that once we remove the hangers we can safely lower the exhaust without damaging anything further up the line near the engine. Well spray each isolator and then use a pry bar to remove it.

Now we can safely go ahead and use the safety strap to lower the exhaust. Next well need to remove the metal exhaust hangers from the frame rail by removing the two fasteners on each side. Then once we have the hangers removed well remove the rubber isolators from the hanger, sitting the hanger aside as it will not be reinstalled. Well repeat the same process on the opposite side. Next well go ahead and point out the attachment points.

Well have a total of five attachment points, two on the drivers side which will be the weld nuts built into the frame by the manufacturer and three on the passenger side. Again two weld nuts built in by the manufacturer and a third will be a carriage bolt and block that well install into the frame through the access hole being the rear attachment point here on the passenger side. Keep in mind that the two weld nuts are the same on both sides so each process we do here to the passenger side will get repeated identically on the drivers side. The hardware for our rear attachment point on the passenger side will be a carriage bolt and block along with a conical tooth washer and nut to secure the hitch. Pulling our parts into position well be using the half inch bolt leader provided with our install kit.

Well go ahead and take the pull wire, slide the block onto the pull wire and then thread on our carriage bolt. Then well feed the carriage bolt up into the frame followed by the block. Once you have the carriage bolt and block up into the frame well pull them back to the access hole that we just fed them through creating our rear attachment point. Next to secure the isolators to the hitch well use a seven sixteenths bolt, flat washer, and lock nut. Well feed the bolt through the hitch, slide on the hanger, then our flat washer, and then secure it with the lock nut. Well go ahead and repeat the same process on the opposite side. Now were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. To secure the hitch to the vehicle at the weld nut attachment points well use the new 12 millimeter bolt and conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. At this point its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your fasteners. As you bring the passenger side up into position well take the bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point, and then secure the hitch with the 12 millimeter bolts to the weld nuts in the frame. With all of our hardware in place we can now go ahead and tighten them down. Next well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Thatll complete the install of the hidden hitch, part number 87720, on our 2013 Ford Explorer.

Installed by one person (me) onto a 2011 Explorer Limited. Fit is great, and installation, even with just one person, took about an hour (I have an electric impact wrench which makes it go MUCH faster than with a standard ratchet). Just back your Explorer up onto wheel ramps, and you're good to go. This leaves your floor jack as a handy exhaust support. To hoist the hitch into place, I used the mufflers to support the hitch while I started the bolts into the weld nuts in the frame. You're going to need 18 and 19 mm sockets, and a pry bar or very large screw driver to perform this install. BTW, shipping time was reasonable and eTrailer's post-sale customer service was exceptional. 86711

Hitch was a little delayed getting out because it was back ordered, but etrailer did a great job communicating the delay. Opening the hitch, the first thing I noticed was the welds where just sloppy. Clearly either done quickly, or done by someone that had no idea what they where doing. Secondly the installation process was simple enough, however the spacer provided was incorrectly stamped, and the bolt would not fit through the hole. Had to file down the sides to get the bolt to fit. Overall the quality of this product is second rate for sure. No issue with etrailer, just not a quality product. 85610

I initially ordered the wrong hitch and contact etrailer by email immediately to address the issue. I had nothing but excellent service. The correct hitch was ordered and the incorrect hitch was removed. I received the ordered items promptly. I am completely happy with the service I received. I have yet to put the part on at this time. Thank you for such great service. I look forward to installing and using the hitch. I will highly recommend etrailer to my friends and family. 32803

Bought a new Ford Explorer 2015, the dealer wanted to charge me over $500 to put a new hitch and wire harness on. I went to U-Haul, they wanted almost $400. I ordered a hitch here, and wire harness. Cost was just over $200 with shipping (expedited). I put the tow bar and wire harness on in less than an hour. I will most definitely come back here and buy more items for hauling bikes, etc. Good product, highly recommend, easy to install. 162485

Watch the quick youtube instalation video because this thing is VERY easy to install once you've seen how. Big bolts mean you'll probably need a set of 1/2" wrenches, and a second set of hands helps when it comes to actually lifting the hitch into place. I'm a welder, and I can attest that this hitch is very well built and very strong. And as important, it looks good once it's mounted. A++ 162907

Very easy to install, just follow the instructions as they are laid out in order. You will have no problems at all. I only wish that they made an aftermarket hitch that installed behind the removable bumper cover insert. 29692

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Differences/Similarities in Hitches Offered for 2013 Ford Explorer Sport
  • The Draw-Tite # 75710 and Hidden Hitch # 87720 are both manufactured by Cequent Performance Products, and are identical for all intents and purposes. The Curt # C13100 hitch is almost identical in appearance, would install in the same manner, and has the exact same weight capacity. All three of the hitches are protected by the same limited lifetime warranty. As far as quality and durability goes, I have no preference between Draw-Tite/Hidden Hitch and the Curt. The Curt hitch does use...

  • OEM Style Trailer Hitch for 2011 Ford Explorer
  • The hitches we offer for your Explorer, the Curt Class III, part # C13100 and the Draw-Tite # 75710 and the Hidden Hitch # 87720 would all have the receiver tube sitting below the rear bumper fascia as shown in the photos I provided for you. We don't offer an OEM style hitch for your Explorer, you would need to see a Ford dealer about that.

  • Should I Use Loctite When Installing Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 87720 on 2011 Ford Explorer
  • Using LocTite is not required when installing the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 87720 on your 2011 Ford Explorer, but it would not be a bad idea to use some. I would recommend using Loctite Blue Stick Threadlocker, part # LT37643, which you would apply to the threads of the bolts. You will want to make sure to use a torque wrench and torque down all bolts as specified in the instructions. With a few basic tools you will be able to install the hitch in your driveway. Drilling is not required...

This is a very simple install, I attached installation instructions and a installation video for you to check out as well. Curt is it's own company so the # C13100 would be made by the same company but due to it's very similar design and exact same capacities it's not really that different at all. It has only a powder coat finish whereas the other two hitches have an e-coat base covered by powder coat. For the price I would recommend the...
